Abstract: Design of compact UWB multilayered microstrip filter with E-shape resonator is presented, which provides wide stopband up to 20 GHz and arbitrary impedance matching. The design procedure is developed based on the method of least squares and theory of N-coupled transmission lines. The dimensions of designed filter are about 11 mm × 11 mm and the three E-shape resonators are placed among four dielectric layers. The average insertion loss in the passband is less than 1 dB and in the stopband is about 30 dB up to 20 GHz. Its group delay in the UWB region is about 0.5 ns. The performance of the optimized filter design perfectly agrees with the microwave simulation softwares.
Abstract: Power system security analysis is the most time demanding process due to large number of possible contingencies that need to be analyzed. In a power system, any contingency resulting in security violation such as line overload or low voltage may occur for a number of reasons at any time. To efficiently rank a contingency, both probability and the extent of security violation must be considered so as not to underestimate the risk associated with the contingency. This paper proposed a contingency ranking method that take into account the probabilistic nature of power system and the severity of contingency by using a newly developed method based on risk factor. The proposed technique is implemented on IEEE 24-bus system.
Abstract: Small scale hydropower used to play a very important role in the provision of energy to urban and rural areas of South Africa. The national electricity grid, however, expanded and offered cheap, coal generated electricity and a large number of hydropower systems were decommissioned. Unfortunately, large numbers of households and communities will not be connected to the national electricity grid for the foreseeable future due to high cost of transmission and distribution systems to remote communities due to the relatively low electricity demand within rural communities and the allocation of current expenditure on upgrading and constructing of new coal fired power stations. This necessitates the development of feasible alternative power generation technologies. A feasibility and implementation model was developed to assist in designing and financially evaluating small-scale hydropower (SSHP) plants. Several sites were identified using the model. The SSHP plants were designed for the selected sites and the designs for the different selected sites were priced using pricing models (civil, mechanical and electrical aspects). Following feasibility studies done on the designed and priced SSHP plants, a feasibility analysis was done and a design chart developed for future similar potential SSHP plant projects. The methodology followed in conducting the feasibility analysis for other potential sites consisted of developing cost and income/saving formulae, developing net present value (NPV) formulae, Capital Cost Comparison Ratio (CCCR) and levelised cost formulae for SSHP projects for the different types of plant installations. It included setting up a model for the development of a design chart for a SSHP, calculating the NPV, CCCR and levelised cost for the different scenarios within the model by varying different parameters within the developed formulae, setting up the design chart for the different scenarios within the model and analyzing and interpreting results. From the interpretation of the develop design charts for feasible SSHP in can be seen that turbine and distribution line cost are the major influences on the cost and feasibility of SSHP. High head, short transmission line and islanded mini-grid SSHP installations are the most feasible and that the levelised cost of SSHP is high for low power generation sites. The main conclusion from the study is that the levelised cost of SSHP projects indicate that the cost of SSHP for low energy generation is high compared to the levelised cost of grid connected electricity supply; however, the remoteness of SSHP for rural electrification and the cost of infrastructure to connect remote rural communities to the local or national electricity grid provides a low CCCR and renders SSHP for rural electrification feasible on this basis.
Abstract: There exist significant losses on transmission lines due to distance, as power generating stations could be located far from some isolated settlements. Standalone wind farms could be a good choice of alternative power generation for such settlements that are far from the grid due to factors of long distance or socio-economic problems. However, uncompensated wind farms consume reactive power since wind turbines are induction generators. Therefore, capacitor banks are used to compensate reactive power, which in turn improves the voltage profile of the network. Although capacitor banks help improving voltage profile, they also undergo switching actions due to its compensating response to the variation of various types of load at the consumer’s end. These switching activities could cause transient overvoltage on the network, jeopardizing the end-life of other equipment on the system. In this paper, the overvoltage caused by these switching activities is investigated using the IEEE bus 14-network to represent a standalone wind farm, and the simulation is done using ATP/EMTP software. Scenarios involving the use of pre-insertion resistor and pre-insertion inductor, as well as controlled switching was also carried out in order to decide the best mitigation option to reduce the overvoltage.
