Abstract: This paper presents the electromagnetic interference
(EMI) shielding effectiveness of rice husk and carbon nanotubes
(RHCNTs) composites in the X-band region (8.2-12.4 GHz). The
difference weight ratio of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were mix with
the rice husk. The rectangular waveguide technique was used to
measure the complex permittivity of the RHCNTs composites
materials. The complex permittivity is represented in terms of both
the real and imaginary parts of permittivity in X-band frequency. The
conductivity of RHCNTs shows increasing when the ratio of CNTs
mixture increases. The composites materials were simulated using
Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Microwave Studio
simulation software. The shielding effectiveness of RHCNTs and
pure rice husk was compared. The highest EMI SE of 30 dB is
obtained for RHCNTs composites of 10 wt % CNTs with 10mm
thickness.
Abstract: Among all FACTS devices, the unified power flow
controller (UPFC) is considered to be the most versatile device.
This is due to its capability to control all the transmission system
parameters (impedance, voltage magnitude, and phase angle). With
the growing interest in UPFC, the attention to develop a mathematical
model has increased. Several models were introduced for UPFC in
literature for different type of studies in power systems. In this paper
a novel comparison study between two dynamic models of UPFC
with their proposed control strategies.
Abstract: In this paper the design, fabrication, and testing of a miniaturized rectangular microstrip patch antenna loaded with DNG metamaterials is reported. The metamaterial is composed of two nested spiral strips and a single straight strip which are etched on two sides of a 5.7 mm×5.7 mm Rogers RT/duroid 5880 with 0.5 mm thickness and dielectric constant of 2.2. Two units of this structure as a double negative (DNG) medium in combination with air as a double positive (DPS) medium are used as substrate of the microstrip patch antenna. By placing these metamaterial structures under the patch, a sub-wavelength resonance occurs which leads to a smaller size patch antenna compared to the conventional antenna at that frequency. The total size of the proposed antenna is reduced 54.6%. The dimensions of the proposed patch antenna are significantly smaller than the wavelength of the operation frequency with respect to the conventional patch antenna. Simulation result and test result for the proposed patch antenna are given and compared.
Abstract: This paper presents the effect of electric field
distribution which is an electric field intensity analysis. Consideration
of the dielectric heating of grains and insects, the rice and rice
weevils are utilized for dielectric heating analysis. Furthermore, this
analysis compares the effect of electric field distribution in rice and
rice weevil. In this simulation, two copper plates are used to generate
the electric field for dielectric heating system and put the rice
materials between the copper plates. The simulation is classified in
two cases, which are case I one rice weevil is placed in the rice and
case II two rice weevils are placed at different position in the rice.
Moreover, the probes are located in various different positions on
plate. The power feeding on this plate is optimized by using CST EM
studio program of 1000 watt electrical power at 39 MHz resonance
frequency. The results of two cases are indicated that the most
electric field distribution and intensity are occurred on the rice and
rice weevils at the near point of the probes. Moreover, the heat is
directed to the rice weevils more than the rice. When the temperature
of rice and rice weevils are calculated and compared, the rice weevils
has the temperature more than rice is about 41.62 Celsius degrees.
These results can be applied for the dielectric heating applications to
eliminate insect.
Abstract: This paper presents breast cancer detection by
observing the specific absorption rate (SAR) intensity for
identification tumor location, the tumor is identified in coordinates
(x,y,z) system. We examined the frequency between 4-8 GHz to look
for the most appropriate frequency. Results are simulated in
frequency 4-8 GHz, the model overview include normal breast with
50 mm radian, 5 mm diameter of tumor, and ultra wideband (UWB)
bowtie antenna. The models are created and simulated in CST
Microwave Studio. For this simulation, we changed antenna to 5
location around the breast, the tumor can be detected when an
antenna is close to the tumor location, which the coordinate of
maximum SAR is approximated the tumor location. For reliable, we
experiment by random tumor location to 3 position in the same size
of tumor and simulation the result again by varying the antenna
position in 5 position again, and it also detectable the tumor position
from the antenna that nearby tumor position by maximum value of
SAR, which it can be detected the tumor with precision in all
frequency between 4-8 GHz.
