Abstract: This paper considers the influence of promotion
instruments for renewable energy sources (RES) on a multi-energy
modeling framework. In Europe, so called Feed-in Tariffs are
successfully used as incentive structures to increase the amount of
energy produced by RES. Because of the stochastic nature of large
scale integration of distributed generation, many problems have
occurred regarding the quality and stability of supply. Hence, a
macroscopic model was developed in order to optimize the power
supply of the local energy infrastructure, which includes electricity,
natural gas, fuel oil and district heating as energy carriers. Unique
features of the model are the integration of RES and the adoption of
Feed-in Tariffs into one optimization stage. Sensitivity studies are
carried out to examine the system behavior under changing profits
for the feed-in of RES. With a setup of three energy exchanging
regions and a multi-period optimization, the impact of costs and
profits are determined.
Abstract: Electric vehicles are considered as technology which
can significantly reduce the problems related to road transport such
as increasing GHG emissions, air pollutions and energy import
dependency.
The core objective of this paper is to analyze the current energetic,
ecological and economic characteristics of different types of electric
vehicles.
The major conclusions of this analysis are: The high investments
cost are the major barrier for broad market breakthrough of battery
electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles. For battery electric vehicles
also the limited driving range states a key obstacle. The analyzed
hybrids could in principle serve as a bridging technology. However,
due to their tank-to-wheel emissions they cannot state a proper
solution for urban areas.
Finally, the most important perception is that also battery electric
vehicles and fuel cell vehicles are environmentally benign solution if
the primary fuel source is renewable.
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to reduce the amount of incomplete coating of stainless steel washers in the electrodeposition painting process by using an experimental design technique. The surface preparation was found to be a major cause of painted surface quality. The influence of pretreating and painting process parameters, which are cleaning time, chemical concentration and shape of hanger were studied. A 23 factorial design with two replications was performed. The analysis of variance for the designed experiment showed the great influence of cleaning time and shape of hanger. From this study, optimized cleaning time was determined and a newly designed electrical conductive hanger was proved to be superior to the original one. The experimental verification results showed that the amount of incomplete coating defects decreased from 4% to 1.02% and operation cost decreased by 10.5%.
Abstract: Advancements in the field of artificial intelligence
(AI) made during this decade have forever changed the way we look
at automating spacecraft subsystems including the electrical power
system. AI have been used to solve complicated practical problems
in various areas and are becoming more and more popular nowadays.
In this paper, a mathematical modeling and MATLAB–SIMULINK
model for the different components of the spacecraft power system is
presented. Also, a control system, which includes either the Neural
Network Controller (NNC) or the Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is
developed for achieving the coordination between the components of
spacecraft power system as well as control the energy flows. The
performance of the spacecraft power system is evaluated by
comparing two control systems using the NNC and the FLC.
Abstract: In the past decade, the development of microstrip
sensor application has evolved tremendously. Although cut and trial
method was adopted to develop microstrip sensing applications in the
past, Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) is a more effective as it ensures
less time is consumed and cost saving is achieved in developing
microstrip sensing applications. Therefore microstrip sensing
applications has gained popularity as an effective tool adopted in
continuous sensing of moisture content particularly in products that is
administered mainly by liquid content. In this research, the Cole-Cole
representation of reactive relaxation is applied to assess the
performance of the microstrip sensor devices. The microstrip sensor
application is an effective tool suitable for sensing the moisture
content of dielectric material. Analogous to dielectric relaxation
consideration of Cole-Cole diagrams as applied to dielectric
materials, a “reactive relaxation concept” concept is introduced to
represent the frequency-dependent and moisture content
characteristics of microstrip sensor devices.
Abstract: Solar Cells are destined to supply electric energy beginning from primary resources. It can charge a battery up to 12V dc. For residential use an inverter for 12V dc to 220Vac conversion is desired. For this a static DC-AC converter is necessarily inserted between the solar cells and the distribution network. This paper describes a new P.W.M. strategy for a voltage source inverter. This modulation strategy reduces the energy losses and harmonics in the P.W.M. voltage source inverter. This technique allows the P.W.M. voltage source inverter to become a new feasible solution for solar home application.
