Abstract: Nowadays, hand vein recognition has attracted more attentions in identification biometrics systems. Generally, hand vein image is acquired with low contrast and irregular illumination. Accordingly, if you have a good preprocessing of hand vein image, we can easy extracted the feature extraction even with simple binarization. In this paper, a proposed approach is processed to improve the quality of hand vein image. First, a brief survey on existing methods of enhancement is investigated. Then a Radon Like features method is applied to preprocessing hand vein image. Finally, experiments results show that the proposed method give the better effective and reliable in improving hand vein images.
Abstract: Detection of squirrel cage induction motor (SCIM) broken bars has long been an important but difficult job in the detection area of motor faults. Early detection of this abnormality in the motor would help to avoid costly breakdowns. A new detection method based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) is presented in this paper. Stator current in an induction motor will be measured and characteristic frequency components of faylted rotor will be detected by minimizing a fitness function using pso. Supply frequency and side band frequencies and their amplitudes can be estimated by the proposed method. The proposed method is applied to a faulty motor with one and two broken bars in different loading condition. Experimental results prove that the proposed method is effective and applicable.
Abstract: The energy consumption and delay in read/write
operation of conventional SRAM is investigated analytically as well
as by simulation. Explicit analytical expressions for the energy
consumption and delay in read and write operation as a function of
device parameters and supply voltage are derived. The expressions are
useful in predicting the effect of parameter changes on the energy
consumption and speed as well as in optimizing the design of
conventional SRAM. HSPICE simulation in standard 0.25μm CMOS
technology confirms precision of analytical expressions derived from
this paper.
Abstract: This paper presents preliminary results regarding system-level power awareness for FPGA implementations in wireless sensor networks. Re-configurability of field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) allows for significant flexibility in its applications to embedded systems. However, high power consumption in FPGA becomes a significant factor in design considerations. We present several ideas and their experimental verifications on how to optimize power consumption at high level of designing process while maintaining the same energy per operation (low-level methods can be used additionally). This paper demonstrates that it is possible to estimate feasible power consumption savings even at the high level of designing process. It is envisaged that our results can be also applied to other embedded systems applications, not limited to FPGA-based.
Abstract: A methodology to design a nonlinear observer in a
bond graph approach is proposed. The class of nonlinear observer
with multivariable nonlinearities is considered. A junction structure
of the bond graph observer is proposed. The proposed methodology
to an electrical transformer and a DC motor including the nonlinear
saturation is applied. Nonlinear observers for the transformer and DC
motor based on multivariable circle criterion in the physical domain
are proposed. In order to show the saturation effects on the
transformer and DC motor, simulation results are obtained. Finally,
the paper describes that convergence of the estimates to the true
states is achieved.
Abstract: This paper presents the applicability of artificial
neural networks for 24 hour ahead solar power generation forecasting
of a 20 kW photovoltaic system, the developed forecasting is suitable
for a reliable Microgrid energy management. In total four neural
networks were proposed, namely: multi-layred perceptron, radial
basis function, recurrent and a neural network ensemble consisting in
ensemble of bagged networks. Forecasting reliability of the proposed
neural networks was carried out in terms forecasting error
performance basing on statistical and graphical methods. The
experimental results showed that all the proposed networks achieved
an acceptable forecasting accuracy. In term of comparison the neural
network ensemble gives the highest precision forecasting comparing
to the conventional networks. In fact, each network of the ensemble
over-fits to some extent and leads to a diversity which enhances the
noise tolerance and the forecasting generalization performance
comparing to the conventional networks.
Abstract: One of the most important requirements for the
operation and planning activities of an electrical utility is the
prediction of load for the next hour to several days out, known as
short term load forecasting. This paper presents the development of
an artificial neural network based short-term load forecasting model.
The model can forecast daily load profiles with a load time of one
day for next 24 hours. In this method can divide days of year with
using average temperature. Groups make according linearity rate of
curve. Ultimate forecast for each group obtain with considering
weekday and weekend. This paper investigates effects of temperature
and humidity on consuming curve. For forecasting load curve of
holidays at first forecast pick and valley and then the neural network
forecast is re-shaped with the new data. The ANN-based load models
are trained using hourly historical. Load data and daily historical
max/min temperature and humidity data. The results of testing the
system on data from Yazd utility are reported.
