Abstract: The aim of the study is to investigate a number of characteristics of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) indicators that should be adopted by CSR assessment methodologies. For the purpose of this paper, a survey among the Greek companies that belong to FTSE 20 in Athens Exchange (FTSE/Athex-20) has been conducted, as these companies are expected to pioneer in the field of CSR. The results show consensus as regards the characteristics of indicators such as the need for the adoption of general and specific sector indicators, financial and non-financial indicators, the origin and the weight rate. However, the results are contradictory concerning the appropriate number of indicators for the assessment of CSR and the unit of measurement. Finally, the company-s sector is a more important dimension of CSR than the size and the country where the company operates. The purpose of this paper is to standardize the main characteristics of CSR indicators.
Abstract: We present a numerical study of the sensitivity of the so called time relaxation family of models of fluid motion with respect to the time relaxation parameter χ on the two dimensional cavity problem. The goal of the study is to compute and compare the sensitivity of the model using finite difference method (FFD) and sensitivity equation method (SEM).
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a routing scheme that guarantees
the residual lifetime of wireless sensor networks where each
sensor node operates with a limited budget of battery energy. The
scheme maximizes the communications QoS while sustaining the
residual battery lifetime of the network for a specified duration.
Communication paths of wireless nodes are translated into a directed
acyclic graph(DAG) and the maximum-flow algorithm is applied to
the graph. The found maximum flow are assigned to sender nodes, so
as to maximize their communication QoS. Based on assigned flows,
the scheme determines the routing path and the transmission rate of
data packet so that any sensor node on the path would not exhaust
its battery energy before a specified duration.
Abstract: Today-s healthcare industries had become more
patient-centric than profession-centric, from which the issues of quality of healthcare and the patient safety are the major concerns in the modern healthcare facilities. An unplanned extubation (UE) may
be detrimental to the patient-s life, and thus is one of the major indexes
of patient safety and healthcare quality. A high UE rate not only
defeated the healthcare quality as well as the patient safety policy but
also the nurses- morality, and job satisfaction. The UE problem in a psychiatric hospital is unique and may be a tough challenge for the
healthcare professionals for the patients were mostly lacking communication capabilities. We reported with this essay a particular
project that was organized to reduce the UE rate from the current 2.3%
to a lower and satisfactory level in the long-term care units of a psychiatric hospital. The project was conducted between March 1st,
2011 and August 31st, 2011. Based on the error information gathered
from varied units of the hospital, the team analyzed the root causes
with possible solutions proposed to the meetings. Four solutions were
then concluded with consensus and launched to the units in question.
The UE rate was now reduced to a level of 0.17%. Experience from
this project, the procedure and the tools adopted would be good reference to other hospitals.
Abstract: One of the most important parameters to develop and
manage urban areas is appropriate selection of land surface to
develop green spaces in these areas. In this study, in order to identify
the most appropriate sites and areas cultivated for ornamental species
in Jiroft, Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) images
due to extract the most important effective climatic and adaphic
parameters for growth ornamental species were used. After geometric
and atmospheric corrections applied, to enhance accuracy of multi
spectral (XS) bands, the fusion of Landsat XS bands by IRS-1D
panchromatic band (PAN) was performed. After field sampling to
evaluate the correlation between different factors in surface soil
sampling location and different bands digital number (DN) of ETM+
sensor on the same points, correlation tables formed using the best
computational model and the map of physical and chemical
parameters of soil was produced. Then the accuracy of them was
investigated by using kappa coefficient. Finally, according to
produced maps, the best areas for cultivation of recommended
species were introduced.
Abstract: This paper To get the angle value with a MEMS rate
gyroscope in some specific field, the usual method is to make an
integral operation to the rate output, which will lead the error
cumulating effect. So the rate gyro is not suitable. MEMS rate
integrating gyroscope (MRIG) will solve this problem. A DSP system
has been developed to implement the control arithmetic. The system
can measure the angle of rotation directly by the control loops that
make the sensor work in whole-angle mode. Modeling the system with
MATLAB, desirable results of angle outputs are got, which prove the
feasibility of the control arithmetic.
Abstract: The development of wearable sensing technologies is a great challenge which is being addressed by the Proetex FP6 project (www.proetex.org). Its main aim is the development of wearable sensors to improve the safety and efficiency of emergency personnel. This will be achieved by continuous, real-time monitoring of vital signs, posture, activity, and external hazards surrounding emergency workers. We report here the development of carbon dioxide (CO2) sensing boot by incorporating commercially available CO2 sensor with a wireless platform into the boot assembly. Carefully selected commercially available sensors have been tested. Some of the key characteristics of the selected sensors are high selectivity and sensitivity, robustness and the power demand. This paper discusses some of the results of CO2 sensor tests and sensor integration with wireless data transmission
Abstract: Optimum communication and performance in
Wireless Sensor Networks, constitute multi-facet challenges due to
the specific networking characteristics as well as the scarce resource
availability. Furthermore, it is becoming increasingly apparent that
isolated layer based approaches often do not meet the demands posed
by WSNs applications due to omission of critical inter-layer
interactions and dependencies. As a counterpart, cross-layer is
receiving high interest aiming to exploit these interactions and
increase network performance. However, in order to clearly identify
existing dependencies, comprehensive performance studies are
required evaluating the effect of different critical network parameters
on system level performance and behavior. This paper-s main
objective is to address the need for multi-parametric performance
evaluations considering critical network parameters using a well
known network simulator, offering useful and practical conclusions
and guidelines. The results reveal strong dependencies among
considered parameters which can be utilized by and drive future
research efforts, towards designing and implementing highly efficient
protocols and architectures.
