Abstract: Approximate tandem repeats in a genomic sequence are
two or more contiguous, similar copies of a pattern of nucleotides.
They are used in DNA mapping, studying molecular evolution
mechanisms, forensic analysis and research in diagnosis of inherited
diseases. All their functions are still investigated and not well
defined, but increasing biological databases together with tools for
identification of these repeats may lead to discovery of their specific
role or correlation with particular features. This paper presents a new
approach for finding approximate tandem repeats in a given sequence,
where the similarity between consecutive repeats is measured using
the Hamming distance. It is an enhancement of a method for finding
exact tandem repeats in DNA sequences based on the Burrows-
Wheeler transform.
Abstract: Memristor is also known as the fourth fundamental
passive circuit element. When current flows in one direction through
the device, the electrical resistance increases and when current flows
in the opposite direction, the resistance decreases. When the current
is stopped, the component retains the last resistance that it had, and
when the flow of charge starts again, the resistance of the circuit will
be what it was when it was last active. It behaves as a nonlinear
resistor with memory. Recently memristors have generated wide
research interest and have found many applications. In this paper we
survey the various applications of memristors which include non
volatile memory, nanoelectronic memories, computer logic,
neuromorphic computer architectures low power remote sensing
applications, crossbar latches as transistor replacements, analog
computations and switches.
Abstract: This paper investigates experimentally and
analytically the torsion behavior of steel fibered high strength self
compacting concrete beams reinforced by GFRP bars. Steel fibered
high strength self compacting concrete (SFHSSCC) and GFRP bars
became in the recent decades a very important materials in the
structural engineering field. The use of GFRP bars to replace steel
bars has emerged as one of the many techniques put forward to
enhance the corrosion resistance of reinforced concrete structures.
High strength concrete and GFRP bars attract designers and
architects as it allows improving the durability as well as the esthetics
of a construction. One of the trends in SFHSSCC structures is to
provide their ductile behavior and additional goal is to limit
development and propagation of macro-cracks in the body of
SFHSSCC elements. SFHSSCC and GFRP bars are tough, improve
the workability, enhance the corrosion resistance of reinforced
concrete structures, and demonstrate high residual strengths after
appearance of the first crack. Experimental studies were carried out
to select effective fiber contents. Three types of volume fraction from
hooked shape steel fibers are used in this study, the hooked steel
fibers were evaluated in volume fractions ranging between 0.0%,
0.75% and 1.5%. The beams shape is chosen to create the required
forces (i.e. torsion and bending moments simultaneously) on the test
zone. A total of seven beams were tested, classified into three groups.
All beams, have 200cm length, cross section of 10×20cm,
longitudinal bottom reinforcement of 3
Abstract: In this paper, mesh-free element free Galerkin (EFG) method is extended to solve two-dimensional potential flow problems. Two ideal fluid flow problems (i.e. flow over a rigid cylinder and flow over a sphere) have been formulated using variational approach. Penalty and Lagrange multiplier techniques have been utilized for the enforcement of essential boundary conditions. Four point Gauss quadrature have been used for the integration on two-dimensional domain (Ω) and nodal integration scheme has been used to enforce the essential boundary conditions on the edges (┌). The results obtained by EFG method are compared with those obtained by finite element method. The effects of scaling and penalty parameters on EFG results have also been discussed in detail.
Abstract: This paper presents the elastic buckling of
homogeneous beams with a pair of piezoelectric layers surface
bonded on both sides of the beams. The displacement field of beam is
assumed based on the Engesser-Timoshenko beam theory.
Applying the Hamilton's principle, the equilibrium equation is
established. The influences of applied voltage, dimensionless
geometrical parameter and piezoelectric thickness on the critical
buckling load of beam are presented. To investigate the accuracy of
the present analysis, a compression study is carried out with a known
data.

Abstract: In this work Membrane Distillation is applied to
concentrate orange Juice. Clarified orange juice (11o Brix) obtained
from fresh fruits and a sugar solution was subjected to membrane
distillation. The experiments were performed on a flat sheet module
using orange juice and sucrose solution as feeds. The concentration
of a sucrose solution, used as a model fruit juice and also orange
juice, was carried out in a direct contact membrane distillation using
hydrophobic PTFE membrane of pore size 0.2 μm and porosity 70%.
Surface modification of PTFE membrane has been carried out by
treating membrane with alcohol and water solution to make it
hydrophilic and then hydrophobicity was regained by drying. The
influences of the feed temperature, feed concentration, flow rate,
operating time on the permeate flux were studied for treated and non
treated membrane. In this work treated and non treated membrane
were compared in terms of water flux, Within the tested range, MD
with surface modified membrane the water flux has been
significantly improved by treating the membrane surface.
