Abstract: Most flexible rotors can be considered as beam-like
structures. In many cases, rotors are modeled as one-dimensional
bodies, made basically of beam-like shafts with rigid bodies attached
to them. This approach is typical of rotor dynamics, both analytical
and numerical, and several rotor dynamic codes, based on the finite
element method, follow this trend. In this paper, a finite element
model based on Timoshenko beam elements is utilized to analyze the
lateral dynamic behavior of a certain rotor-bearing system in
operating conditions.
Abstract: This paper presents the variation of the dynamic
characteristics of a spindle with the change of bearing preload. The
correlations between the variation of bearing preload and fundamental
modal parameters were first examined by conducting vibration tests on
physical spindle units. Experimental measurements show that the
dynamic compliance and damping ratio associated with the
dominating modes were affected to vary with variation of the bearing
preload. When the bearing preload was slightly deviated from a
standard value, the modal frequency and damping ability also vary to
different extent, which further enable the spindle to perform with
different compliance. For the spindle used in this study, a standard
preload value set on bearings would enable the spindle to behave a
higher stiffness as compared with others with a preload variation. This
characteristic can be served as a reference to examine the variation of
bearing preload of spindle in assemblage or operation.
Abstract: During welding, the amount of heat present in weld
zones determines the quality of weldment produced. Thus, the heat
distribution characteristics and its magnitude in weld zones with
respect to process variables such as tool pin-shoulder rotational and
traveling speed during welding is analyzed using thermal finite
element analyses method. For this purpose, transient thermal finite
element analyses are performed to model the temperatures
distribution and its quantities in weld-zones with respect to process
variables such as rotational speed and traveling speed during welding.
Commercially available software Altair HyperWork is used to model
three-dimensional tool pin-shoulder vs. workpieces and to simulate
the friction stir process. The results show that increasing tool
rotational speed, at a constant traveling speed, will increase the
amount of heat generated in weld-zones. In contrary, increasing
traveling speed, at constant tool pin-shoulder rotational speeds, will
reduce the amount of heat generated in weld zones.
Abstract: Two types of commercial cylindrical lithium ion
batteries (Panasonic 3.4 Ah NCR-18650B and Samsung 2.9 Ah
INR-18650), were investigated experimentally. The capacities of these
samples were individually measured using constant current-constant
voltage (CC-CV) method at different ambient temperatures (-10°C,
0°C, 25°C). Their internal resistance was determined by
electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and pulse discharge
methods. The cells with different configurations of parallel connection
NCR-NCR, INR-INR and NCR-INR were charged/discharged at the
aforementioned ambient temperatures. The results showed that the
difference of internal resistance between cells much more evident at
low temperatures. Furthermore, the parallel connection of NCR-NCR
exhibits the most uniform temperature distribution in cells at -10°C,
this feature is quite favorable for the safety of the battery pack.
Abstract: In this paper we make a temperature investigations in
two type of superposed crimped connections using experimental
determinations. All the samples use 8 copper wire 7.1 x 3 mm2
crimped by two methods: the first method uses one crimp indents and
the second is a proposed method with two crimp indents. The ferrule
is a parallel one. We study the influence of number and position of
crimp indents. The samples are heated in A.C. current at different
current values until steady state heating regime. After obtaining of
temperature values, we compare them and present the conclusion.
Abstract: Composite materials have important assets compared
to traditional materials. They bring many functional advantages:
lightness, mechanical resistance and chemical, etc. In the present
study we examine the effect of a circular central notch and a precrack
on the tensile fracture of two woven composite materials. The tensile
tests were applied to a standardized specimen, notched and a
precarcked (orientation of the crack 0°, 45° and 90°). These tensile
tests were elaborated according to an experimental planning design of
the type 23.31 requiring 24 experiments with three repetitions. By the
analysis of regression, we obtained a mathematical model describing
the maximum load according to the influential parameters (hole
diameter, precrack length, angle of a precrack orientation). The
specimens precracked at 90° have a better behavior than those having
a precrack at 45° and still better than those having of the precracks
oriented at 0°. In addition the maximum load is inversely
proportional to the notch size.
Abstract: The most important part of modern lean low NOx combustors is a premixer where swirlers are often used for intensification of mixing processes and further formation of required flow pattern in combustor liner. Swirling flow leads to formation of complex eddy structures causing flow perturbations. It is able to cause combustion instability. Therefore, at design phase, it is necessary to pay great attention to aerodynamics of premixers. Analysis based on unsteady CFD modeling of swirling flow in production combustor swirler showed presence of large number of different eddy structures that can be conditionally divided into three types relative to its location of origin and a propagation path. Further, features of each eddy type were subsequently defined. Comparison of calculated and experimental pressure fluctuations spectrums verified correctness of computations.
