Abstract: The major objective of this study is to understand the
potential of a newly fabricated equipment to study the thermal
properties of nonwoven textile fabrics treated with aerogel at subzero
temperatures. Thermal conductivity was calculated by using the
empirical relation Fourier’s law, The relationship between the
thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of the samples were
studied at various environmental temperatures (which was set in the
clima temperature system between +25oC to -25oC). The newly
fabricated equipment was found to be a suitable for measuring at
subzero temperatures. This field of measurements is being developed
and will be the subject of further research which will be more suitable
for measurement of the various thermal characteristics.
Abstract: Image data holds a large amount of different context
information. However, as of today, these resources remain largely
untouched. It is thus the aim of this paper to present a basic technical
framework which allows for a quick and easy exploitation of context
information from image data especially by non-expert users.
Furthermore, the proposed framework is discussed in detail
concerning important social and ethical issues which demand special
requirements in system design. Finally, a first sensor prototype is
presented which meets the identified requirements. Additionally,
necessary implications for the software and hardware design of the
system are discussed, rendering a sensor system which could be
regarded as a good, acceptable and justifiable technical and thereby
enabling the extraction of context information from image data.
Abstract: This study was conducted to investigate the incidence
of pathogenic bacteria: Salmonella, Shigella, Escherichia coli O157
and Staphylococcus aureus in cakes and tarts collected from thirtyfive
confectionery producing and selling premises located within
Tripoli city, Libya. The results revealed an incidence of S. aureus
with 94.4 and 48.0 %, E. coli O157 with 14.7 and 4.0 % and Salmonella
sp. with 5.9 and 8.0 % in cakes and tarts samples respectively;
while Shigella was not detected in all samples. In order to determine
the source of these pathogenic bacteria, cotton swabs were taken
from the hands of workers on the production line, the surfaces of
preparation tables and cream whipping instruments. The results
showed that the cotton swabs obtained from the hands of workers
contained S. aureus and Salmonella sp. with an incidence of 42.9 and
2.9 %, the cotton swabs obtained from the surfaces of preparation
tables 22.9 and 2.9 % and the cotton swabs obtained from the cream
whipping instruments 14.3 and 0.0 % respectively; while E. coli
O157 and Shigella sp. were not detected in all swabs. Additionally,
other bacteria were isolated from the hands of workers and the Surfaces
of producing equipments included: Aeromonas sp., Pseudomonas
sp., E. coli, Klebsiella sp., Enterobacter sp., Citrobacter sp.,
Proteus sp., Serratia sp. and Acinetobacter sp. These results indicate
that some of the cakes and tarts might pose threat to consumer's
health. Meanwhile, occurrences of pathogenic bacteria on the hands
of those who are working in production line and the surfaces of
equipments reflect poor hygienic practices at most confectionery
premises examined in this study. Thus, firm and continuous surveillance
of these premises is needed to insure the consumer's health and
safety.
Abstract: The paper reviews the relationship between spatial
and transportation planning in the Southern African Development
Community (SADC) region of Sub-Saharan Africa. It argues that
most urbanisation in the region has largely occurred subsequent to
the 1950s and, accordingly, urban development has been
profoundly and negatively affected by the (misguided) spatial and
institutional tenets of modernism. It demonstrates how a
considerable amount of the poor performance of these settlements
can be directly attributed to this. Two factors in particular about the
planning systems are emphasized: the way in which programmatic
land-use planning lies at the heart of both spatial and transportation
planning; and the way on which transportation and spatial planning
have been separated into independent processes. In the final
section, the paper identifies ways of improving the planning
system. Firstly, it identifies the performance qualities which
Southern African settlements should be seeking to achieve.
Secondly, it focuses on two necessary arenas of change: the need to
replace programmatic land-use planning practices with structuralspatial
approaches; and it makes a case for making urban corridors
a spatial focus of integrated planning, as a way of beginning the
restructuring and intensification of settlements which are currently
characterised by sprawl, fragmentation and separation
Abstract: We propose that Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) should be designed by taking into account the characteristics, the special needs and the specific operating rules of the academic institutions in which they are employed. In this context, we describe a VLE module that extends the support of the organization and delivery of course material by including administration activities related to the various stages of teaching. These include the co-ordination, collaboration and monitoring of the course material development process and institution-specific course material delivery modes. Our specialized module, which enhances VLE capabilities by Helping Educators and Learners through a Laboratory Assistance System, is willing to assist the Greek tertiary technological sector, which includes Technological Educational Institutes (T.E.I.).
