Abstract: This paper proposes method of diagnosing ball screw
preload loss through the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) and
Multiscale entropy (MSE) process. The proposed method can
diagnose ball screw preload loss through vibration signals when the
machine tool is in operation. Maximum dynamic preload of 2 %, 4 %,
and 6 % ball screws were predesigned, manufactured, and tested
experimentally. Signal patterns are discussed and revealed using
Empirical Mode Decomposition(EMD)with the Hilbert Spectrum.
Different preload features are extracted and discriminated using HHT.
The irregularity development of a ball screw with preload loss is
determined and abstracted using MSE based on complexity
perception. Experiment results show that the proposed method can
predict the status of ball screw preload loss. Smart sensing for the
health of the ball screw is also possible based on a comparative
evaluation of MSE by the signal processing and pattern matching of
EMD/HHT. This diagnosis method realizes the purposes of prognostic
effectiveness on knowing the preload loss and utilizing convenience.

This paper presents several usages of GIS in power utilities such as automated route selection for the construction of new power lines which uses a dynamic programming model for route optimization, load forecasting and optimizing planning of substation-s location and capacity with comprehensive algorithm which involves an accurate small-area electric load forecasting procedure and simulates the different cost functions of substations.
Abstract: The relationship between different types of Molybdenum disulfide greases under extreme pressure loading and different speed situations have been studied using Design of Experiment (DOE) under 1200rpm steady state rotational speed and cyclic frequencies between 2400 and 1200rpm using a Plint machine software to set up the different rotational speed situations.
Research described here is aimed at providing good friction and wear performance while optimizing cyclic frequencies and MoS2 concentration due to the recent concern about grease behavior in extreme pressure applications. Extreme load of 785 Newton was used in conjunction with different cyclic frequencies (2400rpm -3.75min, 1200rpm -7.5min, 2400rpm -3.75min, 1200rpm -7.5min), to examine lithium based grease with and without MoS2 for equal number of revolutions, and a total run of 36000 revolutions; then compared to 1200rpm steady speed for the same total number of revolutions. 4 Ball wear tester was utilized to run large number of experiments randomly selected by the DOE software. The grease was combined with fine grade MoS2 or technical grade then heated to 750C and the wear scar width was collected at the end of each test. DOE model validation results verify that the data were very significant and can be applied to a wide range of extreme pressure applications. Based on simulation results and Scanning Electron images (SEM), it has been found that wear was largely dependent on the cyclic frequency condition. It is believed that technical grade MoS2 greases under faster cyclic speeds perform better and provides antiwear film that can resist extreme pressure loadings. Figures showed reduced wear scars width and improved frictional values.
Abstract: Geosynthetics have proved to be suitable for
reinforced soil retaining walls. Based on the increasing uses of
geosynthetic reinforced soil systems in the regions, which bear
frequent earthquakes, the study of dynamic behavior of structures
seems necessary. Determining the reinforcement forces is; therefore,
one of the most important and main points of discussions in
designing retaining walls, by which we prevent from conservative
planning. Thus, this paper intended to investigate the effects of such
parameters as wall height, acceleration type, vertical spacing of
reinforcement, type of reinforcement and soil type on forces and
deformation through numerical modeling of the geosynthetic
reinforced soil retaining walls (GRSRW) under dynamic loading with
finite difference method by using FLAC. The findings indicate rather
positive results with each parameter.
Abstract: Mobile ad hoc network is a collection of mobile
nodes communicating through wireless channels without any
existing network infrastructure or centralized administration.
Because of the limited transmission range of wireless network
interfaces, multiple "hops" may be needed to exchange data
across the network. Consequently, many routing algorithms
have come into existence to satisfy the needs of
communications in such networks. Researchers have
conducted many simulations comparing the performance of
these routing protocols under various conditions and
constraints. One question that arises is whether speed of nodes
affects the relative performance of routing protocols being
studied. This paper addresses the question by simulating two
routing protocols AODV and DSDV. Protocols were
simulated using the ns-2 and were compared in terms of
packet delivery fraction, normalized routing load and average
delay, while varying number of nodes, and speed.
