Abstract: In this paper, a theoretical formula is presented to
predict the instantaneous folding force of the first fold creation in a
square column under axial loading. Calculations are based on analysis
of “Basic Folding Mechanism" introduced by Wierzbicki and
Abramowicz. For this purpose, the sum of dissipated energy rate under
bending around horizontal and inclined hinge lines and dissipated
energy rate under extensional deformations are equated to the work rate
of the external force on the structure. Final formula obtained in this
research, reasonably predicts the instantaneous folding force of the first
fold creation versus folding distance and folding angle and also predicts
the instantaneous folding force instead of the average value. Finally,
according to the calculated theoretical relation, instantaneous folding
force of the first fold creation in a square column was sketched
versus folding distance and was compared to the experimental results
which showed a good correlation.
Abstract: Multimedia distributed systems deal with heterogeneous
data, such as texts, images, graphics, video and audio. The specification
of temporal relations among different data types and distributed
sources is an open research area. This paper proposes a fully
distributed synchronization model to be used in multimedia systems.
One original aspect of the model is that it avoids the use of a common
reference (e.g. wall clock and shared memory). To achieve this, all
possible multimedia temporal relations are specified according to
their causal dependencies.
Abstract: The IDR(s) method based on an extended IDR theorem was proposed by Sonneveld and van Gijzen. The original IDR(s) method has excellent property compared with the conventional iterative methods in terms of efficiency and small amount of memory. IDR(s) method, however, has unexpected property that relative residual 2-norm stagnates at the level of less than 10-12. In this paper, an effective strategy for stagnation detection, stagnation avoidance using adaptively information of parameter s and improvement of convergence rate itself of IDR(s) method are proposed in order to gain high accuracy of the approximated solution of IDR(s) method. Through numerical experiments, effectiveness of adaptive tuning IDR(s) method is verified and demonstrated.
Abstract: The paper examines the performance of bit-interleaved parity (BIP) methods in error rate monitoring, and in declaration and clearing of alarms in those transport networks that employ automatic protection switching (APS). The BIP-based error rate monitoring is attractive for its simplicity and ease of implementation. The BIP-based results are compared with exact results and are found to declare the alarms too late, and to clear the alarms too early. It is concluded that the standards development and systems implementation should take into account the fact of early clearing and late declaration of alarms. The window parameters defining the detection and clearing thresholds should be set so as to build sufficient hysteresis into the system to ensure that BIP-based implementations yield acceptable performance results.
Abstract: The research investigates the effects of super plasticizer and molarity of sodium hydroxide alkaline solution on the workability, microstructure and compressive strength of self compacting geopolymer concrete (SCGC). SCGC is an improved way of concreting execution that does not require compaction and is made by complete elimination of ordinary Portland cement content. The parameters studied were superplasticizer (SP) dosage and molarity of NaOH solution. SCGC were synthesized from low calcium fly ash, activated by combinations of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solutions, and by incorporation of superplasticizer for self compactability. The workability properties such as filling ability, passing ability and resistance to segregation were assessed using slump flow, T-50, V-funnel, L-Box and J-ring test methods. It was found that the essential workability requirements for self compactability according to EFNARC were satisfied. Results showed that the workability and compressive strength improved with the increase in superplasticizer dosage. An increase in strength and a decrease in workability of these concrete samples were observed with the increase in molarity of NaOH solution from 8M to 14M. Improvement of interfacial transition zone (ITZ) and micro structure with the increase of SP and increase of concentration from 8M to 12M were also identified.
Abstract: In this paper, an inventory model with finite and
constant replenishment rate, price dependant demand rate, time
value of money and inflation, finite time horizon, lead time and
exponential deterioration rate and with the objective of maximizing
the present worth of the total system profit is developed. Using a
dynamic programming based solution algorithm, the optimal
sequence of the cycles can be found and also different optimal
selling prices, optimal order quantities and optimal maximum
inventories can be obtained for the cycles with unequal lengths,
which have never been done before for this model. Also, a
numerical example is used to show accuracy of the solution
procedure.
Abstract: Frequent patterns are patterns such as sets of features or items that appear in data frequently. Finding such frequent patterns has become an important data mining task because it reveals associations, correlations, and many other interesting relationships hidden in a dataset. Most of the proposed frequent pattern mining algorithms have been implemented with imperative programming languages such as C, Cµ, Java. The imperative paradigm is significantly inefficient when itemset is large and the frequent pattern is long. We suggest a high-level declarative style of programming using a functional language. Our supposition is that the problem of frequent pattern discovery can be efficiently and concisely implemented via a functional paradigm since pattern matching is a fundamental feature supported by most functional languages. Our frequent pattern mining implementation using the Haskell language confirms our hypothesis about conciseness of the program. The performance studies on speed and memory usage support our intuition on efficiency of functional language.
