Abstract: This paper presents the results related to the
interference reduction technique in multistage multiuser detector for
asynchronous DS-CDMA system. To meet the real-time
requirements for asynchronous multiuser detection, a bit streaming,
cascade architecture is used. An asynchronous multiuser detection
involves block-based computations and matrix inversions. The paper
covers iterative-based suboptimal schemes that have been studied to
decrease the computational complexity, eliminate the need for matrix
inversions, decreases the execution time, reduces the memory
requirements and uses joint estimation and detection process that
gives better performance than the independent parameter estimation
method. The stages of the iteration use cascaded and bits processed
in a streaming fashion. The simulation has been carried out for
asynchronous DS-CDMA system by varying one parameter, i.e.,
number of users. The simulation result exhibits that system gives
optimum bit error rate (BER) at 3rd stage for 15-users.
Abstract: A modified Genetic Algorithm (GA) based optimal selection of parameters for Automatic Generation Control (AGC) of multi-area electric energy systems is proposed in this paper. Simulations on multi-area reheat thermal system with and without consideration of nonlinearity like governor dead band followed by 1% step load perturbation is performed to exemplify the optimum parameter search. In this proposed method, a modified Genetic Algorithm is proposed where one point crossover with modification is employed. Positional dependency in respect of crossing site helps to maintain diversity of search point as well as exploitation of already known optimum value. This makes a trade-off between exploration and exploitation of search space to find global optimum in less number of generations. The proposed GA along with decomposition technique as developed has been used to obtain the optimum megawatt frequency control of multi-area electric energy systems. Time-domain simulations are conducted with trapezoidal integration along with decomposition technique. The superiority of the proposed method over existing one is verified from simulations and comparisons.
Abstract: Due to the low heavy metal concentrations, the
bottom ash from a 32 MW municipal district heating plant was
determined to be a potential forest fertilizer as such. However,
additional Ca would be needed, because its Ca concentration of 1.9-
% (d.w.) was lower than the statutory Finnish minimum limit value
of 6.0-% (d.w.) for Ca in forest fertilizer. Due to the elevated As
concentration (53.0 mg/kg; d.w.) in the fly ash from the 32 MW
municipal district heating plant, and Cr concentration (620 mg/kg;
d.w.) in the ash fraction (i.e. mixture of the bottom ash and fly ash)
from the 6 MW municipal district heating plant, which exceed the
limit values of 30 mg/kg (d.w.) and 300 mg/kg (d.w.) for As and Cr,
respectively, these residues are not suitable as forest fertilizers.
Although these ash fractions cannot be used as a forest fertilizer as
such, they can be used for the landscaping of landfills or in industrial
and other areas that are closed to the public. However, an
environmental permit is then needed.
Abstract: State tax revenues in most countries started to decrease during the recession. Government of Latvia decided to compensate the decline by increasing rates of several taxes including excise tax on strong alcohol. The total increase in 2009 constituted 42% and the rate increased from 896€ to 1 266€ for 100l of absolute alcohol. Since then this has had a negative impact on consumption volumes and the split between legal and illegal market. The legal alcohol sales decreased by almost 50% (by volume), consequentially having negative effect on the State revenues from VAT and excise tax. Estimated results for 2010 are indicating 54 million € decrease in VAT, excise tax and other taxes versus 2008 (excise tax -19 million €, VAT -30 million €, other taxes -5 million €). The paper aims to analyze impact of the increase in excise tax on consumption patterns, State revenues and competitiveness of the local companies to draw up proposals for the state authorities regarding more effective tax policies. The analysis reveals a relationship between excise tax rate, illegal alcohol market and State revenues. The results can be used to improve excise tax system and effectiveness in Latvia.
Abstract: This paper presents and discusses the numerical simulations of transient laminar natural convection cooling of high Prandtl number fluids in cubical cavities, in which the six walls of the cavity are subjected to a step change in temperature. The effect of the fluid Prandtl number on the heat transfer coefficient is studied for three different fluids (Golden Syrup, Glycerin and Glycerin-water solution 50%). The simulations are performed at two different Rayleigh numbers (5·106 and 5·107) and six different Prandtl numbers (3 · 105 ≥Pr≥ 50). Heat conduction through the cavity glass walls is also considered. The propsed correlations of the averaged heat transfer coefficient (N u) showed that it is dependant on the initial Ra and almost independent on P r. The instantaneous flow patterns, temperature contours and time evolution of volume averaged temperature and heat transfer coefficient are presented and analyzed.
Abstract: This paper draws a methodological framework adopted within an internal Telecomitalia project aimed to identify, on a user centred base, the potential interest towards a technological scenario aimed to extend on a personal bubble the typical communication and media fruition home environment. The problem is that involving user in the early stage of the development of such disruptive technology scenario asking users opinions on something that users actually do not manage even in a rough manner could lead to wrong or distorted results. For that reason we chose an approach that indirectly aim to understand users hidden needs in order to obtain a meaningful picture of the possible interest for a technological proposition non yet easily understandable.
