Abstract: Artificial Neural Network (ANN)s can be modeled for
High Energy Particle analysis with special emphasis on shower core
location. The work describes the use of an ANN based system which
has been configured to predict locations of cores of showers in the
range 1010.5 to 1020.5 eV. The system receives density values as
inputs and generates coordinates of shower events recorded for values
captured by 20 core positions and 80 detectors in an area of 100
meters. Twenty ANNs are trained for the purpose and the positions
of shower events optimized by using cooperative ANN learning. The
results derived with variations of input upto 50% show success rates
in the range of 90s.
Abstract: In the paper the research of flat textile products for use
as electrodes was presented. Material-s resistance measurements were
carried out to determine the suitability of the textiles. Based on the received results of studies different types of textile electrodes were
designed. Textile electrodes tests were carried out on human
phantoms. The electro-conductive properties of human forearm
phantom were also described. Based on this results special electroconductive
hydrogels with electro-conductive particles were feasible. The hydrogel is an important element of the forearm-s phantom
model of a survey of electrodes for muscle electrostimulation. The
hydrogel is an equivalent human skin and tissue. The hydrogel should
have a permanence and recurrence of the electro-conductive properties.
Abstract: Biodiesel production results in glycerol production as
the main by-product in biodiesel industry. One of the utilizations of
glycerol obtained from biodiesel production is as a cement grinding
aid (CGA). Results showed that crude glycerol content was 40.19%
whereas pure glycerol content was 82.15%. BSS value of the cement
with CGA supplementation was higher than that of nonsupplemented
cement (blank) indicating that CGA-supplemented
cement had higher fineness than the non-supplemented one. It was
also found that pure glycerol 95% and TEA 5% at 80ºC was the
optimum CGA used to result in finest cement with BSS value of
4.836 cm2/g. Residue test showed that the smallest percent residue
value (0.11%) was obtained in cement with supplementation of pure
glycerol 95% and TEA 5%. Results of residue test confirmed those of
BSS test showing that cement with supplementation of pure glycerol
95% and TEA 5% had the finest particle size.
Abstract: Composites based on a biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) containing 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 wt % of titanium dioxide (TiO2) micro and nanoparticles were prepared by melt mixing and the effect of filler type and contents on the thermal properties, dynamic-mechanical behaviour and morphology were investigated. Measurements of storage modulus and loss modulus by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed better results for microfilled PCL/TiO2 composites than nanofilled composites, with the same filler content. DSC analysis showed that the Tg and Tc of micro and nanocomposites were slightly lower than those of neat PCL. The crystallinity of the PCL increased with the addition of TiO2 micro and nanoparticles; however, the cc for the PCL was unchanged with micro TiO2 content. The thermal stability of PCL/TiO2 composites were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The initial weight loss (5 wt %) occurs at slightly higher temperature with micro and nano TiO2 addition and with increasing TiO2 content.
Abstract: An integrated Artificial Neural Network- Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is presented for analyzing global electricity consumption. To aim this purpose, following steps are done: STEP 1: in the first step, PSO is applied in order to determine world-s oil, natural gas, coal and primary energy demand equations based on socio-economic indicators. World-s population, Gross domestic product (GDP), oil trade movement and natural gas trade movement are used as socio-economic indicators in this study. For each socio-economic indicator, a feed-forward back propagation artificial neural network is trained and projected for future time domain. STEP 2: in the second step, global electricity consumption is projected based on the oil, natural gas, coal and primary energy consumption using PSO. global electricity consumption is forecasted up to year 2040.
Abstract: Positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) is a
technique in which a single radioactive tracer particle can be
accurately tracked as it moves. A limitation of PET is that in order to
reconstruct a tomographic image it is necessary to acquire a large
volume of data (millions of events), so it is difficult to study rapidly
changing systems. By considering this fact, PEPT is a very fast
process compared with PET.
In PEPT detecting both photons defines a line and the annihilation
is assumed to have occurred somewhere along this line. The location
of the tracer can be determined to within a few mm from coincident
detection of a small number of pairs of back-to-back gamma rays and
using triangulation. This can be achieved many times per second and
the track of a moving particle can be reliably followed. This
technique was invented at the University of Birmingham [1].
