Abstract: This paper proposes a novel system for monitoring the
health of underground pipelines. Some of these pipelines transport
dangerous contents and any damage incurred might have catastrophic
consequences. However, most of these damage are unintentional and
usually a result of surrounding construction activities. In order to
prevent these potential damages, monitoring systems are
indispensable. This paper focuses on acoustically recognizing road
cutters since they prelude most construction activities in modern
cities. Acoustic recognition can be easily achieved by installing a
distributed computing sensor network along the pipelines and using
smart sensors to “listen" for potential threat; if there is a real threat,
raise some form of alarm. For efficient pipeline monitoring, a novel
monitoring approach is proposed. Principal Component Analysis
(PCA) was studied and applied. Eigenvalues were regarded as the
special signature that could characterize a sound sample, and were
thus used for the feature vector for sound recognition. The denoising
ability of PCA could make it robust to noise interference. One class
SVM was used for classifier. On-site experiment results show that the
proposed PCA and SVM based acoustic recognition system will be
very effective with a low tendency for raising false alarms.
Abstract: A mathematical model for the hydrodynamic
lubrication of parabolic slider bearings with couple stress lubricants
is presented. A numerical solution for the mathematical model using
finite element scheme is obtained using three nodes isoparametric
quadratic elements. Stiffness integrals obtained from the weak form
of the governing equations were solved using Gauss Quadrature to
obtain a finite number of stiffness matrices. The global system of
equations was obtained for the bearing and solved using Gauss Seidel
iterative scheme. The converged pressure solution was used to obtain
the load capacity of the bearing. Parametric studies were carried out
and it was shown that the effect of couple stresses and profile
parameter are to increase the load carrying capacity of the parabolic
slider bearing. Numerical experiments reveal that the magnitude of
the profile parameter at which maximum load is obtained increases
with decrease in couple stress parameter. The results are presented in
graphical form.
Abstract: We presented results of research aimed on findings

Constantine the Philosopher University- future teachers within their
undergraduate preparation) on the choice of intrapersonal and
interpersonal features. After social- psychological training using
Interpersonal Check List (ICL) we found out shift of behavior to
more adaptive forms in categories, which are characterized by
extroversive friendly behavior, willingness to cooperation,
conformity regard to social situation, responsible and regardful
behavior.
Using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) we found out the cut
down of state anxiety and of trait anxiety. The report was processed
within grants KEGA 3/5269/07 and VEGA 1/3675/06.
Abstract: Noise has adverse effect on human health and
comfort. Noise not only cause hearing impairment, but it also acts as
a causal factor for stress and raising systolic pressure. Additionally it
can be a causal factor in work accidents, both by marking hazards
and warning signals and by impeding concentration. Industry
workers also suffer psychological and physical stress as well as
hearing loss due to industrial noise. This paper proposes an approach
to enable engineers to point out quantitatively the noisiest source for
modification, while multiple machines are operating simultaneously.
The model with the point source and spherical radiation in a free field
was adopted to formulate the problem. The procedure works very
well in ideal cases (point source and free field). However, most of the
industrial noise problems are complicated by the fact that the noise is
confined in a room. Reflections from the walls, floor, ceiling, and
equipment in a room create a reverberant sound field that alters the
sound wave characteristics from those for the free field. So the model
was validated for relatively low absorption room at NIT Kurukshetra
Central Workshop. The results of validation pointed out that the
estimated sound power of noise sources under simultaneous
conditions were on lower side, within the error limits 3.56 - 6.35 %.
Thus suggesting the use of this methodology for practical
implementation in industry. To demonstrate the application of the
above analytical procedure for estimating the sound power of noise
sources under simultaneous operating conditions, a manufacturing
facility (Railway Workshop at Yamunanagar, India) having five
sound sources (machines) on its workshop floor is considered in this
study. The findings of the case study had identified the two most
effective candidates (noise sources) for noise control in the Railway
Workshop Yamunanagar, India. The study suggests that the
modification in the design and/or replacement of these two identified
noisiest sources (machine) would be necessary so as to achieve an
effective reduction in noise levels. Further, the estimated data allows
engineers to better understand the noise situations of the workplace
and to revise the map when changes occur in noise level due to a
workplace re-layout.