Abstract: We present a theory for optimal filtering of infinite sets of random signals. There are several new distinctive features of the proposed approach. First, we provide a single optimal filter for processing any signal from a given infinite signal set. Second, the filter is presented in the special form of a sum with p terms where each term is represented as a combination of three operations. Each operation is a special stage of the filtering aimed at facilitating the associated numerical work. Third, an iterative scheme is implemented into the filter structure to provide an improvement in the filter performance at each step of the scheme. The final step of the concerns signal compression and decompression. This step is based on the solution of a new rank-constrained matrix approximation problem. The solution to the matrix problem is described in this paper. A rigorous error analysis is given for the new filter.
Abstract: Exponentially weighted moving average control chart (EWMA) is a popular chart used for detecting shift in the mean of parameter of distributions in quality control. The objective of this paper is to compare the efficiency of control chart to detect an increases in the mean of a process. In particular, we compared the Maximum Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (MaxEWMA) and Maximum Generally Weighted Moving Average (MaxGWMA) control charts when the observations are Exponential distribution. The criteria for evaluate the performance of control chart is called, the Average Run Length (ARL). The result of comparison show that in the case of process is small sample size, the MaxEWMA control chart is more efficiency to detect shift in the process mean than MaxGWMA control chart. For the case of large sample size, the MaxEWMA control chart is more sensitive to detect small shift in the process mean than MaxGWMA control chart, and when the process is a large shift in mean, the MaxGWMA control chart is more sensitive to detect mean shift than MaxEWMA control chart.

over the axisymmetric bodies in a cylindrical area is considered. The
equation is studied in a moving coordinate system with the
appropriate boundary conditions. Effective formulas for the velocity
components are obtained. The graphs of the velocity components and

Abstract: Simulation model is an easy way to build up models
to represent real life scenarios, to identify bottlenecks and to enhance
system performance. Using a valid simulation model may give
several advantages in creating better manufacturing design in order to
improve the system performances. This paper presents result of
implementing a simulation model to design hard disk drive
manufacturing process by applying line balancing to improve both
productivity and quality of hard disk drive process. The line balance
efficiency showed 86% decrease in work in process, output was
increased by an average of 80%, average time in the system was
decreased 86% and waiting time was decreased 90%.
Abstract: We present new finite element methods for Helmholtz and Maxwell equations on general three-dimensional polyhedral meshes, based on domain decomposition with boundary elements on the surfaces of the polyhedral volume elements. The methods use the lowest-order polynomial spaces and produce sparse, symmetric linear systems despite the use of boundary elements. Moreover, piecewise constant coefficients are admissible. The resulting approximation on the element surfaces can be extended throughout the domain via representation formulas. Numerical experiments confirm that the convergence behavior on tetrahedral meshes is comparable to that of standard finite element methods, and equally good performance is attained on more general meshes.
Abstract: Sugarcane bagasses are one of the most extensively used agricultural residues. Using acid hydrolysis and fermentation, conversion of sugarcane bagasses to lactic acid was technically and economically feasible. This research was concerned with the solubility of lignin in ammonium hydroxide, acid hydrolysis and lactic acid fermentation by Lactococcus lactis, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus casei. The lignin extraction results for different ammonium hydroxide concentrations showed that 10 % (v/v) NH4OH was favorable to lignin dissolution. Acid hydrolysis can be enhanced with increasing acid concentration and reaction temperature. The optimum glucose and xylose concentrations occurred at 121 ○C for 1 hour hydrolysis time in 10% sulphuric acid solution were 32 and 11 g/l, respectively. In order to investigate the significance of medium composition on lactic acid production, experiments were undertaken whereby a culture of Lactococcus lactis was grown under various glucose, peptone, yeast extract and xylose concentrations. The optimum medium was composed of 5 g/l glucose, 2.5 g/l xylose, 10 g/l peptone and 5 g/l yeast extract. Lactococcus lactis represents the most efficient for lactic acid production amongst those considered. The lactic acid fermentation by Lactococcus lactis after 72 hours gave the highest yield of 1.4 (g lactic acid per g reducing sugar).
Abstract: This study empirically examines the long run equilibrium relationship between South Africa’s exports and imports using quarterly data from 1985 to 2012. The theoretical framework used for the study is based on Johansen’s Maximum Likelihood cointegration technique which tests for both the existence and number of cointegration vectors that exists. The study finds that both the series are integrated of order one and are cointegrated. A statistically significant cointegrating relationship is found to exist between exports and imports. The study models this unique linear and lagged relationship using a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). The findings of the study confirm the existence of a long run equilibrium relationship between exports and imports.
Abstract: In order to provide accurate heart rate variability
indices of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, the low
frequency and high frequency components of an RR heart rate signal
must be adequately separated. This is not always possible by just
applying spectral analysis, as power from the high and low frequency
components often leak into their adjacent bands. Furthermore,
without the respiratory spectra it is not obvious that the low
frequency component is not another respiratory component, which
can appear in the lower band. This paper describes an adaptive filter,
which aids the separation of the low frequency sympathetic and high
frequency parasympathetic components from an ECG R-R interval
signal, enabling the attainment of more accurate heart rate variability
measures. The algorithm is applied to simulated signals and heart rate
and respiratory signals acquired from an ambulatory monitor
incorporating single lead ECG and inductive plethysmography
sensors embedded in a garment. The results show an improvement
over standard heart rate variability spectral measurements.
