Abstract: To reveal the temperature field distribution of disc
brake in downward belt conveyor, mathematical models of heat
transfer for disc brake were established combined with heat transfer
theory. Then, the simulation process was stated in detail and the
temperature field of disc brake under conditions of dynamic speed and
dynamic braking torque was numerically simulated by using ANSYS
software. Finally the distribution and variation laws of temperature
field in the braking process were analyzed. Results indicate that the
maximum surface temperature occurs at a time before the brake end
and there exist large temperature gradients in both radial and axial
directions, while it is relatively small in the circumferential direction.
Abstract: How to simulate experimentally the air flow and heat
transfer under microgravity on the ground is important, which has not
been completely solved so far. Influence of gravity on air natural
convection results in convection heat transfer on ground difference
from that on orbit. In order to obtain air temperature and velocity
deviations of manned spacecraft during terrestrial thermal test,
dimensionless number analysis and numerical simulation analysis are
performed. The calculated temperature distribution and velocity
distribution of the horizontal test cases are compared to the vertical
cases. The results show that the influence of gravity is neglected for
facility drawer racks and more obvious for vertical cabins.
Abstract: Natural convection heat transfer from a heated
horizontal semi-circular cylinder (flat surface upward) has been
investigated for the following ranges of conditions; Grashof number,
and Prandtl number. The governing partial differential equations
(continuity, Navier-Stokes and energy equations) have been solved
numerically using a finite volume formulation. In addition, the role of
the type of the thermal boundary condition imposed at cylinder
surface, namely, constant wall temperature (CWT) and constant heat
flux (CHF) are explored. Natural convection heat transfer from a
heated horizontal semi-circular cylinder (flat surface upward) has
been investigated for the following ranges of conditions; Grashof
number, and Prandtl number, . The governing partial differential
equations (continuity, Navier-Stokes and energy equations) have
been solved numerically using a finite volume formulation. In
addition, the role of the type of the thermal boundary condition
imposed at cylinder surface, namely, constant wall temperature
(CWT) and constant heat flux (CHF) are explored. The resulting flow
and temperature fields are visualized in terms of the streamline and
isotherm patterns in the proximity of the cylinder. The flow remains
attached to the cylinder surface over the range of conditions spanned
here except that for and ; at these conditions, a separated flow
region is observed when the condition of the constant wall
temperature is prescribed on the surface of the cylinder. The heat
transfer characteristics are analyzed in terms of the local and average
Nusselt numbers. The maximum value of the local Nusselt number
always occurs at the corner points whereas it is found to be minimum
at the rear stagnation point on the flat surface. Overall, the average
Nusselt number increases with Grashof number and/ or Prandtl
number in accordance with the scaling considerations. The numerical
results are used to develop simple correlations as functions of
Grashof and Prandtl number thereby enabling the interpolation of the
present numerical results for the intermediate values of the Prandtl or
Grashof numbers for both thermal boundary conditions.
Abstract: A numerical investigation of surface heat transfer
characteristics of turbulent air flows in different parallel plate
grooved channels is performed using CFD code. The results are
obtained for Reynolds number ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 and for
arc-shaped and rectangular grooved channels. The influence of
different geometric parameters of dimples as well as the number of
them and the geometric and thermophysical properties of channel
walls are studied. It is found that there exists an optimum value for
depth of dimples in which the largest wall heat flux can be achieved.
Also, the results show a critical value for the ratio of wall thermal
conductivity to the one of fluid in which the dependence of wall heat
flux to this ratio almost vanishes. In most cases examined, heat
transfer enhancement is larger for arc-shaped grooved channels than
rectangular ones.
Abstract: Spray chilling using air-mist nozzles has received
much attention in the food processing industry because of the
benefits it has shown over forced air convection. These benefits
include an increase in the heat transfer coefficient and a reduction in
the water loss by the product during cooling. However, few studies
have simulated the heat transfer and aerodynamics phenomena of the
air-mist chilling process for optimal operating conditions. The study
provides insight into the optimal conditions for spray impaction, heat
transfer efficiency and control of surface flooding. A computational
fluid dynamics model using a two-phase flow composed of water
droplets injected with air is developed to simulate the air-mist
chilling of food products. The model takes into consideration
droplet-to-surface interaction, water-film accumulation and surface
runoff. The results of this study lead to a better understanding of the
heat transfer enhancement, water conservation, and to a clear
direction for the optimal design of air-mist chilling systems that can
be used in commercial applications in the food and meat processing
industries.
