Abstract: Microbubbbles incorporating ultrasound have been used to increase the efficacy of targeted drug delivery, because microstreaming induced by cavitating bubbles affects the drug perfusion into the target cells and tissues. In order to clarify the physical effects of microstreaming on drug perfusion into tissues, a preliminary experimental study of perfusion enhancement by a stably oscillating microbubble was performed. Microstreaming was induced by an oscillating bubble at 15 kHz, and perfusion of dye into an agar phantom was optically measured by histology on agar phantom. Surface color intensity and the penetration length of dye in the agar phantom were increased more than 70% and 30%, respectively, due to the microstreaming induced by an oscillating bubble. The mass of dye perfused into a tissue phantom for 30 s was increased about 80% in the phantom with an oscillating bubble. This preliminary experiment shows the physical effects of steady streaming by an oscillating bubble can enhance the drug perfusion into the tissues while minimizing the biological effects.
Abstract: This paper focuses on the use of project work as a
pretext for applying the conventions of writing, or the correctness of
mechanics, usage, and sentence formation, in a content-based class in
a Rajabhat University. Its aim was to explore to what extent the
student teachers’ academic achievement of the basic writing features
against the 70% attainment target after the use of project is. The
organization of work around an agreed theme in which the students
reproduce language provided by texts and instructors is expected to
enhance students’ correct writing conventions. The sample of the
study comprised of 38 fourth-year English major students. The data
was collected by means of achievement test and student writing
works. The scores in the summative achievement test were analyzed
by mean score, standard deviation, and percentage. It was found that
the student teachers do more achieve of practicing mechanics and
usage, and less in sentence formation. The students benefited from
the exposure to texts during conducting the project; however, their
automaticity of how and when to form phrases and clauses into
simple/complex sentences had room for improvement.
Abstract: Despite the relatively large number of studies that
have examined the use of appeals in advertisements, research on the
use of appeals in green advertisements is still underdeveloped and
needs to be investigated further, as it is definitely a tool for marketers
to create illustrious ads. In this study, content analysis was employed
to examine the nature of green advertising appeals and to match the
appeals with the green advertisements. Two different types of green
print advertisings, product orientation and organizational image
orientation were used. Thirty highly educated participants with
different backgrounds were asked individually to ascertain three
appeals out of thirty-four given appeals found among forty real green
advertisements. To analyze participant responses and to group them
based on common appeals, two-step K-mean clustering is used. The
clustering solution indicates that eye-catching graphics and
imaginative appeals are highly notable in both types of green ads.
Depressed, meaningful and sad appeals are found to be highly used in
organizational image orientation ads, whereas, corporate image,
informative and natural appeals are found to be essential for product
orientation ads.
Abstract: The modified Claus process is commonly used in oil
refining and gas processing to recover sulfur and destroy
contaminants formed in upstream processing. A Claus furnace feed
containing a relatively low concentration of H2S may be incapable of
producing a stable flame. Also, incomplete combustion of
hydrocarbons in the feed can lead to deterioration of the catalyst in
the reactors due to soot or carbon deposition. Therefore, special
consideration is necessary to achieve the appropriate overall sulfur
recovery. In this paper, some configurations available to treat lean
acid gas streams are described and the most appropriate ones are
studied to overcome low H2S concentration problems. As a result,
overall sulfur recovery is investigated for feed preheating and hot gas
configurations.
Abstract: Application of pesticides in the paddy fields has
deleterious effects on non-target organisms including cyanobacteria
which are photosynthesizing and nitrogen fixing micro-organisms
contributing significantly towards soil fertility and crop yield.
