Abstract: This paper deals principally with the socio-economic impact on the local Iban community in Mukah Division, Sarawak; with the commencement of the open-cut coal mining industry since 2003. To-date there are no actual studies being carried out by either the public or private sector to truly analyze how the Iban community is coping with the advent of a large influx of cash into their society. The Iban community has traditionally been practicing shifting cultivation and farming of domesticated animals; with a portion of the younger generation working as laborers and professional. This paper represents the views and observations of the author supported by some statistical facts extracted from published articles and non-published reports. The paper deals primarily in the following areas: • Background of the coal mining industry in Mukah Division, Sarawak; • Benefits of the coal mining industry towards the Iban community; • Issues / Problems arise in the Iban community because of the presence of the coal mining industry; and • Possible actions that need to be taken to overcome these issues/ problems.
Abstract: Detecting protein-protein interactions is a central problem in computational biology and aberrant such interactions may have implicated in a number of neurological disorders. As a result, the prediction of protein-protein interactions has recently received considerable attention from biologist around the globe. Computational tools that are capable of effectively identifying protein-protein interactions are much needed. In this paper, we propose a method to detect protein-protein interaction based on substring similarity measure. Two protein sequences may interact by the mean of the similarities of the substrings they contain. When applied on the currently available protein-protein interaction data for the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the proposed method delivered reasonable improvement over the existing ones.
Abstract: The present work analyses different parameters of pressure die casting to minimize the casting defects. Pressure diecasting is usually applied for casting of aluminium alloys. Good surface finish with required tolerances and dimensional accuracy can be achieved by optimization of controllable process parameters such as solidification time, molten temperature, filling time, injection pressure and plunger velocity. Moreover, by selection of optimum process parameters the pressure die casting defects such as porosity, insufficient spread of molten material, flash etc. are also minimized. Therefore, a pressure die casting component, carburetor housing of aluminium alloy (Al2Si2O5) has been considered. The effects of selected process parameters on casting defects and subsequent setting of parameters with the levels have been accomplished by Taguchi-s parameter design approach. The experiments have been performed as per the combination of levels of different process parameters suggested by L18 orthogonal array. Analyses of variance have been performed for mean and signal-to-noise ratio to estimate the percent contribution of different process parameters. Confidence interval has also been estimated for 95% consistency level and three conformational experiments have been performed to validate the optimum level of different parameters. Overall 2.352% reduction in defects has been observed with the help of suggested optimum process parameters.
Abstract: In this paper, a neural tree (NT) classifier having a
simple perceptron at each node is considered. A new concept for
making a balanced tree is applied in the learning algorithm of the
tree. At each node, if the perceptron classification is not accurate and
unbalanced, then it is replaced by a new perceptron. This separates
the training set in such a way that almost the equal number of patterns
fall into each of the classes. Moreover, each perceptron is trained only
for the classes which are present at respective node and ignore other
classes. Splitting nodes are employed into the neural tree architecture
to divide the training set when the current perceptron node repeats
the same classification of the parent node. A new error function based
on the depth of the tree is introduced to reduce the computational
time for the training of a perceptron. Experiments are performed to
check the efficiency and encouraging results are obtained in terms of
accuracy and computational costs.
Abstract: Academia-industry relationship is not like that of
technology donator-acceptor, but is of interactive and collaborative
nature, acknowledging and ensuring mutual respect for each other-s
role and contributions with an eye to attaining the true purpose of
such relationships, namely, bringing about research-outcome
synergy. Indeed, academia-industry interactions are a system that
requires active and collaborative participations of all the
stakeholders.
This paper examines various issues associated with academic
institutions and industry collaboration with special attention to the
nature of resources and potentialities of stakeholders in the context of
knowledge management. This paper also explores the barriers of
academia-industry interaction. It identifies potential areas where
industry-s participation with academia would be most effective for
synergism. Lastly, this paper proposes an integrated model of several
new collaborative approaches that are possible, mainly in the Indian
scenario to strengthen academia-industry interface.
Abstract: Dengue fever is prevalent in Malaysia with numerous
cases including mortality recorded over the years. Public education
on the prevention of the desease through various means has been
carried out besides the enforcement of legal means to eradicate
Aedes mosquitoes, the dengue vector breeding ground. Hence, other
means need to be explored, such as predicting the seasonal peak
period of the dengue outbreak and identifying related climate factors
contributing to the increase in the number of mosquitoes. Simulation
model can be employed for this purpose. In this study, we created a
simulation of system dynamic to predict the spread of dengue
outbreak in Hulu Langat, Selangor Malaysia. The prototype was
developed using STELLA 9.1.2 software. The main data input are
rainfall, temperature and denggue cases. Data analysis from the graph
showed that denggue cases can be predicted accurately using these
two main variables- rainfall and temperature. However, the model
will be further tested over a longer time period to ensure its
accuracy, reliability and efficiency as a prediction tool for dengue
outbreak.
