Abstract: A CFD study on heat flux reduction in hypersonic flow with opposing jet has been conducted. Flowfield parameters, reattachment point position, surface pressure distributions and heat flux distributions are obtained and validated with experiments. The physical mechanism of heat reduction has been analyzed. When the opposing jet blows, the freestream is blocked off, flows to the edges and not interacts with the surface to form aerodynamic heating. At the same time, the jet flows back to form cool recirculation region, which reduces the difference in temperature between the surface and the nearby gas, and then reduces the heat flux. As the pressure ratio increases, the interface between jet and freestream is gradually pushed away from the surface. Larger the total pressure ratio is, lower the heat flux is. To study the effect of the intensity of opposing jet more reasonably, a new parameter RPA has been introduced by combining the flux and the total pressure ratio. The study shows that the same shock wave position and total heat load can be obtained with the same RPA with different fluxes and the total pressures, which means the new parameter could stand for the intensity of opposing jet and could be used to analyze the influence of opposing jet on flow field and aerodynamic heating.
Abstract: Development, calibration and validation of a threedimensional
model of the Legform impactor for pedestrian crash with
bumper are presented. Lower limb injury is becoming an increasingly
important concern in vehicle safety for both occupants and
pedestrians. In order to prevent lower extremity injuries to a
pedestrian when struck by a car, it is important to elucidate the
loadings from car front structures on the lower extremities and the
injury mechanism caused by these loadings. An impact test
procedure with a legform addressing lower limb injuries in car
pedestrian accidents has been proposed by EEVC/WG17. In this
study a modified legform impactor is introduced and validated
against EEVC/WG17 criteria. The finite element model of this
legform is developed using LS-DYNA software. Total mass of
legform impactor is 13.4 kg.Technical specifications including the
mass and location of the center of gravity and moment of inertia
about a horizontal axis through the respective centre of gravity in
femur and tibia are determined. The obtained results of legform
impactor static and dynamic tests are as specified in the
EEVC/WG17.
Abstract: In this study, the possibility of using potato as a
substrate for glutamic acid production by Brevibacterium linens
was investigated. For preparation of fermentation medium, potato
was hydrolyzed by hydrochloridric acid. The medium contained
potato hydrolysate, tween 80, mineral solution, glucose, and
potassium hydrogen phosphate. The initial pH of the medium was
adjusted to 7-7.5. For achieving the optimum time with maximum
yield, the beakers containing the medium and the inoculums were
incubated in a rotary water bath flask shaker for one to five days.
Thin layer choromatography was used for quantitative and
qualitative assay of the glutamic acid produced. The results
revealed that as fermentation time increased, pH of the
fermentation medium significantly decreased (P
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to develop a typology
based on market orientation (MO) and innovation orientation (IO),
and to illustrate to what extent housing companies in Sweden fit
within this framework. A qualitative study on 11 public housing
companies in the central part of Sweden has been conducted by the
help of open and semi-structured questions for data collection. Four
public housing company types- i.e. reactive prospector, proactive
prospector, reactive defender and proactive defender have been
identified by the combination of MO-IO dimensions. Future research
can include other dimensions like entrepreneurship and network to
observe how it particularly affects MO. An empirical study can
compare public and private housing companies on the basis of MO
and IO dimensions. One major contribution of the paper is the
proposition of typology which can be used to describe public housing
companies and deciding their future course of actions.
Abstract: Knowledge of factors, which influence stress and its
distribution, is of key importance to the successful production of
durable restorations. One of this is the marginal geometry. The
objective of this study was to evaluate, by finite element analysis
(FEA), the influence of different marginal designs on the stress
distribution in teeth prepared for cast metal crowns. Five margin
designs were taken into consideration: shoulderless, chamfer,
shoulder, sloped shoulder and shoulder with bevel. For each kind of
preparation three dimensional finite element analyses were initiated.
Maximal equivalent stresses were calculated and stress patterns were
represented in order to compare the marginal designs. Within the
limitation of this study, the shoulder and beveled shoulder margin
preparations of the teeth are preferred for cast metal crowns from
biomechanical point of view.
Abstract: The present paper represents a methodology for
investigating flow characteristics near orifice plate by using a
commercial computational fluid dynamics code. The flow
characteristics near orifice plate which is located in the auxiliary
feedwater system were modeled via three different levels of grid and
four different types of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)
equations with proper near-wall treatment. The results from CFD code
were compared with experimental data in terms of differential pressure
through the orifice plate. In this preliminary study, the Realizable k-ε
and the Reynolds stress models with enhanced wall treatment were
suitable to analyze flow characteristics near orifice plate, and the
results had a good agreement with experimental data.