Abstract: The increasing industrialization and motorization of the world has led to a steep rise for the demand of petroleum-based fuels. Petroleum-based fuels are obtained from limited reserves. These finite reserves are highly concentrated in certain regions of the world. Therefore, those countries not having these resources are facing energy/foreign exchange crisis, mainly due to the import of crude petroleum. Hence, it is necessary to look for alternative fuels which can be produced from resources available locally within the country such as alcohol, biodiesel, vegetable oils etc. Biodiesel is a renewable, domestically produced fuel that has been shown to reduce particulate, hydrocarbon, and carbon monoxide emissions from combustion. In the present study an experimental investigation on emission characteristic of a liquid burner system operating on several percentage of biodiesel and gas oil is carried out. Samples of exhaust gas are analysed with Testo 350 Xl. The results show that biodiesel can lower some pollutant such as CO, CO2 and particulate matter emissions while NOx emission would increase in comparison with gas oil. The results indicate there may be benefits to using biodiesel in industrial processes.
Abstract: In this paper, a low noise microwave bandpass filter
(BPF) is presented. This filter is fabricated by modifying the
conventional cross-coupled structure. The spurious response is
improved by using the end open coupled lines, and the influence of the
noise is minimized. Impedance matrix of the open end coupled circuit
clarifies the characteristic of the suppression of the spurious response.
The rejection of spurious suppression region of the proposed filter is
greater than 20 dB from 3-13 GHz. The measured results of the
fabricated filter confirm the concepts of the proposed design and
exhibits high performance.
Abstract: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is frequently characterized by
autonomic nervous dysfunction. Analysis of heart rate variability
(HRV) has become a popular noninvasive tool for assessing the
activities of autonomic nervous system (ANS). In this paper, changes
in ANS activity are quantified by means of frequency and time
domain analysis of R-R interval variability. Electrocardiograms
(ECG) of 16 patients suffering from DM and of 16 healthy volunteers
were recorded. Frequency domain analysis of extracted normal to
normal interval (NN interval) data indicates significant difference in
very low frequency (VLF) power, low frequency (LF) power and
high frequency (HF) power, between the DM patients and control
group. Time domain measures, standard deviation of NN interval
(SDNN), root mean square of successive NN interval differences
(RMSSD), successive NN intervals differing more than 50 ms (NN50
Count), percentage value of NN50 count (pNN50), HRV triangular
index and triangular interpolation of NN intervals (TINN) also show
significant difference between the DM patients and control group.

pattern.
Abstract: The study was conducted to evaluate the quality
characteristics of cookies produced from sweet potato-fermented
soybean flour. Cookies were subjected to proximate and sensory
analysis to determine the acceptability of the product. Protein, fat and
ash increased as the proportion of soybean flour increased, ranging
from 13.8-21.7, 1.22-5.25 and 2.20-2.57 respectively. The crude fibre
content was within the range of 3.08-4.83%. The moisture content of
the cookies decreased with increase in soybean flour from 3.42-
2.13%. Cookies produced from whole sweet potato flour had the
highest moisture content of 3.42% while 30% substitution had the
lowest moisture content 2.13%. A nine point hedonic scale was used
to evaluate the organoleptic characteristics of the cookies. The
sensory analysis indicated that there was no significant difference
between the cookies produced even when compared to the control
100% sweet potato cookies. The overall acceptance of the cookies
was ranked to 20% soybean flour substitute.