Abstract: The two-phase flow field and the motion of the free
surface in an oscillating channel are simulated numerically to assess
the methodology for simulating nuclear reacotr thermal hydraulics
under seismic conditions. Two numerical methods are compared: one
is to model the oscillating channel directly using the moving grid of
the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method, and the other is to simulate
the effect of channel motion using the oscillating acceleration acting
on the fluid in the stationary channel. The two-phase flow field in the
oscillating channel is simulated using the level set method in both
cases. The calculated results using the oscillating acceleration are
found to coinside with those using the moving grid, and the theoretical
back ground and the limitation of oscillating acceleration are discussed.
It is shown that the change in the interfacial area between liquid and
gas phases under seismic conditions is important for nuclear reactor
thermal hydraulics.
Abstract: Majority of researches conducted on Iranian urban
development plans indicate that they have been almost unsuccessful
in terms of draft, execution and goal achievement. Lack or shortage
of essential statistics and information can be listed as an important
reason of the failure of these plans. Lack of figures and information
has turned into an obvious part of the country-s statistics officials.
This problem has made urban planner themselves to embark on
physical surveys including real estate and land pricing, population
and economic census of the city. Apart from the problems facing
urban developers, the possibility of errors is high in such surveys.
In the present article, applying the interview technique, it has
been mentioned that utilizing multipurpose cadastre system as a land
information system is essential for urban development plans in Iran.
It can minimize or even remove the failures facing urban
development plans.
Abstract: Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in mathematical education is a very active field of research and innovation, where learning is understood to be meaningful and grasping multiple linked representation rather than rote memorization, a great amount of literature offering a wide range of theories, learning approaches, methodologies and interpretations, are generally stressing the potentialities for teaching and learning using ICT. Despite the utilization of new learning approaches with ICT, students experience difficulties in learning concepts relevant to understanding mathematics, much remains unclear about the relationship between the computer environment, the activities it might support, and the knowledge that might emerge from such activities. Many questions that might arise in this regard: to what extent does the use of ICT help students in the process of understanding and solving tasks or problems? Is it possible to identify what aspects or features of students' mathematical learning can be enhanced by the use of technology? This paper will highlight the interest of the integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) into the teaching and learning of mathematics (quadratic functions), it aims to investigate the effect of four instructional methods on students- mathematical understanding and problem solving. Quantitative and qualitative methods are used to report about 43 students in middle school. Results showed that mathematical thinking and problem solving evolves as students engage with ICT activities and learn cooperatively.
Abstract: This was the first document revealing the
investigation of protein hydrolysate production optimization from J.
curcas cake. Proximate analysis of raw material showed 18.98%
protein, 5.31% ash, 8.52% moisture and 12.18% lipid. The
appropriate protein hydrolysate production process began with
grinding the J. curcas cake into small pieces. Then it was suspended
in 2.5% sodium hydroxide solution with ratio between solution/ J.
curcas cake at 80:1 (v/w). The hydrolysis reaction was controlled at
temperature 50 °C in water bath for 45 minutes. After that, the
supernatant (protein hydrolysate) was separated using centrifuge at
8000g for 30 minutes. The maximum yield of resulting protein
hydrolysate was 73.27 % with 7.34% moisture, 71.69% total protein,
7.12% lipid, 2.49% ash. The product was also capable of well
dissolving in water.
Abstract: Increasing energy absorption is a significant parameter
in vehicle design. Absorbing more energy results in decreasing
occupant damage. Limitation of the deflection in a side impact results
in decreased energy absorption (SEA) and increased peak load (PL).
Hence a high crash force jeopardizes passenger safety and vehicle
integrity. The aims of this paper are to determine suitable dimensions
and material of a square beam subjected to side impact, in order to
maximize SEA and minimize PL. To achieve this novel goal, the
geometric parameters of a square beam are optimized using the
response surface method (RSM).multi-objective optimization is
performed, and the optimum design for different response features is
obtained.
Abstract: This paper reports the results of an experimental work
conducted to investigate the effect of curing conditions on the
compressive strength of self-compacting geopolymer concrete
prepared by using fly ash as base material and combination of sodium
hydroxide and sodium silicate as alkaline activator. The experiments
were conducted by varying the curing time and curing temperature in
the range of 24-96 hours and 60-90°C respectively. The essential
workability properties of freshly prepared Self-compacting
Geopolymer concrete such as filling ability, passing ability and
segregation resistance were evaluated by using Slump flow,
V-funnel, L-box and J-ring test methods. The fundamental
requirements of high flowability and resistance to segregation as
specified by guidelines on Self-compacting Concrete by EFNARC
were satisfied. Test results indicate that longer curing time and curing
the concrete specimens at higher temperatures result in higher
compressive strength. There was increase in compressive strength
with the increase in curing time; however increase in compressive
strength after 48 hours was not significant. Concrete specimens cured
at 70°C produced the highest compressive strength as compared to
specimens cured at 60°C, 80°C and 90°C.