Abstract: A numerical study on the turbulent flow and heat
transfer characteristics in the rectangular channel with different types
of baffles is carried out. The inclined baffles have the width of 19.8
cm, the square diamond type hole having one side length of 2.55 cm,
and the inclination angle of 5o. Reynolds number is varied between
23,000 and 57,000. The SST turbulence model is applied in the
calculation. The validity of the numerical results is examined by the
experimental data. The numerical results of the flow field depict that
the flow patterns around the different baffle type are entirely different
and these significantly affect the local heat transfer characteristics.
The heat transfer and friction factor characteristics are significantly
affected by the perforation density of the baffle plate. It is found that
the heat transfer enhancement of baffle type II (3 hole baffle) has the
best values.
Abstract: This paper examines the forced convection flow of
incompressible, electrically conducting viscous fluid past a sharp
wedge in the presence of heat generation or absorption with an
applied magnetic field. The system of partial differential equations
governing Falkner - Skan wedge flow and heat transfer is first
transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using
similarity transformations which is later solved using an implicit
finite - difference scheme, along with quasilinearization technique.
Numerical computations are performed for air (Pr = 0.7) and
displayed graphically to illustrate the influence of pertinent physical
parameters on local skin friction and heat transfer coefficients and,
also on, velocity and temperature fields. It is observed that the
magnetic field increases both the coefficients of skin friction and heat
transfer. The effect of heat generation or absorption is found to be
very significant on heat transfer, but its effect on the skin friction is
negligible. Indeed, the occurrence of overshoot is noticed in the
temperature profiles during heat generation process, causing the
reversal in the direction of heat transfer.
Abstract: Heat transfer from two cam shape cylinder in side-byside
arrangement had been studied numerically.
The transverse gap between the centers of cylinders (T) is allowed
to vary to change the pitch ratio (T/Deq). The equivalent diameter of
the cylinder (Deq) is 27.6 mm and pitch ratio varies in range of
1≤T/Deq≤3. The Reynolds numbers based on equivalent circular
cylinder are within 50≤ Reeq≤150. Results show that Nusselt number
of cylinders increases about 1 to 36 percent when pitch ratio
increases from 1 to 3.
Abstract: The paper provides a numerical investigation of the
entropy generation analysis due to natural convection in an inclined
square porous cavity. The coupled equations of mass, momentum,
energy and species conservation are solved using the Control Volume
Finite-Element Method. Effect of medium permeability and
inclination angle on entropy generation is analysed. It was found that
according to the Darcy number and the porous thermal Raleigh
number values, the entropy generation could be mainly due to heat
transfer or to fluid friction irreversibility and that entropy generation
reaches extremum values for specific inclination angles.
Abstract: This paper presents a numerical study on surface heat
transfer characteristics of laminar air flows in parallel-plate dimpled
channels. The two-dimensional numerical model is provided by
commercial code FLUENT and the results are obtained for channels
with symmetrically opposing hemi-cylindrical cavities onto both
walls for Reynolds number ranging from 1000 to 2500. The influence
of variations in relative depth of dimples (the ratio of cavity depth to
the cavity curvature diameter), the number of them and the thermophysical
properties of channel walls on heat transfer enhancement is
studied. The results are evident for existence of an optimum value for
the relative depth of dimples in which the largest wall heat flux and
average Nusselt number can be achieved. In addition, the results of
conjugation simulation indicate that the overall influence of the ratio
of wall thermal conductivity to the one of the fluid on heat transfer
rate is not much significant and can be ignored.
Abstract: Addition of milli or micro sized particles to the heat
transfer fluid is one of the many techniques employed for improving
heat transfer rate. Though this looks simple, this method has
practical problems such as high pressure loss, clogging and erosion
of the material of construction. These problems can be overcome by
using nanofluids, which is a dispersion of nanosized particles in a
base fluid. Nanoparticles increase the thermal conductivity of the
base fluid manifold which in turn increases the heat transfer rate.