Abstract: Supply chain networks are frequently hit by
unplanned events which lead to disruptions and cause operational and
financial consequences. It is neither possible to avoid disruption risk
entirely, nor are network members able to prepare for every possible
disruptive event. Therefore a continuity planning should be set up
which supports effective operational responses in supply chain
networks in times of emergencies. In this research network related
degrees of freedom which determine the options for responsive
actions are derived from interview data. The findings are further
embedded into a common risk management process. The paper
provides support for researchers and practitioners to identify the
network related options for responsive actions and to determine the
need for improving the reaction capabilities.
Abstract: In most of the cases, natural disasters lead to the
necessity of evacuating people. The quality of evacuation
management is dramatically improved by the use of information
provided by decision support systems, which become indispensable
in case of large scale evacuation operations. This paper presents a
best practice case study. In November 2007, officers from the
Emergency Situations Inspectorate “Crisana" of Bihor County from
Romania participated to a cross-border evacuation exercise, when
700 people have been evacuated from Netherlands to Belgium. One
of the main objectives of the exercise was the test of four different
decision support systems. Afterwards, based on that experience,
software system called TEVAC (Trans Border Evacuation) has been
developed “in house" by the experts of this institution. This original
software system was successfully tested in September 2008, during
the deployment of the international exercise EU-HUROMEX 2008,
the scenario involving real evacuation of 200 persons from Hungary
to Romania. Based on the lessons learned and results, starting from
April 2009, the TEVAC software is used by all Emergency
Situations Inspectorates all over Romania.
Abstract: Whereas cellular wireless communication systems are
subject to short-and long-term fading. The effect of wireless channel
has largely been ignored in most of the teletraffic assessment
researches. In this paper, a mathematical teletraffic model is proposed
to estimate blocking and forced termination probabilities of cellular
wireless networks as a result of teletraffic behavior as well as the
outage of the propagation channel. To evaluate the proposed
teletraffic model, gamma inter-arrival and general service time
distributions have been considered based on wireless channel fading
effect. The performance is evaluated and compared with the classical
model. The proposed model is dedicated and investigated in different
operational conditions. These conditions will consider not only the
arrival rate process, but also, the different faded channels models.
Abstract: The prevalence of non organic constipation differs
from country to country and the reliability of the estimate rates is
uncertain. Moreover, the clinical relevance of subdividing the
heterogeneous functional constipation disorders into pre-defined
subgroups is largely unknown.. Aim: to estimate the prevalence of
constipation in a population-based sample and determine whether
clinical subgroups can be identified. An age and gender stratified
sample population from 5 Italian cities was evaluated using a
previously validated questionnaire. Data mining by cluster analysis
was used to determine constipation subgroups. Results: 1,500
complete interviews were obtained from 2,083 contacted households
(72%). Self-reported constipation correlated poorly with symptombased
constipation found in 496 subjects (33.1%). Cluster analysis
identified four constipation subgroups which correlated to subgroups
identified according to pre-defined symptom criteria. Significant
differences in socio-demographics and lifestyle were observed
among subgroups.
Abstract: Experiments with pumpkin-rowanberry marmalade
candies were carried out at the Faculty of Food Technology of the
Latvia University of Agriculture. The objective of this investigation
was to evaluate the quality changes of pumpkin-rowanberry
marmalade candies packed in different packaging materials during
the storage of 15 weeks, and to find the most suitable packaging
material for prolongation of low sugar marmalade candies shelf-life.
An active packaging in combination with modified atmosphere
(MAP, CO2 100%) was examined and compared with traditional
packaging in air ambiance. Polymer Multibarrier 60 and paper bags
were used. Influence of iron based oxygen absorber in sachets of 500
cc obtained from Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Europe Ageless® on the
marmalade candies’ quality was tested during shelf life. Samples of
80±5 g were packaged in polymer pouches (110 mm x 110 mm),
hermetically sealed by MULTIVAC C300 vacuum chamber machine,
and stored in a room temperature +21±0.5 °C. The physiochemical
properties –moisture content, hardness, aw, pH, changes of
atmosphere content (CO2 and O2), ascorbic acid, total carotenoids,
total phenols in headspace of packs, and microbial conditions were
analysed before packaging and in the 1st, 3rd , 5th, 8th, 11th and 15th
weeks of storage.
