Abstract: Among all geo-hydrological relationships, rainfallrunoff
relationship is of utmost importance in any hydrological
investigation and water resource planning. Spatial variation, lag time
involved in obtaining areal estimates for the basin as a whole can
affect the parameterization in design stage as well as in planning
stage. In conventional hydrological processing of data, spatial aspect
is either ignored or interpolated at sub-basin level. Temporal
variation when analysed for different stages can provide clues for its
spatial effectiveness. The interplay of space-time variation at pixel
level can provide better understanding of basin parameters.
Sustenance of design structures for different return periods and their
spatial auto-correlations should be studied at different geographical
scales for better management and planning of water resources.
In order to understand the relative effect of spatio-temporal
variation in hydrological data network, a detailed geo-hydrological
analysis of Betwa river catchment falling in Lower Yamuna Basin is
presented in this paper. Moreover, the exact estimates about the
availability of water in the Betwa river catchment, especially in the
wake of recent Betwa-Ken linkage project, need thorough scientific
investigation for better planning. Therefore, an attempt in this
direction is made here to analyse the existing hydrological and
meteorological data with the help of SPSS, GIS and MS-EXCEL
software. A comparison of spatial and temporal correlations at subcatchment
level in case of upper Betwa reaches has been made to
demonstrate the representativeness of rain gauges. First, flows at
different locations are used to derive correlation and regression
coefficients. Then, long-term normal water yield estimates based on
pixel-wise regression coefficients of rainfall-runoff relationship have
been mapped. The areal values obtained from these maps can
definitely improve upon estimates based on point-based
extrapolations or areal interpolations.
Abstract: In a state-of-the-art industrial production line of
photovoltaic products the handling and automation processes are of
particular importance and implication. While processing a fully
functional crystalline solar cell an as-cut photovoltaic wafer is subject
to numerous repeated handling steps. With respect to stronger
requirements in productivity and decreasing rejections due to defects
the mechanical stress on the thin wafers has to be reduced to a
minimum as the fragility increases by decreasing wafer thicknesses.
In relation to the increasing wafer fragility, researches at the
Fraunhofer Institutes IPA and CSP showed a negative correlation
between multiple handling processes and the wafer integrity. Recent
work therefore focused on the analysis and optimization of the dry
wafer stack separation process with compressed air. The achievement
of a wafer sensitive process capability and a high production
throughput rate is the basic motivation in this research.

Abstract: Medical images require special safety and confidentiality because critical judgment is done on the information provided by medical images. Transmission of medical image via internet or mobile phones demands strong security and copyright protection in telemedicine applications. Here, highly secured and robust watermarking technique is proposed for transmission of image data via internet and mobile phones. The Region of Interest (ROI) and Non Region of Interest (RONI) of medical image are separated. Only RONI is used for watermark embedding. This technique results in exact recovery of watermark with standard medical database images of size 512x512, giving 'correlation factor' equals to 1. The correlation factor for different attacks like noise addition, filtering, rotation and compression ranges from 0.90 to 0.95. The PSNR with weighting factor 0.02 is up to 48.53 dBs. The presented scheme is non blind and embeds hospital logo of 64x64 size.
Abstract: Salinity is a measure of the amount of salts in the
water. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) as salinity parameter are often
determined using laborious and time consuming laboratory tests, but
it may be more appropriate and economical to develop a method
which uses a more simple soil salinity index. Because dissolved ions
increase salinity as well as conductivity, the two measures are
related. The aim of this research was determine of constant
coefficients for predicting of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) based on
Electrical Conductivity (EC) with Statistics of Correlation
coefficient, Root mean square error, Maximum error, Mean Bias
error, Mean absolute error, Relative error and Coefficient of residual
mass. For this purpose, two experimental areas (S1, S2) of Khuzestan
province-IRAN were selected and four treatments with three
replications by series of double rings were applied. The treatments
were included 25cm, 50cm, 75cm and 100cm water application. The
results showed the values 16.3 & 12.4 were the best constant
coefficients for predicting of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) based on
EC in Pilot S1 and S2 with correlation coefficient 0.977 & 0.997 and
191.1 & 106.1 Root mean square errors (RMSE) respectively.
