Abstract: In this article an isotropic linear elastic half-space with
a cylindrical cavity of finite length is considered to be under the
effect of a ring shape time-harmonic torsion force applied at an
arbitrary depth on the surface of the cavity. The equation of
equilibrium has been written in a cylindrical coordinate system. By
means of Fourier cosine integral transform, the non-zero
displacement component is obtained in the transformed domain. With
the aid of the inversion theorem of the Fourier cosine integral
transform, the displacement is obtained in the real domain. With the
aid of boundary conditions, the involved boundary value problem for
the fundamental solution is reduced to a generalized Cauchy singular
integral equation. Integral representation of the stress and
displacement are obtained, and it is shown that their degenerated
form to the static problem coincides with existing solutions in the
literature.
Abstract: The myocardial sintigraphy is an imaging modality which provides functional informations. Whereas, coronarography modality gives useful informations about coronary arteries anatomy. In case of coronary artery disease (CAD), the coronarography can not determine precisely which moderate lesions (artery reduction between 50% and 70%), known as the “gray zone", are haemodynamicaly significant. In this paper, we aim to define the relationship between the location and the degree of the stenosis in coronary arteries and the observed perfusion on the myocardial scintigraphy. This allows us to model the impact evolution of these stenoses in order to justify a coronarography or to avoid it for patients suspected being in the gray zone. Our approach is decomposed in two steps. The first step consists in modelling a coronary artery bed and stenoses of different location and degree. The second step consists in modelling the left ventricle at stress and at rest using the sphercical harmonics model and myocardial scintigraphic data. We use the spherical harmonics descriptors to analyse left ventricle model deformation between stress and rest which permits us to conclude if ever an ischemia exists and to quantify it.
Abstract: Above Elbow Prosthesis is one of the most commonly
amputated or missing limbs. The research is done for modelling
techniques of upper limb prosthesis and design of high torque, light
weight and compact in size elbow actuator. The purposed actuator
consists of a DC motor, planetary gear set and a harmonic drive. The
calculations show that the actuator is good enough to be used in real
life powered prosthetic upper limb or rehabilitation exoskeleton.
Abstract: This paper presents a fuzzy logic controlled shunt
active power filter used to compensate for harmonic distortion in three-phase four-wire systems. The shunt active filter employs a
simple method for the calculation of the reference compensation current based of Fast Fourier Transform. This presented filter is able
to operate in both balanced and unbalanced load conditions. A fuzzy
logic based current controller strategy is used to regulate the filter current and hence ensure harmonic free supply current. The validity
of the presented approach in harmonic mitigation is verified via
simulation results of the proposed test system under different loading
conditions.
Abstract: This paper presents the experimental results of
leakage current waveforms which appears on porcelain insulator
surface due to existence of artificial pollutants. The tests have been
done using the chemical compounds of NaCl, Na2SiO3, H2SO4, CaO,
Na2SO4, KCl, Al2SO4, MgSO4, FeCl3, and TiO2. The insulator
surface was coated with those compounds and dried. Then, it was
tested in the chamber where the high voltage was applied. Using
correspondence analysis, the result indicated that the fundamental
harmonic of leakage current was very close to the applied voltage
and third harmonic leakage current was close to the yielded leakage
current amplitude. The first harmonic power was correlated to first
harmonic amplitude of leakage current, and third harmonic power
was close to third harmonic one. The chemical compounds of H2SO4
and Na2SiO3 affected to the power factor of around 70%. Both are the
most conductive, due to the power factor drastically increase among
the chemical compounds.
Abstract: Restarted GMRES methods augmented with approximate eigenvectors are widely used for solving large sparse linear systems. Recently a new scheme of augmenting with error approximations is proposed. The main aim of this paper is to develop a restarted GMRES method augmented with the combination of harmonic Ritz vectors and error approximations. We demonstrate that the resulted combination method can gain the advantages of two approaches: (i) effectively deflate the small eigenvalues in magnitude that may hamper the convergence of the method and (ii) partially recover the global optimality lost due to restarting. The effectiveness and efficiency of the new method are demonstrated through various numerical examples.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel sinusoidal modulation
scheme that features least correlated noise and high linearity. The
modulation circuit, which is composed of a quantizer, a resonator, and
a comparator, is capable of eliminating correlated modulation noise
while doing modulation. The proposed modulation scheme combined
with the linear quadratic optimal control is applied to a single-phase
voltage source inverter and validated with the experiment results. The
experiments show that the inverter supplies stable 60Hz 110V AC
power with a total harmonic distortion of less than 1%, under the DC
input variation from 190 V to 300 V and the output power variation
from 0 to 600 W.