The attempt in PEPT is not to form an image of the tracer particle
but simply to determine its location with time. If this tracer is
followed for a long enough period within a closed, circulating system
it explores all possible types of motion.
The application of PEPT to industrial process systems carried out
at the University of Birmingham is categorized in two subjects: the
behaviour of granular materials and viscous fluids. Granular
materials are processed in industry for example in the manufacture of
pharmaceuticals, ceramics, food, polymers and PEPT has been used
in a number of ways to study the behaviour of these systems [2].
PEPT allows the possibility of tracking a single particle within the
bed [3]. Also PEPT has been used for studying systems such as: fluid
flow, viscous fluids in mixers [4], using a neutrally-buoyant tracer
particle [5].
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the
response of the newly released Gafchromic HD-V2 film for alpha
particle of 5.5 MeV. Gafchromic HD-V2 was exposed to alpha
particles of energy 5 MeV from 241Am for different durations. Then
the films were scanned with a flatbed scanner. The dose response
curve up to 2200 Gy has been achieved. The film’s reproducibility
and sensitivity were evaluated. The results obtained show that the net
optical density increases almost exponentially with the increase in the
exposure time, and it becomes saturated after prolonged exposure
times. The red channel shows the highest sensitivity, with a value of
4 x 10-3 Gy-1 at netOD of 0.4. The inter-film reproducibility was
measured and the relative uncertainty found was 1.7 %, 2.1 % and 2.3
% for grey, red and green channels, respectively.
Abstract: This paper proposes a three-phase four-wire currentcontrolled
Voltage Source Inverter (CC-VSI) for both power quality
improvement and PV energy extraction. For power quality
improvement, the CC-VSI works as a grid current-controlling shunt
active power filter to compensate for harmonic and reactive power of
loads. Then, the PV array is coupled to the DC bus of the CC-VSI
and supplies active power to the grid. The MPPT controller employs
the particle swarm optimization technique. The output of the MPPT
controller is a DC voltage that determines the DC-bus voltage
according to PV maximum power. The PSO method is simple and
effective especially for a partially shaded PV array. From computer
simulation results, it proves that grid currents are sinusoidal and inphase
with grid voltages, while the PV maximum active power is
delivered to loads.
Abstract: This paper presents a review on published literature
and experimental works on local sands for possible use as proppant,
specifically those from Terengganu coastal area. This includes
examination on characteristics of sand samples and selection of
experiments for proppant testing. Sand samples from identified areas
were tested according to particle size distribution, density, roundness
and sphericity, turbidity and mineralogy. Results from sand samples
were compared against proppant specifications set by API RP 56 and
selected commercial proppants. The present study found that the size
distribution, sphericity, turbidity and bulk density of Terengganu
sands are at par with some of commercial proppants. Nevertheless,
Terengganu sand samples do not completely surpass the required
roundness for use as proppant.
Abstract: The basis of examines is survey of 500 in the years
2002-2010, which was selected according to homogeneity of land
cover and where 1090 revenues were evaluated. For achieved yields
of winter wheat is obtained multicriterial regression function
depending on the major factors influencing the consumption of
nitrogen. The coefficient of discrimination of the established model is
0.722. The increase in efficiency of fertilization is involved in supply
of organic nutrients, tillage, soil pH, past weather, the humus content
in the subsoil and grain content to 0.001 mm. The decrease in
efficiency was mainly influenced by the total dose of mineral
nitrogen, although it was divided into multiple doses, the proportion
loamy particles up to 0.01 mm, rainy, or conversely dry weather
during the vegetation. The efficiency of nitrogen was found to be the
smallest on undeveloped soils and the highest on chernozem and
alluvial soils.
Abstract: This paper discusses a method for improving accuracy
of fuzzy-rule-based classifiers using particle swarm optimization
(PSO). Two different fuzzy classifiers are considered and optimized.