Abstract: In this study, the evaluation of thermal stability of the
micrometer-sized silica particle reinforced epoxy composite was
carried out through the measurement of thermal expansion coefficient
and Young’s modulus of the specimens. For all the specimens in this
study from the baseline to those containing 50 wt% silica filler, the
thermal expansion coefficients and the Young’s moduli were
gradually decreased down to 20% and increased up to 41%,
respectively. The experimental results were compared with fillervolume-
based simple empirical relations. The experimental results of
thermal expansion coefficients correspond with those of Thomas’s
model which is modified from the rule of mixture. However, the
measured result for Young’s modulus tends to be increased slightly.
The differences in increments of the moduli between experimental and
numerical model data are quite large.
Abstract: In this numerical study, we want to present the design
of highly efficient extruded-type heat sink. The symmetrically
arranged extruded-type heat sinks are used instead of a single extruded
or swaged-type heat sink. In this parametric study, the maximum
temperatures, the base temperatures between heaters, and the heat
release rates were investigated with respect to the arrangements of heat
sources, air flow rates, and amounts of heat input. Based on the results
we believe that the use of both side of heat sink is to be much better for
release the heat than the use of single side. Also from the results, it is
believed that the symmetric arrangement of heat sources is
recommended to achieve a higher heat transfer from the heat sink.
Abstract: In this work, we propose the application of Japanese
“Origami” art for a floating function of a small aerial vehicle such as a
hexarotor. A preliminary experiment was conducted using Origami
magic balls mounted under a hexarotor. This magic ball can expand
and shrink using an air pump during free flying. Using this interesting
and functional concept, it promises to reduce the resistance of wind as
well as reduce the energy consumption when the Origami balls are
deflated. This approach can be particularly useful in rescue emergency
situations. Furthermore, there are many unexpected reasons that may
cause the multi-rotor has to land on the surface of water due to
problems with the communication between the aircraft and the ground
station. In addition, a complementary experiment was designed to
prove that the hexarotor can fly maintaining the stability and also,
takes off and lands on the surface of water using air balloons.
Abstract: As the human race will continue to explore the space
by creating new space transportation means and sending them to other
planets, the enhance of atmospheric reentry study is crucial. In this
context, an analysis of mass recession rate of ablative materials for
thermal shields of reentry spacecrafts is important to be carried out.
The paper describes a new estimation method for calculating the mass
recession of an ablator system made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic
materials. This method is based on Arrhenius equation for low
temperatures and, for high temperatures, on a theory applied for the
recession phenomenon of carbon fiber reinforced plastic materials,
theory which takes into account the presence of the resin inside the
materials. The space mission of USERS spacecraft is considered as a
case study.
Abstract: Theoretical optimization of a copper-water negative
inclination heat pipe with internal composite wick structure had been
performed, regarding a new introduced parameter: the ratio between
the coarse mesh wraps and the fine mesh wraps of the composite
wick. Since in many cases, the design of a heat pipe matches specific
thermal requirements and physical limitations, this work
demonstrates the optimization of a 1m length, 8mm internal diameter
heat pipe without an adiabatic section, at a negative inclination angle
of -10º. The optimization is based on a new introduced parameter, LR:
the ratio between the coarse mesh wraps and the fine mesh wraps.
Abstract: This paper is devoted to the study of a viscous
incompressible flow around a circular cylinder performing harmonic
oscillations, especially the steady streaming phenomenon. The
research methodology is based on the asymptotic explanation method
combined with the computational bifurcation analysis. The research
approach develops Schlichting and Wang decomposition method.
Present studies allow to identify several regimes of the secondary
streaming with different flow structures. The results of the research
are in good agreement with experimental and numerical simulation
data.
Abstract: This paper presents a 4-DOF nonlinear model of a
cracked de Laval rotor-stator system derived based on Energy
Principles. The model has been used to simulate coupled torsionallateral
response of the faulty system with multiple parametric
excitations; rotor-stator-rub, a breathing transverse crack, eccentric
mass and an axial force. Nonlinearity of a “breathing” crack is
incorporated in the model using a simple hinge mechanism suitable
for a shallow crack. Response of the system while passing via its
critical speed with intermittent rotor-stator rub is analyzed. Effects of
eccentricity with phase and acceleration are investigated. Features of
crack, rub and eccentricity in vibration response are explored for
condition monitoring. The presence of a crack and rub are observable
in the power spectrum despite excitations by an axial force and rotor
unbalance. Obtained results are consistent with existing literature and
could be adopted into rotor condition monitoring strategies.