Abstract: In the crack growth analysis, the Stress Intensity
Factor (SIF) is a fundamental prerequisite. In the present study, the
mode I stress intensity factor (SIF) of three-dimensional penny-
Shaped crack is obtained in an isotropic elastic cylindrical medium
with arbitrary dimensions under arbitrary loading at the top of the
cylinder, by the semi-analytical method based on the Rayleigh-Ritz
method. This method that is based on minimizing the potential
energy amount of the whole of the system, gives a very close results
to the previous studies. Defining the displacements (elastic fields) by
hypothetical functions in a defined coordinate system is the base of
this research. So for creating the singularity conditions at the tip of
the crack the appropriate terms should be found.
Abstract: The effect of Alumina nanoparticle size on thermophysical
properties, heat transfer performance and pressure loss characteristics of
Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF)-Al2O3 nanofluids is studied experimentally for
the proposed application of regenerative cooling of semi-cryogenic rocket
engine thrust chambers. Al2O3 particles with mean diameters of 50 nm or 150
nm are dispersed in ATF. At 500C and 0.3% particle volume concentration,
the bigger particles show increases of 17% in thermal conductivity and 55% in
viscosity, whereas the smaller particles show corresponding increases of 21%
and 22% for thermal conductivity and viscosity respectively. Contrary to these
results, experiments to study the heat transfer performance and pressure loss
characteristics show that at the same pumping power, the maximum
enhancement in heat transfer coefficient at 500C and 0.3% concentration is
approximately 47% using bigger particles, whereas it is only 36% using
smaller particles.
Abstract: In this paper, 3X3 routing nodes are proposed to
provide speedup and parallel processing capability in Data Vortex
network architectures. The new design not only significantly
improves network throughput and latency, but also eliminates the
need for distributive traffic control mechanism originally embedded
among nodes and the need for nodal buffering. The cost effectiveness
is studied by a comparison study with the previously proposed 2-
input buffered networks, and considerable performance enhancement
can be achieved with similar or lower cost of hardware. Unlike
previous implementation, the network leaves small probability of
contention, therefore, the packet drop rate must be kept low for such
implementation to be feasible and attractive, and it can be achieved
with proper choice of operation conditions.
Abstract: Knowledge capabilities are increasingly important for
the innovative technology enterprises to enhance the business
performance in terms of product competitiveness, innovation and
sales. Recognition of the company capability by auditing allows them
to further pursue advancement, strategic planning and hence gain
competitive advantages. This paper attempts to develop an
Organizations- Knowledge Capabilities Assessment (OKCA) method
to assess the knowledge capabilities of technology companies. The
OKCA is a questionnaire-based assessment tool which has been
developed to uncover the impact of various knowledge capabilities on
different organizational performance. The collected data is then
analyzed to find out the crucial elements for different technological
companies. Based on the results, innovative technology enterprises are
able to recognize the direction for further improvement on business
performance and future development plan. External environmental
factors affecting organization performance can be found through the
further analysis of some selected reference companies.
Abstract: High strength concrete has been used in situations
where it may be exposed to elevated temperatures. Numerous authors
have shown the significant contribution of polypropylene fiber to the
spalling resistance of high strength concrete.
When cement-based composite that reinforced by polypropylene
fibers heated up to 170 °C, polypropylene fibers readily melt and
volatilize, creating additional porosity and small channels in to the
matrix that cause the poor structure and low strength.
This investigation develops on the mechanical properties of mortar
incorporating polypropylene fibers exposed to high temperature.
Also effects of different pozzolans on strength behaviour of samples
at elevated temperature have been studied.
To reach this purpose, the specimens were produced by partial
replacement of cement with finely ground glass, silica fume and rice
husk ash as high reactive pozzolans. The amount of this replacement
was 10% by weight of cement to find the effects of pozzolans as a
partial replacement of cement on the mechanical properties of
mortars. In this way, lots of mixtures with 0%, 0.5%, 1% and 1.5% of
polypropylene fibers were cast and tested for compressive and
flexural strength, accordance to ASTM standard. After that
specimens being heated to temperatures of 300, 600 °C, respectively,
the mechanical properties of heated samples were tested.
Mechanical tests showed significant reduction in compressive
strength which could be due to polypropylene fiber melting. Also
pozzolans improve the mechanical properties of sampels.
Abstract: Use of fly ash as a supplementary cementing material
in large volumes can bring both technological and economic benefits
for concrete industry. In this investigation mix proportions for high
volume fly ash concrete were determined at cement replacement
levels of 50%, 55%, 60% and 65% with low calcium fly ash. Flexural
and compressive strengths of different mixes were measured at ages
of 7, 28 and 90 days. Flexural strength of composite section prepared
from pavement quality and lean high volume fly ash concrete was
determined at the age of 28 days. High volume fly ash concrete mixes
exhibited higher rate of strength gain and age factors than
corresponding reference concrete mixes. The optimum cement
replacement level for pavement quality concrete was found to be
60%. The consideration of bond between pavement quality and lean
of high volume fly ash concrete will be beneficial in design of rigid
pavements.