Abstract: This study reports the preparation of soft magnetic ribbons of Fe-based amorphous alloys using the single-roller melt-spinning technique. Ribbon width varied from 142 mm to 213 mm and, with a thickness of approximately 22 μm 2 μm. The microstructure and magnetic properties of the ribbons were characterized by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and electrical resistivity measurements (ERM). The amorphous material properties dependence of the cooling rate and nozzle pressure have uneven surface in ribbon thicknesses are investigated. Magnetic measurement results indicate that some region of the ribbon exhibits good magnetic properties, higher saturation induction and lower coercivity. However, due to the uneven surface of 213 mm wide ribbon, the magnetic responses are not uniformly distributed. To understand the transformer magnetic performances, this study analyzes the measurements of a three-phase 2 MVA amorphous-cored transformer. Experimental results confirm that the transformer with a ribbon width of 142 mm has better magnetic properties in terms of lower core loss, exciting power, and audible noise.
Abstract: In nature, electromagnetic fields always appear like
atmosphere static electric field, the earth's static magnetic field and
the wide-rang frequency electromagnetic field caused by lightening.
However, besides natural electromagnetic fields (EMF), today human
beings are mostly exposed to artificial electromagnetic fields due to
technology progress and outspread use of electrical devices. To
evaluate nuisance of EMF, it is necessary to know field intensity for
every frequency which appears and compare it with allowed values.
Low frequency EMF-s around transmission and distribution lines are
time-varying quasi-static electromagnetic fields which have
conservative component of low frequency electrical field caused by
charges and eddy component of low frequency magnetic field caused
by currents. Displacement current or field delay are negligible, so
energy flow in quasi-static EMF involves diffusion, analog like heat
transfer. Electrical and magnetic field can be analyzed separately.
This paper analysis the numerical calculations in ELF-400 software
of EMF in distribution substation in shopping center. Analyzing the
results it is possible to specify locations exposed to the fields and
give useful suggestion to eliminate electromagnetic effect or reduce it
on acceptable level within the non-ionizing radiation norms and
norms of protection from EMF.
Abstract: Losses reduction initiatives in distribution systems
have been activated due to the increasing cost of supplying
electricity, the shortage in fuel with ever-increasing cost to produce
more power, and the global warming concerns. These initiatives have
been introduced to the utilities in shape of incentives and penalties.
Recently, the electricity distribution companies in Oman have been
incentivized to reduce the distribution technical and non-technical
losses with an equal annual reduction rate for 6 years. In this paper,
different techniques for losses reduction in Mazoon Electricity
Company (MZEC) are addressed. In this company, high numbers of
substation and feeders were found to be non-compliant with the
Distribution System Security Standard (DSSS). Therefore, 33
projects have been suggested to bring non-complying 29 substations
and 28 feeders to meet the planed criteria and to comply with the
DSSS. The largest part of MZEC-s network (South Batinah region)
was modeled by ETAP software package. The model has been
extended to implement the proposed projects and to examine their
effects on losses reduction. Simulation results have shown that the
implementation of these projects leads to a significant improvement
in voltage profile, and reduction in the active and the reactive power
losses. Finally, the economical analysis has revealed that the
implementation of the proposed projects in MZEC leads to an annual
saving of about US$ 5 million.
Abstract: This paper presents an approach for daily optimal operation of distribution networks considering Distributed Generators (DGs). Due to private ownership of DGs, a cost based compensation method is used to encourage DGs in active and reactive power generation. The objective function is summation of electrical energy generated by DGs and substation bus (main bus) in the next day. A genetic algorithm is used to solve the optimal operation problem. The approach is tested on an IEEE34 buses distribution feeder.
Abstract: An aqueous methanol sensor for use in direct
methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) applications is demonstrated; the
methanol sensor is built using dispersed single-walled carbon
nanotubes (SWCNTs) with Nafion117 solution to detect the methanol
concentration in water. The study is aimed at the potential use of the
carbon nanotubes array as a methanol sensor for direct methanol fuel
cells (DMFCs). The concentration of methanol in the fuel circulation
loop of a DMFC system is an important operating parameter, because
it determines the electrical performance and efficiency of the fuel cell
system. The sensor is also operative even at ambient temperatures
and responds quickly to changes in the concentration levels of the
methanol. Such a sensor can be easily incorporated into the methanol
fuel solution flow loop in the DMFC system.