The first classifier is based on Mamdani fuzzy inference system
(M_PSO fuzzy classifier). The second classifier is based on Takagi-
Sugeno fuzzy inference system (TS_PSO fuzzy classifier). The
parameters of the proposed fuzzy classifiers including premise
(antecedent) parameters, consequent parameters and structure of
fuzzy rules are optimized using PSO. Experimental results show that
higher classification accuracy can be obtained with a lower number
of fuzzy rules by using the proposed PSO fuzzy classifiers. The
performances of M_PSO and TS_PSO fuzzy classifiers are compared
to other fuzzy based classifiers
Abstract: In this study, the sorption of Malachite green (MG) on Hydrilla verticillata biomass, a submerged aquatic plant, was investigated in a batch system. The effects of operating parameters such as temperature, adsorbent dosage, contact time, adsorbent size, and agitation speed on the sorption of Malachite green were analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM). The proposed quadratic model for central composite design (CCD) fitted very well to the experimental data that it could be used to navigate the design space according to ANOVA results. The optimum sorption conditions were determined as temperature - 43.5oC, adsorbent dosage - 0.26g, contact time - 200min, adsorbent size - 0.205mm (65mesh), and agitation speed - 230rpm. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to the equilibrium data. The maximum monolayer coverage capacity of Hydrilla verticillata biomass for MG was found to be 91.97 mg/g at an initial pH 8.0 indicating that the optimum sorption initial pH. The external and intra particle diffusion models were also applied to sorption data of Hydrilla verticillata biomass with MG, and it was found that both the external diffusion as well as intra particle diffusion contributes to the actual sorption process. The pseudo-second order kinetic model described the MG sorption process with a good fitting.
Abstract: We developed a method based on quasi-molecular
modelling to simulate the fall of water drops on horizontally smooth
and rough surfaces. Each quasi-molecule was a group of particles
that interacted in a fashion entirely analogous to classical Newtonian
molecular interactions. When a falling water droplet was simulated at
low impact velocity on both smooth and rough surfaces, the droplets
moved periodically (i.e. the droplets moved up and down for a
certain period, finally they stopped moving and reached a steady
state), spreading and recoiling without splash or break-up. Spreading
rates of falling water droplets increased rapidly as time increased
until the spreading rate reached its steady state at time t ~ 0.25 s for
rough surface and t ~ 0.40 s for smooth surface. The droplet height
above both surfaces decreased as time increased, remained constant
after the droplet diameter attained a maximum value and reached its
steady state at time t ~ 0.4 s. However, rough surface had higher
spreading rates of falling water droplets and lower height on the
surface than smooth one.
Abstract: The rate of production of main products of the Fischer-Tropsch reactions over Fe/HZSM5 bifunctional catalyst in a fixed bed reactor is investigated at a broad range of temperature, pressure, space velocity, H2/CO feed molar ratio and CO2, CH4 and water flow rates. Model discrimination and parameter estimation were performed according to the integral method of kinetic analysis. Due to lack of mechanism development for Fisher – Tropsch Synthesis on bifunctional catalysts, 26 different models were tested and the best model is selected. Comprehensive one and two dimensional heterogeneous reactor models are developed to simulate the performance of fixed-bed Fischer – Tropsch reactors. To reduce computational time for optimization purposes, an Artificial Feed Forward Neural Network (AFFNN) has been used to describe intra particle mass and heat transfer diffusion in the catalyst pellet. It is seen that products' reaction rates have direct relation with H2 partial pressure and reverse relation with CO partial pressure. The results show that the hybrid model has good agreement with rigorous mechanistic model, favoring that the hybrid model is about 25-30 times faster.
Abstract: Sol-gel method has been used to fabricate
nanocomposite films on glass substrates composed halloysite clay
mineral and nanocrystalline TiO2. The methodology for the synthesis
involves a simple chemistry method utilized nonionic surfactant
molecule as pore directing agent along with the acetic acid-based solgel
route with the absence of water molecules. The thermal treatment
of composite films at 450oC ensures elimination of organic material
and lead to the formation of TiO2 nanoparticles onto the surface of
the halloysite nanotubes. Microscopy techniques and porosimetry
methods used in order to delineate the structural characteristics of the
materials. The nanocomposite films produced have no cracks and
active anatase crystal phase with small crystallite size were deposited
on halloysite nanotubes. The photocatalytic properties for the new
materials were examined for the decomposition of the Basic Blue 41
azo dye in solution. These, nanotechnology based composite films
show high efficiency for dye’s discoloration in spite of different
halloysite quantities and small amount of halloysite/TiO2 catalyst
immobilized onto glass substrates. Moreover, we examined the
modification of the halloysite/TiO2 films with silver particles in order
to improve the photocatalytic properties of the films. Indeed, the
presence of silver nanoparticles enhances the discoloration rate of the
Basic Blue 41 compared to the efficiencies obtained for unmodified
films.