Abstract: In rotating machinery one of the critical components
that is prone to premature failure is the rolling bearing.
Consequently, early warning of an imminent bearing failure is much
critical to the safety and reliability of any high speed rotating
machines. This study is concerned with the application of Recurrence
Quantification Analysis (RQA) in fault detection of rolling element
bearings in rotating machinery. Based on the results from this study it
is reported that the RQA variable, percent determinism, is sensitive
to the type of fault investigated and therefore can provide useful
information on bearing damage in rolling element bearings.
Abstract: Nowadays, consumption of whole flours and flours
with high extraction rate is recommended, because of their high
amount of fibers, vitamins and minerals. Despite nutritional benefits
of whole flour, concentration of some undesirable components such
as phytic acid is higher than white flour. In this study, effect of
several lactic acid bacteria sourdough on Toast bread is investigated.
Sourdough from lactic acid bacteria (Lb. plantarum, Lb. reuteri) with
different dough yield (250 and 300) is made and incubated at 30°C
for 20 hour, then added to dough in the ratio of 10, 20 and 30%
replacement. Breads that supplemented with Lb. plantarum
sourdough had lower phytic acid. Higher replacement of sourdough
and higher DY cause higher decrease in phytic acid content.
Sourdough from Lb. plantarum, DY = 300 and 30% replacement
cause the highest decrease in phytic acid content (49.63 mg/100g).
As indicated by panelists, Lb. reuteri sourdough can present the
greatest effect on overall quality score of the breads. DY reduction
cause a decrease in bread quality score. Sensory score of Toast bread
is 81.71 in the samples that treated with Lb. reuteri sourdough with
DY = 250 and 20% replacement.
Abstract: Purpose: To explore the use of Curvelet transform to
extract texture features of pulmonary nodules in CT image and support
vector machine to establish prediction model of small solitary
pulmonary nodules in order to promote the ratio of detection and
diagnosis of early-stage lung cancer. Methods: 2461 benign or
malignant small solitary pulmonary nodules in CT image from 129
patients were collected. Fourteen Curvelet transform textural features
were as parameters to establish support vector machine prediction
model. Results: Compared with other methods, using 252 texture
features as parameters to establish prediction model is more proper.
And the classification consistency, sensitivity and specificity for the
model are 81.5%, 93.8% and 38.0% respectively. Conclusion: Based
on texture features extracted from Curvelet transform, support vector
machine prediction model is sensitive to lung cancer, which can
promote the rate of diagnosis for early-stage lung cancer to some
extent.
Abstract: Encryption protects communication partners from
disclosure of their secret messages but cannot prevent traffic analysis
and the leakage of information about “who communicates with
whom". In the presence of collaborating adversaries, this linkability
of actions can danger anonymity. However, reliably providing
anonymity is crucial in many applications. Especially in contextaware
mobile business, where mobile users equipped with PDAs
request and receive services from service providers, providing
anonymous communication is mission-critical and challenging at the
same time. Firstly, the limited performance of mobile devices does
not allow for heavy use of expensive public-key operations which are
commonly used in anonymity protocols. Moreover, the demands for
security depend on the application (e.g., mobile dating vs. pizza
delivery service), but different users (e.g., a celebrity vs. a normal
person) may even require different security levels for the same
application. Considering both hardware limitations of mobile devices
and different sensitivity of users, we propose an anonymity
framework that is dynamically configurable according to user and
application preferences. Our framework is based on Chaum-s mixnet.
We explain the proposed framework, its configuration
parameters for the dynamic behavior and the algorithm to enforce
dynamic anonymity.
Abstract: This paper introduces a new instantaneous frequency
computation approach -Counting Instantaneous Frequency for a
general class of signals called simple waves. The classsimple wave
contains a wide range of continuous signals for which the concept
instantaneous frequency has a perfect physical sense. The concept of
-Counting Instantaneous Frequency also applies to all the discrete data.
For all the simple wave signals and the discrete data, -Counting
instantaneous frequency can be computed directly without signal
decomposition process. The intrinsic mode functions obtained through
empirical mode decomposition belongs to simple wave. So
-Counting instantaneous frequency can be used together with
empirical mode decomposition.