Abstract: This numerical study aims to develop a coupled,
passive and active control strategy of the flow around a cylinder of
diameter D, and Re=4000. The strategy consists to put a cylindrical
rod in front of a deforming cylinder. The quasi- elliptical deformation
of cylinder follow a sinusoidal law in order to reduce the drag force.
To analyze the evolution of unsteady vortices, the Large Eddy
Simulation approach is used in this 2D simulation, carried out using
ANSYS – Fluent. The movement of deformation is reproduced using
an internal subroutine, introduced in the form of a User Defined
Function UDF. Two diameters of the rod were tested for a rod placed
at a distance L = 3 ×d, with an amplitudes of deformation A = 5%, A
= 25% and A = 50% of the cylinder diameter, the frequency of
deformation take the values fd = 1fn, 5fn and 8fn, which fn
represents the naturel vortex shedding frequency. The results show
substantial changes in the flow behavior and for a rod of 6mm (1%
D) with amplitude A = 25%, and with a 2fn frequency, drag
reduction of 60% was recorded.
Abstract: A mechanically-resonant torsional spring scanner was developed in a recent study. Various methods were developed to improve the angular displacement of the scanner while maintaining the scanner frequency. However the effects of rotor magnet radial position on scanner characteristics were not well investigated. In this study, the relationships between the magnet position and the scanner characteristics such as natural frequency, angular displacement and stress level were studied. A finite element model was created and an average deviation of 3.18% was found between the simulation and experimental results, qualifying the simulation results as a guide for further investigations. Three magnet positions on the transverse oscillating suspended plate were investigated by finite element analysis (FEA) and one of the positions were selected as the design position. The magnet position with the longest distance from the twist axis of mirror was selected since it attains minimum stress level, while exceeding the minimum critical flicker frequency and delivering the targeted angular displacement to the scanner.
Abstract: Multilevel inverters such as flying capacitor, diodeclamped,
and cascaded H-bridge inverters are very popular
particularly in medium and high power applications. This paper
focuses on a cascaded H-bridge module using a single direct current
(DC) source in order to generate an 11-level output voltage. The
noble approach reduces the number of switches and gate drivers, in
comparison with a conventional method. The anticipated topology
produces more accurate result with an isolation transformer at high
switching frequency. Different modulation techniques can be used for
the multilevel inverter, but this work features modulation techniques
known as selective harmonic elimination (SHE).This modulation
approach reduces the number of carriers with reduction in Switching
Losses, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), and thereby increasing
Power Quality (PQ). Based on the simulation result obtained, it
appears SHE has the ability to eliminate selected harmonics by
chopping off the fundamental output component. The performance
evaluation of the proposed cascaded multilevel inverter is performed
using PSIM simulation package and THD of 0.94% is obtained.
Abstract: A bubbly flow in a vertical miniature tube is analyzed theoretically. The liquid and gas phase are co-current flowing upward. The gas phase is injected via a nozzle whose inner diameter is 0.11mm and it is placed on the axis of the tube. A force balance is applied on the bubble at its detachment. The set of governing equations are solved by use of Mathematica software. The bubble diameter and the bubble generation frequency are determined for various inlet phase velocities represented by the inlet mass quality. The results show different behavior of bubble growth and detachment depending on the tube size.