Abstract: Pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques have been
the subject of intensive research for different industrial and power
sector applications. A large variety of methods, different in concept
and performance, have been newly developed and described. This
paper analyzes the comparative merits of Sinusoidal Pulse Width
Modulation (SPWM) and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation
(SVPWM) techniques and the suitability of these techniques in a
Shunt Active Filter (SAF). The objective is to select the scheme that
offers effective utilization of DC bus voltage and also harmonic
reduction at the input side. The effectiveness of the PWM techniques
is tested in the SAF configuration with a non linear load. The
performance of the SAF with the SPWM and (SVPWM) techniques
are compared with respect to the THD in source current. The study
reveals that in the context of closed loop SAF control with the
SVPWM technique there is only a minor improvement in THD. The
utilization of the DC bus with SVPWM is also not significant
compared to that with SPWM because of the non sinusoidal
modulating signal from the controller in SAF configuration.
Abstract: Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation SVPWM is
one of the most used techniques to generate sinusoidal voltage and
current due to its facility and efficiency with low harmonics
distortion. This algorithm is specially used in power electronic
applications. This paper describes simulation algorithm of SVPWM
& SPWM using MatLab/simulink environment. It also implements a
closed loop three phases DC-AC converter controlling its outputs
voltages amplitude and frequency using MatLab. Also comparison
between SVPWM & SPWM results is given.
Abstract: The presence of harmonic in power system is a major
concerned to power engineers for many years. With the increasing
usage of nonlinear loads in power systems, the harmonic pollution
becomes more serious. One of the widely used computation
algorithm for harmonic analysis is fast Fourier transform (FFT). In
this paper, a harmonic analyzer using FFT was implemented on
TMS320C6713 DSK. The supply voltage of 240 V 59 Hz is stepped
down to 5V using a voltage divider in order to match the power
rating of the DSK input. The output from the DSK was displayed on
oscilloscope and Code Composer Studio™ software. This work has
demonstrated the possibility of analyzing the 240V power supply
harmonic content using the DSK board.
Abstract: In the present paper, disc loaded interaction structure
for potential application in wideband Gyro-TWT amplifier has been
analyzed, taking all the space and modal harmonics into
consideration, for the eigenwave solutions. The analysis has been
restricted to azimuthally symmetric TE0,n mode. Dispersion
characteristics have been plotted by varying the structure parameters
and have been validated against HFSS simulation results. The
variation of eigenvalue with respect to different structure parameters
has also been presented. It has been observed that disc periodicity
plays very important role for wideband operation of disc-loaded
Gyro-TWT.
Abstract: A 10bit, 40 MSps, sample and hold, implemented in 0.18-μm CMOS technology with 3.3V supply, is presented for application in the front-end stage of an analog-to-digital converter. Topology selection, biasing, compensation and common mode feedback are discussed. Cascode technique has been used to increase the dc gain. The proposed opamp provides 149MHz unity-gain bandwidth (wu), 80 degree phase margin and a differential peak to peak output swing more than 2.5v. The circuit has 55db Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), using the improved fully differential two stage operational amplifier of 91.7dB gain. The power dissipation of the designed sample and hold is 4.7mw. The designed system demonstrates relatively suitable response in different process, temperature and supply corners (PVT corners).
Abstract: As wind, solar and other clean and green energy
sources gain popularity worldwide, engineers are seeking ways to
make renewable energy systems more affordable and to integrate
them with existing ac power grids. In the present paper an attempt
has been made for integrating the PV arrays to the smart nano grid
using an artificial intelligent (AI) based solar powered cascade multilevel
inverter. The AI based controller switching scheme has been
used for improving the power quality by reducing the Total Harmonic
Distortion (THD) of the multi-level inverter output voltage.