Abstract: This paper studies mechanical buckling of
functionally graded beams subjected to axial compressive load that is
simply supported at both ends lies on a continuous elastic foundation.
The displacement field of beam is assumed based on Engesser-Timoshenko beam theory. Applying the Hamilton's principle, the
equilibrium equation is established. The influences of dimensionless geometrical parameter, functionally graded index and foundation
coefficient on the critical buckling load of beam are presented. To investigate the accuracy of the present analysis, a compression study
is carried out with a known data.
Abstract: In order to apply partially filled steel grid composite deck as the horizontal supporting structure of various kinds of infrastructures, the variation of its flexural strength according to design parameters such as cross and longitudinal bars constituting the steel grid and the type of shear connection is evaluated and compared experimentally. The result shows that the design sensitivity of the deck to the spacing of the cross bars is insignificant in the case of structure with low risk of punching failure or without load distribution problem. By means of shear connection composed by transverse rebar and longitudinal bar without additional shear stud bolts, the complete interaction between steel grid and concrete slab is able to be achieved and the composite deck can develop its bending resistance capacity.
Abstract: It has been shown that a load discontinuity at the end of
an impulse will result in an extra impulse and hence an extra amplitude
distortion if a step-by-step integration method is employed to yield the
shock response. In order to overcome this difficulty, three remedies
are proposed to reduce the extra amplitude distortion. The first remedy
is to solve the momentum equation of motion instead of the force
equation of motion in the step-by-step solution of the shock response,
where an external momentum is used in the solution of the momentum
equation of motion. Since the external momentum is a resultant of the
time integration of external force, the problem of load discontinuity
will automatically disappear. The second remedy is to perform a single
small time step immediately upon termination of the applied impulse
while the other time steps can still be conducted by using the time step
determined from general considerations. This is because that the extra
impulse caused by a load discontinuity at the end of an impulse is
almost linearly proportional to the step size. Finally, the third remedy
is to use the average value of the two different values at the integration
point of the load discontinuity to replace the use of one of them for
loading input. The basic motivation of this remedy originates from the
concept of no loading input error associated with the integration point
of load discontinuity. The feasibility of the three remedies are
analytically explained and numerically illustrated.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of computer–based instructional designs, namely modality and redundancy principles on the attitude and learning of music theory among primary pupils of different Music Intelligence levels. The lesson of music theory was developed in three different modes, audio and image (AI), text with image (TI) and audio with image and text (AIT). The independent variables were the three modes of courseware. The moderator variable was music intelligence. The dependent variables were the post test score. ANOVA was used to determine the significant differences of the pretest scores among the three groups. Analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) and Post hoc were carried out to examine the main effects as well as the interaction effects of the independent variables on the dependent variables. High music intelligence pupils performed significantly better than low music intelligence pupils in all the three treatment modes. The AI mode was found to help pupils with low music intelligence significantly more than the TI and AIT modes.
Abstract: Extraction of Fe(III) from aqueous solution using Trin-
butyl Phosphate (TBP) as carrier needs a highly acidic medium
(>6N) as it favours formation of chelating complex FeCl3.TBP.
Similarly, stripping of Iron(III) from loaded organic solvents requires
neutral pH or alkaline medium to dissociate the same complex. It is
observed that TBP co-extracts acids along with metal, which causes
reversal of driving force of extraction and iron(III) is re-extracted
back from the strip phase into the feed phase during Liquid Emulsion
Membrane (LEM) pertraction. Therefore, rate of extraction of
different mineral acids (HCl, HNO3, H2SO4) using TBP with and
without presence of metal Fe(III) was examined. It is revealed that in
presence of metal acid extraction is enhanced. Determination of mass
transfer coefficient of both acid and metal extraction was performed
by using Bulk Liquid Membrane (BLM). The average mass transfer
coefficient was obtained by fitting the derived model equation with
experimentally obtained data. The mass transfer coefficient of the
mineral acid extraction is in the order of kHNO3 = 3.3x10-6m/s > kHCl =
6.05x10-7m/s > kH2SO4 = 1.85x10-7m/s. The distribution equilibria of
the above mentioned acids between aqueous feed solution and a
solution of tri-n-butyl-phosphate (TBP) in organic solvents have been
investigated. The stoichiometry of acid extraction reveals the
formation of TBP.2HCl, HNO3.2TBP, and TBP.H2SO4 complexes.