Abstract: The Norwegian Military Academy (Army) has
initiated a project with the main ambition to explore possible avenues
to enhancing operational effectiveness through an increased use of
simulation-based training and exercises. Within a cost/benefit
framework, we discuss opportunities and limitations of vertical and
horizontal integration of the existing tactical training system. Vertical
integration implies expanding the existing training system to span the
full range of training from tactical level (platoon, company) to
command and staff level (battalion, brigade). Horizontal integration
means including other domains than army tactics and staff
procedures in the training, such as military ethics, foreign languages,
leadership and decision making. We discuss each of the integration
options with respect to purpose and content of training, "best
practice" for organising and conducting simulation-based training,
and suggest how to evaluate training procedures and measure
learning outcomes. We conclude by giving guidelines towards further
explorative work and possible implementation.
Abstract: An experiment was conducted to determine the effect
of the rearing system on growth performance, carcass yield,
hematological parameters, and feather pecking damage of Thai
indigenous chickens. Three hundred and sixty 1-d-old chicks were
randomly assigned to 2 treatments: indoor treatment and outdoor
access treatment. In the indoor treatment, the chickens were housed
in floor pens (5 birds/m2). In the outdoor access treatment, the
chickens were housed in a similar indoor house; in addition, they also
had an outdoor grass paddock (1 bird/m2). All birds were provided
with same diet and were raised for 16 wk of age. The results showed
that growth performance and carcass yield were not different among
treatment (P>0.05). Outdoor access had no effect on hematological
parameters (P>0.05). However, the feather pecking damage of the
chickens in the outdoor access treatment was lower than that of the
chickens in the indoor treatment (P
Abstract: Shrunken patterning for integrated device
manufacturing requires surface cleanliness and surface smoothness in
wet chemical processing [1]. It is necessary to control all process
parameters perfectly especially for the common cleaning technique
RCA clean (SC-1 and SC-2) [2]. In this paper the characteristic and
effect of surface preparation parameters are discussed. The properties
of RCA wet chemical processing in silicon technology is based on
processing time, temperature, concentration and megasonic power of
SC-1 and QDR. An improvement of wafer surface preparation by
the enhanced variables of the wet cleaning chemical process is
proposed.
Abstract: In recent years application of natural antimicrobials
instead of conventional ones, due to their hazardous effects on health,
has got serious attentions. On the basis of the results of different
studies, chitosan, a natural bio-degradable and non-toxic
biopolysaccharide derived from chitin, has potential to be used as a
natural antimicrobial. Chitosan has exhibited high antimicrobial
activity against a wide variety of pathogenic and spoilage
microorganisms, including fungi, and Gram-positive and Gramnegative
bacteria. The antimicrobial action is influenced by intrinsic
factors such as the type of chitosan, the degree of chitosan
polymerization and extrinsic factors such as the microbial organism,
the environmental conditions and presence of the other components.
The use of chitosan in food systems should be based on sufficient
knowledge of the complex mechanisms of its antimicrobial mode of
action. In this article we review a number of studies on the
investigation of chitosan antimicrobial properties and application of
them in culture and food mediums.
Abstract: This paper presents the use of Legendre pseudospectral
method for the optimization of finite-thrust orbital transfer for
spacecrafts. In order to get an accurate solution, the System-s
dynamics equations were normalized through a dimensionless method.
The Legendre pseudospectral method is based on interpolating
functions on Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto (LGL) quadrature nodes. This
is used to transform the optimal control problem into a constrained
parameter optimization problem. The developed novel optimization
algorithm can be used to solve similar optimization problems of
spacecraft finite-thrust orbital transfer. The results of a numerical
simulation verified the validity of the proposed optimization method.
The simulation results reveal that pseudospectral optimization method
is a promising method for real-time trajectory optimization and
provides good accuracy and fast convergence.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a robust face relighting
technique by using spherical space properties. The proposed method
is done for reducing the illumination effects on face recognition.
Given a single 2D face image, we relight the face object by
extracting the nine spherical harmonic bases and the face spherical
illumination coefficients. First, an internal training illumination
database is generated by computing face albedo and face normal
from 2D images under different lighting conditions. Based on the
generated database, we analyze the target face pixels and compare
them with the training bootstrap by using pre-generated tiles. In this
work, practical real time processing speed and small image size were
considered when designing the framework. In contrast to other works,
our technique requires no 3D face models for the training process
and takes a single 2D image as an input. Experimental results on
publicly available databases show that the proposed technique works
well under severe lighting conditions with significant improvements
on the face recognition rates.