Abstract: In the present paper, a numerical investigation has
been carried out to classify and clarify the effects of paramount
parameters on turbulent impinging slot jets. The effects of nozzle-s
exit turbulent intensity, distance between nozzle and impinging plate
are studied at Reynolds number 5000 and 20000. In addition, the
effect of Mach number that is varied between 0.3-0.8 at a constant
Reynolds number 133000 is investigated to elucidate the effect of
compressibility in impinging jet upon a flat plate. The wall that is
located at the same level with nozzle-s exit confines the flow. A
compressible finite volume solver is implemented for simulation the
flow behavior. One equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulent model is
used to simulate turbulent flow at this study. Assessment of the
Spalart-Allmaras turbulent model at high nozzle to plate distance,
and giving enough insights to characterize the effect of Mach number
at high Reynolds number for the complex impinging jet flow are the
remarkable results of this study.

The aim of the paper is given some guidance and reference for machine designer which are interested in IPM machine selection for high performance traction application.
Abstract: Probabilistic characteristics of seismic responses of the
Partially Restrained connection rotation (PRCR) and panel zone
deformation (PZD) installed in older steel moment frames were
investigated in accordance with statistical inference in
decision-making process. The 4, 6 and 8 story older steel moment
frames with clip angle and T-stub connections were designed and
analyzed using 2%/50yrs ground motions in four cities of the
Mid-America earthquake region. The probability density function and
cumulative distribution function of PRCR and PZD were determined
by the goodness-of-fit tests based on probabilistic parameters
measured from the results of the nonlinear time-history analyses. The
obtained probabilistic parameters and distributions can be used to find
out what performance level mainly PR connections and panel zones
satisfy and how many PR connections and panel zones experience a
serious damage under the Mid-America ground motions.
Abstract: The present contribution deals with the
thermophoretic deposition of nanoparticles over a rapidly rotating
permeable disk in the presence of partial slip, magnetic field, thermal
radiation, thermal-diffusion, and diffusion-thermo effects. The
governing nonlinear partial differential equations such as continuity,
momentum, energy and concentration are transformed into nonlinear
ordinary differential equations using similarity analysis, and the
solutions are obtained through the very efficient computer algebra
software MATLAB. Graphical results for non-dimensional
concentration and temperature profiles including thermophoretic
deposition velocity and Stanton number (thermophoretic deposition
flux) in tabular forms are presented for a range of values of the
parameters characterizing the flow field. It is observed that slip
mechanism, thermal-diffusion, diffusion-thermo, magnetic field and
radiation significantly control the thermophoretic particles deposition
rate. The obtained results may be useful to many industrial and
engineering applications.
Abstract: Mathematical models of dynamics employing exterior calculus are mathematical representations of the same unifying principle; namely, the description of a dynamic system with a characteristic differential one-form on an odd-dimensional differentiable manifold leads, by analysis with exterior calculus, to a set of differential equations and a characteristic tangent vector (vortex vector) which define transformations of the system. Using this principle, a mathematical model for economic growth is constructed by proposing a characteristic differential one-form for economic growth dynamics (analogous to the action in Hamiltonian dynamics), then generating a pair of characteristic differential equations and solving these equations for the rate of economic growth as a function of labor and capital. By contracting the characteristic differential one-form with the vortex vector, the Lagrangian for economic growth dynamics is obtained.
Abstract: The study analyzed the risk and returns of commercial-property in Southwestern Nigeria and selected stocksmarket investment between 2000 and 2009; compared the inflation hedging characteristics and diversification potentials of investing in commercial-property and selected stock- market investment. Primary data were collected on characteristics, rental and capital values of commercial- properties from their property managers through the use of questionnaire. Secondary data on stock prices and dividends on banking, insurance and conglomerates sectors were sourced from the Nigerian Stock Exchange (2000-2009). The result showed that average return on all the selected stock- investments was higher than that of commercial-property. As regards risk, commercial-property indicated lower risk, compared to stocks. Also the stock-investment had better inflation hedging capacity than commercial-properties; combination of both had diversification potentials. The study concluded that stock-market investment offered attractive higher return than commercial-property although with higher risk and there could be diversification benefits in combining commercial-property with stock- investment.
