Abstract: This study presents three different approaches to
estimate bubble point pressures for the binary system of CO2 and
ethyl palmitate fatty acid ethyl ester. The first method involves the
Peng-Robinson (PR) Equation of State (EoS) with the conventional
mixing rule of Van der Waals. The second approach involves the PR
EOS together with the Wong Sandler (WS) mixing rule, coupled with
the UNIQUAC GE model. In order to model the bubble point
pressures with this approach, the volume and area parameter for ethyl
palmitate were estimated by the Hansen group contribution method.
The last method involved the Peng-Robinson, combined with the
Wong-Sandler method, but using NRTL as the GE model. Results
using the Van der Waals mixing rule clearly indicated that this
method has the largest errors among all three methods, with errors in
the range of 3.96-6.22%. The PR-WS-UNIQUAC method exhibited
small errors, with average absolute deviations between 0.95 to 1.97
percent. The PR-WS-NRTL method led to the least errors, where
average absolute deviations ranged between 0.65-1.7%.
Abstract: The disposal and the treatment of sewage sludge is an
expensive and environmentally complex problem. In this work, a
lipopeptide biosurfactant extracted from corn steep liquor was used
as ecofriendly and cost-competitive alternative for the mobilization
and bioremediation of fluorene in sewage sludge. Results have
demonstrated that this biosurfactant has the capability to mobilize
fluorene to the aqueous phase, reducing the amount of fluorene in the
sewage sludge from 484.4 mg/Kg up to 413.7 mg/Kg and 196.0
mg/Kg after 1 and 27 days respectively. Furthermore, once the
fluorene was extracted the lipopeptide biosurfactant contained in the
aqueous phase allowed the biodegradation, up to 40.5% of the initial
concentration of this polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the single-item
continuous review inventory system in which demand is stochastic
and discrete. The budget consumed for purchasing the ordered items
is not restricted but it incurs extra cost when exceeding specific
value. The unit purchasing price depends on the quantity ordered
under the all-units discounts cost structure. In many actual systems,
the budget as a resource which is occupied by the purchased items is
limited and the system is able to confront the resource shortage by
charging more costs. Thus, considering the resource shortage costs as
a part of system costs, especially when the amount of resource
occupied by the purchased item is influenced by quantity discounts,
is well motivated by practical concerns. In this paper, an optimization
problem is formulated for finding the optimal (r, Q) policy, when the
system is influenced by the budget limitation and a discount pricing
simultaneously. Properties of the cost function are investigated and
then an algorithm based on a one-dimensional search procedure is
proposed for finding an optimal (r, Q) policy which minimizes the
expected system costs.
Abstract: Feature selection has been used in many fields such as
classification, data mining and object recognition and proven to be
effective for removing irrelevant and redundant features from the
original dataset. In this paper, a new design of distributed intrusion
detection system using a combination feature selection model based
on bees and decision tree. Bees algorithm is used as the search
strategy to find the optimal subset of features, whereas decision tree
is used as a judgment for the selected features. Both the produced
features and the generated rules are used by Decision Making Mobile
Agent to decide whether there is an attack or not in the networks.
Decision Making Mobile Agent will migrate through the networks,
moving from node to another, if it found that there is an attack on one
of the nodes, it then alerts the user through User Interface Agent or
takes some action through Action Mobile Agent. The KDD Cup 99
dataset is used to test the effectiveness of the proposed system. The
results show that even if only four features are used, the proposed
system gives a better performance when it is compared with the
obtained results using all 41 features.
Abstract: DNA analysis has been widely accepted as providing
valuable evidence concerning the identity of the source of biological
traces. Our work has showed that DNA samples can survive on
cartridges even after firing. The study also raised the possibility of
determining other information such as the age of the donor. Such
information may be invaluable in certain cases where spent cartridges
from automatic weapons are left behind at the scene of a crime. In
spite of the nature of touch evidence and exposure to high chamber
temperatures during shooting, we were still capable to retrieve
enough DNA for profile typing. In order to estimate age of
contributor, DNA methylation levels were analyzed using EpiTect
system for retrieved DNA. However, results were not conclusive, due
to low amount of input DNA.