Moreover, extraction of Iron(III) by TBP in HCl aqueous solution
forms complex FeCl3.TBP.2HCl while in HNO3 medium forms
complex 3FeCl3.TBP.2HNO3
Abstract: Reduced switching loss favours Pulse Skipping
Modulation mode of switching dc-to-dc converters at light loads.
Under certain conditions the converter operates in discontinuous
conduction mode (DCM). Inductor current starts from zero in each
switching cycle as the switching frequency is constant and not
adequately high. A DC-to-DC buck converter is modelled and
simulated in this paper under DCM. Effect of ESR of the filter
capacitor in input current frequency components is studied. The
converter is studied for its operation under input voltage and load
variation. The operating frequency is selected to be close to and
above audio range.
Abstract: The Indian subcontinent is facing a massive challenge with regards to the energy security in member countries, i.e. providing a reliable source of electricity to facilitate development across various sectors of the economy and thereby achieve the developmental targets it has set for itself. A highly precarious situation exists in the subcontinent which is observed in the series of system failures which most of the times leads to system collapses-blackouts. To mitigate the issues related with energy security as well as keep in check the increasing supply demand gap, a possible solution that stands in front of the subcontinent is the deployment of an interconnected electricity ‘Supergrid’ designed to carry huge quanta of power across the sub continent as well as provide the infra structure for RES integration. This paper assesses the need and conditions for a Supergrid deployment and consequently proposes a meshed topology based on VSC HVDC converters for the Supergrid modeling.
Abstract: During last decades, developing multi-objective
evolutionary algorithms for optimization problems has found
considerable attention. Flexible job shop scheduling problem, as an
important scheduling optimization problem, has found this attention
too. However, most of the multi-objective algorithms that are
developed for this problem use nonprofessional approaches. In
another words, most of them combine their objectives and then solve
multi-objective problem through single objective approaches. Of
course, except some scarce researches that uses Pareto-based
algorithms. Therefore, in this paper, a new Pareto-based algorithm
called controlled elitism non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm
(CENSGA) is proposed for the multi-objective FJSP (MOFJSP). Our
considered objectives are makespan, critical machine work load, and
total work load of machines. The proposed algorithm is also
compared with one the best Pareto-based algorithms of the literature
on some multi-objective criteria, statistically.
Abstract: This paper presents a narrative management system
for organizations to capture organization's tacit knowledge
through stories. The intention of capturing tacit knowledge is to
address the problem that comes with the mobility of workforce in
organisation. Storytelling in knowledge management context is
seen as a powerful management tool to communicate tacit
knowledge in organization. This narrative management system is
developed firstly to enable uploading of many types of knowledge
sharing stories, from general to work related-specific stories and
secondly, each video has comment functionality where knowledge
users can post comments to other knowledge users. The narrative
management system allows the stories to browse, search and view
by the users. In the system, stories are stored in a video repository.
Stories that were produced from this framework will improve
learning, knowledge transfer facilitation and tacit knowledge
quality in an organization.
Abstract: The ability to predict an accurate temperature
distribution requires the knowledge of the losses, the thermal
characteristics of the materials, and the cooling conditions, all of
which are very difficult to quantify. In this paper, the impact of the
effects of iron and copper losses are investigated separately and
their effects on the heating in various points of the stator of an
induction motor, is highlighted by using two simple tests. In addition,
the effect of a defect, such as an open circuit in a phase of the stator,
on the heating is also obtained by a no-load test.