Abstract: In this paper, the effect of WC-12Co particle
temperature in HVOF thermal spraying process on the coating
thickness has been studied. The statistical results show that the spray
distance and oxygen-to-fuel ratio are effective factors on particle
characterization and thickness of HVOF thermal spraying coatings.
Spray Watch diagnostic system, scanning electron microscopy
(SEM), X-ray diffraction and thickness measuring system were used
for this purpose.
Abstract: Stress Corrosion Crack (SCC) in pipeline is a type of
environmentally assisted cracking (EAC), since its discovery in 1965
as a possible cause of failure in pipeline, SCC has caused, on
average, one of two failures per year in the U.S, According to the
NACE SCC DA a pipe line segment is considered susceptible to SCC
if all of the following factors are met: The operating stress exceeds
60% of specified minimum yield strength (SMYS), the operating
temperature exceeds 38°C, the segment is less than 32 km
downstream from a compressor station, the age of the pipeline is
greater than 10 years and the coating type is other than Fusion
Bonded Epoxy(FBE). In this paper as a practical experience in
NISOC, Direct Assessment (DA) Method is used for identification
SCC defect in unpiggable pipeline located downstream of
compressor station.
Abstract: This paper presents the design analysis of saddle
support of a horizontal pressure vessel. Since saddle have the vital
role to support the pressure vessel and to maintain its stability, it
should be designed in such a way that it can afford the vessel load
and internal pressure of the vessel due to liquid contained in the
vessel. A model of horizontal pressure vessel and saddle support is
created in ANSYS. Stresses are calculated using mathematical
approach and ANSYS software. The analysis reveals the zone of high
localized stress at the junction part of the pressure vessel and saddle
support due to operating conditions. The results obtained by both the
methods are compared with allowable stress value for safe designing.
Abstract: A finite difference/front tracking method is used to
study the motion of three-dimensional deformable drops suspended in
plane Poiseuille flow at non-zero Reynolds numbers. A parallel
version of the code was used to study the behavior of suspension on a
reasonable grid resolution (grids). The viscosity and density of drops
are assumed to be equal to that of the suspending medium. The effect
of the Reynolds number is studied in detail. It is found that drops
with small deformation behave like rigid particles and migrate to an
equilibrium position about half way between the wall and the
centerline (the Segre-Silberberg effect). However, for highly
deformable drops there is a tendency for drops to migrate to the
middle of the channel, and the maximum concentration occurs at the
centerline. The effective viscosity of suspension and the fluctuation
energy of the flow across the channel increases with the Reynolds
number of the flow.
Abstract: This work presents a Computational Fluid Dynamics
(CFD) simulation of a butterfly valve used to control the flow of
combustible gas mixture in an industrial process setting.The work
uses CFD simulation to analyze the flow characteristics in the
vicinity of the valve, including the pressure distributions and
Frequency spectrum of the pressure pulsations downstream the valves
and the vortex shedding allow predicting the torque fluctuations
acting on the valve shaft and the possibility of generating mechanical
vibration and resonance.These fluctuations are due to aerodynamic
torque resulting from fluid turbulence and vortex shedding in the
valve vicinity.
The valve analyzed is located in a pipeline between two opposing
90o elbows, which exposes the valve and the surrounding structure to
the turbulence generated upstream and downstream the elbows at
either end of the pipe.CFD simulations show that the best location for
the valve from a vibration point of view is in the middle of the pipe
joining the elbows.
Abstract: Recently, there have been a lot of earthquakes in Japan.
It is necessary to promote seismic isolation devices for buildings. The
devices have been hardly diffused in attached houses, because the
devices are very expensive. We should develop a low-cost seismic
isolation device for detached houses. We suggested a new seismic
isolation device which uses a two-layer circular tube as a unit. If
hysteresis is produced in the two-layer circular tube under lateral
compression load, we think that the two-layer circular tube can have
energy absorbing capacity. It is necessary to contact the outer layer
and the inner layer to produce hysteresis. We have previously reported
how the inner layer comes in contact with the outer layer from a
perspective of analysis used mechanics of materials. We have clarified
that the inner layer comes in contact with the outer layer under a lateral
compression load. In this paper, we explored contact area between the
outer layer and the inner layer under a lateral compression load by
using FEA. We think that changing the inner layer’s thickness is
effective in increase the contact area. In order to change the inner
layer’s thickness, we changed the shape of the inner layer. As a result,
the contact area changes depending on the inner layer’s thickness.
Additionally, we experimented to check whether hysteresis occurs in
fact. As a consequence, we can reveal hysteresis in the two-layer
circular tube under the condition.