Abstract: Tannase (tannin acyl hydrolase, E.C.3.1.1.20) is an
important hydrolysable enzyme with innumerable applications and
industrial potential. In the present study, a kinetic model has been
developed for the batch fermentation used for the production of
tannase by A.flavus MTCC 3783. Maximum tannase activity of
143.30 U/ml was obtained at 96 hours under optimum operating
conditions at 35oC, an initial pH of 5.5 and with an inducer tannic
acid concentration of 3% (w/v) for a fermentation period of 120
hours. The biomass concentration reaches a maximum of 6.62 g/l at
96 hours and further there was no increase in biomass concentration
till the end of the fermentation. Various unstructured kinetic models
were analyzed to simulate the experimental values of microbial
growth, tannase activity and substrate concentration. The Logistic
model for microbial growth , Luedeking - Piret model for production
of tannase and Substrate utilization kinetic model for utilization of
substrate were capable of predicting the fermentation profile with
high coefficient of determination (R2) values of 0.980, 0.942 and
0.983 respectively. The results indicated that the unstructured models
were able to describe the fermentation kinetics more effectively.
Abstract: This paper applied factor conditions from Porter’s
Diamond Model (1990) to understand the various challenges facing
the AMISA. Factor conditions highlighted in Porter’s model are
grouped into two groups namely, basic and advance factors. Two
AMISA associations representing over 10 000 employees were
interviewed. The largest Clothing, Textiles and Leather (CTL)
apparel retail group was also interviewed with a government
department implementing the industrialization policy were
interviewed. The paper points out that AMISA have basic factor conditions
necessary for competitive advantage in the apparel industries.
However advance factor creation has proven to be a challenge for
AMISA, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and government. Poor
infrastructural maintenance has contributed to high manufacturing
costs and poor quick response technologies. The use of Porter’s
Factor Conditions as a tool to analyze the sector’s competitive
advantage challenges and opportunities has increased knowledge
regarding factors that limit the AMISA’s competitiveness. It is
therefore argued that other studies on Porter’s Diamond model
factors like Demand conditions, Firm strategy, structure and rivalry
and Related and supporting industries can be used to analyze the
situation of the AMISA for the purposes of improving competitive
advantage.
Abstract: This paper presents results of the survey regarding the
awareness about HIV/AIDS among HIV-infected individuals. A
questionnaire covering various aspects of HIV-infection was
conducted among 110 HIV-infected individuals who attended the
G.A. Zaharyan Moscow Tuberculosis Clinic, Department for
treatment of TB patients with HIV. The questionnaire included
questions about modes of HIV transmission and preventive measures
against HIV/AIDS, as well as questions about age, gender, education
and employment status. The survey revealed that the respondents in
the whole had a good knowledge regarding modes of HIV
transmission and preventive measures against HIV/AIDS: about
83,6% male respondents and 85,7% female respondents gave an
accurate answers regarding the HIV-infection. However, the
overwhelming majority of the study participants, that is, 88,5% men
and 98% women, was quite ignorant about the risk of acquiring HIV
through saliva and toothbrush of HIV-infected individual. Though
that risk is rather insignificant, it is still biologically possible. And
this gap in knowledge needs to be filled. As the study showed another
point of concern was the fact, that despite the knowledge of HIV
transmission risk through unprotected sex about 40% percent of HIVpositive
men and 25% of HIV-positive women did not insist on using
condoms with their sexual partners. These findings indicate that there
are still some aspects about HIV-infection which needed to be
clarified and explained through more detailed and specific
educational programs.