Abstract: In the present study, the pressure drop and laminar convection heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids in microchannel heat sink with square duct are numerically investigated. The water based nanofluids created with Al2O3 and CuO particles in four different volume fractions of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% are used to analyze their effects on heat transfer and the pressure drop. Under the laminar, steady-state flow conditions, the finite volume method is used to solve the governing equations of heat transfer. Mixture Model is considered to simulate the nanofluid flow. For verification of used numerical method, the results obtained from numerical calculations were compared with the results in literature for both pure water and the nanofluids in different volume fractions. The distributions of the particles in base fluid are assumed to be uniform. The results are evaluated in terms of Nusselt number, the pressure drop and heat transfer enhancement. Analysis shows that the nanofluids enhance heat transfer while the Reynolds number and the volume fractions are increasing. The best overall enhancement was obtained at φ=%2 and Re=100 for CuO-water nanofluid.
Abstract: Proteins levels produced by bacteria may be increased
in stressful surroundings, such as in the presence of antibiotics. It
appears that many antimicrobial agents or antibiotics, when used at
low concentrations, have in common the ability to activate or repress
gene transcription, which is distinct from their inhibitory effect.
There have been comparatively few studies on the potential of
antibiotics or natural compounds in nature as a specific chemical
signal that can trigger a variety of biological functions. Therefore,
this study was focusing on the effect of essential oils from
Cymbopogon flexuosus and C. nardus in regulating proteins
production by Bacillus subtilis ATCC 21332. The Minimum
Inhibition Concentrations (MICs) of both essential oils on B. subtilis
were determined by using microdilution assay, resulting 0.2% and
1.56% for each C. flexuosus and C. nardus subsequently. The
bacteria were further exposed to each essential oils at concentration
of 0.01XMIC for 2 days. The proteins were then isolated and
analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel
electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Protein profile showed that a band
with approximate size of 250 kD was appeared for the treated
bacteria with essential oils. Thus, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 21332 in
stressful condition with the presence of essential oils at low
concentration could induce the protein production.
Abstract: Classification is one of the primary themes in
computational biology. The accuracy of classification strongly
depends on quality of a dataset, and we need some method to
evaluate this quality. In this paper, we propose a new graphical
analysis method using 'Membership-Deviation Graph (MDG)' for
analyzing quality of a dataset. MDG represents degree of
membership and deviations for instances of a class in the dataset. The
result of MDG analysis is used for understanding specific feature and
for selecting best feature for classification.
Abstract: Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is a measure of
the oxygen used in bacteria mediated oxidation of organic substances
in water and wastewater. Theoretically an infinite time is required for
complete biochemical oxidation of organic matter, but the
measurement is made over 5-days at 20 0C or 3-days at 27 0C test
period with or without dilution. Researchers have worked to further
reduce the time of measurement.
The objective of this paper is to review advancement made in
BOD measurement primarily to minimize the time and negate the
measurement difficulties. Survey of literature review in four such
techniques namely BOD-BARTTM, Biosensors, Ferricyanidemediated
approach, luminous bacterial immobilized chip method.
Basic principle, method of determination, data validation and their
advantage and disadvantages have been incorporated of each of the
methods.
In the BOD-BARTTM method the time lag is calculated for the
system to change from oxidative to reductive state. BIOSENSORS
are the biological sensing element with a transducer which produces
a signal proportional to the analyte concentration. Microbial species
has its metabolic deficiencies. Co-immobilization of bacteria using
sol-gel biosensor increases the range of substrate. In ferricyanidemediated
approach, ferricyanide has been used as e-acceptor instead
of oxygen. In Luminous bacterial cells-immobilized chip method,
bacterial bioluminescence which is caused by lux genes was
observed. Physiological responses is measured and correlated to
BOD due to reduction or emission.
There is a scope to further probe into the rapid estimation of BOD.
Abstract: The kinetics of palm oil catalytic cracking over
aluminum containing mesoporous silica Al-MCM-41 (5% Al) was
investigated in a batch autoclave reactor at the temperatures range of
573 – 673 K. The catalyst was prepared by using sol-gel technique
and has been characterized by nitrogen adsorption and x-ray
diffraction methods. Surface area of 1276 m2/g with average pore
diameter of 2.54 nm and pore volume of 0.811 cm3/g was obtained.