Abstract: In this study, spatial differences of Power Transmission Line (PTL) and effects of the situation before and after the urban regeneration are studied by using Geographical Information System (GIS). In addition, a questionable and analyzable structure is acquired by developed system. In the study area many parcels on the PTL were analyzed. The amount of the parcels, which are affected by the negativity of PTL is clearly seen with the aid of generated maps. Some kind of changes are exhibited in the system, which are created by GIS, for instance before urban regeneration PTL was very close to people’s private properties and huge parts of PTL were among the buildings, however; after urban regeneration electricity lines were changed their locations to the underground. According to the results, GIS can be used as a device in planning and managing of PTL in urban regeneration projects and can be used for analyses. By the help of GIS technology, necessary investigations should be carried out in urban regeneration applications for creating sustainable cities.
Abstract: CRLH (composite right/left-handed) based and SRR (split-ring resonator) based filters have been designed at microwave frequency which can provide better performance compared to conventional edge-coupled band-pass filter designed around the same frequency, 2.45 GHz. Both CRLH and SRR are unit cells used in metamaterial design. The primary aim of designing filters with such structures is to realize size reduction and also to realize novel filter performance. The CRLH based filter has been designed in microstrip transmission line, while the SRR based filter is designed with SRR loading in waveguide. The CRLH based filter designed at 2.45 GHz provides an insertion loss of 1.6 dB with harmonic suppression up to 10 GHz with 67 % size reduction when compared with a conventional edge-coupled band-pass filter designed around the same frequency. One dimensional (1-D) SRR matrix loaded in a waveguide shows the possibility of realizing a stop-band with sharp skirts in the pass-band while a stop-band in the pass-band of normal rectangular waveguide with tailoring of the dimensions of SRR unit cells. Such filters are expected to be very useful for communication systems at microwave frequency.
Abstract: The alternating current is the main power in all industries and other aspects especially for the short and mid distances, but as far as long a distance which exceeds 500 KMs, using the alternating current technically will face many difficulties and more costs because it's difficult to control the current and also other restrictions. Therefore, recently those reasons led to building transmission lines HVDC to transmit power for long distances. This document presents technical comparison and assessments for power transmission system among distances either ways and studying the stability of the system regarding the proportion of losses in the actual power sent and received between both sides in different systems and also categorizing filters used in the HVDC system and its impact and effect on reducing Harmonic in the power transmission. MATLAB /Simulink simulation software is used to simulate both HVAC & HVDC power transmission system topologies.
Abstract: The Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS)
technology is a new advanced solution that increases the reliability
and provides more flexibility, controllability, and stability of a power
system. The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC), as the most
versatile FACTS device for regulating power flow, is able to control
respectively transmission line real power, reactive power, and node
voltage. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of the
UPFC on the load flow, the power losses, and the voltage stability
using NEPLAN software modules, Newton-Raphson load flow is
used for the power flow analysis and the modal analysis is used for
the study of the voltage stability. The simulation was carried out on
the IEEE 14-bus test system.
Abstract: In this paper, a modified Wilkinson power divider for
GSM application is presented. The quarter–wavelength microstrip
lines in the conventional Wilkinson power divider (WPD) are
replaced by one-eighth wavelength transmission line. Wilkinson
power divider is designed using λ/4 and λ/8 transmission line. It has
the operating frequency of 915 MHz which is used in the GSM
standard. The proposed Wilkinson Power Divider is designed using
the simulation tool Advanced Design System. The results of λ/8
transmission line are very close to the results of λ/4 transmission line.
The isolation loss of λ/8 transmission line is improved by introducing
a capacitor between the output ports. The proposed Wilkinson power
divider has the best return loss of greater than -10 dB and isolation
loss of -15.25 dB. The λ/8 transmission line Wilkinson power divider
has the reduced size of 53.9 percentages than λ/4 transmission line
WPD. The proposed design has simple structure, better isolation loss
and good insertion loss.