The squirrel cage induction motor is rated at 2.2 kW; 380 V; 5.2
A; Δ connected; 50 Hz; 1420 rpm and the class of insulation F, has
been thermally tested under several load conditions. Several
thermocouples were placed in strategic points of the stator.
Abstract: This paper describes a low-power second-order filter
for a continuous-time chopper stabilized capacitive sensor interface,
integrated with a fully differential post-CMOS surface-micromachined
MEMS pressure sensor. The circuit uses a single-ended
folded-cascode operational amplifier and two GM-C filters connected
in cascade. The circuit is realized in a 0.18 μm CMOS process and
offers differential to single-ended conversion. The novelty of the
scheme is the cascade of two GM-C filters to achieve a second-order
filter while minimizing power dissipation. The simulated filter cutoff
frequency is 1.14 kHz at common-mode voltage 1.65 V,
operating from a 3.3 V supply while dissipating 172μW of power.
The filter achieves an operating range of 1V for an output load of
1MOhm and 10pF.
Abstract: A local municipality has decided to build a sewage pit
to receive residential sewage waste arriving by tank trucks. Daily
accumulated waste are to be pumped to a nearby waste water
treatment facility to be re-consumed for agricultural and construction
projects. A discrete-event simulation model using Arena Software
was constructed to assist in defining the capacity of the system in
cubic meters, number of tank trucks to use the system, number of
unload docks required, number of standby areas needed and
manpower required for data collection at entrance checkpoint and
truck tank load toxicity testing. The results of the model are
statistically validated. Simulation turned out to be an excellent tool
in the facility planning effort for the pit project, as it insured smooth
flow lines of tank trucks load discharge and best utilization of
facilities on site.
Abstract: Lateral expansion is a factor defining the level of
confinement in reinforced concrete columns. Therefore, predicting
the lateral strain relationship with axial strain becomes an important
issue. Measuring lateral strains in experiments is difficult and only
few report experimental lateral strains. Among the existing analytical
formulations, two recent models are compared with available test
results in this paper with shortcomings highlighted. A new analytical
model is proposed here for lateral strain axial strain relationship and
is based on the supposition that the concrete behaves linear elastic in
the early stages of loading and then nonlinear hardening up to the
peak stress and then volumetric expansion. The proposal for the
lateral strain axial strain relationship after the peak stress is mainly
based on the hypothesis that the plastic lateral strain varies linearly
with the plastic axial strain and it is shown that this is related to the
lateral confinement level.
Abstract: In this paper a novel, simple and reliable digital firing
scheme has been implemented for speed control of three-phase
induction motor using ac voltage controller. The system consists of
three-phase supply connected to the three-phase induction motor via
three triacs and its control circuit. The ac voltage controller has three
modes of operation depending on the shape of supply current. The
performance of the induction motor differs in each mode where the
speed is directly proportional with firing angle in two modes and
inversely in the third one. So, the control system has to detect the
current mode of operation to choose the correct firing angle of triacs.
Three sensors are used to feed the line currents to control system to
detect the mode of operation. The control strategy is implemented
using a low cost Xilinx Spartan-3E field programmable gate array
(FPGA) device. Three PI-controllers are designed on FPGA to
control the system in the three-modes. Simulation of the system is
carried out using PSIM computer program. The simulation results
show stable operation for different loading conditions especially in
mode 2/3. The simulation results have been compared with the
experimental results from laboratory prototype.
Abstract: In this article, biomechanical aspects of hen-s eggshell as a natural ceramic structure are studied. The images, taken by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), are used to investigate the microscopic aspects of the egg. It is observed that eggshell has a three-layered microstructure with different morphological and structural characteristics. Studies on the eggshell membrane (ESM) as a prosperous tissue suggest that it is placed to prevent the penetration of microorganisms into the egg. Finally, numerical models of the egg are presented to study the stress distribution and its deformation under different loading conditions. The effects of two different types of loading (hydrostatic and point loadings) on two different shell models (with constant and variable thicknesses) are investigated in detail.