Abstract: There is a paucity of data on the prevalence of alcohol
use and related problems among foreign students in Belarus. We
therefore screen for the prevalence of alcohol related problems
among the general foreign students- population in Minsk, Belarus.
Participants were 135 male university foreign students (average age –
21) from three major universities in Minsk, Belarus. All respondents
were administered questionnaire, containing the AUDIT, CAGE,
MAST and other alcohol related questions. Overall, 62.2% (n=84)
alcohol users and 31.1% (n=42) problem drinkers were identified on
the AUDIT. There was a significant increase (from 39.3% to 60.7%)
of the total alcohol users after arrival in Belarus (¤ç2 = 7.714, p
Abstract: In data mining, the association rules are used to find
for the associations between the different items of the transactions
database. As the data collected and stored, rules of value can be found
through association rules, which can be applied to help managers
execute marketing strategies and establish sound market frameworks.
This paper aims to use Fuzzy Frequent Pattern growth (FFP-growth)
to derive from fuzzy association rules. At first, we apply fuzzy
partition methods and decide a membership function of quantitative
value for each transaction item. Next, we implement FFP-growth
to deal with the process of data mining. In addition, in order to
understand the impact of Apriori algorithm and FFP-growth algorithm
on the execution time and the number of generated association
rules, the experiment will be performed by using different sizes of
databases and thresholds. Lastly, the experiment results show FFPgrowth
algorithm is more efficient than other existing methods.
Abstract: In this paper a new cost function for blind equalization
is proposed. The proposed cost function, referred to as the modified
maximum normalized cumulant criterion (MMNC), is an extension
of the previously proposed maximum normalized cumulant criterion
(MNC). While the MNC requires a separate phase recovery system
after blind equalization, the MMNC performs joint blind equalization
and phase recovery. To achieve this, the proposed algorithm
maximizes a cost function that considers both amplitude and phase of
the equalizer output. The simulation results show that the proposed
algorithm has an improved channel equalization effect than the MNC
algorithm and simultaneously can correct the phase error that the
MNC algorithm is unable to do. The simulation results also show that
the MMNC algorithm has lower complexity than the MNC algorithm.
Moreover, the MMNC algorithm outperforms the MNC algorithm
particularly when the symbols block size is small.
Abstract: This paper presents a hybrid algorithm for solving a timetabling problem, which is commonly encountered in many universities. The problem combines both teacher assignment and course scheduling problems simultaneously, and is presented as a mathematical programming model. However, this problem becomes intractable and it is unlikely that a proven optimal solution can be obtained by an integer programming approach, especially for large problem instances. A hybrid algorithm that combines an integer programming approach, a greedy heuristic and a modified simulated annealing algorithm collaboratively is proposed to solve the problem. Several randomly generated data sets of sizes comparable to that of an institution in Indonesia are solved using the proposed algorithm. Computational results indicate that the algorithm can overcome difficulties of large problem sizes encountered in previous related works.
Abstract: A cross sectional study design and standard
microbiological procedures were used to determine the prevalence
and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Escherichia coli,
Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium and Vibrio cholerae O1
isolated from water and two fish species Rastrineobola argentea and
Oreochromis niloticus collected from fish landing beaches and
markets in the Lake Victoria Basin of western Kenya. Out of 162
samples analyzed, 133 (82.1%) were contaminated, with S.
typhimurium as the most prevalent (49.6%), followed by E. coli
(46.6%), and lastly V. cholerae (2.8%). All the bacteria isolates were
sensitive to ciprofloxacin. E. coli isolates were resistant to ampicillin,
tetracycline, cotrimoxazole, chloramphenical and gentamicin while
S. typhimurium isolates exhibited resistance to ampicillin,
tetracycline, and cotrimoxazole. The V. cholerae O1 isolates were
resistant to tetracycline and ampicillin. The high prevalence of drug
resistant enteric bacteria in water and fish from the study region
needs public health intervention from the local government.
Abstract: Hypertension is characterized with stress on the heart and blood vessels thus increasing the risk of heart attack and renal diseases. The Renin angiotensin system (RAS) plays a major role in blood pressure control. Renin is the enzyme that controls the RAS at the rate-limiting step. Our aim is to develop new drug-like leads which can inhibit renin and thereby emerge as therapeutics for hypertension. To achieve this, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and receptor-based pharmacophore modeling were implemented, and three rennin-inhibitor complex structures were selected based on IC50 value and scaffolds of inhibitors. Three pharmacophore models were generated considering conformations induced by inhibitor. The compounds mapped to these models were selected and subjected to drug-like screening. The identified hits were docked into the active site of renin. Finally, hit1 satisfying the binding mode and interaction energy was selected as possible lead candidate to be used in novel renin inhibitors.