Abstract: This paper presents the applicability of artificial
neural networks for 24 hour ahead solar power generation forecasting
of a 20 kW photovoltaic system, the developed forecasting is suitable
for a reliable Microgrid energy management. In total four neural
networks were proposed, namely: multi-layred perceptron, radial
basis function, recurrent and a neural network ensemble consisting in
ensemble of bagged networks. Forecasting reliability of the proposed
neural networks was carried out in terms forecasting error
performance basing on statistical and graphical methods. The
experimental results showed that all the proposed networks achieved
an acceptable forecasting accuracy. In term of comparison the neural
network ensemble gives the highest precision forecasting comparing
to the conventional networks. In fact, each network of the ensemble
over-fits to some extent and leads to a diversity which enhances the
noise tolerance and the forecasting generalization performance
comparing to the conventional networks.
Abstract: The new technology of fuzzy neural networks for identification of parameters for mathematical models of geofields is proposed and checked. The effectiveness of that soft computing technology is demonstrated, especially in the early stage of modeling, when the information is uncertain and limited.
Abstract: The energy consumption and delay in read/write
operation of conventional SRAM is investigated analytically as well
as by simulation. Explicit analytical expressions for the energy
consumption and delay in read and write operation as a function of
device parameters and supply voltage are derived. The expressions are
useful in predicting the effect of parameter changes on the energy
consumption and speed as well as in optimizing the design of
conventional SRAM. HSPICE simulation in standard 0.25μm CMOS
technology confirms precision of analytical expressions derived from
this paper.
Abstract: Detection of squirrel cage induction motor (SCIM) broken bars has long been an important but difficult job in the detection area of motor faults. Early detection of this abnormality in the motor would help to avoid costly breakdowns. A new detection method based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) is presented in this paper. Stator current in an induction motor will be measured and characteristic frequency components of faylted rotor will be detected by minimizing a fitness function using pso. Supply frequency and side band frequencies and their amplitudes can be estimated by the proposed method. The proposed method is applied to a faulty motor with one and two broken bars in different loading condition. Experimental results prove that the proposed method is effective and applicable.
Abstract: We study the typical domain size and configuration
character of a randomly perturbed system exhibiting continuous
symmetry breaking. As a model system we use rod-like objects
within a cubic lattice interacting via a Lebwohl–Lasher-type
interaction. We describe their local direction with a headless unit
director field. An example of such systems represents nematic LC or
nanotubes. We further introduce impurities of concentration p, which
impose the random anisotropy field-type disorder to directors. We
study the domain-type pattern of molecules as a function of p,
anchoring strength w between a neighboring director and impurity,
temperature, history of samples. In simulations we quenched the
directors either from the random or homogeneous initial
configuration. Our results show that a history of system strongly
influences: i) the average domain coherence length; and ii) the range
of ordering in the system. In the random case the obtained order is
always short ranged (SR). On the contrary, in the homogeneous case,
SR is obtained only for strong enough anchoring and large enough
concentration p. In other cases, the ordering is either of quasi long
range (QLR) or of long range (LR). We further studied memory
effects for the random initial configuration. With increasing external
ordering field B either QLR or LR is realized.
Abstract: The flow field and the motion of the free surface in an
oscillating container are simulated numerically to assess the numerical
approach for studying two-phase flows under oscillating conditions.
Two numerical methods are compared: one is to model the oscillating
container directly using the moving grid of the ALE method, and the
other is to simulate the effect of container motion using the oscillating
body force acting on the fluid in the stationary container. The
two-phase flow field in the container is simulated using the level set
method in both cases. It is found that the calculated results by the body
force method coinsides with those by the moving grid method and the
sloshing behavior is predicted well by both the methods. Theoretical
back ground and limitation of the body force method are discussed,
and the effects of oscillation amplitude and frequency are shown.
Abstract: The policies governing the business of any
organization are well reflected in her business rules. The business
rules are implemented by data validation techniques, coded during
the software development process. Any change in business
policies results in change in the code written for data validation
used to enforce the business policies. Implementing the change in
business rules without changing the code is the objective of this
paper. The proposed approach enables users to create rule sets at
run time once the software has been developed. The newly defined
rule sets by end users are associated with the data variables for
which the validation is required. The proposed approach facilitates
the users to define business rules using all the comparison
operators and Boolean operators. Multithreading is used to
validate the data entered by end user against the business rules
applied. The evaluation of the data is performed by a newly
created thread using an enhanced form of the RPN (Reverse Polish
Notation) algorithm.
Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the effect of noise in a single- ended input differential amplifier working at high frequencies. Both extrinsic and intrinsic noise are analyzed using time domain method employing techniques from stochastic calculus. Stochastic differential equations are used to obtain autocorrelation functions of the output noise voltage and other solution statistics like mean and variance. The analysis leads to important design implications and suggests changes in the device parameters for improved noise characteristics of the differential amplifier.