Abstract: This study makes an integrated investigation on how
life satisfaction is associated with the Korean game users'
psychological variables (self-esteem, game and life self- efficacy),
social variables (bonding and bridging social capital), and
demographic variables (age, gender). The data used for the empirical
analysis came from a representative sample survey conducted in South
Korea. Results show that self-esteem and game efficacy were an
important antecedent to the degree of users’ life satisfaction. Both
bonding social capital and bridging social capital enhance the level of
the users’ life satisfaction. The importance of perspectives as well as
their implications for the game users and further associated research is
explored.
Abstract: Workflow scheduling is an important part of cloud
computing and based on different criteria it decides cost, execution
time, and performances. A cloud workflow system is a platform
service facilitating automation of distributed applications based on
new cloud infrastructure. An aspect which differentiates cloud
workflow system from others is market-oriented business model, an
innovation which challenges conventional workflow scheduling
strategies. Time and Cost optimization algorithm for scheduling
Hybrid Clouds (TCHC) algorithm decides which resource should be
chartered from public providers is combined with a new De-De
algorithm considering that every instance of single and multiple
workflows work without deadlocks. To offset this, two new concepts
- De-De Dodging Algorithm and Priority Based Decisive Algorithm -
combine with conventional deadlock avoidance issues by proposing
one algorithm that maximizes active (not just allocated) resource use
and reduces Makespan.
Abstract: The purpose of this article is to make an approach to
the Security Studies, exposing their theories and concepts to
understand the role that they have had in the interpretation of the
changes and continuities of the world order and their impact on
policies in facing the problems of the 21st century. The aim is to
build a bridge between the security studies as a subfield and the
meaning that has been given to the world order. The idea of epistemic
communities serves as a methodological proposal for the different
programs of research in security studies, showing their influence in
the realities of States, intergovernmental organizations and
transnational forces, moving to implement, perpetuate and project a
vision of the world order.
Abstract: In this paper, the secure BioSemantic Scheme is
presented to bridge biological/biomedical research problems and
computational solutions via semantic computing. Due to the diversity
of problems in various research fields, the semantic capability
description language (SCDL) plays and important role as a common
language and generic form for problem formalization. SCDL is
expected the essential for future semantic and logical computing in
Biosemantic field. We show several example to Biomedical problems
in this paper. Moreover, in the coming age of cloud computing, the
security problem is considered to be crucial issue and we presented a
practical scheme to cope with this problem.
Abstract: Spacer grid assembly supporting the nuclear fuel rods
is an important concern in the design of structural components of a
Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR). The spacer grid is composed by
springs and dimples which are formed from a strip sheet by means of
blanking and stamping processes. In this paper, the blanking process
and tooling parameters are evaluated by means of a 2D plane-strain
finite element model in order to evaluate the punch load and quality
of the sheared edges of Inconel 718 strips used for nuclear spacer
grids. A 3D finite element model is also proposed to predict the
tooling loads resulting from the stamping process of a preformed
Inconel 718 strip and to analyse the residual stress effects upon the
spring and dimple design geometries of a nuclear spacer grid.
Abstract: This study identifies factors underlying the digital
divide that is faced by the disabled. The results of its analysis showed
that the digital divide in PC use is affected by age, number of years of
education, employment status, and household income of more than
KRW 3 million. The digital divide in smart device use is affected by
sex, age, number of years of education, time when disability struck,
and household income of more than KRW 3 million. Based on these
results, this study proposes methods for bridging the digital divide
faced by the disabled.
Abstract: The development of electric vehicle batteries have
resulted in very high energy density lithium-ion batteries. However,
this progress is accompanied by the risk of thermal runaway, which
can result in serious accidents. Heat pipes are heat exchangers that
are suitable to be applied in electric vehicle battery thermal
management for their lightweight, compact size and do not require
external power supply. This paper aims to examine experimentally a
Flat Plate Loop Heat Pipe (FPLHP) performance as a heat exchanger
in thermal management system of lithium-ion battery for electric
vehicle application. The heat generation of the battery was simulated
using a cartridge heater. Stainless steel screen mesh was used as the
capillary wick. Distilled water, alcohol and acetone were used as
working fluids with a filling ratio of 60%. It was found that acetone
gives the best performance that produces thermal resistance of 0.22
W/°C with 50°C evaporator temperature at heat flux load of 1.61
W/cm2.