Abstract: The birdhouses and dovecotes, which are the indicator
of naturalness and human-animal relationship, are one of the
traditional cultural values of Turkey. With their structures compatible
with nature and respectful to humans the bird houses and dovecotes,
which have an important position in local urbanization models as a
representative of the civil architecture with their unique form and
function are important subjects that should be evaluated in a wide
frame comprising from architecture to urbanism, from ecologic
agriculture to globalization. The traditional bird houses and
dovecotes are disregarded due to the insensitivity affecting the city
life and the change in the public sense of art. In this study, the
characteristic properties of traditional dovecotes and birdhouses,
started in 13th century and ended in 19th century in Anatolia, are
tried to be defined for the sustainability of the tradition and for giving
a new direction to the designers.
Abstract: This paper describes the application of a model
predictive controller to the problem of batch reactor temperature
control. Although a great deal of work has been done to improve
reactor throughput using batch sequence control, the control of the
actual reactor temperature remains a difficult problem for many
operators of these processes. Temperature control is important as
many chemical reactions are sensitive to temperature for formation of
desired products. This controller consist of two part (1) a nonlinear
control method GLC (Global Linearizing Control) to create a linear
model of system and (2) a Model predictive controller used to obtain
optimal input control sequence. The temperature of reactor is tuned
to track a predetermined temperature trajectory that applied to the
batch reactor. To do so two input signals, electrical powers and the
flow of coolant in the coil are used. Simulation results show that the
proposed controller has a remarkable performance for tracking
reference trajectory while at the same time it is robust against noise
imposed to system output.

Abstract: This paper presents the investigation results of UV
measurement at different level of altitudes and the development of a
new portable instrument for measuring UV. The rapid growth of
industrial sectors in developing countries including Malaysia, brings
not only income to the nation, but also causes pollution in various
forms. Air pollution is one of the significant contributors to global
warming by depleting the Ozone layer, which would reduce the
filtration of UV rays. Long duration of exposure to high to UV rays
has many devastating health effects to mankind directly or indirectly
through destruction of the natural resources. This study aimed to
show correlation between UV and altitudes which indirectly can help
predict Ozone depletion. An instrument had been designed to
measure and monitors the level of UV. The instrument comprises of
two main blocks namely data logger and Graphic User Interface
(GUI). Three sensors were used in the data logger to detect changes
in the temperature, humidity and ultraviolet. The system has
undergone experimental measurement to capture data at two different
conditions; industrial area and high attitude area. The performance of
the instrument showed consistency in the data captured and the
results of the experiment drew a significantly high reading of UV at
high altitudes.
Abstract: In this study, a mathematical model was proposed and
the accuracy of this model was assessed to predict the growth of
Pseudomonas aeruginosa and rhamnolipid production under nitrogen
limiting (sodium nitrate) fed-batch fermentation. All of the
parameters used in this model were achieved individually without
using any data from the literature.
The overall growth kinetic of the strain was evaluated using a
dual-parallel substrate Monod equation which was described by
several batch experimental data. Fed-batch data under different
glycerol (as the sole carbon source, C/N=10) concentrations and feed
flow rates were used to describe the proposed fed-batch model and
other parameters. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed
model several verification experiments were performed in a vast
range of initial glycerol concentrations. While the results showed an
acceptable prediction for rhamnolipid production (less than 10%
error), in case of biomass prediction the errors were less than 23%. It
was also found that the rhamnolipid production by P. aeruginosa was
more sensitive at low glycerol concentrations.
Based on the findings of this work, it was concluded that the
proposed model could effectively be employed for rhamnolipid
production by this strain under fed-batch fermentation on up to 80 g l-
1 glycerol.
Abstract: Control of commutation of switched reluctance (SR)
motor has been an area of interest for researchers for sometime now
with mixed successes in addressing the inherent challenges. New
technologies, processing schemes and methods have been adopted to
make sensorless SR drive a reality. There are a number of
conceptual, offline, analytical and online solutions in literature that
have varying complexities and achieved equally varying degree of
robustness and accuracies depending on the method used to address
the challenges and the SR drive application. Magnetic coupling is
one such challenge when using active probing techniques to
determine rotor position of a SR motor from stator winding. This
paper studies the effect of back-of-core saturation on the detected
rotor position and presents results on measurement made on a 4-
phase SR motor. The results shows that even for a four phase motor
which is excited one phase at a time and using the electrically
opposite phase for active position probing, the back-of-core
saturation effects should not be ignored.
Abstract: The gas safety management system using an
intelligent gas meter we proposed is to monitor flow and
pressure of gas, earthquake, temperature, smoke and leak of
methane. Then our system takes safety measures to protect a
serious risk by the result of an event, to communicate with a
wall-pad including a gateway by zigbee network in buildings
and to report the event to user by the safety management
program in a server. Also, the inner cutoff valve of an
intelligent gas meter is operated if any event occurred or
abnormal at each sensor.