Abstract: Simultaneous recovery of copper and DCA from
simulated MEUF concentrated stream was investigated. Effects of
surfactant (DCA) and metal (copper) concentrations, surfactant to
metal molar ratio (S/M ratio), electroplating voltage, EDTA
concentration, solution pH, and salt concentration on metal recovery
and current efficiency were studied. Electric voltage of -0.5 V was
shown to be optimum operation condition in terms of Cu recovery,
current efficiency, and surfactant recovery. Increasing Cu recovery and
current efficiency were observed with increases of Cu concentration
while keeping concentration of DCA constant. However, increasing
both Cu and DCA concentration while keeping S/M ratio constant at
2.5 showed detrimental effect on Cu recovery at DCA concentration
higher than 15 mM. Cu recovery decreases with increasing pH while
current efficiency showed an opposite trend. It is believed that
conductivity is the main cause for discrepancy of Cu recovery and
current efficiency observed at different pH. Finally, it was shown that
EDTA had adverse effect on both Cu recovery and current efficiency
while addition of NaCl salt had negative impact on current efficiency
at concentration higher than 8000 mg/L.
Abstract: Hydrogen is an important chemical in many industries
and it is expected to become one of the major fuels for energy
generation in the future. Unfortunately, hydrogen does not exist in its
elemental form in nature and therefore has to be produced from
hydrocarbons, hydrogen-containing compounds or water.
Above its critical point (374.8oC and 22.1MPa), water has lower
density and viscosity, and a higher heat capacity than those of
ambient water. Mass transfer in supercritical water (SCW) is
enhanced due to its increased diffusivity and transport ability. The
reduced dielectric constant makes supercritical water a better solvent
for organic compounds and gases. Hence, due to the aforementioned
desirable properties, there is a growing interest toward studies
regarding the gasification of organic matter containing biomass or
model biomass solutions in supercritical water.
In this study, hydrogen and biofuel production by the catalytic
gasification of 2-Propanol in supercritical conditions of water was
investigated. Pt/Al2O3and Ni/Al2O3were the catalysts used in the
gasification reactions. All of the experiments were performed under a
constant pressure of 25MPa. The effects of five reaction temperatures
(400, 450, 500, 550 and 600°C) and five reaction times (10, 15, 20,
25 and 30 s) on the gasification yield and flammable component
content were investigated.
Abstract: In this paper, investigation of subsynchronous
resonance (SSR) characteristics of a hybrid series compensated
system and the design of voltage controller for three level 24-pulse
Voltage Source Converter based Static Synchronous Series
Compensator (SSSC) is presented. Hybrid compensation consists of
series fixed capacitor and SSSC which is a active series FACTS
controller. The design of voltage controller for SSSC is based on
damping torque analysis, and Genetic Algorithm (GA) is adopted for
tuning the controller parameters. The SSR Characteristics of SSSC
with constant reactive voltage control modes has been investigated.
The results show that the constant reactive voltage control of SSSC
has the effect of reducing the electrical resonance frequency, which
detunes the SSR.The analysis of SSR with SSSC is carried out based
on frequency domain method, eigenvalue analysis and transient
simulation. While the eigenvalue and damping torque analysis are
based on D-Q model of SSSC, the transient simulation considers both
D-Q and detailed three phase nonlinear system model using
switching functions.