Abstract: Currently there are many use of threaded reinforcing
bars in construction fields because those do not need additional screw
processing when connecting reinforcing bar by threaded coupler. In
this study, reinforced concrete bridge piers using threaded rebar
coupler system at the plastic hinge area were tested to evaluate seismic
performance. The test results showed that threads of the threaded rebar
coupler system could be loosened while under tension-compression
cyclic loading because tolerance and rib face angle of a threaded rebar
coupler system are greater than that of a conventional ribbed rebar
coupler system. As a result, cracks were concentrated just outside of
the mechanical coupler and stiffness of reinforced concrete bridge pier
decreased. Therefore, it is recommended that connection ratio of
mechanical couplers in one section shall be below 50% in order that
cracks are not concentrated just outside of the mechanical coupler.
Also, reduced stiffness of the specimen should be considered when
using the threaded rebar coupler system.

Abstract: This paper presents an approach of on-line control of
the state of technosphere and environment objects based on the
integration of Data Warehouse, OLAP and Expert systems
technologies. It looks at the structure and content of data warehouse
that provides consolidation and storage of monitoring data. There is a
description of OLAP-models that provide a multidimensional
analysis of monitoring data and dynamic analysis of principal
parameters of controlled objects. The authors suggest some criteria of
emergency risk assessment using expert knowledge about danger
levels. It is demonstrated now some of the proposed solutions could
be adopted in territorial decision making support systems.
Operational control allows authorities to detect threat, prevent natural
and anthropogenic emergencies and ensure a comprehensive safety of
territory.
Abstract: Significant attention has recently been paid to the
cross-cultural negotiations due to the growth of international
businesses. Despite the substantial body of literature examining the
influence of National Culture (NC) dimensions on negotiations, there
is a lack of studies comparing the influence of NC in Latin America
with a Western European countries, In particular, an extensive review
of the literature revealed that a contribution to knowledge would be
derived from the comparison of the influence of NC dimensions on
negotiations in UK and Venezuela. The primary data was collected
through qualitative interviews, to obtain an insight about the
perceptions and beliefs of Venezuelan and British business managers
about their negotiating styles. The findings of this study indicated
that NC has a great influence on the negotiating styles. In particular,
Venezuelan and British managers demonstrated to have opposed
negotiating styles, affecting the way they communicate, approach
people and their willingness to take risks.
Abstract: Psychopathic disorders are taking an important part in
judge sentencing, especially in Canada. First, we will see how this
phenomenon can be illustrated by the high proportion of psychopath
offenders incarcerated in North American prisons. Many decisions in
Canadians courtrooms seem to point out that psychopathy is often
used as a strong argument by the judges to preserve public safety.
The fact that psychopathy is often associated with violence,
recklessness and recidivism, could explain why many judges consider
psychopathic disorders as an aggravating factor. Generally, the judge
reasoning is based on Article 753 of Canadian Criminal Code related
to dangerous offenders, which is used for individuals who show a
pattern of repetitive and persistent aggressive behaviour. Then we
will show how, with cognitive neurosciences, the psychopath’s
situation in courtrooms would probably change. Cerebral imaging
and news data provided by the neurosciences show that emotional
and volitional functions in psychopath’s brains are impaired.
Understanding these new issues could enable some judges to
recognize psychopathic disorders as a mitigating factor. Finally, two
important questions ought to be raised in this article: can exploring
psychopaths ‘brains really change the judge sentencing in Canadian
courtrooms? If yes, can judges consider psychopathy more as a
mitigating factor than an aggravating factor?
