Abstract: The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling
Problem (RCPSP) is concerned with single-item or small batch
production where limited resources have to be allocated to dependent
activities over time. Over the past few decades, a lot of work has
been made with the use of optimal solution procedures for this basic
problem type and its extensions. Brucker and Knust[1] discuss, how
timetabling problems can be modeled as a RCPSP. Authors discuss
high school timetabling and university course timetabling problem as
an example. We have formulated two mathematical formulations of
course timetabling problem in a new way which are the prototype of
single-mode RCPSP. Our focus is to show, how course timetabling
problem can be transformed into RCPSP. We solve this
transformation model with genetic algorithm.
Abstract: Categorical data based on description of the
agricultural landscape imposed some mathematical and analytical
limitations. This problem however can be overcome by data
transformation through coding scheme and the use of non-parametric
multivariate approach. The present study describes data
transformation from qualitative to numerical descriptors. In a
collection of 103 random soil samples over a 60 hectare field,
categorical data were obtained from the following variables: levels of
nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, pH, hue, chroma, value and data on
topography, vegetation type, and the presence of rocks. Categorical
data were coded, and Spearman-s rho correlation was then calculated
using PAST software ver. 1.78 in which Principal Component
Analysis was based. Results revealed successful data transformation,
generating 1030 quantitative descriptors. Visualization based on the
new set of descriptors showed clear differences among sites, and
amount of variation was successfully measured. Possible applications
of data transformation are discussed.
Abstract: Hospitals in southern Hualien teamed with the
Hypertension Joint Care Network. Working with the network, the
team provided a special designed health education to the individual
who had been identified as a hypertension patient in the outpatient
department. Some metabolism improvements achieved. This is a
retrospective study by purposively taking 106 patients from a hospital
between 2008 and 2010. Records of before and after education
intervention of the objects was collected and analyzed to see the how
the intervention affected the patients- hypertension control via clinical
parameter monitoring. The results showed that the clinical indicators,
the LDL-C, the cholesterol and the systolic blood pressure were
significantly improved. The study provides evidence for the
effectiveness of the network in controlling hypertension.
Abstract: By analyzing the sources of energy and power
loss in PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) controlled drivers of
water electrolysis cells, it is possible to reduce the power
dissipation and enhance the efficiency of such hydrogen
production units. A PWM controlled power driver is based on
a semiconductor switching element where its power
dissipation might be a remarkable fraction of the total power
demand of an electrolysis system. Power dissipation in a
semiconductor switching element is related to many different
parameters which could be fitted into two main categories:
switching losses and conduction losses. Conduction losses are
directly related to the built, structure and capabilities of a
switching device itself and indeed the conditions in which the
element is handling the switching application such as voltage,
current, temperature and of course the fabrication technology.
On the other hand, switching losses have some other
influencing variables other than the mentioned such as control
system, switching method and power electronics circuitry of
the PWM power driver. By analyzings the characteristics of
recently developed power switching transistors from different
families of Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJT), Metal Oxide
Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFET) and
Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT), some
recommendations are made in this paper which are able to
lead to achieve higher hydrogen production efficiency by
utilizing PWM controlled water electrolysis cells.
Abstract: This paper presents the first reflexions about Margaret Mascarenhas-s novel, “Skin", based on post-colonial critic perception of History and its agents. By doing so, this study will put light on a literary corpus of Indian Literatures: the Goan Literature whose cultural basis creates an unique historiographic metafiction conducted by different characters that one by one plays the narrator role.
Abstract: The current situation in the eurozone raises a number of topics for discussion and to help in finding an answer to the question of whether a common currency is a more suitable means of coping with the impact of the financial crisis or whether national currencies are better suited to this. The economic situation in the EU is now considerably volatile and, due to problems with the fulfilment of the Maastricht convergence criteria, it is now being considered whether, in their further development, new member states will decide to distance themselves from the euro or will, in an attempt to overcome the crisis, speed up the adoption of the euro. The Czech Republic is one country with little interest in adopting the euro, justified by the fact that a better alternative to dealing with this crisis is an independent monetary policy and its ability to respond flexibly to the economic situation not only in Europe, but around the world. One attribute of the crisis in the Czech Republic and its mitigation is the freely floating exchange rate of the national currency. It is not only the Czech Republic that is attempting to alleviate the impact of the crisis, but also new EU member countries facing fresh questions to which theory have yet to provide wholly satisfactory answers. These questions undoubtedly include the problem of inflation targeting and the choice of appropriate instruments for achieving financial stability. The difficulty lies in the fact that these objectives may be contradictory and may require more than one means of achieving them. In this respect we may assume that membership of the euro zone might not in itself mitigate the development of the recession or protect the nation from future crises. We are of the opinion that the decisive factor in the development of any economy will continue to be the domestic economic policy and the operability of market economic mechanisms. We attempt to document this fact using selected countries as examples, these being the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia.