Abstract: This paper deals with the direct torque control (DTC) of the induction motor. This type of control allows decoupling control between the flux and the torque without the need for a transformation of coordinates. However, as with other hysteresis-based systems, the classical DTC scheme represents a high ripple, in both the electromagnetic torque and the stator flux and a distortion in the stator current. As well, it suffers from variable switching frequency. To solve these problems various modifications, in conventional DTC scheme, have been made during the last decade. Indeed the DTC based on space vector modulation (SVM) has proved to generate very low ripples in torque and flux with constant switching frequency. It also shows almost the same dynamic performances as the classical DTC system. On the other hand, fuzzy logic is considered as an interesting alternative approach for its advantages: Analysis close to the exigencies of user, ability of nonlinear systems control, best dynamic performances and inherent quality of robustness.
Therefore, two fuzzy direct torque control approaches, for the induction motor fed by SVM-voltage source inverter, are proposed in this paper. By using these two approaches of DTC, the advantages of fuzzy logic control, space vector modulation, and direct torque control method are combined. The performances of these DTC schemes are evaluated through digital simulation using Matlab/Simulink platform and fuzzy logic tools. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness and the superiority of the proposed Fuzzy DTC-SVM schemes in comparison to the classical DTC.
Abstract: PPARs function as regulators of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. The aim of the study was to compare the lipid profile between two phases of fasting and to examine the frequency and relationship of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, PPARα gene polymorphisms to lipid profile in fasting respondents. We conducted a case-control study protocol, which included 21 healthy volunteers without gender discrimination at the age of 18 years old. 3 ml of blood sample was drawn before the fasting phase and during the fasting phase (in Ramadhan month). 1ml of serum for the lipid profile was analyzed by using the automated chemistry analyser (Olympus, AU 400) and the data were analysed using the Paired T-Test (SPSS ver.20). DNA was extracted and PCR was conducted utilising 6 sets of primer. Primers were designed within 6 exons of interest in PPARα gene. Genetic and metabolic characteristics of fasting respondents and controls were estimated and compared. Fasting respondents were significantly have lowered the LDL levels (p=0.03). There were no polymorphisms detected except in exon 1 with 5% of this population study respectively. The polymorphisms in exon 1 of the PPARα gene were found in low frequency. Regarding the 1375G/T and 1386G/T polymorphisms in the exon 1 of the PPARα gene, the T-allele in fasting phase had no association with the decreased LDL levels (Fisher Exact Test). However this association is more promising when the sample size is larger in order to elucidate the precise impact of the polymorphisms on lipid profile in the population. In conclusion, the PPARα gene polymorphisms do not appear to affect the LDL of fasting respondents.
Abstract: Novel compact expressions for propagation constant (γ) of SWCNT and bundled SWCNTs interconnect, in terms of physical parameters such as length, operating frequency and diameter of CNTs is proposed in this work. These simplified expressions enable physical insight and accurate estimation of signal attenuation level and its phase change at any length for a particular frequency. The proposed expressions are validated against SPICE simulated results of lumped as well as distributed equivalent electrical RLC nets of CNT interconnect. These expressions also help us to evaluate the cut off frequencies of SWCNTs for different interconnect lengths.

The authors share their vast experience in the practical use of computer simulation for different induction heating and heat treating processes. In this paper treated with mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of induction heating furnaces with axisymmetric geometries for the numerical solution, we propose finite element methods combined with boundary (FEM) for the electromagnetic model using COMSOL® Multiphysics Software. Some numerical results for an industrial furnace are shown with high frequency.
Abstract: In order to study the free vibration of simply supported circular cylindrical shells; an analytical procedure is developed and discussed in detail. To identify its’ validity, the exact technique was applied to four different shell theories 1) Soedel, 2) Flugge, 3) Morley-Koiter, and 4) Donnell. The exact procedure was compared favorably with experimental results and those obtained using the numerical finite element method. A literature review reveals that beam functions are used extensively as an approximation for simply supported boundary conditions. The effects of this approximate method were also investigated on the natural frequencies by comparing results with those of the exact analysis.
