Abstract: The Brazilian legislation has only established
diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) in terms of Multiple Scan
Average Dose (MSAD) as a quality control parameter for computed
tomography (CT) scanners. Compliance with DRLs can be verified
by measuring the Computed Tomography Kerma Index (Ca,100) with
a pencil ionization chamber or by obtaining the kerma distribution in
CT scans with radiochromic films or rod shape lithium fluoride
termoluminescent dosimeters (TLD-100). TL dosimeters were used
to record kerma profiles and to determine MSAD values of a Bright
Speed model GE CT scanner. Measurements were done with
radiochromic films and TL dosimeters distributed in cylinders
positioned in the center and in four peripheral bores of a standard
polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) body CT dosimetry phantom.
Irradiations were done using a protocol for adult chest. The
maximum values were found at the midpoint of the longitudinal axis.
The MSAD values obtained with three dosimetric techniques were
compared.
Abstract: The present study investigates numerically the
phenomenon of vortex-shedding and its suppression in twodimensional
mixed convective flow past a square cylinder under the
joint influence of buoyancy and free-stream orientation with respect
to gravity. The numerical experiments have been conducted at a
fixed Reynolds number (Re) of 100 and Prandtl number (Pr) of 0.71,
while Richardson number (Ri) is varied from 0 to 1.6 and freestream
orientation, α, is kept in the range 0o≤ α ≤ 90o, with 0o
corresponding to an upward flow and 90o representing a cross-flow
scenario, respectively. The continuity, momentum and energy
equations, subject to Boussinesq approximation, are discretized using
a finite difference method and are solved by a semi-explicit pressure
correction scheme. The critical Richardson number, leading to the
suppression of the vortex-shedding (Ric), is estimated by using
Stuart-Landau theory at various free-stream orientations and the
neutral curve is obtained in the Ri-α plane. The neutral curve
exhibits an interesting non-monotonic behavior with Ric first
increasing with increasing values of α upto 45o and then decreasing
till 70o. Beyond 70o, the neutral curve again exhibits a sharp
increasing asymptotic trend with Ric approaching very large values
as α approaches 90o. The suppression of vortex shedding is not
observed at α = 90o (cross-flow). In the unsteady flow regime, the
Strouhal number (St) increases with the increase in Richardson
number.
Abstract: The fine structure of supercavitation in the wake of a
symmetrical cylinder is studied with high-speed video cameras. The
flow is observed in a cavitation tunnel at the speed of 8m/sec when the
sidewall and the wake are partially filled with the massive cavitation
bubbles. The present experiment observed that a two-dimensional
ripple wave with a wave length of 0.3mm is propagated in a
downstream direction, and then abruptly increases to a thicker
three-dimensional layer. IR-photography recorded that the wakes
originated from the horseshoe vortexes alongside the cylinder. The
wake was developed to inside the dead water zone, which absorbed the
bubbly wake propelled from the separated vortices at the center of the
cylinder. A remote sensing classification technique (maximum most
likelihood) determined that the surface porosity was 0.2, and the mean
speed in the mixed wake was 7m/sec. To confirm the existence of
two-dimensional wave motions in the interface, the experiments were
conducted at a very low frequency, and showed similar gravity waves
in both the upper and lower interfaces.
Abstract: We studied the evolution of elliptic heavy SF6
gas cylinder surrounded by air when accelerated by a planar
Mach 1.25 shock. A multiple dynamics imaging technology has
been used to obtain one image of the experimental initial
conditions and five images of the time evolution of elliptic
cylinder. We compared the width and height of the circular and
two kinds of elliptic gas cylinders, and analyzed the vortex
strength of the elliptic ones. Simulations are in very good
agreement with the experiments, but due to the different initial
gas cylinder shapes, a certain difference of the initial density
peak and distribution exists between the circular and elliptic
gas cylinders, and the latter initial state is more sensitive and
more inenarrable.
