Abstract: Experimental economics is subject to criticism with
regards to frequently discussed the trade-off between internal and
external validity requirements, which seems to be critically flawed.
This paper evaluates incompatibility of trade-off condition and
condition of internal validity as a prerequisite for external validity. In
addition, it outlines the imprecise concept of artificiality, which is
found to be rather improving the external validity and seems to
strengthen the illusory status of external versus internal validity
tension. Internal validity is further analyzed with regards to Duhem-
Quine problem, where unpredictability argument is significantly
weakened trough application of inductivism within the illustrative
hypothetical-deductive model. Our discussion partially weakens
critical arguments related to the robustness of results in experimental
economics, if the perfectly controlled experimental environment is
secured.
Abstract: There is not much effective guideline on development of design parameters selection on spring back for advanced high strength steel sheet metal in U-channel process during cold forming process. This paper presents the development of predictive model for spring back in U-channel process on advanced high strength steel sheet employing Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The experimental was performed on dual phase steel sheet, DP590 in Uchannel forming process while design of experiment (DoE) approach was used to investigates the effects of four factors namely blank holder force (BHF), clearance (C) and punch travel (Tp) and rolling direction (R) were used as input parameters using two level values by applying Full Factorial design (24 ). From a statistical analysis of variant (ANOVA), result showed that blank holder force (BHF), clearance (C) and punch travel (Tp) displayed significant effect on spring back of flange angle (β2 ) and wall opening angle (β1 ), while rolling direction (R) factor is insignificant. The significant parameters are optimized in order to reduce the spring back behavior using Central Composite Design (CCD) in RSM and the optimum parameters were determined. A regression model for spring back was developed. The effect of individual parameters and their response was also evaluated. The results obtained from optimum model are in agreement with the experimental values.
Abstract: It is the worldwide problem that the recycled PVB is
not recycled and it is wildly stored in landfills. However, PVB has
similar chemical properties such as PVC. Moreover, both of these
polymers are plasticized. Therefore, the study of thermal properties
of plasticized PVC and the recycled PVB obtained by recycling of
windshields is carried out. This work has done in order to find nondegradable
processing conditions applicable for both polymers.
Tested PVC contained 38% of plasticizer diisononyl phthalate
(DINP) and PVB was plasticized with 28% of triethylene glycol,
bis(2-ethylhexanoate) (3GO). The thermal and thermo-oxidative
decomposition of both vinyl polymers are compared by calorimetric
analysis and by tensile strength analysis.
Abstract: Metal thin-walled members have been widely used in
building industry. Usually they are utilized as purlins, girts or ceiling
beams. Due to slenderness of thin-walled cross-sections these
structural members are prone to stability problems (e.g. flexural
buckling, lateral torsional buckling). If buckling is not
constructionally prevented their resistance is limited by buckling
strength. In practice planar members of roof or wall cladding can be
attached to thin-walled members. These elements reduce
displacement of thin-walled members and therefore increase their
buckling strength. If this effect is taken into static assessment more
economical sections of thin-walled members might be utilized and
certain savings of material might be achieved. This paper focuses on
problem of determination of critical load of steel thin-walled beams
with lateral continuous restraint which is crucial for lateral torsional
buckling assessment.
Abstract: This paper presents the results of an experimental
study undertaken to evaluate the local bond stress-slip response of
short embedment of reinforcing bars in normal concrete (NC) and
high performance fiber reinforced cement composites (HPFRCC)
blocks. Long embedment was investigated as well to gain insights on
the distribution of strain, slip, bar stress and bond stress along the bar
especially in post-yield range. A total of 12 specimens were tested,
by means of pull-out of the reinforcing bars from concrete blocks. It
was found that the enhancement of local bond strength can be
reached up to 50% and ductility of the bond behavior was improved
significantly if HPFRCC is used. Also, under a constant strain at
loaded end, HPFRCC has delayed yielding of bars at other location
from the loaded end. Hence, the reduction of bond stress was slower
for HPFRCC in comparison with NC. Due to the same reason, the
total slips at loaded end for HPFRCC was smaller than NC as
expected. Test results indicated that HPFRCC has better bond slip
behavior which makes it a suitable material to be employed in
anchorage zone such as beam-column joints.