Abstract: this article conducts a research about the relationship between cash dividend policy and enterprise value based on the data coming from the A-share listed companies over period 2005-2009. In conclusion, the enterprise value has a negative correlation with the incremental and the degressive cash dividend per share, and has a positive correlation with the stable cash dividend per share.
Abstract: Direction of Arrival estimation refers to defining a mathematical function called a pseudospectrum that gives an indication of the angle a signal is impinging on the antenna array. This estimation is an efficient method of improving the quality of service in a communication system by focusing the reception and transmission only in the estimated direction thereby increasing fidelity with a provision to suppress interferers. This improvement is largely dependent on the performance of the algorithm employed in the estimation. Many DOA algorithms exists amongst which are MUSIC, Root-MUSIC and ESPRIT. In this paper, performance of these three algorithms is analyzed in terms of complexity, accuracy as assessed and characterized by the CRLB and memory requirements in various environments and array sizes. It is found that the three algorithms are high resolution and dependent on the operating environment and the array size.
Abstract: This study investigated the relationships between the
active learning strategies (discussion, video clips, game show, role–
play, five minute paper, clarification pauses, and small group) and
academic achievement among a sample of 158 undergraduate
psychology students in The University of the West Indies (UWI),
Barbados. Results revealed statistically significant positive
correlations between active learning strategies and students’
academic achievement; so also the active learning strategies
contributed 22% (Rsq=0.222) to the variance being accounted for in
academic achievement and this was found to be statistically
significant (F(7,150) = 6.12, p < .05). Additionally, group work
emerged as the best active learning strategy and had the highest
correlation with the students’ academic achievement. These results
were discussed in the light of the importance of the active learning
strategies promoting academic achievement among the university
students.
Abstract: The design of a steam turbine is a very complex
engineering operation that can be simplified and improved thanks to
computer-aided multi-objective optimization. This process makes use
of existing optimization algorithms and losses correlations to identify
those geometries that deliver the best balance of performance (i.e.
Pareto-optimal points).
This paper deals with a one-dimensional multi-objective and
multi-point optimization of a single-stage steam turbine. Using a
genetic optimization algorithm and an algebraic one-dimensional
ideal gas-path model based on loss and deviation correlations, a code
capable of performing the optimization of a predefined steam turbine
stage was developed. More specifically, during this study the
parameters modified (i.e. decision variables) to identify the best
performing geometries were solidity and angles both for stator and
rotor cascades, while the objective functions to maximize were totalto-
static efficiency and specific work done.
Finally, an accurate analysis of the obtained results was carried
out.
Abstract: In this manuscript, a wavelet-based blind
watermarking scheme has been proposed as a means to provide
security to authenticity of a fingerprint. The information used for
identification or verification of a fingerprint mainly lies in its
minutiae. By robust watermarking of the minutiae in the fingerprint
image itself, the useful information can be extracted accurately even
if the fingerprint is severely degraded. The minutiae are converted in
a binary watermark and embedding these watermarks in the detail
regions increases the robustness of watermarking, at little to no
additional impact on image quality. It has been experimentally shown
that when the minutiae is embedded into wavelet detail coefficients
of a fingerprint image in spread spectrum fashion using a
pseudorandom sequence, the robustness is observed to have a
proportional response while perceptual invisibility has an inversely
proportional response to amplification factor “K". The DWT-based
technique has been found to be very robust against noises,
geometrical distortions filtering and JPEG compression attacks and is
also found to give remarkably better performance than DCT-based
technique in terms of correlation coefficient and number of erroneous
minutiae.
