Abstract: Optical 3D measurement of objects is meaningful in
numerous industrial applications. In various cases shape acquisition
of weak textured objects is essential. Examples are repetition parts
made of plastic or ceramic such as housing parts or ceramic bottles as
well as agricultural products like tubers. These parts are often
conveyed in a wobbling way during the automated optical inspection.
Thus, conventional 3D shape acquisition methods like laser scanning
might fail. In this paper, a novel approach for acquiring 3D shape of
weak textured and moving objects is presented. To facilitate such
measurements an active stereo vision system with structured light is
proposed. The system consists of multiple camera pairs and auxiliary
laser pattern generators. It performs the shape acquisition within one
shot and is beneficial for rapid inspection tasks. An experimental
setup including hardware and software has been developed and
implemented.
Abstract: The introduction of sowing technologies into minimum- or no-tillage soil has a number of economical and environmental virtues, such as improving soil properties, decreasing soil erosion and degradation, and saving working time and fuel. However, the main disadvantage of these technologies is that plant residues on the soil surface reduce the quality of the planted crop seeds, thus requiring plant residues to be removed or cut. This paper presents a analysis of disc coulter parameters and an experimental investigation of cutting spring barley straw containing various amounts of moisture with different disc coulters (smooth and notched).
Abstract: The two-phase flow field and the motion of the free
surface in an oscillating channel are simulated numerically to assess
the methodology for simulating nuclear reacotr thermal hydraulics
under seismic conditions. Two numerical methods are compared: one
is to model the oscillating channel directly using the moving grid of
the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method, and the other is to simulate
the effect of channel motion using the oscillating acceleration acting
on the fluid in the stationary channel. The two-phase flow field in the
oscillating channel is simulated using the level set method in both
cases. The calculated results using the oscillating acceleration are
found to coinside with those using the moving grid, and the theoretical
back ground and the limitation of oscillating acceleration are discussed.
It is shown that the change in the interfacial area between liquid and
gas phases under seismic conditions is important for nuclear reactor
thermal hydraulics.
Abstract: This paper presents a generalization kernel for gravitational
potential determination by harmonic splines. It was shown
in [10] that the gravitational potential can be approximated using a
kernel represented as a Newton integral over the real Earth body. On
the other side, the theory of geopotential approximation by harmonic
splines uses spherically oriented kernels. The purpose of this paper
is to show that in the spherical case both kernels have the same type
of representation, which leads us to conclusion that it is possible
to consider the kernel represented as a Newton integral over the real
Earth body as a kind of generalization of spherically harmonic kernels
to real geometries.
Abstract: Increasing energy absorption is a significant parameter
in vehicle design. Absorbing more energy results in decreasing
occupant damage. Limitation of the deflection in a side impact results
in decreased energy absorption (SEA) and increased peak load (PL).
Hence a high crash force jeopardizes passenger safety and vehicle
integrity. The aims of this paper are to determine suitable dimensions
and material of a square beam subjected to side impact, in order to
maximize SEA and minimize PL. To achieve this novel goal, the
geometric parameters of a square beam are optimized using the
response surface method (RSM).multi-objective optimization is
performed, and the optimum design for different response features is
obtained.
Abstract: In this research, CaO-ZnO catalysts (with various
Ca:Zn atomic ratios of 1:5, 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1) prepared by incipientwetness
impregnation (IWI) and co-precipitation (CP) methods were
used as a catalyst in the transesterification of palm oil with methanol
for biodiesel production. The catalysts were characterized by several
techniques, including BET method, CO2-TPD, and Hemmett
Indicator. The effects of precursor concentration, and calcination
temperature on the catalytic performance were studied under reaction
conditions of a 15:1 methanol to oil molar ratio, 6 wt% catalyst,
reaction temperature of 60°C, and reaction time of 8 h. At Ca:Zn
atomic ratio of 1:3 gave the highest FAME value owing to a basic
properties and surface area of the prepared catalyst.
Abstract: Fecal coliform bacteria are widely used as indicators of
sewage contamination in surface water. However, there are some
disadvantages in these microbial techniques including time consuming
(18-48h) and inability in discriminating between human and animal
fecal material sources. Therefore, it is necessary to seek a more
specific indicator of human sanitary waste. In this study, the feasibility
was investigated to apply caffeine and human pharmaceutical
compounds to identify the human-source contamination. The
correlation between caffeine and fecal coliform was also explored.
Surface water samples were collected from upstream, middle-stream
and downstream points respectively, along Rochor Canal, as well as 8
locations of Marina Bay. Results indicate that caffeine is a suitable
chemical tracer in Singapore because of its easy detection (in the range
of 0.30-2.0 ng/mL), compared with other chemicals monitored.
Relative low concentrations of human pharmaceutical compounds (<
0.07 ng/mL) in Rochor Canal and Marina Bay water samples make
them hard to be detected and difficult to be chemical tracer. However,
their existence can help to validate sewage contamination. In addition,
it was discovered the high correlation exists between caffeine
concentration and fecal coliform density in the Rochor Canal water
samples, demonstrating that caffeine is highly related to the
human-source contamination.

