Abstract: This paper describes a research project on Year 3 primary school students in Malaysia in their use of computer-based video game to enhance learning of multiplication facts (tables) in the Mathematics subject. This study attempts to investigate whether video games could actually contribute to positive effect on children-s learning or otherwise. In conducting this study, the researchers assume a neutral stand in the investigation as an unbiased outcome of the study would render reliable response to the impact of video games in education which would contribute to the literature of technology-based education as well as impact to the pedagogical aspect of formal education. In order to conduct the study, a subject (Mathematics) with a specific topic area in the subject (multiplication facts) is chosen. The study adopts a causal-comparative research to investigate the impact of the inclusion of a computer-based video game designed to teach multiplication facts to primary level students. Sample size is 100 students divided into two i.e., A: conventional group and B conventional group aided by video games. The conventional group (A) would be taught multiplication facts (timetables) and skills conventionally. The other group (B) underwent the same lessons but with supplementary activity: a computer-based video game on multiplication which is called Timez-Attack. Analysis of marks accrued from pre-test will be compared to post- test using comparisons of means, t tests, and ANOVA tests to investigate the impact of computer games as an added learning activity. The findings revealed that video games as a supplementary activity to classroom learning brings significant and positive effect on students- retention and mastery of multiplication tables as compared to students who rely only upon formal classroom instructions.
Abstract: An organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) was fabricated using a blended film containing Copper (II) tetrakis(4-acumylphenoxy) phthalocyanine (Tc-CuPc) along with [6,6]-Phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). Weight ratio between Tc-CuPc and PCBM was 1:1. The electrical properties of Tc-CuPc: PCBM BHJ were examined. Rectifying nature of the BHJ was displayed by current-voltage (I-V) curves, recorded in dark and at various temperatures. At low voltages, conduction was ohmic succeeded by space-charge limiting current (SCLC) conduction at higher voltages in which exponential trap distribution was dominant. Series resistance, shunt resistance, ideality factor, effective barrier height and mobility at room temperature were found to be 526 4, 482 k4, 3.7, 0.17 eV and 2×10-7 cm2V-1s-1 respectively. Temperature effect towards different BHJ parameters was observed under dark condition.
Abstract: This paper presents one of the best applications of wireless sensor network for campus Monitoring. With the help of PIR sensor, temperature sensor and humidity sensor, effective utilization of energy resources has been implemented in one of rooms of Sharda University, Greater Noida, India. The RISC microcontroller is used here for analysis of output of sensors and providing proper control using ZigBee protocol. Abstract: This study is about an application of King Bhumibol
Adulyadej’s “Learn Wisely” (LW) concept in instructional design
and management process at the Faculty of Education, Suan Sunahdha
Rajabhat University. The concept suggests four strategies for true
learning. Related literature and significant LW methods in teaching
and learning are also reviewed and then applied in designing a
pedagogy learning module. The design has been implemented in
three classrooms with a total of 115 sophomore student teachers.
After one consecutive semester of managing and adjusting the
process by instructors and experts using collected data from minutes,
assessment of learning management, satisfaction and learning
achievement of the students, it is found that the effective SSRU
model of LW instructional method comprises of five steps.
Abstract: The performance of mortar subjected to high
temperature and cooled in normal ambient temperature was examined
in the laboratory to comply with the situation of burning & cooling of
a structure. Four series of cubical (5 X 5 X 5 cm) mortar specimens
were made from OPC, and partial replacement (10, 15, 20, 25 &
30%) of OPC by Rice Husk Ash (RHA) produced in the uncontrolled
environment. These specimens were heated in electric furnace to 200,
300, 400, 500 and 7000C. The specimens were kept in normal room
temperature for cooling. They were then tested for mechanical
properties and the results shows that particular 20% RHA mixed
mortar shows better fire performance.
Abstract: The temperature distribution and the heat transfer
rates through a multi-layer door of a furnace were investigated. The
inside of the door was in contact with hot air and the other side of the
door was in contact with room air. Radiation heat transfer from the
walls of the furnace to the door and the door to the surrounding area
was included in the problem. This work is a two dimensional steady
state problem. The Churchill and Chu correlation was used to find
local convection heat transfer coefficients at the surfaces of the
furnace door. The thermophysical properties of air were the functions
of the temperatures. Polynomial curve fitting for the fluid properties
were carried out. Finite difference method was used to discretize for
conduction heat transfer within the furnace door. The Gauss-Seidel
Iteration was employed to compute the temperature distribution in
the door.
The temperature distribution in the horizontal mid plane of the
furnace door in a two dimensional problem agrees with the one
dimensional problem. The local convection heat transfer coefficients
at the inside and outside surfaces of the furnace door are exhibited.
Abstract: The rapid improvement of the microprocessor and network has made it possible for the PC cluster to compete with conventional supercomputers. Lots of high throughput type of applications can be satisfied by using the current desktop PCs, especially for those in PC classrooms, and leave the supercomputers for the demands from large scale high performance parallel computations. This paper presents our development on enabling an automated deployment mechanism for cluster computing to utilize the computing power of PCs such as reside in PC classroom. After well deployment, these PCs can be transformed into a pre-configured cluster computing resource immediately without touching the existing education/training environment installed on these PCs. Thus, the training activities will not be affected by this additional activity to harvest idle computing cycles. The time and manpower required to build and manage a computing platform in geographically distributed PC classrooms also can be reduced by this development.