Abstract: The paper presents a one-dimensional transient
mathematical model of compressible thermal multi-component gas
mixture flows in pipes. The set of the mass, momentum and enthalpy
conservation equations for gas phase is solved. Thermo-physical
properties of multi-component gas mixture are calculated by solving
the Equation of State (EOS) model. The Soave-Redlich-Kwong
(SRK-EOS) model is chosen. Gas mixture viscosity is calculated on
the basis of the Lee-Gonzales-Eakin (LGE) correlation. Numerical
analysis on rapid decompression in conventional dry gases is
performed by using the proposed mathematical model. The model is
validated on measured values of the decompression wave speed in
dry natural gas mixtures. All predictions show excellent agreement
with the experimental data at high and low pressure. The presented
model predicts the decompression in dry natural gas mixtures much
better than GASDECOM and OLGA codes, which are the most
frequently-used codes in oil and gas pipeline transport service.
Abstract: In the present work an investigation of the effects of
the air frontal velocity, relative humidity and dry air temperature on
the heat transfer characteristics of plain finned tube evaporator has
been conducted. Using an appropriate correlation for the air side heat
transfer coefficient the temperature distribution along the fin surface
was calculated using a dimensionless temperature distribution. For a
constant relative humidity and bulb temperature, it is found that the
temperature distribution decreases with increasing air frontal
velocity. Apparently, it is attributed to the condensate water film
flowing over the fin surface. When dry air temperature and face
velocity are being kept constant, the temperature distribution
decreases with the increase of inlet relative humidity. An increase in
the inlet relative humidity is accompanied by a higher amount of
moisture on the fin surface. This results in a higher amount of latent
heat transfer which involves higher fin surface temperature. For the
influence of dry air temperature, the results here show an increase in
the dimensionless temperature parameter with a decrease in bulb
temperature. Increasing bulb temperature leads to higher amount of
sensible and latent heat transfer when other conditions remain
constant.
Abstract: The present paper reports the removal of Cd(II) and
Zn(II) ions using synthetic Zeolit NaA. The adsorption capacity of
the sorbent (Zeolite NaA) strongly depends on simultaneous or not
simultaneous (concurrent) presence of Cd(II) and Zn(II) in the
sorbate. When Cd(II) and Zn(II) are present simultaneously
(concurrently) in the sorbate, Zn(II) ions were sorbed at higher rate.
Equilibrium data fitted Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin isotherms
well. The applicability of the isotherm equation to describe the
adsorption process was judged by the correlation coefficients R2. The
Langmuir model yielded the best fit with R2 values equal to or higher
than 0.970, as compared to the Freundlich and Tempkin models. The
fact that 1/n values range from 0.322 to 0.755 indicates that the
adsorption of Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions from aqueous solutions also
favored by the Freundlich model.
Abstract: In this paper, a novel contrast enhancement technique
for contrast enhancement of a low-contrast satellite image has been
proposed based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) and
discrete cosine transform (DCT). The singular value matrix
represents the intensity information of the given image and any
change on the singular values change the intensity of the input image.
The proposed technique converts the image into the SVD-DCT
domain and after normalizing the singular value matrix; the enhanced
image is reconstructed by using inverse DCT. The visual and
quantitative results suggest that the proposed SVD-DCT method
clearly shows the increased efficiency and flexibility of the proposed
method over the exiting methods such as Linear Contrast Stretching
technique, GHE technique, DWT-SVD technique, DWT technique,
Decorrelation Stretching technique, Gamma Correction method
based techniques.
Abstract: Fake finger submission attack is a major problem in fingerprint recognition systems. In this paper, we introduce an aliveness detection method based on multiple static features, which derived from a single fingerprint image. The static features are comprised of individual pore spacing, residual noise and several first order statistics. Specifically, correlation filter is adopted to address individual pore spacing. The multiple static features are useful to reflect the physiological and statistical characteristics of live and fake fingerprint. The classification can be made by calculating the liveness scores from each feature and fusing the scores through a classifier. In our dataset, we compare nine classifiers and the best classification rate at 85% is attained by using a Reduced Multivariate Polynomial classifier. Our approach is faster and more convenient for aliveness check for field applications.