Abstract: Simultaneous effects of temperature, immersion time, salt concentration, sucrose concentration, pressure and convective dryer temperature on the combined osmotic dehydration - convective drying of edible button mushrooms were investigated. Experiments were designed according to Central Composite Design with six factors each at five different levels. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to determine the optimum processing conditions that yield maximum water loss and rehydration ratio and minimum solid gain and shrinkage in osmotic-convective drying of edible button mushrooms. Applying surfaces profiler and contour plots optimum operation conditions were found to be temperature of 39 °C, immersion time of 164 min, salt concentration of 14%, sucrose concentration of 53%, pressure of 600 mbar and drying temperature of 40 °C. At these optimum conditions, water loss, solid gain, rehydration ratio and shrinkage were found to be 63.38 (g/100 g initial sample), 3.17 (g/100 g initial sample), 2.26 and 7.15%, respectively.
Abstract: The modeling of inelastic behavior of plastic materials requires measurements providing information on material response to different multiaxial loading conditions. Different triaxiality conditions and values of Lode parameters have to be
covered for complex description of the material plastic behavior.
Samples geometries providing material plastic behavoiur over the range of interest are proposed with the use of FEM analysis. Round samples with 3 different notches and smooth surface are used
together with butterfly type of samples tested at angle ranging for 0 to
90°. Identification of ductile damage parameters is carried out on
the basis of obtained experimental data for austenitic stainless steel.
The obtained material plastic damage parameters are subsequently applied to FEM simulation of notched CT normally samples used for
fracture mechanics testing and results from the simulation are
compared with real tests.
Abstract: The flow field and the motion of the free surface in an
oscillating container are simulated numerically to assess the numerical
approach for studying two-phase flows under oscillating conditions.
Two numerical methods are compared: one is to model the oscillating
container directly using the moving grid of the ALE method, and the
other is to simulate the effect of container motion using the oscillating
body force acting on the fluid in the stationary container. The
two-phase flow field in the container is simulated using the level set
method in both cases. It is found that the calculated results by the body
force method coinsides with those by the moving grid method and the
sloshing behavior is predicted well by both the methods. Theoretical
back ground and limitation of the body force method are discussed,
and the effects of oscillation amplitude and frequency are shown.
Abstract: This research simulates one of the natural phenomena,
the ocean wave. Our goal is to be able to simulate the ocean wave at
real-time rate with the water surface interacting with objects. The
wave in this research is calm and smooth caused by the force of the
wind above the ocean surface. In order to make the simulation of the
wave real-time, the implementation of the GPU and the
multithreading techniques are used here. Based on the fact that the
new generation CPUs, for personal computers, have multi cores, they
are useful for the multithread. This technique utilizes more than one
core at a time. This simulation is programmed by C language with
OpenGL. To make the simulation of the wave look more realistic, we
applied an OpenGL technique called cube mapping (environmental
mapping) to make water surface reflective and more realistic.
Abstract: In this study, some physical and mechanical properties
of jujube fruits, were measured and compared at constant moisture
content of 15.5% w.b. The results showed that the mean length, width
and thickness of jujube fruits were 18.88, 16.79 and 15.9 mm,
respectively. The mean projected areas of jujube perpendicular to
length, width, and thickness were 147.01, 224.08 and 274.60 mm2,
respectively. The mean mass and volume were 1.51 g and 2672.80
mm3, respectively. The arithmetic mean diameter, geometric mean
diameter and equivalent diameter varied from 14.53 to 20 mm, 14.5
to 19.94 mm, and 14.52 to 19.97 mm, respectively. The sphericity,
aspect ratio and surface area of jujube fruits were 0.91, 0.89 and
926.28 mm2, respectively. Whole fruit density, bulk density and
porosity of jujube fruits were measured and found to be 1.52 g/cm3,
0.3 g/cm3 and 79.3%, respectively. The angle of repose of jujube fruit
was 14.66° (±0.58°). The static coefficient of friction on galvanized
iron steel was higher than that on plywood and lower than that on
glass surface. The values of rupture force, deformation, hardness and
energy absorbed were found to be between 11.13-19.91N, 2.53-
4.82mm, 3.06-5.81N mm and 20.13-39.08 N/mm, respectively.

Abstract: This paper analyses the unsteady, two-dimensional
stagnation point flow of an incompressible viscous fluid over a flat
sheet when the flow is started impulsively from rest and at the same
time, the sheet is suddenly stretched in its own plane with a velocity
proportional to the distance from the stagnation point. The partial
differential equations governing the laminar boundary layer forced
convection flow are non-dimensionalised using semi-similar
transformations and then solved numerically using an implicit finitedifference
scheme known as the Keller-box method. Results
pertaining to the flow and heat transfer characteristics are computed
for all dimensionless time, uniformly valid in the whole spatial region
without any numerical difficulties. Analytical solutions are also
obtained for both small and large times, respectively representing the
initial unsteady and final steady state flow and heat transfer.