Abstract: The velocity of a moving point in a general path is the vector quantity, which has both magnitude and direction. The magnitude or the direction of the velocity vector can change over time as a result of acceleration that the time rate of velocity changes. Acceleration analysis is important because inertial forces and inertial torques are proportional to rectilinear and angular accelerations accordingly. The loads must be determined in advance to ensure that a machine is adequately designed to handle these dynamic loads. For planar motion, the vector direction of acceleration is commonly separated into two elements: tangential and centripetal or radial components of a point on a rotating body. All textbooks in physics, kinematics and dynamics of machinery consider the magnitude of a radial acceleration at condition when a point rotates with a constant angular velocity and it means without acceleration. The magnitude of the tangential acceleration considered on a basis of acceleration for a rotating point. Such condition of presentation of magnitudes for two components of acceleration logically and mathematically is not correct and may cause further confusion in calculation. This paper presents new analytical expressions of the radial and absolute accelerations of a rotating point with acceleration and covers the gap in theoretical study of acceleration analysis.
Abstract: In spite of the advent of new materials, clay bricks
remain, arguably, the most popular construction materials today.
Nevertheless the low cost and versatility of clay bricks cannot always
be associated with high environmental and sustainable values,
especially in terms of raw material sources and manufacturing
processes. At the same time, the worldwide agricultural footprint is
fast growing, with vast agricultural land cultivation and active
expansion of the agro-based industry. The resulting large quantities of
agricultural wastes, unfortunately, are not always well managed or
utilised. These wastes can be recycled, such as by retrieving fibres
from disposed leaves and fruit bunches, and then incorporated in
brick-making. This way the clay bricks are made a 'greener' building
material and the discarded natural wastes can be reutilised, avoiding
otherwise wasteful landfill and harmful open incineration. This study
examined the physical and mechanical properties of clay bricks made
by adding two natural fibres to a clay-water mixture, with baked and
non-baked conditions. The fibres were sourced from pineapple leaves
(PF) and oil palm fruit bunch (OF), and added within the range of
0.25-0.75 %. Cement was added as a binder to the mixture at 5-15 %.
Although the two fibres had different effects on the bricks produced,
cement appeared to dominate the compressive strength. The
non-baked bricks disintegrated when submerged in water, while the
baked ones displayed cement-dependent characteristics in
water-absorption and density changes. Interestingly, further increase
in fibre content did not cause significant density decrease in both the
baked and non-baked bricks.
Abstract: The National Bridge Inventory (NBI) includes more
than 600,000 bridges within the United States of America.
Prestressed concrete girder bridges represent one of the most widely
used bridge systems. The majority of these girder bridges were
constructed using 0.5 and 0.6 inch diameter strands. The main
impediments to using larger strand diameters are: 1) lack of prestress
bed capacities, 2) lack of structural knowledge regarding the transfer
and development length of larger strands, and 3) the possibility of
developing wider end zone cracks upon strand release.
This paper presents a study about using 0.7 inch strands in girder
fabrication. Transfer and development length were evaluated, and
girders were fabricated using 0.7 inch strands at different spacings.
Results showed that 0.7 inch strands can be used at 2.0 inch spacing
without violating the AASHTO LRFD Specifications, while attaining
superior performance in shear and flexure.
Abstract: Enzymatic hydrolysis of starch from natural sources
finds potential application in commercial production of alcoholic
beverage and bioethanol. In this study the effect of starch
concentration, temperature, time and enzyme concentration were
studied and optimized for hydrolysis of cassava (Manihot esculenta)
starch powder (of mesh 80/120) into glucose syrup by immobilized
(using Polyacrylamide gel) a-amylase using central composite
design. The experimental result on enzymatic hydrolysis of cassava
starch was subjected to multiple linear regression analysis using
MINITAB 14 software. Positive linear effect of starch concentration,
enzyme concentration and time was observed on hydrolysis of
cassava starch by a-amylase. The statistical significance of the model
was validated by F-test for analysis of variance (p < 0.01). The
optimum value of starch concentration temperature, time and enzyme
concentration were found to be 4.5% (w/v), 45oC, 150 min, and 1%
(w/v) enzyme. The maximum glucose yield at optimum condition
was 5.17 mg/mL.
Abstract: Several valve stiction models have been proposed in the literature to help understand and study the behavior of sticky valves. In this paper, an alternative black-box modeling approach based on Neural Network (NN) is presented. It is shown that with proper network type and optimum model structures, the performance of the developed NN stiction model is comparable to other established method. The resulting NN model is also tested for its robustness against the uncertainty in the stiction parameter values. Predictive mode operation also shows excellent performance of the proposed model for multi-steps ahead prediction.
Abstract: This paper deals with under actuator dynamic systems such as spring-mass-damper system when the number of control variable is less than the number of state variable. In order to apply optimal control, the controllability must be checked. There are many objective functions to be selected as the goal of the optimal control such as minimum energy, maximum energy and minimum jerk. As the objective function is the first priority, if one like to have the second goal to be applied; however, it could not fit in the objective function format and also avoiding the vector cost for the objective, this paper will illustrate the problem of under actuator dynamic systems with the easiest to deal with comparing between minimum energy and minimum jerk.