Abstract: White concrete facade elements are widely used in
construction industry. It is challenging to achieve the desired
workability in casting of white concrete elements. Particle Matrix
model was used for proportioning the self-compacting white concrete
(SCWC) to control segregation and bleeding and to improve
workability. The paper presents how to reach the target slump flow
while controlling bleeding and segregation in SCWC. The amount of
aggregates, binders and mixing water, as well as type and dosage of
superplasticizer (SP) to be used are the major factors influencing the
properties of SCWC. Slump flow and compressive strength tests were
carried out to examine the performance of SCWC, and the results
indicate that the particle matrix model could produce successfully
SCWC controlling segregation and bleeding.
Abstract: The paper deals with the classical fiber bundle model
of equal load sharing, sometimes referred to as the Daniels’ bundle
or the democratic bundle. Daniels formulated a multidimensional
integral and also a recursive formula for evaluation of the
strength cumulative distribution function. This paper describes
three algorithms for evaluation of the recursive formula and also
their implementations with source codes in the Python high-level
programming language. A comparison of the algorithms are provided
with respect to execution time. Analysis of orders of magnitudes of
addends in the recursion is also provided.
Abstract: Aim of this work is to determine the theoretical and
experimental properties of filament wound glass fiber/epoxy resin
composite pipes with different winding design subjected under
bending. For determination of bending strength of composite samples
three point bending tests were conducted. Good correlation between
theoretical and experimental results has been obtained, where sample
No4 has shown the highest value of bending strength. All samples
have demonstrated matrix cracking and fiber failure followed by
layers delamination during testing. Also, it was found that smaller
winding angles lead to an increase in bending stress. From presented
results good merger between glass fibers and epoxy resin was
confirmed by SEM analysis.
Abstract: Press-hardened profiles are used e.g. for automotive
applications in order to improve light weight construction due to the
high reachable strength. The application of interior water-air spray
cooling contributes to significantly reducing the cycle time in the
production of heat-treated tubes. This paper describes a new
manufacturing method for producing press-hardened hollow profiles
by means of an additional interior cooling based on a water-air spray.
Furthermore, this paper provides the results of thorough
investigations on the properties of press-hardened tubes in
dependence of varying spray parameters.
Abstract: This paper is aimed to the use of different types of
industrial wastes in concrete production. From examined waste
(crushed concrete waste) our tested concrete samples with dimension
150 mm were prepared. In these samples, fractions 4/8 mm and 8/16
mm by recycled concrete aggregate with a range of variation from 0
to 100% were replaced. Experiment samples were tested for
compressive strength after 2, 7, 14 and 28 days of hardening.
From obtained results it is evident that all samples prepared with
washed recycled concrete aggregates met the requirement of standard
for compressive strength of 20 MPa already after 14 days of
hardening. Sample prepared with recycled concrete aggregates (4/8
mm: 100% and 8/16 mm: 60%) reached 101% of compressive
strength value (34.7 MPa) after 28 days of hardening in comparison
with the reference sample (34.4 MPa). The lowest strength after 28
days of hardening (27.42 MPa) was obtained for sample consisting of
recycled concrete in proportion of 40% for 4/8 fraction and 100% for
8/16 fraction of recycled concrete.
Abstract: Failure of typical seismic frames has been found by
plastic hinge occurring on beams section near column faces. On the
other hand, the seismic capacity of the frames can be enhanced if the
plastic hinges of the beams are shifted away from the column faces.
This paper presents detailing of reinforcements in the interior beam–
column connections aiming to relocate the plastic hinge of reinforced
concrete and precast concrete frames. Four specimens were tested
under quasi-static cyclic load including two monolithic specimens
and two precast specimens. For one monolithic specimen, typical
seismic reinforcement was provided and considered as a reference
specimen named M1. The other reinforced concrete frame M2
contained additional intermediate steel in the connection area
compared with the specimen M1. For the precast specimens,
embedded T-section steels in joint were provided, with and without
diagonal bars in the connection area for specimen P1 and P2,
respectively. The test results indicated the ductile failure with beam
flexural failure in monolithic specimen M1 and the intermediate steel
increased strength and improved joint performance of specimen M2.