Abstract: In the modern manufacturing systems, the use of
thermal cutting techniques using oxyfuel, plasma and laser have
become indispensable for the shape forming of high quality complex
components; however, the conventional chip removal production
techniques still have its widespread space in the manufacturing
industry. Both these types of machining operations require the
positioning of end effector tool at the edge where the cutting process
commences. This repositioning of the cutting tool in every machining
operation is repeated several times and is termed as non-productive
time or airtime motion. Minimization of this non-productive
machining time plays an important role in mass production with high
speed machining. As, the tool moves from one region to the other by
rapid movement and visits a meticulous region once in the whole
operation, hence the non-productive time can be minimized by
synchronizing the tool movements. In this work, this problem is
being formulated as a general travelling salesman problem (TSP) and
a genetic algorithm approach has been applied to solve the same. For
improving the efficiency of the algorithm, the GA has been
hybridized with a noble special heuristic and simulating annealing
(SA). In the present work a novel heuristic in the combination of GA
has been developed for synchronization of toolpath movements
during repositioning of the tool. A comparative analysis of new Meta
heuristic techniques with simple genetic algorithm has been
performed. The proposed metaheuristic approach shows better
performance than simple genetic algorithm for minimization of nonproductive
toolpath length. Also, the results obtained with the help of
hybrid simulated annealing genetic algorithm (HSAGA) are also
found better than the results using simple genetic algorithm only.
Abstract: The paper presents coupled electromagnetic and
thermal field analysis of busbar system (of rectangular cross-section
geometry) submitted to short circuit conditions. The laboratory model
was validated against both analytical solution and experimental
observations. The considered problem required the computation of
the detailed distribution of the power losses and the heat transfer
modes. In this electromagnetic and thermal analysis, different
definitions of electric busbar heating were considered and compared.
The busbar system is a three phase one and consists of aluminum,
painted aluminum and copper busbar. The solution to the coupled
field problem is obtained using the finite element method and the
QuickField™ program. Experiments have been carried out using two
different approaches and compared with computed results.
Abstract: Silicon is a beneficial element for plant growth. It
helps plants to overcome multiple stresses, alleviates metal toxicity
and improves nutrient imbalance. Field experiment was conducted as
split-split plot arranged in a randomized complete block design with
four replications. Irrigation system include continues flooding and
deficit as main plots and nitrogen rates N0, N46, N92, and N138 kg/ha
as sub plots and silicon rates Si0 & Si500 kg/ha as sub-subplots.
Results indicate that grain yield had not significant difference
between irrigation systems. Flooding irrigation had higher biological
yield than deficit irrigation whereas, no significant difference in grain
and straw yield. Nitrogen application increased grain, biological and
straw yield. Silicon application increased grain, biological and straw
yield but, decreased harvest index. Flooding irrigation had higher
number of total tillers / hill than deficit irrigation, but deficit
irrigation had higher number of fertile tillers / hill than flooding
irrigation. Silicon increased number of filled spikelet and decreased
blank spikelet. With high nitrogen application decreased 1000-grain
weight. It can be concluded that if the nitrogen application was high
and water supplied was available we could have silicon application
until increase grain yield.
Abstract: This article presents a detailed analysis and comparative
performance evaluation of model reference adaptive control systems.
In contrast to classical control theory, adaptive control methods allow
to deal with time-variant processes. Inspired by the works [1] and
[2], two methods based on the MIT rule and Lyapunov rule are
applied to a linear first order system. The system is simulated and
it is investigated how changes to the adaptation gain affect the
system performance. Furthermore, variations in the reference model
parameters, that is changing the desired closed-loop behaviour are
examinded.