Abstract: In this paper, a design of ultra wideband (UWB) printed microstrip antennas that fed by microstrip transmission line were presented and printed on a substrate Taconic TLY-5 material with relative dielectric constant of 2.2. The proposed antennas were designed to cover the frequency range of 3.5 to 12 GHz. The antennas of printed patch shapes are rectangular, triangle/rectangular, hexagonal, and circular with the same dimensions of feeder and ground plane. The proposed antennas were simulated using a package of CST microwave studio in the 2 to 12 GHz operating frequency range. Simulation results and comparison for return loss (S11), radiation patterns, and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) were presented and discussed over the UWB frequency.
Abstract: Sandwich plates are finding an increasing range of application in the aircraft industry. The inspection of honeycomb composite structure by conventional ultrasonic technique is complex and very time consuming. The present study demonstrates a technique using guided Lamb waves at low frequencies to predict de-bond defects in aluminum skin-honeycomb core sandwich structure used in aeronautics. The numerical method was investigated for drawing the dispersion and displacement curves of ultrasonic Lamb wave propagated in Aluminum plate. An experimental study was carried out to check the theoretical prediction. The detection of unsticking between the skin and the core was tested by the two first modes for a low frequency. It was found that A0 mode is more sensitive to delamination defect compared to S0 mode.
Abstract: This paper presents an effective technique for harmonic current mitigation using an adaptive notch filter (ANF) to estimate current harmonics. The proposed filter consists of multiple units of ANF connected in parallel structure; each unit is governed by two ordinary differential equations. The frequency estimation is carried out based on the output of these units. The simulation and experimental results show the ability of the proposed tracking scheme to accurately estimate harmonics. The proposed filter was implemented digitally in TMS320F2808 and used in the control of hybrid active power filter (HAPF). The theoretical expectations are verified and demonstrated experimentally.
Abstract: This paper presents a resonant-based read-out circuit for capacitive pressure sensors. The proposed read-out circuit consists of an LC oscillator and a counter. The circuit detects the capacitance changes of a capacitive pressure sensor by means of frequency shifts from its nominal operation frequency. The proposed circuit is designed in 0.18m CMOS with an estimated power consumption of 43.1mW. Simulation results show that the circuit has a capacitive resolution of 8.06kHz/fF, which enables it for high resolution pressure detection.
Abstract: Occurrence of a multiple-points fault in machine operations could result in exhibiting complex fault signatures, which could result in lowering fault diagnosis accuracy. In this study, a multiple-points defect model (MPDM) is proposed which can simulate fault signature-s dynamics for n-points bearing faults. Furthermore, this study identifies that in case of multiple-points fault in the rotary machine, the location of the dominant component of defect frequency shifts depending upon the relative location of the fault points which could mislead the fault diagnostic model to inaccurate detections. Analytical and experimental results are presented to characterize and validate the variation in the dominant component of defect frequency. Based on envelop detection analysis, a modification is recommended in the existing fault diagnostic models to consider the multiples of defect frequency rather than only considering the frequency spectrum at the defect frequency in order to incorporate the impact of multiple points fault.
Abstract: This paper presents the 20-GHz fractional PLL (Phase
Locked Loop) circuit for the next generation Wi-Fi by using 90 nm
TSMC process. The newly suggested millimeter wave 16/17
pre-scalar is designed and verified by measurement to make the
fractional PLL having a low quantization noise. The operational
bandwidth of the 60 GHz system is 15 % of the carrier frequency
which requires large value of Kv (VCO control gain) resulting in
degradation of phase noise. To solve this problem, this paper adopts
AFC (Automatic Frequency Controller) controlled 4-bit millimeter
wave VCO with small value of Kv. Also constant Kv is implemented
using 4-bit varactor bank. The measured operational bandwidth is 18.2
~ 23.2 GHz which is 25 % of the carrier frequency. The phase noise of
-58 and -96.2 dBc/Hz at 100 KHz and 1 MHz offset is measured
respectively. The total power consumption of the PLL is only 30 mW.