Abstract: A steady two-phase flow model has been developed to simulate the drying process of porous particle in a pneumatic conveying dryer. The model takes into account the momentum, heat and mass transfer between the continuous phase and the dispersed phase. A single particle model was employed to calculate the evaporation rate. In this model the pore structure is simplified to allow the dominant evaporation mechanism to be readily identified at all points within the duct. The predominant mechanism at any time depends upon the pressure, temperature and the diameter of pore from which evaporating is occurring. The model was validated against experimental studies of pneumatic transport at low and high speeds as well as pneumatic drying. The effects of operating conditions on the dryer parameters are studied numerically. The present results show that the drying rate is enhanced as the inlet gas temperature and the gas flow rate increase and as the solid mass flow rate deceases. The present results also demonstrate the necessity of measuring the inlet gas velocity or the solid concentration in any experimental analysis.
Abstract: Continuously growing needs for Internet applications
that transmit massive amount of data have led to the emergence of
high speed network. Data transfer must take place without any
congestion and hence feedback parameters must be transferred from
the receiver end to the sender end so as to restrict the sending rate in
order to avoid congestion. Even though TCP tries to avoid
congestion by restricting the sending rate and window size, it never
announces the sender about the capacity of the data to be sent and
also it reduces the window size by half at the time of congestion
therefore resulting in the decrease of throughput, low utilization of
the bandwidth and maximum delay. In this paper, XCP protocol is
used and feedback parameters are calculated based on arrival rate,
service rate, traffic rate and queue size and hence the receiver
informs the sender about the throughput, capacity of the data to be
sent and window size adjustment, resulting in no drastic decrease in
window size, better increase in sending rate because of which there is
a continuous flow of data without congestion. Therefore as a result of
this, there is a maximum increase in throughput, high utilization of
the bandwidth and minimum delay. The result of the proposed work
is presented as a graph based on throughput, delay and window size.
Thus in this paper, XCP protocol is well illustrated and the various
parameters are thoroughly analyzed and adequately presented.
Abstract: Current mode circuits like current conveyors are
getting significant attention in current analog ICs design due to their
higher band-width, greater linearity, larger dynamic range, simpler
circuitry, lower power consumption and less chip area. The second
generation current controlled conveyor (CCCII) has the advantage of
electronic adjustability over the CCII i.e. in CCCII; adjustment of the
X-terminal intrinsic resistance via a bias current is possible. The
presented approach is based on the CMOS implementation of second
generation positive (CCCII+), negative (CCCII-) and dual Output
Current Controlled Conveyor (DOCCCII) and its application as
Universal filter. All the circuits have been designed and simulated
using 65nm CMOS technology model parameters on Cadence
Virtuoso / Spectre using 1V supply voltage. Various simulations have
been carried out to verify the linearity between output and input
ports, range of operation frequency, etc. The outcomes show good
agreement between expected and experimental results.
Abstract: Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are direct searching
methods which require little information from design space. This
characteristic beside robustness of these algorithms makes them to be
very popular in recent decades. On the other hand, while this method
is employed, there is no guarantee to achieve optimum results. This
obliged designer to run such algorithms more than one time to
achieve more reliable results. There are many attempts to modify the
algorithms to make them more efficient. In this paper, by application
of fractal dimension (particularly, Box Counting Method), the
complexity of design space are established for determination of
mutation and crossover probabilities (Pm and Pc). This methodology
is followed by a numerical example for more clarification. It is
concluded that this modification will improve efficiency of GAs and
make them to bring about more reliable results especially for design
space with higher fractal dimensions.
Abstract: This research is to design and implement a new kind
of agitators called differential agitator. The Differential Agitator is an
electro- mechanic set consists of two shafts. The first shaft is the
bearing axis while the second shaft is the axis of the quartet upper
bearing impellers group and the triple lower group which are called
as agitating group. The agitating group is located inside a cylindrical
container equipped especially to contain square directors for the
liquid entrance and square directors called fixing group for the liquid
exit. The fixing group is installed containing the agitating group
inside any tank whether from upper or lower position. The agitating
process occurs through the agitating group bearing causing a lower
pressure over the upper group leading to withdrawing the liquid from
the square directors of the liquid entering and consequently the liquid
moves to the denser place under the quartet upper group. Then, the
liquid moves to the so high pressure area under the agitating group
causing the liquid to exit from the square directors in the bottom of
the container. For improving efficiency, parametric study and shape
optimization has been carried out. A numerical analysis,
manufacturing and laboratory experiments were conducted to design
and implement the differential agitator. Knowing the material
prosperities and the loading conditions, the FEM using ANSYS11
was used to get the optimum design of the geometrical parameters of
the differential agitator elements while the experimental test was
performed to validate the advantages of the differential agitators to
give a high agitation performance of lime in the water as an example.
In addition, the experimental work has been done to express the
internal container shape in the agitation efficiency. The study ended
up with conclusions to maximize agitator performance and optimize
the geometrical parameters to be used for manufacturing the
differential agitator