Abstract: This paper proposes a method for speckle reduction in
medical ultrasound imaging while preserving the edges with the
added advantages of adaptive noise filtering and speed. A nonlinear
image diffusion method that incorporates local image parameter,
namely, scatterer density in addition to gradient, to weight the
nonlinear diffusion process, is proposed. The method was tested for
the isotropic case with a contrast detail phantom and varieties of
clinical ultrasound images, and then compared to linear and some
other diffusion enhancement methods. Different diffusion parameters
were tested and tuned to best reduce speckle noise and preserve
edges. The method showed superior performance measured both
quantitatively and qualitatively when incorporating scatterer density
into the diffusivity function. The proposed filter can be used as a
preprocessing step for ultrasound image enhancement before
applying automatic segmentation, automatic volumetric calculations,
or 3D ultrasound volume rendering.
Abstract: Urbanization and related anthropogenic modifications
cause extent of habitat fragmentation and directly lead to decline of
local biodiversity. Conservation biologists advocate corridor creation
as one approach to rescue biodiversity. Here we examine the utility of
roads as corridors in preserving plant diversity by investigating
roadside vegetation in Yellow River Delta (YRD), China. We
examined the spatio-temporal distribution pattern of plant species
richness, diversity and composition along roadside. The results
suggest that roads, as dispersal conduits, increase occurrence
probability of new settlers to a new area, meanwhile, roads accumulate
the greater propagule pressure and favourable survival condition
during operation phase. As a result, more species, including native and
alien plants, non- halophyte and halophyte species, threatened and
cosmopolitic species, were found prosperous at roadside. Roadside
may be a refuge for more species, and the pattern of vegetation
distribution is affected by road age and the distance from road verge.
Abstract: Cognitive Science appeared about 40 years ago,
subsequent to the challenge of the Artificial Intelligence, as common
territory for several scientific disciplines such as: IT, mathematics,
psychology, neurology, philosophy, sociology, and linguistics. The
new born science was justified by the complexity of the problems
related to the human knowledge on one hand, and on the other by the
fact that none of the above mentioned sciences could explain alone
the mental phenomena. Based on the data supplied by the
experimental sciences such as psychology or neurology, models of
the human mind operation are built in the cognition science. These
models are implemented in computer programs and/or electronic
circuits (specific to the artificial intelligence) – cognitive systems –
whose competences and performances are compared to the human
ones, leading to the psychology and neurology data reinterpretation,
respectively to the construction of new models. During these
processes if psychology provides the experimental basis, philosophy
and mathematics provides the abstraction level utterly necessary for
the intermission of the mentioned sciences.
The ongoing general problematic of the cognitive approach
provides two important types of approach: the computational one,
starting from the idea that the mental phenomenon can be reduced to
1 and 0 type calculus operations, and the connection one that
considers the thinking products as being a result of the interaction
between all the composing (included) systems. In the field of
psychology measurements in the computational register use classical
inquiries and psychometrical tests, generally based on calculus
methods. Deeming things from both sides that are representing the
cognitive science, we can notice a gap in psychological product
measurement possibilities, regarded from the connectionist
perspective, that requires the unitary understanding of the quality –
quantity whole. In such approach measurement by calculus proves to
be inefficient. Our researches, deployed for longer than 20 years,
lead to the conclusion that measuring by forms properly fits to the
connectionism laws and principles.
Abstract: The ever-growing usage of aspect-oriented
development methodology in the field of software engineering
requires tool support for both research environments and industry. So
far, tool support for many activities in aspect-oriented software
development has been proposed, to automate and facilitate their
development. For instance, the AJaTS provides a transformation
system to support aspect-oriented development and refactoring. In
particular, it is well established that the abstract interpretation of
programs, in any paradigm, pursued in static analysis is best served
by a high-level programs representation, such as Control Flow Graph
(CFG). This is why such analysis can more easily locate common
programmatic idioms for which helpful transformation are already
known as well as, association between the input program and
intermediate representation can be more closely maintained.
However, although the current researches define the good concepts
and foundations, to some extent, for control flow analysis of aspectoriented
programs but they do not provide a concrete tool that can
solely construct the CFG of these programs. Furthermore, most of
these works focus on addressing the other issues regarding Aspect-
Oriented Software Development (AOSD) such as testing or data flow
analysis rather than CFG itself. Therefore, this study is dedicated to
build an aspect-oriented control flow graph construction tool called
AJcFgraph Builder. The given tool can be applied in many software
engineering tasks in the context of AOSD such as, software testing,
software metrics, and so forth.