Abstract: The effect of Alumina nanoparticle size on thermophysical
properties, heat transfer performance and pressure loss characteristics of
Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF)-Al2O3 nanofluids is studied experimentally for
the proposed application of regenerative cooling of semi-cryogenic rocket
engine thrust chambers. Al2O3 particles with mean diameters of 50 nm or 150
nm are dispersed in ATF. At 500C and 0.3% particle volume concentration,
the bigger particles show increases of 17% in thermal conductivity and 55% in
viscosity, whereas the smaller particles show corresponding increases of 21%
and 22% for thermal conductivity and viscosity respectively. Contrary to these
results, experiments to study the heat transfer performance and pressure loss
characteristics show that at the same pumping power, the maximum
enhancement in heat transfer coefficient at 500C and 0.3% concentration is
approximately 47% using bigger particles, whereas it is only 36% using
smaller particles.
Abstract: The purpose of this investigation is to relate the rain
power and the overland flow power to soil erodibility to assess the
effects of both parameters on soil erosion using variable rainfall
intensity on remoulded agricultural soil. Six rainfall intensities were
used to simulate the natural rainfall and are as follows: 12.4mm/h,
20.3mm/h, 28.6mm/h, 52mm/h, 73.5mm/h and 103mm/h. The results
have shown that the relationship between overland flow power and
rain power is best represented by a linear function (R2=0.99). As
regards the relationships between soil erodibility factor and rain and
overland flow powers, the evolution of both parameters with the
erodibility factor follow a polynomial function with high coefficient
of determination. From their coefficients of determination (R2=0.95)
for rain power and (R2=0.96) for overland flow power, we can
conclude that the flow has more power to detach particles than rain.
This could be explained by the fact that the presence of particles,
already detached by rain and transported by the flow, give the flow
more weight and then contribute to the detachment of particles by
collision.
Abstract: The paper reports the preparation and photocatalytic
activity of ZnO/SnO2 and SnO2 nanoparticles. These nanoparticles
were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The products were
characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron
microscopy (SEM). Their grain sizes are about 50-100 nm. The
photocatalytic activities of these materials were investigated for
congo red removal from aqueous solution under UV light irradiation.
It was shown that the use of ZnO/SnO2 as photocatalyst have better
photocatalytic activity for degradation of congo red than SnO2 or
TiO2 (anatase, particle size: 30nm) alone.
Abstract: Polymeric microreactors have emerged as a new
generation of carriers that hold tremendous promise in the areas of
cancer therapy, controlled delivery of drugs, for removal of
pollutants etc. Present work reports a simple and convenient
methodology for synthesis of polystyrene and poly caprolactone
microreactors. An aqueous suspension of carboxylated (1μm)
polystyrene latex particles was mixed with toluene solution followed
by freezing with liquid nitrogen. Freezed particles were incubated at
-20°C and characterized for formation of voids on the surface of
polymer microspheres by Field Emission Scanning Electron
Microscope. The hollow particles were then overnight incubated at
40ºC with unfunctionalized quantum dots (QDs) in 5:1 ratio. QDs
Encapsulated polystyrene microcapsules were characterized by
fluorescence microscopy.
Likewise Poly ε-caprolactone microreactors were prepared by
micro-volcanic rupture of freeze dried microspheres synthesized
using emulsification of polymer with aqueous Poly vinyl alcohol and
freezed with liquid nitrogen. Microreactors were examined with Field
Emission Scanning Electron Microscope for size and morphology.
Current study is an attempt to create hollow polymer particles which
can be employed for microencapsulation of nanoparticles and drug
molecules.
Abstract: This paper mainly proposes an efficient modified
particle swarm optimization (MPSO) method, to identify a slidercrank
mechanism driven by a field-oriented PM synchronous motor.
In system identification, we adopt the MPSO method to find
parameters of the slider-crank mechanism. This new algorithm is
added with “distance" term in the traditional PSO-s fitness function to
avoid converging to a local optimum. It is found that the comparisons
of numerical simulations and experimental results prove that the
MPSO identification method for the slider-crank mechanism is
feasible.