Pesticide contamination in the paddy fields has manifested into a
serious global environmental concern. To study the effect of one such
pesticide, three cyanobacterial strains; Anabaena fertilissima,
Aulosira fertilissima and Westiellopsis prolifica were selected for
their stress responses to an Organochlorine insecticide - 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
10-hexachloro-1, 5, 5a, 6, 9, 9a-hexahydro-6, 9-methano-2, 4, 3-
benzodioxathiepine-3-oxide, with reference to their photosynthesic
pigments-chlorophyll-a and carotenoids as well as accessory
pigments-phycobiliproteins (phycocyanin, allophycocyanin and
phycoerythrin), stress induced biochemical metabolites like
carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, phenols and enzymes-nitrate
reductase, glutamine synthetase and succinate dehydrogenase. All
the three cyanobacterial strains were adversely affected by the
insecticide doses and inhibition was dose dependent. Reduction in
photosynthetic and accessory pigments, metabolites, nitrogen fixing
and respiratory enzymes of the test organisms were accompanied
with an initial increase in their total protein at lower Organochlorine
doses. On the other hand, increased amount of phenols in all the
insecticide treated concentrations was indicative of stressed activities
of the organisms.
Abstract: Due to the legacy of apartheid segregation South Africa remains a divided society where most voters live in politically homogenous social environments. This paper argues that political discussion within one’s social context plays a primary role in shaping political attitudes and vote choice. Using data from the Comparative National Elections Project 2004 and 2009 South African post-election surveys, the paper explores the extent of social context partisan homogeneity in South Africa and finds that voters are not overly embedded in homogenous social contexts. It then demonstrates the consequences of partisan homogeneity on voting behavior. Homogenous social contexts tend to encourage stronger partisan loyalties and fewer defections in vote choice while voters in more heterogeneous contexts show less consistency in their attitudes and behaviour. Finally, the analysis shows how momentous sociopolitical events at the time of a particular election can change the social context, with important consequences for electoral outcomes.
Abstract: Cyprus- offshore aquaculture industry has promising
prospects taking into account that Cyprus is an island. Its production
trend is increasing overtaking bigger countries such Greece and Italy.
However, current mooring systems seem to be under-performing
acting as obstacles for its future development. Furthermore, shallow
coastal waters scarcity due to competing industries dictates future
development to come by moving further from shore exposing fish
farms and subsequently mooring systems to harsher environmental
loadings. It is, therefore, of paramount importance to design mooring
systems based on engineering and scientific principles and leave
behind the present “trial and error" methods. This paper presents the
current state of Cyprus- offshore aquaculture industry and focuses of
its mooring designs by proposing a new methodology for designing
more reliable systems, hence ensuring its future.
Abstract: Most real world systems express themselves formally
as a set of nonlinear algebraic equations. As applications grow, the
size and complexity of these equations also increase. In this work, we
highlight the key concepts in using the homotopy analysis method
as a methodology used to construct efficient iteration formulas for
nonlinear equations solving. The proposed method is experimentally
characterized according to a set of determined parameters which
affect the systems. The experimental results show the potential and
limitations of the new method and imply directions for future work.
Abstract: The Želazny Most tailing pond is one of the largest
facilities worldwide for waste disposal from the copper mines located
in South-West Poland. A potential failure of the dam would allow
more than 10 million cubic meters of contaminated slurry to flow to
the valley, causing immense environmental problems to the
surrounding area. Thus, the determination of the strength properties
of the dam's soils and their variability is of utmost importance.
An extensive site investigation consisting of more than 480 cone
penetration tests (CPTs) with or without pore water pressure
measurements were conducted within a period of 13 years to study
the mechanical properties of the tailings body. The present work
investigates the point variability of the soil strength parameters
(effective friction angle
Abstract: This paper introduces the application of seismic wave method in earthquake prediction and early estimation. The advantages of the seismic wave method over the traditional earthquake prediction method are demonstrated. An example is presented in this study to show the accuracy and efficiency of using the seismic wave method in predicting a medium-sized earthquake swarm occurred in Wencheng, Zhejiang, China. By applying this method, correct predictions were made on the day after this earthquake swarm started and the day the maximum earthquake occurred, which provided scientific bases for governmental decision-making.