Abstract: In developing a text-to-speech system, it is well
known that the accuracy of information extracted from a text is
crucial to produce high quality synthesized speech. In this paper, a
new scheme for converting text into its equivalent phonetic spelling
is introduced and developed. This method is applicable to many
applications in text to speech converting systems and has many
advantages over other methods. The proposed method can also
complement the other methods with a purpose of improving their
performance. The proposed method is a probabilistic model and is
based on Smooth Ergodic Hidden Markov Model. This model can be
considered as an extension to HMM. The proposed method is applied
to Persian language and its accuracy in converting text to speech
phonetics is evaluated using simulations.
Abstract: Power Spectral Density (PSD) of quasi-stationary processes can be efficiently estimated using the short time Fourier series (STFT). In this paper, an algorithm has been proposed that computes the PSD of quasi-stationary process efficiently using offline autoregressive model order estimation algorithm, recursive parameter estimation technique and modified sliding window discrete Fourier Transform algorithm. The main difference in this algorithm and STFT is that the sliding window (SW) and window for spectral estimation (WSA) are separately defined. WSA is updated and its PSD is computed only when change in statistics is detected in the SW. The computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is found to be lesser than that for standard STFT technique.
Abstract: In this paper, the application of neural networks to study the design of short-term temperature forecasting (STTF) Systems for Kermanshah city, west of Iran was explored. One important architecture of neural networks named Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) to model STTF systems is used. Our study based on MLP was trained and tested using ten years (1996-2006) meteorological data. The results show that MLP network has the minimum forecasting error and can be considered as a good method to model the STTF systems.
Abstract: Due to the high percentage of induction motors in industrial market, there exist a large opportunity for energy savings. Replacement of working induction motors with more efficient ones can be an important resource for energy savings. A calculation of energy savings and payback periods, as a result of such a replacement, based on nameplate motor efficiency or manufacture-s data can lead to large errors [1]. Efficiency of induction motors (IMs) can be extracted using some procedures that use the no-load test results. In the cases that we must estimate the efficiency on-line, some of these procedures can-t be efficient. In some cases the efficiency estimates using the rating values of the motor, but these procedures can have errors due to the different working condition of the motor. In this paper the efficiency of an IM estimated by using the genetic algorithm. The results are compared with the measured values of the torque and power. The results show smaller errors for this procedure compared with the conventional classical procedures, hence the cost of the equipments is reduced and on-line estimation of the efficiency can be made.
Abstract: This paper will discuss about an active power generator scheduling method in order to increase the limit level of steady state systems. Some power generator optimization methods such as Langrange, PLN (Indonesian electricity company) Operation, and the proposed Z-Thevenin-based method will be studied and compared in respect of their steady state aspects. A method proposed in this paper is built upon the thevenin equivalent impedance values between each load respected to each generator. The steady state stability index obtained with the REI DIMO method. This research will review the 500kV-Jawa-Bali interconnection system. The simulation results show that the proposed method has the highest limit level of steady state stability compared to other optimization techniques such as Lagrange, and PLN operation. Thus, the proposed method can be used to create the steady state stability limit of the system especially in the peak load condition.
Abstract: Magnetic Resonance Imaging play a vital role in the decision-diagnosis process of brain MR images. For an accurate diagnosis of brain related problems, the experts mostly compares both T1 and T2 weighted images as the information presented in these two images are complementary. In this paper, rotational and translational invariant form of Local binary Pattern (LBP) with additional gray scale information is used to retrieve similar slices of T1 weighted images from T2 weighted images or vice versa. The incorporation of additional gray scale information on LBP can extract more local texture information. The accuracy of retrieval can be improved by extracting moment features of LBP and reweighting the features based on users feedback. Here retrieval is done in a single subject scenario where similar images of a particular subject at a particular level are retrieved, and multiple subjects scenario where relevant images at a particular level across the subjects are retrieved.