Abstract: This paper examines and compares several of the most common real time methods. These methods are CORE, YSM, MASCOT, JSD, DARTS, RTSAD, ADARTS, CODARTS, HOOD, HRT-HOOD, ROOM, UML, UML-RT. The methods are compared using attributes like i) usability, ii) compositionality and iii) proper RT notations available. Finally some comparison results are given and discussed.
Abstract: Cooperative learning has been defined as learners working together as a team to solve a problem to complete a task or to accomplish a common goal, which emphasizes the importance of interactions among members to promote the whole learning performance. With the popularity of society networks, cooperative learning is no longer limited to traditional classroom teaching activities. Since society networks facilitate to organize online learners, to establish common shared visions, and to advance learning interaction, the online community and online learning community have triggered the establishment of web-based societies. Numerous research literatures have indicated that the collaborative learning community is a critical issue to enhance learning performance. Hence, this paper proposes a learning community recommendation approach to facilitate that a learner joins the appropriate learning communities, which is based on k-nearest neighbor (kNN) classification. To demonstrate the viability of the proposed approach, the proposed approach is implemented for 117 students to recommend learning communities. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach can effectively recommend appropriate learning communities for learners.
Abstract: We propose a novel prioritized limited
processor-sharing (PS) rule and a simulation algorithm for the performance evaluation of this rule. The performance measures of practical interest are evaluated using this algorithm. Suppose that there
are two classes and that an arriving (class-1 or class-2) request encounters n1 class-1 and n2 class-2 requests (including the arriving
one) in a single-server system. According to the proposed rule, class-1
requests individually and simultaneously receive m / (m * n1+ n2) of the service-facility capacity, whereas class-2 requests receive 1 / (m *n1 + n2) of it, if m * n1 + n2 ≤ C. Otherwise (m * n1 + n2 > C), the arriving request will be queued in the corresponding class waiting
room or rejected. Here, m (1) denotes the priority ratio, and C ( ∞), the service-facility capacity. In this rule, when a request arrives at [or
departs from] the system, the extension [shortening] of the remaining
sojourn time of each request receiving service can be calculated using
the number of requests of each class and the priority ratio. Employing
a simulation program to execute these events and calculations enables
us to analyze the performance of the proposed prioritized limited PS
rule, which is realistic in a time-sharing system (TSS) with a
sufficiently small time slot. Moreover, this simulation algorithm is
expanded for the evaluation of the prioritized limited PS system with
N 3 priority classes.
Abstract: In this paper, we give an overview of an online elearning
tool which has been developed for kids aged from nine to
eleven years old in Mauritius for the self-study of Mathematics in
order to prepare them for the CPE examination. The software does
not intend to render obsolete the existing pedagogical approaches.
Nowadays, the teaching-learning process is mainly focused towards
the class-room model. Moreover, most of the e-learning platforms
that exist are simply static ways of delivering resources using the
internet. There is nearly no interaction between the learner and the
tool. Our application will enable students to practice exercises online
and also work out sample examination papers. Another interesting
feature is that the kid will not have to wait for someone to correct the
work as the correction will be done online and on the spot. Additional
feedback is also provided for some exercises.
Abstract: In this study, mechanically alloyed Al 2024 powder is
densified by conventional sintering and by equal channel angular
pressing (ECAP) with and without back pressure. The powder was
encapsulated in an aluminium can for consolidation through ECAP.
The properties obtained in the compacts by conventional sintering
route and by ECAP are compared. The effect of conventional
sintering and ECAP on consolidation behaviour of powder,
microstructure, density and hardness is discussed. Room temperature
back pressure aided ECAP results in nearly full denser (97% of its
theoretical density) compact at room temperature. NanoIndentation
technique was used to determine the modulus of the consolidated
compacts.
Abstract: This paper focuses on the use of project work as a
pretext for applying the conventions of writing, or the correctness of
mechanics, usage, and sentence formation, in a content-based class in
a Rajabhat University. Its aim was to explore to what extent the
student teachers’ academic achievement of the basic writing features
against the 70% attainment target after the use of project is. The
organization of work around an agreed theme in which the students
reproduce language provided by texts and instructors is expected to
enhance students’ correct writing conventions. The sample of the
study comprised of 38 fourth-year English major students. The data
was collected by means of achievement test and student writing
works. The scores in the summative achievement test were analyzed
by mean score, standard deviation, and percentage. It was found that
the student teachers do more achieve of practicing mechanics and
usage, and less in sentence formation. The students benefited from
the exposure to texts during conducting the project; however, their
automaticity of how and when to form phrases and clauses into
simple/complex sentences had room for improvement.