Abstract: This paper presents a case study of using STATCOM to enhance the performance of Al-Qatraneh 33-kV transmission line. The location of the STATCOM was identified by maintaining minimum voltage drops at the 110 load nodes. The transmission line and the 110 load nodes have been modeled by MATLAB/Simulink. The suggested STATCOM and its location will increase the transmission capability of this transmission line and overcome the overload expected in the year 2020. The annual percentage loading rise has been considered as 14.35%. A graphical representation of the line-to-line voltages and the voltage drops at different load nodes is illustrated.
Abstract: This study and the field test comparisons were carried
out on the Algerian Derguna – Setif transmission systems. The
transmission line of normal voltage 225 kV is 65 km long,
transported and uses twin bundle conductors protected with two
shield wires of transposed galvanized steel. An iterative finite-element method is used to solve Poisons
equation. Two algorithms are proposed for satisfying the current
continuity condition and updating the space-charge density. A new approach to the problem of corona discharge in
transmission system has been described in this paper. The effect of
varying the configurations and wires number is also investigated. The
analysis of this steady is important in the design of HVDC
transmission lines. The potential and electric field have been
calculating in locations singular points of the system.
Abstract: The shielding ability of a shielding cavity with an
aperture will be greatly degraded at resonance frequencies, and the
resonance modes and frequencies are affected by aperture resonances
and aperture-cavity coupling, which are closely related with aperture
sizes. The equivalent circuit method and numerical method of
Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) are used to analyze the effects of
aperture resonances and aperture-cavity coupling on the
electromagnetic resonances of a cavity with an aperture in this paper.
Both analytical and numerical results show that the resonance modes
of a shielding cavity with an aperture consist of cavity resonance
modes and aperture resonance modes, and the resonance frequencies
will shift with the change of the aperture sizes because of the aperture
resonances and aperture-cavity coupling. Variation rules of
electromagnetic resonances with aperture sizes for a cavity with an
aperture are given, which will be useful for design of shielding
cavities.
Abstract: In this study, electric field distribution analyses for
three pylon models are carried out by a Finite Element Method
(FEM) based software. Analyses are performed in both stationary and
time domains to observe instantaneous values along with the
effective ones. Considering the results of the study, different line
geometries is considerably affecting the magnitude and distribution
of electric field although the line voltages are the same. Furthermore,
it is observed that maximum values of instantaneous electric field
obtained in time domain analysis are quite higher than the effective
ones in stationary mode. In consequence, electric field distribution
analyses should be individually made for each different line model
and the limit exposure values or distances to residential buildings
should be defined according to the results obtained.
Abstract: The use of hydroelectric pump-storage system at large
scale, MW-size systems, is already widespread around the world.
Designed for large scale applications, pump-storage station can be
scaled-down for small, remote residential applications. Given the cost
and complexity associated with installing a substation further than
100 miles from the main transmission lines, a remote, independent
and self-sufficient system is by far the most feasible solution. This
article is aiming at the design of wind and solar power generating
system, by means of pumped-storage to replace the wind and /or solar
power systems with a battery bank energy storage. Wind and solar
pumped-storage power generating system can reduce the cost of
power generation system, according to the user's electricity load and
resource condition and also can ensure system reliability of power
supply. Wind and solar pumped-storage power generation system is
well suited for remote residential applications with intermittent wind
and/or solar energy. This type of power systems, installed in these
locations, could be a very good alternative, with economic benefits
and positive social effects. The advantage of pumped storage power
system, where wind power regulation is calculated, shows that a
significant smoothing of the produced power is obtained, resulting in
a power-on-demand system’s capability, concomitant to extra
economic benefits.
Abstract: The coaxial transformer-coupled push-pull circuitry
has been used widely in HF and VHF amplifiers for many decades
without significant changes in the topology of the transformers. Basic
changes over the years concerned the construction and turns ratio of
the transformers as has been imposed upon the newer technologies
active devices demands. The balun transmission line transformers
applied in push-pull amplifiers enable input/output impedance
transformation, but are mainly used to convert the balanced output
into unbalanced and the input unbalanced into balanced. A simple
and affordable alternative solution over the traditional coaxial
transformer is the coreless planar balun. A key advantage over the
traditional approach lies in the high specifications repeatability;
simplifying the amplifier construction requirements as the planar
balun constitutes an integrated part of the PCB copper layout. This
paper presents the performance analysis of a planar LDMOS
MRFE6VP5600 Push-Pull amplifier that enables robust operation in
Band III, DVB-T, DVB-T2 standards but functions equally well in
Band II, for DRM+ new generation transmitters.