Numerical results indicate that the velocity ratio parameter is found
to have a significant effect on skin friction and heat transfer rate at
the surface. Furthermore, it is exposed that there is a smooth
transition from the initial unsteady state flow (small time solution) to
the final steady state (large time solution).
Abstract: A physically based, spatially-distributed water quality model is being developed to simulate spatial and temporal distributions of material transport in the Great Lakes Watersheds of the U.S. Multiple databases of meteorology, land use, topography, hydrography, soils, agricultural statistics, and water quality were used to estimate nonpoint source loading potential in the study watersheds. Animal manure production was computed from tabulations of animals by zip code area for the census years of 1987, 1992, 1997, and 2002. Relative chemical loadings for agricultural land use were calculated from fertilizer and pesticide estimates by crop for the same periods. Comparison of these estimates to the monitored total phosphorous load indicates that both point and nonpoint sources are major contributors to the total nutrient loads in the study watersheds, with nonpoint sources being the largest contributor, particularly in the rural watersheds. These estimates are used as the input to the distributed water quality model for simulating pollutant transport through surface and subsurface processes to Great Lakes waters. Visualization and GIS interfaces are developed to visualize the spatial and temporal distribution of the pollutant transport in support of water management programs.
Abstract: Liposomal magnetofection is a simple, highly efficient
technology for cell transfection, demonstrating better outcome than a
number of other common gene delivery methods. However,
aggregate complexes distribution over the cell surface is non-uniform
due to the gradient of the permanent magnetic field. The aim of this
study was to estimate the efficiency of liposomal magnetofection for
prostate carcinoma PC3 cell line using newly designed device,
“DynaFECTOR", ensuring magnetofection in a dynamic gradient
magnetic field. Liposomal magnetofection in a dynamic gradient
magnetic field demonstrated the highest transfection efficiency for
PC3 cells – it increased for 21% in comparison with liposomal
magnetofection and for 42% in comparison with lipofection alone.
The optimal incubation time under dynamic magnetic field for PC3
cell line was 5 minutes and the optimal rotation frequency of
magnets – 5 rpm. The new approach also revealed lower cytotoxic
effect to cells than liposomal magnetofection.
Abstract: Direct fermentation of 226 white rose tapioca stem to
ethanol by Fusarium oxysporum was studied in a batch reactor.
Fermentation of ethanol can be achieved by sequential pretreatment
using dilute acid and dilute alkali solutions using 100 mesh tapioca
stem particles. The quantitative effects of substrate concentration, pH
and temperature on ethanol concentration were optimized using a full
factorial central composite design experiment. The optimum process
conditions were then obtained using response surface methodology.
The quadratic model indicated that substrate concentration of 33g/l,
pH 5.52 and a temperature of 30.13oC were found to be optimum for
maximum ethanol concentration of 8.64g/l. The predicted optimum
process conditions obtained using response surface methodology was
verified through confirmatory experiments. Leudeking-piret model
was used to study the product formation kinetics for the production
of ethanol and the model parameters were evaluated using
experimental data.
Abstract: On the basis of Bayesian inference using the
maximizer of the posterior marginal estimate, we carry out phase
unwrapping using multiple interferograms via generalized mean-field
theory. Numerical calculations for a typical wave-front in remote
sensing using the synthetic aperture radar interferometry, phase
diagram in hyper-parameter space clarifies that the present method
succeeds in phase unwrapping perfectly under the constraint of
surface- consistency condition, if the interferograms are not corrupted
by any noises. Also, we find that prior is useful for extending a phase
in which phase unwrapping under the constraint of the
surface-consistency condition. These results are quantitatively
confirmed by the Monte Carlo simulation.
Abstract: The importance for manipulating an incorporated
scaffold and directing cell behaviors is well appreciated for tissue
engineering. Here, we developed newly nano-topographic oxidized
silicon nanosponges capable of being various chemical modifications
to provide much insight into the fundamental biology of how cells
interact with their surrounding environment in vitro. A wet etching
technique is exerted to allow us fabricated the silicon nanosponges in a
high-throughput manner. Furthermore, various organo-silane
chemicals enabled self-assembled on the surfaces by vapor deposition.
We have found that Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells displayed
certain distinguishable morphogenesis, adherent responses, and
biochemical properties while cultured on these chemical modified
nano-topographic structures in compared with the planar oxidized
silicon counterparts, indicating that cell behaviors can be influenced
by certain physical characteristic derived from nano-topography in
addition to the hydrophobicity of contact surfaces crucial for cell
adhesion and spreading. Of particular, there were predominant
nano-actin punches and slender protrusions formed while cells were
cultured on the nano-topographic structures. This study shed potential
applications of these nano-topographic biomaterials for controlling
cell development in tissue engineering or basic cell biology research.