Abstract: The transient thermoelastic response of thick hollow cylinder made of functionally graded material under thermal loading is studied. The generalized coupled thermoelasticity based on the Green-Lindsay model is used. The thermal and mechanical properties of the functionally graded material are assumed to be varied in the radial direction according to a power law variation as a function of the volume fractions of the constituents. The thermal and elastic governing equations are solved by using Galerkin finite element method. All the finite element calculations were done by using commercial finite element program FlexPDE. The transient temperature, radial displacement, and thermal stresses distribution through the radial direction of the cylinder are plotted.
Abstract: This paper presents the experimental results of a
single cylinder Enfield engine using an electronically controlled fuel
injection system which was developed to carry out exhaustive tests
using neat CNG, and mixtures of hydrogen in compressed natural gas
(HCNG) as 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% by energy. Experiments were
performed at 2000 and 2400 rpm with wide open throttle and varying
the equivalence ratio. Hydrogen which has fast burning rate, when
added to compressed natural gas, enhances its flame propagation rate.
The emissions of HC, CO, decreased with increasing percentage of
hydrogen but NOx was found to increase. The results indicated a
marked improvement in the brake thermal efficiency with the
increase in percentage of hydrogen added. The improved thermal
efficiency was clearly observed to be more in lean region as
compared to rich region. This study is expected to reduce vehicular
emissions along with increase in thermal efficiency and thus help in
reduction of further environmental degradation.
Abstract: This paper addresses one important aspect of
combustion system analysis, the spray evaporation and
dispersion modeling. In this study we assume an empty
cylinder which is as a simulator for a ramjet engine and the
cylinder has been studied by cold flow. Four nozzles have the
duties of injection which are located in the entrance of
cylinder. The air flow comes into the cylinder from one side
and injection operation will be done. By changing injection
velocity and entrance air flow velocity, we have studied
droplet sizing and efficient mass fraction of fuel vapor near
and at the exit area. We named the mass of fuel vapor inside
the flammability limit as the efficient mass fraction. Further,
we decreased the initial temperature of fuel droplets and we
have repeated the investigating again. To fulfill the calculation
we used a modified version of KIVA-3V.
Abstract: PCCI engines can reduce NOx and PM emissions
simultaneously without sacrificing thermal efficiency, but a low
combustion temperature resulting from early fuel injection, and
ignition occurring prior to TDC, can cause higher THC and CO
emissions and fuel consumption. In conclusion, it was found that the
PCCI combustion achieved by the 2-stage injection strategy with
optimized calibration factors (e.g. EGR rate, injection pressure, swirl
ratio, intake pressure, injection timing) can reduce NOx and PM
emissions simultaneously. This research works are expected to
provide valuable information conducive to a development of an
innovative combustion engine that can fulfill upcoming stringent
emission standards.
Abstract: A large number of chemical, bio-chemical and pollution-control processes use heterogeneous fixed-bed reactors. The use of finite hollow cylindrical catalyst pellets can enhance conversion levels in such reactors. The absence of the pellet core can significantly lower the diffusional resistance associated with the solid phase. This leads to a better utilization of the catalytic material, which is reflected in the higher values for the effectiveness factor, leading ultimately to an enhanced conversion level in the reactor. It is however important to develop a rigorous heterogeneous model for the reactor incorporating the two-dimensional feature of the solid phase owing to the presence of the finite hollow cylindrical catalyst pellet. Presently, heterogeneous models reported in the literature invariably employ one-dimension solid phase models meant for spherical catalyst pellets. The objective of the paper is to present a rigorous model of the fixed-bed reactors containing finite hollow cylindrical catalyst pellets. The reaction kinetics considered here is the widely used Michaelis–Menten kinetics for the liquid-phase bio-chemical reactions. The reaction parameters used here are for the enzymatic degradation of urea. Results indicate that increasing the height to diameter ratio helps to improve the conversion level. On the other hand, decreasing the thickness is apparently not as effective. This could however be explained in terms of the higher void fraction of the bed that causes a smaller amount of the solid phase to be packed in the fixed-bed bio-chemical reactor.