The experimental catalytic cracking runs were conducted using 50 g
of oil and 1 g of catalyst. The reaction pressure was recorded at
different time intervals and the data were analyzed using Levenberg-
Marquardt (LM) algorithm using polymath software. The results
show that the reaction order was found to be -1.5 and activation
energy of 3200 J/gmol.
Abstract: The project describes the modeling of various
architectures mechatronics specifically morphologies of robots in an educational environment. Each structure developed by students of
pre-school, primary and secondary was created using the concept of
reverse engineering in a constructivist environment, to later be integrated in educational software that promotes the teaching of
educational Robotics in a virtual and economic environment.
Abstract: The purpose of Grid computing is to utilize
computational power of idle resources which are distributed in
different areas. Given the grid dynamism and its decentralize
resources, there is a need for an efficient scheduler for scheduling
applications. Since task scheduling includes in the NP-hard problems
various researches have focused on invented algorithms especially
the genetic ones. But since genetic is an inherent algorithm which
searches the problem space globally and does not have the efficiency
required for local searching, therefore, its combination with local
searching algorithms can compensate for this shortcomings. The aim
of this paper is to combine the genetic algorithm and GELS (GAGELS)
as a method to solve scheduling problem by which
simultaneously pay attention to two factors of time and number of
missed tasks. Results show that the proposed algorithm can decrease
makespan while minimizing the number of missed tasks compared
with the traditional methods.
Abstract: The present paper discusses the selection of process
parameters for obtaining optimal nanocrystallites size in the CuOZrO2
catalyst. There are some parameters changing the inorganic
structure which have an influence on the role of hydrolysis and
condensation reaction. A statistical design test method is
implemented in order to optimize the experimental conditions of
CuO-ZrO2 nanoparticles preparation. This method is applied for the
experiments and L16 orthogonal array standard. The crystallites size
is considered as an index. This index will be used for the analysis in
the condition where the parameters vary. The effect of pH, H2O/
precursor molar ratio (R), time and temperature of calcination,
chelating agent and alcohol volume are particularity investigated
among all other parameters. In accordance with the results of
Taguchi, it is found that temperature has the greatest impact on the
particle size. The pH and H2O/ precursor molar ratio have low
influences as compared with temperature. The alcohol volume as
well as the time has almost no effect as compared with all other
parameters. Temperature also has an influence on the morphology
and amorphous structure of zirconia. The optimal conditions are
determined by using Taguchi method. The nanocatalyst is studied by
DTA-TG, XRD, EDS, SEM and TEM. The results of this research
indicate that it is possible to vary the structure, morphology and
properties of the sol-gel by controlling the above-mentioned
parameters.
Abstract: Since DVB-RCS has been successively implemented, the mobile communication on the multi-beam satellite communication is attractive attention. And the DVB-RCS standard sets up to support mobility of a RCST. In the case of the spot-beam satellite system, the received signal strength does not differ largely between the center and the boundary of the beam. Thus, the RSS based handoff detection algorithm is not benefit to the satellite system as a terrestrial system. Therefore we propose an Adaptive handoff detection algorithm based on RCST mobility information. Our handoff detection algorithm not only can be used as centralized handoff detection algorithm but also removes uncertainties of handoff due to the variation of RSS. Performances were compared with RSS based handoff algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed handoff detection algorithm not only achieved better handoff and link degradation rate, but also achieved better forward link spectral efficiency.
Abstract: In the paper we presented the possibility of application
collagen gels with active principle-s from marine algae extract and chlorhexidine salt in dental medicine. The hydro-alcoholic extracts
from marine algae have been used as they have been obtained. The extracts from marine algae and chlorhexidine salt (digluconate) are
incorporated in type I non-denatured fibrillar collagen matrixes. In order to obtain therapeutic effects at nanostructure level, it is important to know the rheological characteristics of the relevant mixtures of collagen gels and extracts from marine algae selected for use. In this survey we have studied mixtures made of non-denatured
fibrillar collagen hydro-gels where different concentrations of marine
algae have been incorporated. Based on the data obtained for the
shearing tensions, we have traced the rheograms – the diagrams for shearing tensions depending on the shearing speed values – from
which we have calculated the apparent viscosities as ratios between shearing tension and speed values, which have been figured in
relation to the shearing speed values, with a view to levelling
dependency.