Abstract: Transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) is a basic part of power system planning that determines where, when and how many new transmission lines should be added to the network. Up till now, various methods have been presented to solve the static transmission network expansion planning (STNEP) problem. But in all of these methods, lines adequacy rate has not been considered at the end of planning horizon, i.e., expanded network misses adequacy after some times and needs to be expanded again. In this paper, expansion planning has been implemented by merging lines loading parameter in the STNEP and inserting investment cost into the fitness function constraints using genetic algorithm. Expanded network will possess a maximum adequacy to provide load demand and also the transmission lines overloaded later. Finally, adequacy index could be defined and used to compare some designs that have different investment costs and adequacy rates. In this paper, the proposed idea has been tested on the Garvers network. The results show that the network will possess maximum efficiency economically.
Abstract: Nowadays, manufacturers are facing great challenges
with regard to the production of green products due to the emerging issue of hazardous substance management (HSM). In particular,
environmental legislation pressures have yielded to increased risk,
manufacturing complexity and green components demands. The green principles were expanded to many departments within
organization, including supply chain. Green supply chain
management (GSCM) was emerging in the last few years. This idea
covers every stage in manufacturing from the first to the last stage of
life cycle. From product lifecycle concept, the cycle starts at the design of a product. QFD is a customer-driven product development
tool, considered as a structured management approach for efficiently
translating customer needs into design requirements and parts deployment, as well as manufacturing plans and controls in order to
achieve higher customer satisfaction. This paper develops an Eco-
QFD to provide a framework for designing Eco-mobile phone by integrating the life cycle analysis LCA into QFD throughout the entire product development process.
Abstract: In this article, LQR based PID controller design for
3DOF helicopter system is investigated. The 3-DOF helicopter
system is a benchmark laboratory model having strongly nonlinear
characteristics and unstable dynamics which make the control of such
system a challenging task. This article first presents the mathematical
model of the 3DOF helicopter system and then illustrates the basic
idea and technical formulation for controller design. The paper
explains the simple approach for the approximation of PID design
parameters from the LQR controller gain matrix. The simulation
results show that the investigated controller has both static and
dynamic performance, therefore the stability and the quick control
effect can be obtained simultaneously for the 3DOF helicopter
system.
Abstract: Realistic 3D face model is more precise in representing
pose, illumination, and expression of face than 2D face model so that it
can be utilized usefully in various applications such as face recognition,
games, avatars, animations, and etc.
In this paper, we propose a 3D face modeling method based on 3D
dense morphable shape model. The proposed 3D modeling method
first constructs a 3D dense morphable shape model from 3D face scan
data obtained using a 3D scanner. Next, the proposed method extracts
and matches facial landmarks from 2D image sequence containing a
face to be modeled, and then reconstructs 3D vertices coordinates of
the landmarks using a factorization-based SfM technique. Then, the
proposed method obtains a 3D dense shape model of the face to be
modeled by fitting the constructed 3D dense morphable shape model
into the reconstructed 3D vertices. Also, the proposed method makes a
cylindrical texture map using 2D face image sequence. Finally, the
proposed method generates a 3D face model by rendering the 3D dense
face shape model using the cylindrical texture map. Through building
processes of 3D face model by the proposed method, it is shown that
the proposed method is relatively easy, fast and precise.
Abstract: In this paper, an analysis of a target location estimation
system using the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) for high
performance radar systems is presented. In synthetic environments,
we are here concerned with three key elements of radar system
modeling, which makes radar systems operates accurately in strategic
situation in virtual ground. Radar Cross Section (RCS) modeling
is used to determine the actual amount of electromagnetic waves
that are reflected from a tactical object. Pattern Propagation Factor
(PPF) is an attenuation coefficient of the radar equation that contains
the reflection from the surface of the earth, the diffraction, the
refraction and scattering by the atmospheric environment. Clutter is
the unwanted echoes of electronic systems. For the data fusion of
output results from radar detection in synthetic environment, BLUE
is used and compared with the mean values of each simulation results.