Abstract: In this paper dynamics of a vapour bubble generated
due to a local energy input inside a vertical rigid cylinder and in the
absence of buoyancy forces is investigated. Different ratios of the
diameter of the rigid cylinder to the maximum radius of the bubble
are considered. The Boundary Integral Equation Method is employed
for numerical simulation of the problem. Results show that during
the collapse phase of the bubble inside a vertical rigid cylinder, two
liquid micro jets are developed on the top and bottom sides of the
vapour bubble and are directed inward. Results also show that
existence of a deposit rib inside the vertical rigid cylinder slightly
increases the life time of the bubble. It is found that by increasing the
ratio of the cylinder diameter to the maximum radius of the bubble,
the rate of the growth and collapse phases of the bubble increases
and the life time of the bubble decreases.
Abstract: Heterogeneous catalysis is vital for a number of
chemical, refinery and pollution control processes. The use of
catalyst pellets of hollow cylindrical shape provide several distinct
advantages over other common shapes, and can therefore help to
enhance conversion levels in reactors. A better utilization of the
catalytic material is probably most notable of these features due to
the absence of the pellet core, which helps to significantly lower the
effect of the internal transport resistance. This is reflected in the
enhancement of the effectiveness factor. For the case of the first order
irreversible kinetics, a substantial increase in the effectiveness factor
can be obtained by varying shape parameters. Important shape
parameters of a finite hollow cylinder are the ratio of the inside to the
outside radii (κ) and the height to the diameter ratio (γ). A high value
of κ the generally helps to enhance the effectiveness factor. On the
other hand, lower values of the effectiveness factors are obtained
when the dimension of the height and the diameter are comparable.
Thus, the departure of parameter γ from the unity favors higher
effectiveness factor. Since a higher effectiveness factor is a measure
of a greater utilization of the catalytic material, higher conversion
levels can be achieved using the hollow cylindrical pellets possessing
optimized shape parameters.
Abstract: Microstrip antennas are conformable to planar and
nonplanar surfaces, simple and inexpensive to fabricate using modern
printed-circuit technology. Circular polarization of low-profile
microstrip patch with high bandwidth is achieved in this research
through the use of a three-cross-arms branch-line coupler with
sequential rotated arrays, another low-profile antenna of hollow
cylinder is also proposed and the function of reconnaissance with
microstrip antenna on Mini UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) are
evaluated in practical flight test.
Abstract: An experimental and simulation flight test has been carried out to evaluate the longitudinal gliding characteristics of a lifting body with blunted half-cone geometry. The novelty here is the lifting body's pitch control mechanism, which consists of a pair of leading-edge rotating cylinders. Flight simulation uses aerodynamic data from computational fluid dynamics supported by wind-tunnel test. Flight test consists of releasing an aluminum lifting body model from a moving vehicle at the appropriate wind speed while measuring the lifting body's variation of altitude against time of flight. Results show that leading-edge rotating cylinder is able to give small amounts of improvement to the longitudinal stability and pitch control to the lifting body.
Abstract: The effects of dynamic subgrid scale (SGS) models are
investigated in variational multiscale (VMS) LES simulations of bluff
body flows. The spatial discretization is based on a mixed finite
element/finite volume formulation on unstructured grids. In the VMS
approach used in this work, the separation between the largest and the
smallest resolved scales is obtained through a variational projection
operator and a finite volume cell agglomeration. The dynamic version
of Smagorinsky and WALE SGS models are used to account for
the effects of the unresolved scales. In the VMS approach, these
effects are only modeled in the smallest resolved scales. The dynamic
VMS-LES approach is applied to the simulation of the flow around a
circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers 3900 and 20000 and to the flow
around a square cylinder at Reynolds numbers 22000 and 175000. It
is observed as in previous studies that the dynamic SGS procedure
has a smaller impact on the results within the VMS approach than in
LES. But improvements are demonstrated for important feature like
recirculating part of the flow. The global prediction is improved for
a small computational extra cost.