Nanoparticles also increase the viscosity of the basefluid resulting in
higher pressure drop for the nanofluid compared to the base fluid. So
it is imperative that the Reynolds number (Re) and the volume
fraction have to be optimum for better thermal hydraulic
effectiveness. In this work, the heat transfer enhancement using
aluminium oxide nanofluid using low and high volume fraction
nanofluids in turbulent pipe flow with constant wall temperature has
been studied by computational fluid dynamic modeling of the
nanofluid flow adopting the single phase approach. Nanofluid, up till
a volume fraction of 1% is found to be an effective heat transfer
enhancement technique. The Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor
predictions for the low volume fractions (i.e. 0.02%, 0.1 and 0.5%)
agree very well with the experimental values of Sundar and Sharma
(2010). While, predictions for the high volume fraction nanofluids
(i.e. 1%, 4% and 6%) are found to have reasonable agreement with
both experimental and numerical results available in the literature.
So the computationally inexpensive single phase approach can be
used for heat transfer and pressure drop prediction of new nanofluids.
Abstract: In this study, a 3D combustion chamber was simulated
using FLUENT 6.32. Aims to obtain accurate information about the
profile of the combustion in the furnace and also check the effect of
oxygen enrichment on the combustion process. Oxygen enrichment is
an effective way to reduce combustion pollutant. The flow rate of air
to fuel ratio is varied as 1.3, 3.2 and 5.1 and the oxygen enriched
flow rates are 28, 54 and 68 lit/min. Combustion simulations
typically involve the solution of the turbulent flows with heat
transfer, species transport and chemical reactions. It is common to
use the Reynolds-averaged form of the governing equation in
conjunction with a suitable turbulence model. The 3D Reynolds
Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations with standard k-ε
turbulence model are solved together by Fluent 6.3 software. First
order upwind scheme is used to model governing equations and the
SIMPLE algorithm is used as pressure velocity coupling. Species
mass fractions at the wall are assumed to have zero normal
gradients.Results show that minimum mole fraction of CO2 happens
when the flow rate ratio of air to fuel is 5.1. Additionally, in a fixed
oxygen enrichment condition, increasing the air to fuel ratio will
increase the temperature peak. As a result, oxygen-enrichment can
reduce the CO2 emission at this kind of furnace in high air to fuel
rates.
Abstract: In order to improve the simulation effects of space cold
black environment, this paper described a rectangular channel plate
heat sink. By using fluid mechanics theory and finite element method,
the internal fluid flow and heat transfer in heat sink was numerically
simulated to analyze the impact of channel structural on fluid flow and
heat transfer. The result showed that heat sink temperature uniformity
is well, and the impact of channel structural on the heat sink
temperature uniformity is not significant. The channel depth and
spacing are important factors which affect the fluid flow and heat
transfer in the heat sink. The two factors of heat transfer and resistance
need to be considered comprehensively to determine the optimal flow
structure parameters.
Abstract: Numerical simulations are performed for laminar
continuous and pulsed jets impinging on a surface in order to
investigate the effects of pulsing frequency on the heat transfer
characteristics. The time-averaged Nusselt number of pulsed jets is
larger in the impinging jet region as compared to the continuous jet,
while it is smaller in the outer wall jet region. At the stagnation point,
the mean and RMS Nusselt numbers become larger and smaller,
respectively, as the pulsing frequency increases. Unsteady behaviors
of vortical fluid motions and temperature field are also investigated to
understand the underlying mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement.
Abstract: Impinging jets are widely used in industrial cooling
systems for their high heat transfer characteristics at stagnation points.
However, the heat transfer characteristics are low in the downstream
direction. In order to improve the heat transfer coefficient further
downstream, investigations introducing ribs on jet-cooled flat plates
have been conducted. Most studies regarding the heat-transfer
enhancement using a rib-roughened wall have dealt with the rib pitch.
In this paper, we focused on the rib spacing and demonstrated that the
rib spacing must be more than 6 times the nozzle width to improve heat
transfer at Reynolds number Re=5.0×103 because it is necessary to
have enough space to allow reattachment of flow behind the first rib.