Abstract: An automatic speech recognition system for the
formal Arabic language is needed. The Quran is the most formal
spoken book in Arabic, it is spoken all over the world. In this
research, an automatic speech recognizer for Quranic based speakerindependent
was developed and tested. The system was developed
based on the tri-phone Hidden Markov Model and Maximum
Likelihood Linear Regression (MLLR). The MLLR computes a set
of transformations which reduces the mismatch between an initial
model set and the adaptation data. It uses the regression class tree, as
well as, estimates a set of linear transformations for the mean and
variance parameters of a Gaussian mixture HMM system. The 30th
Chapter of the Quran, with five of the most famous readers of the
Quran, was used for the training and testing of the data. The chapter
includes about 2000 distinct words. The advantages of using the
Quranic verses as the database in this developed recognizer are the
uniqueness of the words and the high level of orderliness between
verses. The level of accuracy from the tested data ranged 68 to 85%.
Abstract: To minimize power losses, it is important to
determine the location and size of local generators to be placed in
unbalanced power distribution systems. On account of some inherent
features of unbalanced distribution systems, such as radial structure,
large number of nodes, a wide range of X/R ratios, the conventional
techniques developed for the transmission systems generally fail on
the determination of optimum size and location of distributed
generators (DGs). This paper presents a simple method for
investigating the problem of contemporaneously choosing best
location and size of DG in three-phase unbalanced radial distribution
system (URDS) for power loss minimization and to improve the
voltage profile of the system. Best location of the DG is determined
by using voltage index analysis and size of DG is computed by
variational technique algorithm according to available standard size
of DGs. This paper presents the results of simulations for 25-bus and
IEEE 37- bus Unbalanced Radial Distribution system.
Abstract: We present a low frequency watermarking method
adaptive to image content. The image content is analyzed and
properties of HVS are exploited to generate a visual mask of the
same size as the approximation image. Using this mask we embed the
watermark in the approximation image without degrading the image
quality. Watermark detection is performed without using the original
image. Experimental results show that the proposed watermarking
method is robust against most common image processing operations,
which can be easily implemented and usually do not degrade the
image quality.
Abstract: Ad hoc networks are characterized by multihop wireless connectivity, frequently changing network topology and the need for efficient dynamic routing protocols. We compare the performance of three routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks: Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) , Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV), location-aided routing(LAR1).The performance differentials are analyzed using varying network load, mobility, and network size. We simulate protocols with GLOMOSIM simulator. Based on the observations, we make recommendations about when the performance of either protocol can be best.
Abstract: We introduce an algorithm based on the
morphological shared-weight neural network. Being nonlinear and
translation-invariant, the MSNN can be used to create better
generalization during face recognition. Feature extraction is
performed on grayscale images using hit-miss transforms that are
independent of gray-level shifts. The output is then learned by
interacting with the classification process. The feature extraction and
classification networks are trained together, allowing the MSNN to
simultaneously learn feature extraction and classification for a face.
For evaluation, we test for robustness under variations in gray levels
and noise while varying the network-s configuration to optimize
recognition efficiency and processing time. Results show that the
MSNN performs better for grayscale image pattern classification
than ordinary neural networks.
Abstract: Decision support based upon risk analysis into
comparison of the electricity generation from different renewable

the environment and society. The aim of this paper is to develop the
assessment framework regarding risks to health and environment,
and the society-s benefits of the electric power plant generation from
different renewable sources. The multicriteria framework to
multiattribute risk analysis technique and the decision analysis
interview technique are applied in order to support the decisionmaking
process for the implementing renewable energy projects to
the Bangkok case study. Having analyses the local conditions and
appropriate technologies, five renewable power plants are postulated
as options. As this work demonstrates, the analysis can provide a tool
to aid decision-makers for achieving targets related to promote
sustainable energy system.
Abstract: The paper presents an investigation in to the effect of neural network predictive control of UPFC on the transient stability performance of a multimachine power system. The proposed controller consists of a neural network model of the test system. This model is used to predict the future control inputs using the damped Gauss-Newton method which employs ‘backtracking’ as the line search method for step selection. The benchmark 2 area, 4 machine system that mimics the behavior of large power systems is taken as the test system for the study and is subjected to three phase short circuit faults at different locations over a wide range of operating conditions. The simulation results clearly establish the robustness of the proposed controller to the fault location, an increase in the critical clearing time for the circuit breakers, and an improved damping of the power oscillations as compared to the conventional PI controller.