Abstract: We report a lithography-free approach to fabricate the
biomimetics, quasi-beehive Si nanostructures (QBSNs), on
Si-substrates. The self-assembled SiGe nanoislands via the strain
induced surface roughening (Asaro-Tiller-Grinfeld instability) during
in-situ annealing play a key role as patterned sacrifice regions for
subsequent reactive ion etching (RIE) process performed for
fabricating quasi-beehive nanostructures on Si-substrates. As the
measurements of field emission, the bare QBSNs show poor field
emission performance, resulted from the existence of the native oxide
layer which forms an insurmountable barrier for electron emission. In
order to dramatically improve the field emission characteristics, the
platinum nanopillars (Pt-NPs) were deposited on QBSNs to form
Pt-NPs/QBSNs heterostructures. The turn-on field of Pt-NPs/QBSNs
is as low as 2.29 V/μm (corresponding current density of 1 μA/cm2),
and the field enhancement factor (β-value) is significantly increased to
6067. More importantly, the uniform and continuous electrons excite
light emission, due to the surrounding filed emitters from
Pt-NPs/QBSNs, can be easily obtained. This approach does not require
an expensive photolithographic process and possesses great potential
for applications.

Abstract: The uses of road map in daily activities are numerous
but it is a hassle to construct and update a road map whenever there
are changes. In Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, research on Automatic
Road Extraction (ARE) was explored to solve the difficulties in
updating road map. The research started with using Satellite Image
(SI), or in short, the ARE-SI project. A Hybrid Simple Colour Space
Segmentation & Edge Detection (Hybrid SCSS-EDGE) algorithm
was developed to extract roads automatically from satellite-taken
images. In order to extract the road network accurately, the satellite
image must be analyzed prior to the extraction process. The
characteristics of these elements are analyzed and consequently the
relationships among them are determined. In this study, the road
regions are extracted based on colour space elements and edge details
of roads. Besides, edge detection method is applied to further filter
out the non-road regions. The extracted road regions are validated by
using a segmentation method. These results are valuable for building
road map and detecting the changes of the existing road database.
The proposed Hybrid Simple Colour Space Segmentation and Edge
Detection (Hybrid SCSS-EDGE) algorithm can perform the tasks
fully automatic, where the user only needs to input a high-resolution
satellite image and wait for the result. Moreover, this system can
work on complex road network and generate the extraction result in
seconds.
Abstract: In the present study, a steady-state simulation model
has been developed to evaluate the system performance of a
transcritical carbon dioxide heat pump system for simultaneous water
cooling and heating. Both the evaporator (including both two-phase
and superheated zone) and gas cooler models consider the highly
variable heat transfer characteristics of CO2 and pressure drop. The
numerical simulation model of transcritical CO2 heat pump has been
validated by test data obtained from experiments on the heat pump
prototype. Comparison between the test results and the model
prediction for system COP variation with compressor discharge
pressure shows a modest agreement with a maximum deviation of
15% and the trends are fairly similar. Comparison for other operating
parameters also shows fairly similar deviation between the test
results and the model prediction. Finally, the simulation results are
presented to study the effects of operating parameters such as,
temperature of heat exchanger fluid at the inlet, discharge pressure,
compressor speed on system performance of CO2 heat pump, suitable
in a dairy plant where simultaneous cooling at 4oC and heating at
73oC are required. Results show that good heat transfer properties of
CO2 for both two-phase and supercritical region and efficient
compression process contribute a lot for high system COPs.
Abstract: According to the theory of capital structure, this paper uses principal component analysis and linear regression analysis to study the relationship between the debt characteristics of the private listed companies in Jiangsu Province and their business performance. The results show that the average debt ratio of the 29 private listed companies selected from the sample is lower. And it is found that for the sample whose debt ratio is lower than 80%, its debt ratio is negatively related to corporate performance, while for the sample whose debt ratio is beyond 80%, the relationship of debt financing and enterprise performance shows the different trends. The conclusions reflect the drawbacks may exist that the debt ratio is relatively low and having not take full advantage of debt governance effect of the private listed companies in Jiangsu Province.