Abstract: Crosstalk among interconnects and printed-circuit
board (PCB) traces is a major limiting factor of signal quality in highspeed
digital and communication equipments especially when fast
data buses are involved. Such a bus is considered as a planar
multiconductor transmission line. This paper will demonstrate how
the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method provides an exact
solution of the transmission-line equations to analyze the near end
and the far end crosstalk. In addition, this study makes it possible to
analyze the rise time effect on the near and far end voltages of the
victim conductor. The paper also discusses a statistical analysis,
based upon a set of several simulations. Such analysis leads to a
better understanding of the phenomenon and yields useful
information.
Abstract: Today’s VLSI networks demands for high speed. And
in this work the compact form mathematical model for current mode
signalling in VLSI interconnects is presented.RLC interconnect line
is modelled using characteristic impedance of transmission line and
inductive effect. The on-chip inductance effect is dominant at lower
technology node is emulated into an equivalent resistance. First order
transfer function is designed using finite difference equation, Laplace
transform and by applying the boundary conditions at the source and
load termination. It has been observed that the dominant pole
determines system response and delay in the proposed model. The
novel proposed current mode model shows superior performance as
compared to voltage mode signalling. Analysis shows that current
mode signalling in VLSI interconnects provides 2.8 times better
delay performance than voltage mode. Secondly the damping factor
of a lumped RLC circuit is shown to be a useful figure of merit.
Abstract: A compact UWB planar antenna fed with a
microstrip-line is proposed. The new design consist of a rectangular
patch with symmetric l-shaped slots and fed by 50 Ω microstrip
transmission line and a reduced ground-plane which have a periodic
slots with an overall size of 47 mm x 20 mm. It is intended to be used
in wireless applications that cover the ultra-wideband (UWB)
frequency band. A wider impedance bandwidth of around 116.5%
(1.875 – 7.115 GHz) with stable radiation pattern is achieved. The
proposed antenna has excellent characteristics, low profile and costeffective
compared to existing UWB antennas. The UWB antenna is
designed and analyzed using CST Microwave Studio in transient
mode to verify antenna parameters improvements.
Abstract: Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCFs) can be used in optical
communications as transmission lines. For this reason, the PCFs with
low confinement loss, low chromatic dispersion, and low nonlinear
effects are highly suitable transmission media. In this paper, we
introduce a new design of index-guiding nanostructured photonic
crystal fiber (IG-NPCF) with ultra-low chromatic dispersion, low
nonlinearity effects, and low confinement loss. Relatively low
dispersion is achieved in the wavelength range of 1200 to 1600nm
using the proposed design. According to the new structure of
nanostructured PCF presented in this study, the chromatic dispersion
slope is -30(ps/km.nm) and the confinement loss reaches below 10-7
dB/km. While in the wavelength range mentioned above at the same
time an effective area of more than 50.2μm2 is obtained.
Abstract: Static VAR System (SVS) is a kind of FACTS device which is used in power system primarily for the purpose of voltage and reactive power control. In this paper presents a systematic approach for designing SVS supplementary controller, which is used to improve the damping of power system oscillation. The combined bus voltage and line current (CBVLC) supplementary controller has been developed and incorporated in the SVS control system located at the middle of the series compensated long transmission line. Damping of torsional stresses due to subsynchronous resonance resulting from series capacitive compensation using CBVLC is investigated in this paper. Simulation results are carried out with MATLAB/Simulink on the IEEE first benchmark model (FBM). The simulation results show that the oscillations are satisfactorily damped out by the SVS supplementary controller. Time domain simulation is performed on power system and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.