Abstract: Automatic methods of detecting changes through
satellite imaging are the object of growing interest, especially
beca²use of numerous applications linked to analysis of the Earth’s
surface or the environment (monitoring vegetation, updating maps,
risk management, etc...). This work implemented spatial analysis
techniques by using images with different spatial and spectral
resolutions on different dates. The work was based on the principle
of control charts in order to set the upper and lower limits beyond
which a change would be noted. Later, the a contrario approach was
used. This was done by testing different thresholds for which the
difference calculated between two pixels was significant. Finally,
labeled images were considered, giving a particularly low difference
which meant that the number of “false changes” could be estimated
according to a given limit.
Abstract: This paper presents Simulation and experimental
study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of an adaptive artificial
neural network stabilizer on enhancing the damping torque of a
synchronous generator. For this purpose, a power system comprising
a synchronous generator feeding a large power system through a
short tie line is considered. The proposed adaptive neuro-control
system consists of two multi-layered feed forward neural networks,
which work as a plant model identifier and a controller. It generates
supplementary control signals to be utilized by conventional
controllers. The details of the interfacing circuits, sensors and
transducers, which have been designed and built for use in tests, are
presented. The synchronous generator is tested to investigate the
effect of tuning a Power System Stabilizer (PSS) on its dynamic
stability. The obtained simulation and experimental results verify the
basic theoretical concepts.
Abstract: Partial combustion of biomass in the gasifier generates producer gas that can be used for heating purposes and as supplementary or sole fuel in internal combustion engines. In this study, the virgin biomass obtained from hingan shell is used as the feedstock for gasifier to generate producer gas. The gasifier-engine system is operated on diesel and on esters of vegetable oil of hingan in liquid fuel mode operation and then on liquid fuel and producer gas combination in dual fuel mode operation. The performance and emission characteristics of the CI engine is analyzed by running the engine in liquid fuel mode operation and in dual fuel mode operation at different load conditions with respect to maximum diesel savings in the dual fuel mode operation. It was observed that specific energy consumption in the dual fuel mode of operation is found to be in the higher side at all load conditions. The brake thermal efficiency of the engine using diesel or hingan oil methyl ester (HOME) is higher than that of dual fuel mode operation. A diesel replacement in the tune of 60% in dual fuel mode is possible with the use of hingan shell producer gas. The emissions parameters such CO, HC, NOx, CO2 and smoke are higher in the case of dual fuel mode of operation as compared to that of liquid fuel mode.
Abstract: Drinking water is one of the most valuable resources
available to mankind. The presence of pathogens in drinking water is
highly undesirable. Because of the Lateritic soil, the iron
concentrations were high in ground water. High concentration of iron
and other trace elements could restrict bacterial growth and modify
their metabolic pattern as well. The bacterial growth rate reduced in
the presence of iron in water. This paper presents the results of a
controlled laboratory study conducted to assess the inhibition of
micro-organism (pathogen) in well waters in the presence of
dissolved iron concentrations. Synthetic samples were studied in the
laboratory and the results compared with field samples. Predictive
model for microbial inhibition in the presence of iron is presented. It
was seen that the bore wells, open wells and the field results varied,
probably due to the nature of micro-organism utilizing the iron in
well waters.
Abstract: The aim of this article is to assess the existing
business models used by the banks operating in the CEE countries in
the time period from 2006 till 2011.
In order to obtain research results, the authors performed
qualitative analysis of the scientific literature on bank business
models, which have been grouped into clusters that consist of such
components as: 1) capital and reserves; 2) assets; 3) deposits, and 4)
loans.
In their turn, bank business models have been developed based on
the types of core activities of the banks, and have been divided into
four groups: Wholesale, Investment, Retail and Universal Banks.
Descriptive statistics have been used to analyse the models,
determining mean, minimal and maximal values of constituent
cluster components, as well as standard deviation. The analysis of
the data is based on such bank variable indices as Return on Assets
(ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE).
Abstract: Although oil-based drilling fluids are of paramount practical and economical interest, they represent a serious source of pollution, once released into the environment as drill cuttings. The aim of this study is to assess the capability of isolated microorganisms to degrade gasoil fuel. The commonly used physicochemical and biodegradation remediation techniques of petroleum contaminated soil were both investigated. The study revealed that natural biodegradation is favorable. Even though, the presence of heavy metals, the moisture level of (8.55%) and nutrient deficiencies put severe constrains on microorganisms- survival ranges inhibiting the biodegradation process. The selected strains were able to degrade the diesel fuel at significantly high rates (around 98%).