Abstract: This paper investigates the effect of replacing
crankshaft with cam on the indicated torque during compression and
power strokes in internal combustion engines. A Cycloidal cam
profile was used in Revetec engine to calculate and compare the
torque to a conventional engine, using a computational method.
Firstly, the cylinder pressure was calculated using Ferguson equation,
and then the torque calculated depending on cylinder pressure values
in every crank angle. the results showed that by using Cycloidal cam
profile in Revetec engine the torque can increased by 14% compared
with conventional engines, which means an increase in engine
efficiency.
Abstract: In the present paper; an experimental and numerical
investigations of drag reduction on a grooved circular cylinder have
been performed. The experiments were carried out in closed circuit
subsonic wind tunnel (TE44); the pressure distribution on the
cylinder was conducted using a TE44DPS differential pressure
scanner and the drag forces were measured using the TE81 balance.
The display unit is linked to a computer, loaded with DATASLIM
software for data analysis and logging of result. The numerical study
was performed using the code ANSYS FLUENT solving the
Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The k-ε and k-
ω SST models were tested. The results obtained from the
experimental and numerical investigations have showed a reduction
in the drag when using longitudinal grooves namely 2 and 6 on the
cylinder.
Abstract: Due to their high power-to-weight ratio and low cost,
pneumatic actuators are attractive for robotics and automation
applications; however, achieving fast and accurate control of their
position have been known as a complex control problem. A
methodology for obtaining high position accuracy with a linear
pneumatic actuator is presented. During experimentation with a
number of PID classical control approaches over many operations of
the pneumatic system, the need for frequent manual re-tuning of the
controller could not be eliminated. The reason for this problem is
thermal and energy losses inside the cylinder body due to the
complex friction forces developed by the piston displacements.
Although PD controllers performed very well over short periods, it
was necessary in our research project to introduce some form of
automatic gain-scheduling to achieve good long-term performance.
We chose a fuzzy logic system to do this, which proved to be an
easily designed and robust approach. Since the PD approach showed
very good behaviour in terms of position accuracy and settling time,
it was incorporated into a modified form of the 1st order Tagaki-
Sugeno fuzzy method to build an overall controller. This fuzzy gainscheduler
uses an input variable which automatically changes the PD
gain values of the controller according to the frequency of repeated
system operations. Performance of the new controller was
significantly improved and the need for manual re-tuning was
eliminated without a decrease in performance. The performance of
the controller operating with the above method is going to be tested
through a high-speed web network (GRID) for research purposes.
Abstract: A solar refrigeration system based on the adsorptiondesorption
phenomena is designed and analyzed. An annular tubular
generator filled with silica gel adsorbent and with a perforated inner
cylinder is integrated within a flat solar collector. The working fluid
in the refrigeration cycle is water. The thermodynamic analysis and
because of the temperature level that could be attained with a flat
solar collector it is required that the system operates under vacuum
conditions. In order to enhance the performance of the system and to
get uniform temperature in the silica gel and higher desorbed mass,
an apparatus for rotation of the generator is incorporated in the
system. Testing is carried out and measurements are taken on the
designed installation. The effect of rotation is checked on the
temperature distribution and on the performance of this machine and
compared to the flat solar collector with fixed generator.
Abstract: We address the balancing problem of transfer lines in
this paper to find the optimal line balancing that minimizes the nonproductive
time. We focus on the tool change time and face
orientation change time both of which influence the makespane. We
consider machine capacity limitations and technological constraints
associated with the manufacturing process of auto cylinder heads.
The problem is represented by a mixed integer programming model
that aims at distributing the design features to workstations and
sequencing the machining processes at a minimum non-productive
time. The proposed model is solved by an algorithm established using
linearization schemes and Benders- decomposition approach. The
experiments show the efficiency of the algorithm in reaching the
exact solution of small and medium problem instances at reasonable
time.