Abstract: The network traffic data provided for the design of
intrusion detection always are large with ineffective information and
enclose limited and ambiguous information about users- activities.
We study the problems and propose a two phases approach in our
intrusion detection design. In the first phase, we develop a
correlation-based feature selection algorithm to remove the worthless
information from the original high dimensional database. Next, we
design an intrusion detection method to solve the problems of
uncertainty caused by limited and ambiguous information. In the
experiments, we choose six UCI databases and DARPA KDD99
intrusion detection data set as our evaluation tools. Empirical studies
indicate that our feature selection algorithm is capable of reducing the
size of data set. Our intrusion detection method achieves a better
performance than those of participating intrusion detectors.
Abstract: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is frequently characterized by
autonomic nervous dysfunction. Analysis of heart rate variability
(HRV) has become a popular noninvasive tool for assessing the
activities of autonomic nervous system (ANS). In this paper, changes
in ANS activity are quantified by means of frequency and time
domain analysis of R-R interval variability. Electrocardiograms
(ECG) of 16 patients suffering from DM and of 16 healthy volunteers
were recorded. Frequency domain analysis of extracted normal to
normal interval (NN interval) data indicates significant difference in
very low frequency (VLF) power, low frequency (LF) power and
high frequency (HF) power, between the DM patients and control
group. Time domain measures, standard deviation of NN interval
(SDNN), root mean square of successive NN interval differences
(RMSSD), successive NN intervals differing more than 50 ms (NN50
Count), percentage value of NN50 count (pNN50), HRV triangular
index and triangular interpolation of NN intervals (TINN) also show
significant difference between the DM patients and control group.
Abstract: The use of a Bayesian Hierarchical Model (BHM) to interpret breath measurements obtained during a 13C Octanoic Breath Test (13COBT) is demonstrated. The statistical analysis was implemented using WinBUGS, a commercially available computer package for Bayesian inference. A hierarchical setting was adopted where poorly defined parameters associated with a delayed Gastric Emptying (GE) were able to "borrow" strength from global distributions. This is proved to be a sufficient tool to correct model's failures and data inconsistencies apparent in conventional analyses employing a Non-linear least squares technique (NLS). Direct comparison of two parameters describing gastric emptying ng ( tlag -lag phase, t1/ 2 -half emptying time) revealed a strong correlation between the two methods. Despite our large dataset ( n = 164 ), Bayesian modeling was fast and provided a successful fitting for all subjects. On the contrary, NLS failed to return acceptable estimates in cases where GE was delayed.
Abstract: Panoramic view generation has always offered
novel and distinct challenges in the field of image processing.
Panoramic view generation is nothing but construction of bigger
view mosaic image from set of partial images of the desired view.
The paper presents a solution to one of the problems of image
seascape formation where some of the partial images are color and
others are grayscale. The simplest solution could be to convert all
image parts into grayscale images and fusing them to get grayscale
image panorama. But in the multihued world, obtaining the colored
seascape will always be preferred. This could be achieved by picking
colors from the color parts and squirting them in grayscale parts of
the seascape. So firstly the grayscale image parts should be colored
with help of color image parts and then these parts should be fused to
construct the seascape image.
The problem of coloring grayscale images has no exact solution.
In the proposed technique of panoramic view generation, the job of
transferring color traits from reference color image to grayscale
image is done by palette based method. In this technique, the color
palette is prepared using pixel windows of some degrees taken from
color image parts. Then the grayscale image part is divided into pixel
windows with same degrees. For every window of grayscale image
part the palette is searched and equivalent color values are found,
which could be used to color grayscale window. For palette
preparation we have used RGB color space and Kekre-s LUV color
space. Kekre-s LUV color space gives better quality of coloring. The
searching time through color palette is improved over the exhaustive
search using Kekre-s fast search technique.
After coloring the grayscale image pieces the next job is fusion of
all these pieces to obtain panoramic view. For similarity estimation
between partial images correlation coefficient is used.