Abstract: With the development of the Polyvinyl chloride
(PVC) products in many applications, the challenge of investigating
the raw material composition and reducing the cost have both
become more and more important. Considerable research has been
done investigating the effect of additives on the PVC products. Most
of the PVC composites research investigates only the effect of
single/few factors, at a time. This isolated consideration of the input
factors does not take in consideration the interaction effect of the
different factors. This paper implements a mixture experimental
design approach to find out a cost-effective PVC composition for the
production of electrical-insulation cables considering the ASTM
Designation (D) 6096. The results analysis showed that a minimum
cost can be achieved through using 20% virgin PVC, 18.75%
recycled PVC, 43.75% CaCO3 with participle size 10 microns, 14%
DOP plasticizer, and 3.5% CPW plasticizer. For maximum UTS the
compound should consist of: 17.5% DOP, 62.5% virgin PVC, and
20.0% CaCO3 of particle size 5 microns. Finally, for the highest
ductility the compound should be made of 35% virgin PVC, 20%
CaCO3 of particle size 5 microns, and 45.0% DOP plasticizer.
Abstract: High-voltage power transmission lines are the back
bone of electrical power utilities. The stability and continuous
monitoring of this critical infrastructure is pivotal. Nine-Sigma
representing Eskom Holding SOC limited, South Africa has a major
problem on proactive detection of fallen power lines and real time
sagging measurement together with slipping of such conductors. The
main objective of this research is to innovate RFID technology to
solve this challenge. Various options and technologies such as GPS,
PLC, image processing, MR sensors and etc., have been reviewed
and draw backs were made. The potential of RFID to give precision
measurement will be observed and presented. The future research
will look at magnetic and electrical interference as well as corona
effect on the technology.
Abstract: The scope of this paper is to describe a real electrical
installation of renewable energy using photovoltaic cells. The
displayed power grid connected network was established in 2007 at
area of Northern Greece. The photovoltaic park is composed of 6120
photovoltaic cells able to deliver a total power of 1.101.600 Wp. For
the transformation of DC voltage to AC voltage have been used 25
stand alone three phases inverters and for the connection at the
medium voltage network of Greek Power Authority have been
installed two oil immersed transformer of 630 kVA each one. Due to
the wide space area of installation a specific external lightning
protection system has been designed. Additionally, due to the
sensitive electronics of the control and protection systems of park,
surge protection, equipotent bonding and shielding were also of
major importance.
Abstract: The present work deals with the calculation of
transport properties of Hg0.8Cd0.2Te (MCT) semiconductor in
degenerate case. Due to their energy-band structure, this material
becomes degenerate at moderate doping densities, which are around
1015 cm-3, so that the usual Maxwell-Boltzmann approximation is
inaccurate in the determination of transport parameters. This problem
is faced by using Fermi-Dirac (F-D) statistics, and the non-parabolic
behavior of the bands may be approximated by the Kane model. The
Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is used here to determinate transport
parameters: drift velocity, mean energy and drift mobility versus
electric field and the doped densities. The obtained results are in
good agreement with those extracted from literature.
Abstract: In this experiment, we investigated the performance of
two types of heat sink, swaged- and extruded-type, used in the inverter
of industrial electricity generator. The swaged-type heat sink has 62
fins, and the extruded-type has 38 fins having the same dimension as
that of the swaged-type. But the extruded-type heat sink maintains the
same heat transfer area by the laterally waved surface which has 1 mm
in radius. As a result, the swaged- and extruded-type heat sinks
released 71% and 64% of the heat incoming to the heat sink,
respectively. The other incoming heat were naturally convected and
radiated to the ambient. In spite of 40% decrease in number of fins, the
heat release performance of the extruded-type heat sink was lowered
only 7% than that of the swaged-type. We believe that, this shows the
increment of effective heat transfer area by the laterally waved surface
of fins and the better heat transfer property of the extruded-type heat
sink.
Abstract: The performance of mortar subjected to high
temperature and cooled in normal ambient temperature was examined
in the laboratory to comply with the situation of burning & cooling of
a structure. Four series of cubical (5 X 5 X 5 cm) mortar specimens
were made from OPC, and partial replacement (10, 15, 20, 25 &
30%) of OPC by Rice Husk Ash (RHA) produced in the uncontrolled
environment. These specimens were heated in electric furnace to 200,
300, 400, 500 and 7000C. The specimens were kept in normal room
temperature for cooling. They were then tested for mechanical
properties and the results shows that particular 20% RHA mixed
mortar shows better fire performance.