For the precast specimens, cracks generated at the end of the steel
inserts. However, slipping of reinforcing steel lapped in top of the
beams was seen before yielding of the main bars leading to the brittle
failure. The diagonal bars in precast specimens P2 improved the
connection stiffness and the energy dissipation capacity.
Abstract: The seismic risk mitigation from the perspective of
the old buildings stock is truly essential in Algerian urban areas,
particularly those located in seismic prone regions, such as Annaba
city, and which the old buildings present high levels of degradation
associated with no seismic strengthening and/or rehabilitation
concerns. In this sense, the present paper approaches the issue of the
seismic vulnerability assessment of old masonry building stocks
through the adaptation of a simplified methodology developed for a
European context area similar to that of Annaba city, Algeria.
Therefore, this method is used for the first level of seismic
vulnerability assessment of the masonry buildings stock of the old
city center of Annaba. This methodology is based on a vulnerability
index that is suitable for the evaluation of damage and for the
creation of large-scale loss scenarios. Over 380 buildings were
evaluated in accordance with the referred methodology and the
results obtained were then integrated into a Geographical Information
System (GIS) tool. Such results can be used by the Annaba city
council for supporting management decisions, based on a global view
of the site under analysis, which led to more accurate and faster
decisions for the risk mitigation strategies and rehabilitation plans.
Abstract: This paper analyzes the conceptual framework of three
statistical methods, multiple regression, path analysis, and structural
equation models. When establishing research model of the statistical
modeling of complex social phenomenon, it is important to know the
strengths and limitations of three statistical models. This study
explored the character, strength, and limitation of each modeling and
suggested some strategies for accurate explaining or predicting the
causal relationships among variables. Especially, on the studying of
depression or mental health, the common mistakes of research
modeling were discussed.
Abstract: The present study was carried out to investigate the
effect of alloying elements and thermo-mechanical treatment (TMT)
i.e. hot rolling and forging with different reduction ratios on the
hardness (HV) and impact toughness (J) of heat-treated low alloy
steels. An understanding of the combined effect of TMT and alloying
elements and by measuring hardness, impact toughness, resulting
from different heat treatment following TMT of the low alloy steels,
it is possible to determine which conditions yielded optimum
mechanical properties and high strength to weight ratio.
Experimental Correlations between hot work reduction ratio,
hardness and impact toughness for thermo-mechanically heat treated
low alloy steels are analyzed quantitatively, and both regression and
mathematical hardness and impact toughness models are developed.
Abstract: This study presented to reduce earthquake damage and
emergency rehabilitation of critical structures such as schools, hightech
factories, and hospitals due to strong ground motions associated
with climate changes. Regarding recent trend, a strong earthquake
causes serious damage to critical structures and then the critical
structure might be influenced by sequence aftershocks (or tsunami)
due to fault plane adjustments. Therefore, in order to improve seismic
performance of critical structures, retrofitted or strengthening study
of the structures under aftershocks sequence after emergency
rehabilitation of the structures subjected to strong earthquakes is
widely carried out. Consequently, this study used composite material
for emergency rehabilitation of the structure rather than concrete and
steel materials because of high strength and stiffness, lightweight,
rapid manufacturing, and dynamic performance. Also, this study was
to develop or improve the seismic performance or seismic retrofit of
critical structures subjected to strong ground motions and earthquake
aftershocks, by utilizing GFRP-Corrugated Infill Panels (GCIP).
Abstract: Present paper describes method of obtaining clay
ceramic foam (CCF) and foam concrete (FC), by direct foaming with
high speed mixer-disperser (HSMD). Three foaming agents (FA) are
compared for the FC and CCF production: SCHÄUMUNGSMITTEL
W 53 FLÜSSIG (Zschimmer & Schwarz Gmbh, Germany), SCF-
1245 (Sika, test sample, Latvia) and FAB-12 (Elade, Latvija). CCF
were obtained at 950, 1000°C, 1150°C and 1150°C firing temperature
and have mechanical compressive strength 1.2, 2.55 and 4.3 MPa and
porosity 79.4, 75.1, 71.6%, respectively. Obtained FC has 6-14 MPa
compressive strength and porosity 44-55%. The goal of this work
was development of a sustainable and durable ceramic cellular
structures using HSMD.