Abstract: Microbubbbles incorporating ultrasound have been used to increase the efficacy of targeted drug delivery, because microstreaming induced by cavitating bubbles affects the drug perfusion into the target cells and tissues. In order to clarify the physical effects of microstreaming on drug perfusion into tissues, a preliminary experimental study of perfusion enhancement by a stably oscillating microbubble was performed. Microstreaming was induced by an oscillating bubble at 15 kHz, and perfusion of dye into an agar phantom was optically measured by histology on agar phantom. Surface color intensity and the penetration length of dye in the agar phantom were increased more than 70% and 30%, respectively, due to the microstreaming induced by an oscillating bubble. The mass of dye perfused into a tissue phantom for 30 s was increased about 80% in the phantom with an oscillating bubble. This preliminary experiment shows the physical effects of steady streaming by an oscillating bubble can enhance the drug perfusion into the tissues while minimizing the biological effects.

method which is based on the special pole placement encoding
scheme and optimization by Genetic Algorithms (GA). The examples
will show the performance of the novel designed polynomial
controller with comparison to common PID controller.
Abstract: This paper describes the performance of TCP Vegas
over the wireless IPv6 network. The performance of TCP Vegas is
evaluated using network simulator (ns-2). The simulation experiment
investigates how packet spacing affects the network delay, network
throughput and network efficiency of TCP Vegas. Moreover, we
investigate how the variable FTP packet sizes affect the network
performance. The result of the simulation experiment shows that as
the packet spacing is implements, the network delay is reduces,
network throughput and network efficiency is optimizes. As the FTP
packet sizes increase, the ratio of delay per throughput decreases.
From the result of experiment, we propose the appropriate packet size
in transmitting file transfer protocol application using TCP Vegas
with packet spacing enhancement over wireless IPv6 environment in
ns-2. Additionally, we suggest the appropriate ratio in determining
the appropriate RTT and buffer size in a network.
Abstract: Changing technology and increased constituent
demand for government services derive the need for governmental
responsiveness. The government organisations in the developing
countries will be under increased pressure to change their
bureaucratic systems to be able to respond rapidly to changing and
increasing requirements and rapid technology advancements. This
paper aims to present a conceptual framework for explaining the
main barriers and drivers of public e-service development. Therefore,
the framework provides a basic context within which the process and
practice of E-Service can be implemented successfully in the public
sector organisations. The framework is flexible enough to be adopted
by governments at different levels; national or local by developing
countries around the world.
Abstract: This paper describes the crashworthiness assessment and improvement of tlting train made of sandwich composites. The crashworhiness assessment of tilting train was conducted according to four collision scenarios of the Korean railway safety law. Collision analysis was carried out using explicit finite element analysis code LS-DYNA 3D. The finite element model consists of 3-D finite element model and 1-D equivalent model to save the finite element modeling and calculation time. It found that the crashworthiness analysis results were satisfied with the performance requirements except the crash scenario-2. In order to meet the crashworthiness requirements for crash scenario-2, the stiffness reinforcement for the laminate composite cover and metal frames of cabmask structure were proposed. Consequentially, it has satisfied the requirement for crash scenario-2.
Abstract: In this paper, Fabless Prototyping Methodology is
introduced for the design and analysis of MEMS devices.
Conventionally Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is performed before
system level simulation. In our proposed methodology, system level
simulation is performed earlier than FEA as it is computationally less
extensive and low cost. System level simulations are based on
equivalent behavioral models of MEMS device. Electrostatic
actuation based MEMS Microgripper is chosen as case study to
implement this methodology. This paper addresses the behavioral
model development and simulation of actuator part of an
electrostatically actuated Microgripper. Simulation results show that
the actuator part of Microgripper works efficiently for a voltage range
of 0-45V with the corresponding jaw displacement of 0-4.5425μm.
With some minor changes in design, this range can be enhanced to
15μm at 85V.
Abstract: The present work deals with thermodynamic analysis
of cascade refrigeration system using ozone friendly refrigerants pair
R507A and R23. R507A is azeotropic mixture composed of HFC
refrigerants R125/R143a (50%/50% wt.). R23 is a single component
HFC refrigerant used as replacement to CFC refrigerant R13 in low
temperature applications. These refrigerants have zero ozone
depletion potential and are non-flammable and as R507A an
azeotropic mixture there is no problem of temperature glide. This
study thermodynamically analyzed R507A-R23 cascade refrigeration
system to optimize the design and operating parameters of the
system. The design and operating parameters include: Condensing,
evaporating, subcooling and superheating temperatures in the high
temperature circuit, temperature difference in the cascade heat
exchanger, Condensing, evaporating, subcooling and superheating
temperatures in the low temperature circuit.