Abstract: Operating rooms are important assets for hospitals as
they generate the largest revenue and, at the same time, produce the
largest cost for hospitals. The model presented in this paper helps
make capacity planning decisions on the combination of open
operating rooms (ORs) and estimated overtime to satisfy the
allocated OR time to each specialty. The model combines both
decisions on determining the amount of OR time to open and to
allocate to different surgical specialties. The decisions made are
based on OR costs, overutilization and underutilization costs, and
contribution margins from allocating OR time. The results show the
importance of having a good estimate of specialty usage of OR time
to determine the amount of needed capacity and highlighted the
tradeoff that the OR manager faces between opening more ORs
versus extending the working time of the ORs already in use.
Abstract: The purpose of this research study is to investigate the manner in which various loads affect the mechanical properties of the formed mild steel plates. The investigation focuses on examining the cross-sectional area of the metal plate at the centre of the formed mild steel plate. Six mild steel plates were deformed with different loads. The loads applied on the plates had a magnitude of 5 kg, 10 kg, 15 kg, 20 kg, 25 kg and 30 kg. The radius of the punching die was 120 mm and the loads were applied at room temperature. The investigations established that the applied load causes the Vickers microhardness at the cross-sectional area of the plate to increase due to strain hardening. Hence, the percentage increase of the hardness due to the load was found to be directly proportional to the increase in the load. Furthermore, the tensile test results for the parent material showed that the average Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) for the three samples was 308 MPa while the average Yield Strength and Percentage Elongation were 227 MPa and 38 % respectively. Similarly, the UTS of the formed components increased after the deformation of the plate, as such it can be concluded that the forming loads alter the mechanical properties of the materials by improving and strengthening the material properties.
Abstract: This paper reports an experimental study on a sleeping
thermal manikin in a room equipped with a mixing ventilation
system. In the experimental work, heat loss from the sleeping thermal
manikin was measured under different conditions. The supply air
temperature was in a range of 17°C to 27°C. Apart from the heat loss
of the sleeping thermal manikin, the velocity distributions and
temperature distributions were also measured in the experiments for
subsequent analysis.
Abstract: This paper explores the use of project work in a
content-based instruction in a Rajabhat University, a teacher college,
where student teachers are instructed to perform teaching roles
mainly in basic education level. Its aim is to link theory to practice,
and to help language teachers maximize the full potential of project
work for genuine communication and give real meaning to writing
activity. Two research questions are formulated to guide this study:
a) What is the academic achievement of the students- writing skill
against the 70% attainment target after the use of project to enhance
the skill? and b) To what degree is the development of the students-
writing skills during the course of project to enhance the skill? The
sample of the study comprised of 38 fourth-year English major
students. The data was collected by means of achievement test,
student writing works, and project diary. The scores in the summative
achievement test were analyzed by mean score, standard deviation,
and t-test. Project diary serves as students- record of the language
acquired during the project. List of structures and vocabulary noted in
the diary has shown students- ability to attend to, recognize, and
focus on meaningful patterns of language forms.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to study the practical
delivery room experience of nursing students. The respondents were
6 junior nursing students of Suranaree University of Technology who
had a direct experience from practicing in a delivery room between
January 9 and March 30, 2012 as part of Nursing Care of the Family
and Midwifery 3. The data was collected by using in-depth interview,
observation, and reflective report. The results of the study found that
the practical delivery room experience of nursing students consisted
of three issues: 1) stress and coping with stress during practical
exercise, 2) changes in daily routine, and 3) source during practical
exercise. The results of this study would lead to the understanding of
the meaning of the practical exercise of nursing students.

perspectives and possibilities in changing conditions environment.
The paper presents theoretical justification and evaluation of
qualitative e-learning development model in perspective of advancing
modern technologies. There have been analyzed principles of
qualitative e-learning in higher education, productivity of studying
process using modern technologies, different kind of methods and
future perspectives of e-learning in formal education. Theoretically
grounded and practically tested model of developing e-learning
methods using different technologies for different type of classroom,
which can be used in professor-s decision making process to choose
the most effective e-learning methods has been worked out.
Abstract: The blood ducts must be occluded to avoid loss of
blood from vessels in laparoscopic surgeries. This paper presents a
locking mechanism to be used in a ligation laparoscopic procedure
(LigLAP I), as an alternative solution for a stapling procedure.
Currently, stapling devices are being used to occlude vessels. Using
these devices may result in some problems, including injury of bile
duct, taking up a great deal of space behind the vessel, and bile leak.
In this new procedure, a two-layer suture occludes a vessel. A
locking mechanism is also required to hold the suture. Since there is
a limited space at the device tip, a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA)
actuator is used in this mechanism. Suitability for cleanroom
applications, small size, and silent performance are among the
advantages of SMA actuators in biomedical applications. An
experimental study is conducted to examine the function of the
locking mechanism. To set up the experiment, a prototype of a
locking mechanism is built using nitinol, which is a nickel-titanium
shape memory alloy. The locking mechanism successfully locks a
polymer suture for all runs of the experiment. In addition, the effects
of various surface materials on the applied pulling forces are studied.
Various materials are mounted at the mechanism tip to compare the
maximum pulling forces applied to the suture for each material. The
results show that the various surface materials on the device tip
provide large differences in the applied pulling forces.