Abstract: High pressure turbine (HPT) blades of DV – 2 jet
engines are made from Ni – based superalloy. This alloy was
originally manufactured in the Soviet Union and referred as ŽS6K.
For improving alloy’s high temperature resistance are blades coated
with Al – Si diffusion layer. A regular operation temperature of HPT
blades vary from 705°C to 750°C depending on jet engine regime.
An overcrossing working temperature range causes degradation of
the protective coating as well as base material which microstructure
is formed by the gamma matrix and strengthening phase gamma
prime (forming small particles in the microstructure). Diffusion
processes inside the material during exposition of the material to high
temperatures causes mainly coarsening of the gamma prime particles,
thus decreasing its strengthening effect. Degradation of the Al – Si
coating caused its thickness growth. All the microstructure changes
and coating layer thickness growth results in decreasing of the turbine
blade operation lifetime.
Abstract: Indonesian higher education has experienced
significant changes over the last decade. In 1999, the government
published an overall strategy for decentralisation and enhancement of
local autonomy in many sectors, including (higher) education.
Indonesian higher education reforms have forced universities to
restructure their internal university governance to become more
entrepreneurial. These new types of internal university governance
are likely to affect the institutions’ leadership and management. This
paper discusses the approach and findings of a study on the
managerial leadership styles of deans in Indonesian universities. The
study aims to get a better understanding of styles exhibited by deans
manifested in their behaviours. Using the theories of reasoned action
and planned behaviour, in combination with the competing values
framework, a large-scale survey was conducted to gather information
on the deans’ behaviours, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived
behavioural control. Based on the responses of a sample of 218
deans, the study identifies a number of leadership styles: the Master,
the Competitive Consultant, the Consensual Goal-Setter, the Focused
Team Captain, and the Informed Trust-Builder style. The study
demonstrates that attitudes are the primary determinant of the styles
that were found. Perceived behavioural control is a factor that
explains some managerial leadership styles. By understanding the
attitudes of deans in Indonesian universities, and their leadership
styles, universities can strengthen their management and governance,
and thus improve their effectiveness.
Abstract: One of the crucial parameters of digital cryptographic
systems is the selection of the keys used and their distribution. The
randomness of the keys has a strong impact on the system’s security
strength being difficult to be predicted, guessed, reproduced, or
discovered by a cryptanalyst. Therefore, adequate key randomness
generation is still sought for the benefit of stronger cryptosystems.
This paper suggests an algorithm designed to generate and test
pseudo random number sequences intended for cryptographic
applications. This algorithm is based on mathematically manipulating
a publically agreed upon information between sender and receiver
over a public channel. This information is used as a seed for
performing some mathematical functions in order to generate a
sequence of pseudorandom numbers that will be used for
encryption/decryption purposes. This manipulation involves
permutations and substitutions that fulfill Shannon’s principle of
“confusion and diffusion”. ASCII code characters were utilized in the
generation process instead of using bit strings initially, which adds
more flexibility in testing different seed values. Finally, the obtained
results would indicate sound difficulty of guessing keys by attackers.
Abstract: Fly ash (FA) thanks to the significant presence of SiO2
and Al2O3 as the main components is a potential raw material for
geopolymers production. Mechanical activation is a method for
improving FA reactivity and also the porosity of final mixture; those
parameters can be analysed through sorption properties. They have
direct impact on the durability of fly ash based geopolymer mortars.
In the paper, effect of FA fineness on sorption properties of
geopolymers based on sodium silicate, as well as relationship
between fly ash fineness and apparent density, compressive and
flexural strength of geopolymers are presented. The best results in the
evaluated area reached the sample H1, which contents the highest
portion of particle under 20μm (100% of GFA). The interdependence
of individual tested properties was confirmed for geopolymer
mixtures corresponding to those in the cement based mixtures: higher
is portion of fine particles < 20μm, higher is strength, density and
lower are sorption properties. The compressive strength as well as
sorption parameters of the geopolymer can be reasonably controlled
by grinding process and also ensured by the higher share of fine
particle (to 20μm) in total mass of the material.