Abstract: In the present work an investigation of the effects of
the air frontal velocity, relative humidity and dry air temperature on
the heat transfer characteristics of plain finned tube evaporator has
been conducted. Using an appropriate correlation for the air side heat
transfer coefficient the temperature distribution along the fin surface
was calculated using a dimensionless temperature distribution. For a
constant relative humidity and bulb temperature, it is found that the
temperature distribution decreases with increasing air frontal
velocity. Apparently, it is attributed to the condensate water film
flowing over the fin surface. When dry air temperature and face
velocity are being kept constant, the temperature distribution
decreases with the increase of inlet relative humidity. An increase in
the inlet relative humidity is accompanied by a higher amount of
moisture on the fin surface. This results in a higher amount of latent
heat transfer which involves higher fin surface temperature. For the
influence of dry air temperature, the results here show an increase in
the dimensionless temperature parameter with a decrease in bulb
temperature. Increasing bulb temperature leads to higher amount of
sensible and latent heat transfer when other conditions remain
constant.
Abstract: In this work, we experimentally study heat transfer
from exhaust particulate air of detergent spray drying tower to water
by using coiled tube heat exchanger. Water flows in the coiled
tubes, where air loaded with detergent particles of 43 micrometers
in diameter flows within the shell. Four coiled tubes with different
coil pitches are used in a counter-current flow configuration. We
investigate heat transfer coefficients of inside and outside the heat
transfer surfaces through 400 experiments. The correlations between
Nusselt number and Reynolds number, Prandtl number, mass flow
rate of particulates to mass flow rate of air ratio and coiled tube
pitch parameter are proposed. The correlations procured can be used
to predicted heat transfer between tube and shell of the heat
exchanger.
Abstract: In nature, electromagnetic fields always appear like
atmosphere static electric field, the earth's static magnetic field and
the wide-rang frequency electromagnetic field caused by lightening.
However, besides natural electromagnetic fields (EMF), today human
beings are mostly exposed to artificial electromagnetic fields due to
technology progress and outspread use of electrical devices. To
evaluate nuisance of EMF, it is necessary to know field intensity for
every frequency which appears and compare it with allowed values.
Low frequency EMF-s around transmission and distribution lines are
time-varying quasi-static electromagnetic fields which have
conservative component of low frequency electrical field caused by
charges and eddy component of low frequency magnetic field caused
by currents. Displacement current or field delay are negligible, so
energy flow in quasi-static EMF involves diffusion, analog like heat
transfer. Electrical and magnetic field can be analyzed separately.
This paper analysis the numerical calculations in ELF-400 software
of EMF in distribution substation in shopping center. Analyzing the
results it is possible to specify locations exposed to the fields and
give useful suggestion to eliminate electromagnetic effect or reduce it
on acceptable level within the non-ionizing radiation norms and
norms of protection from EMF.
Abstract: In this experiment, we investigated the performance of
two types of heat sink, swaged- and extruded-type, used in the inverter
of industrial electricity generator. The swaged-type heat sink has 62
fins, and the extruded-type has 38 fins having the same dimension as
that of the swaged-type. But the extruded-type heat sink maintains the
same heat transfer area by the laterally waved surface which has 1 mm
in radius. As a result, the swaged- and extruded-type heat sinks
released 71% and 64% of the heat incoming to the heat sink,
respectively. The other incoming heat were naturally convected and
radiated to the ambient. In spite of 40% decrease in number of fins, the
heat release performance of the extruded-type heat sink was lowered
only 7% than that of the swaged-type. We believe that, this shows the
increment of effective heat transfer area by the laterally waved surface
of fins and the better heat transfer property of the extruded-type heat
sink.
Abstract: Thermal water hammer is a special type of water
hammer which rarely occurs in heat exchangers. In biphasic fluids, if
steam bubbles are surrounded by condensate, regarding lower
condensate temperature than steam, they will suddenly collapse. As a
result, the vacuum caused by an extreme change in volume lead to
movement of the condensates in all directions and their collision the
force produced by this collision leads to a severe stress in the pipe
wall. This phenomenon is a special type of water hammer. According
to fluid mechanics, this phenomenon is a particular type of transient
flows during which abrupt change of fluid leads to sudden pressure
change inside the tube. In this paper, the mechanism of abrupt failure
of 80 tubes of 481 tubes of a methanol heat exchanger is discussed.
Initially, due to excessive temperature differences between heat
transfer fluids and simultaneous failure of 80 tubes, thermal shock
was presupposed as the reason of failure. Deeper investigation on
cross-section of failed tubes showed that failure was, ductile type of
failure, so the first hypothesis was rejected. Further analysis and more
accurate experiments revealed that failure of tubes caused by thermal
water hammer. Finally, the causes of thermal water hammer and
various solutions to avoid such mechanism are discussed.