Abstract: This paper presents the results of a comprehensive
investigation of five blackouts that occurred on 28 August to 8
September 2011 due to bushing failures of the 132/33 kV, 125 MVA
transformers at JBB Ali Grid station. The investigation aims to
explore the root causes of the bushing failures and come up with
recommendations that help in rectifying the problem and avoiding the
reoccurrence of similar type of incidents. The incident reports about
the failed bushings and the SCADA reports at this grid station were
examined and analyzed. Moreover, comprehensive power quality
field measurements at ten 33/11 kV substations (S/Ss) in JBB Ali
area were conducted, and frequency scans were performed to verify
any harmonic resonance frequencies due to power factor correction
capacitors. Furthermore, the daily operations of the on-load tap
changers (OLTCs) of both the 125 MVA and 20 MVA transformers
at JBB Ali Grid station have been analyzed. The investigation
showed that the five bushing failures were due to a local problem, i.e.
internal degradation of the bushing insulation. This has been
confirmed by analyzing the time interval between successive OLTC
operations of the faulty grid transformers. It was also found that
monitoring the number of OLTC operations can help in predicting
bushing failure.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose the Modified Synchronous Detection (MSD) Method for determining the reference compensating currents of the shunt active power filter under non sinusoidal voltages conditions. For controlling the inverter switching we used the PI regulator. The numerical simulation results, using Power System Blockset Toolbox PSB of Matlab, from a complete structure, are presented and discussed.
Abstract: In recent years the large scale use of the power electronic equipment has led to an increase of harmonics in the power system. The harmonics results into a poor power quality and have great adverse economical impact on the utilities and customers. Current harmonics are one of the most common power quality problems and are usually resolved by using shunt active filter (SHAF). The main objective of this work is to develop PI and Fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) to analyze the performance of Shunt Active Filter for mitigating current harmonics under balanced and unbalanced sinusoidal source voltage conditions for normal load and increased load. When the supply voltages are ideal (balanced), both PI and FLC are converging to the same compensation characteristics. However, the supply voltages are non-ideal (unbalanced), FLC offers outstanding results. Simulation results validate the superiority of FLC with triangular membership function over the PI controller.
Abstract: In this paper the vibration behaviors of a structure equipped with a tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) under a harmonic type of earthquake loading are studied. However, due to inherent nonlinear liquid damping, it is no doubt that a great deal of computational effort is required to search the optimum parameters of the TLCD, numerically. Therefore by linearization the equation of motion of the single degree of freedom structure equipped with the TLCD, the closed form solutions of the TLCD-structure system are derived. To find the reliability of the analytical method, the results have been compared with other researcher and have good agreement. Further, the effects of optimal design parameters such as length ratio and mass ratio on the performance of the TLCD for controlling the responses of a structure are investigated by using the harmonic type of earthquake excitation. Finally, the Citicorp Center which has a very flexible structure is used as an example to illustrate the design procedure for the TLCD under the earthquake excitation.
Abstract: In this paper, we consider a designed and
implemented phase-cutting dimmer. In fact, the dimmer is closed
loop and a microcontroller calculates and then regulates the firing
delay angles of each channel. Depending on the firing angle, the
harmonic distortion in the input current will not comply with
international standards, such as IEC 61000-3-2 (class C equipments).
For solving this problem, eight harmonic compensators have been
added to the dimmer. So, the proposed dimmer has a little harmonic
distortion in the input current whereas conventional phase-cutting
dimmers are not so. Sensitivity and removed THD of the proposed
dimmer will be presented.
Abstract: The mixing of pollutions and sediments in near shore regions of natural water bodies depends heavily on the characteristics such as the strength and frequency of flow instability. In the present paper, the instability of natural convection induced by absorption of solar radiation in littoral regions is considered. Spectral analysis is conducted on the quasi-steady state flow to reveal the power and frequency modes of the instability at various positions. Results indicate that the power of instability, the number of frequency modes, the prominence of higher frequency modes, and the highest frequency mode increase with the offshore distance and/or Rayleigh number. Harmonic modes are present at relatively low Rayleigh numbers. For a given offshore distance, the position with the strongest power of instability is located adjacent to the sloping bottom while the frequency modes are the same over the local depth. As the Rayleigh number increases, the unstable region extends toward the shore.
Abstract: Previously, harmonic parameters (HPs) have been
selected as features extracted from EEG signals for automatic sleep
scoring. However, in previous studies, only one HP parameter was
used, which were directly extracted from the whole epoch of EEG
signal.
In this study, two different transformations were applied to extract
HPs from EEG signals: Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) and wavelet
transform (WT). EEG signals are decomposed by the two
transformations; and features were extracted from different
components. Twelve parameters (four sets of HPs) were extracted.
Some of the parameters are highly diverse among different stages.
Afterward, HPs from two transformations were used to building a
rough sleep stages scoring model using the classifier SVM. The
performance of this model is about 78% using the features obtained by
our proposed extractions. Our results suggest that these features may
be useful for automatic sleep stages scoring.