Simulation results demonstrate the performance of the radar system.
Abstract: In this paper we introduce new data oriented modeling
of uniform random variable well-matched with computing systems. Due to this conformity with current computers structure, this modeling will be efficiently used in statistical inference.
Abstract: Facing the concern of the population to its environment and to climatic change, city planners are now considering the urban climate in their choices of planning. The urban climate, representing different urban morphologies across central Bangkok metropolitan area (BMA), are used to investigates the effects of both the composition and configuration of variables of urban morphology indicators on the summer diurnal range of urban climate, using correlation analyses and multiple linear regressions. Results show first indicate that approximately 92.6% of the variation in the average maximum daytime near-surface air temperature (Ta) was explained jointly by the two composition variables of urban morphology indicators including open space ratio (OSR) and floor area ratio (FAR). It has been possible to determine the membership of sample areas to the local climate zones (LCZs) using these urban morphology descriptors automatically computed with GIS and remote sensed data. Finally result found the temperature differences among zones of large separation, such as the city center could be respectively from 35.48±1.04ºC (Mean±S.D.) warmer than the outskirt of Bangkok on average for maximum daytime near surface temperature to 28.27±0.21ºC for extreme event and, can exceed as 8ºC. A spatially disaggregation of urban thermal responsiveness map would be helpful for several reasons. First, it would localize urban areas concerned by different climate behavior over summer daytime and be a good indicator of urban climate variability. Second, when overlaid with a land cover map, this map may contribute to identify possible urban management strategies to reduce heat wave effects in BMA.
Abstract: Plackett-Burman statistical screening of media
constituents and operational conditions for extracellular lipase
production from isolate Trichoderma viride has been carried out in
submerged fermentation. This statistical design is used in the early
stages of experimentation to screen out unimportant factors from a
large number of possible factors. This design involves screening of
up to 'n-1' variables in just 'n' number of experiments. Regression
coefficients and t-values were calculated by subjecting the
experimental data to statistical analysis using Minitab version 15.
The effects of nine process variables were studied in twelve
experimental trials. Maximum lipase activity of 7.83 μmol /ml /min
was obtained in the 6th trail. Pareto chart illustrates the order of
significance of the variables affecting the lipase production. The
present study concludes that the most significant variables affecting
lipase production were found to be palm oil, yeast extract, K2HPO4,
MgSO4 and CaCl2.
Abstract: Changing technology and increased constituent
demand for government services derive the need for governmental
responsiveness. The government organisations in the developing
countries will be under increased pressure to change their
bureaucratic systems to be able to respond rapidly to changing and
increasing requirements and rapid technology advancements. This
paper aims to present a conceptual framework for explaining the
main barriers and drivers of public e-service development. Therefore,
the framework provides a basic context within which the process and
practice of E-Service can be implemented successfully in the public
sector organisations. The framework is flexible enough to be adopted
by governments at different levels; national or local by developing
countries around the world.
Abstract: While in practice negotiation is always a mix of
cooperation and competition, these two elements correspond to
different approaches of the relationship and also different orientations
in term of strategy, techniques, tactics and arguments employed by
the negotiators with related effects and in the end leading to different
outcomes. The levels of honesty, trust and therefore cooperation are
influenced not only by the uncertainty of the situation, the objectives,
stakes or power but also by the orientation given from the very
beginning of the relationship. When negotiation is reduced to a
confrontation of power, participants rely on coercive measures, using
different kinds of threats or make false promises and bluff in order to
establish a more acceptable balance of power.
Most of the negotiators have a tendency to complain about the
unethical aspects of the tactics used by their counterparts while, as
the same time, they are mostly unaware of the sources of influence of
their own vision and practices. In this article, our intention is to
clarify these sources and try to understand what can lead negotiators
to unethical practices.