Abstract: Using of natural lighting has come into prominence in
constructed buildings, especially in last ten years, under scope of
energy efficiency. Natural lighting methods are one of the methods
that aim to take advantage of day light in maximum level and
decrease using of artificial lighting. Increasing of day light amount in
buildings by using suitable methods will give optimum result in
terms of comfort and energy saving when the daylight-artificial light
integration is ensured with a suitable control system. Using of natural
light in places that require lighting will ensure energy saving in great
extent. With this study, it is aimed to save energy used for purpose of
lighting. Under this scope, lighting of a scanning laboratory of a
hospital was realized by using a lighting automation containing
natural and artificial lighting. In natural lighting, light pipes were
used and in artificial lighting, dimmable power LED modules were
used. Necessity of lighting was followed with motion sensors. The
lighting automation containing natural and artificial light was ensured
with fuzzy logic control. At the scanning laboratory where this
application was realized, energy saving in lighting was obtained.
Abstract: A study was undertaken to investigate the effect of
liquid nitrogen aeration on mortalities of adult Cryptolestes
furrugineus, rusty grain beetles, in a prototype cardboard grain bin
equipped with an aeration system. The grain bin was filled with Hard
Red Spring wheat and liquid nitrogen was introduced from the bottom
of the bin. The survival of both cold acclimated and unacclimated C.
furrugineus was tested. The study reveals that cold acclimated insects
had higher survival than unacclimated insects under similar cooling
conditions. In most cases, mortalities of as high as 100% were
achieved at the bottom 100 cm of the grain bin for unacclimated
insects for most of the trials. Insect survival increased as the distance
from the bottom of the grain bin increased. There was no adverse
effect of liquid nitrogen aeration on wheat germination.

design make poor city image.
Abstract: The study applied a combination of organisational learning models (Senge, 1994: Pedler, Burgoyne and Boydell, 1991) and later adopted fifteen organisational learning principles with one of the biggest energy providers in South East Asia. The purposes of the current study were to: a) investigate the company-s practices on fifteen organisational learning principles; b) explore the perceptions and expectations of its employees in relations to the principles; and c) compare the perceptions and expectations between management and non-management staff toward the fifteen factors. One hundred and ten employees responded on a designed questionnaire and the results indicated that the company was practicing activities that associated with organisational learning principles. Also, according to the T-test results, significant differences between management and non-management respondents were found. Research implications are also provided.
Abstract: This paper proposes a scheduling scheme using feedback
control to reduce the response time of aperiodic tasks with soft
real-time constraints. We design an algorithm based on the proposed
scheduling scheme and Total Bandwidth Server (TBS) that is a
conventional server technique for scheduling aperiodic tasks. We then
describe the feedback controller of the algorithm and give the control
parameter tuning methods. The simulation study demonstrates that the
algorithm can reduce the mean response time up to 26% compared
to TBS in exchange for slight deadline misses.
Abstract: We consider different types of aggregation operators
such as the heavy ordered weighted averaging (HOWA) operator and
the fuzzy ordered weighted averaging (FOWA) operator. We
introduce a new extension of the OWA operator called the fuzzy
heavy ordered weighted averaging (FHOWA) operator. The main
characteristic of this aggregation operator is that it deals with
uncertain information represented in the form of fuzzy numbers (FN)
in the HOWA operator. We develop the basic concepts of this
operator and study some of its properties. We also develop a wide
range of families of FHOWA operators such as the fuzzy push up
allocation, the fuzzy push down allocation, the fuzzy median
allocation and the fuzzy uniform allocation.

Abstract: The three steps of the standard one-way nested grid
for a regional scale of the third generation WAve Model Cycle 4
(WAMC4) is scrutinized. The model application is enabled to solve
the energy balance equation on a coarse resolution grid in order to
produce boundary conditions for a smaller area by the nested grid
technique. In the present study, the model takes a full advantage of the
fine resolution of wind fields in space and time produced by the available
U.S. Navy Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS)
model with 1 degree resolution. The nested grid application of the
model is developed in order to gradually increase the resolution from
the open ocean towards the South China Sea (SCS) and the Gulf of
Thailand (GoT) respectively. The model results were compared with
buoy observations at Ko Chang, Rayong and Huahin locations which
were obtained from the Seawatch project. In addition, the results were
also compared with Satun based weather station which was provided
from Department of Meteorology, Thailand. The data collected from
this station presented the significant wave height (Hs) reached 12.85
m. The results indicated that the tendency of the Hs from the model
in the spherical coordinate propagation with deep water condition in
the fine grid domain agreed well with the Hs from the observations.
