Abstract: This paper presents a generalization kernel for gravitational
potential determination by harmonic splines. It was shown
in [10] that the gravitational potential can be approximated using a
kernel represented as a Newton integral over the real Earth body. On
the other side, the theory of geopotential approximation by harmonic
splines uses spherically oriented kernels. The purpose of this paper
is to show that in the spherical case both kernels have the same type
of representation, which leads us to conclusion that it is possible
to consider the kernel represented as a Newton integral over the real
Earth body as a kind of generalization of spherically harmonic kernels
to real geometries.
Abstract: We have devised a thermal carpet cloak theoretically
and implemented in silicon using layered metamaterial. The layered
metamaterial is composed of single crystalline silicon and its phononic
crystal. The design is based on a coordinate transformation. We
demonstrate the result with numerical simulation. Great cloaking
performance is achieved as a thermal insulator is well hidden under the
thermal carpet cloak. We also show that the thermal carpet cloak can
even the temperature on irregular surface. Using thermal carpet cloak
to manipulate the heat conduction is effective because of its low
complexity.
Abstract: It is an important problem to compute the geodesics on
a surface in many fields. To find the geodesics in practice, however,
the traditional discrete algorithms or numerical approaches can only
find a list of discrete points. The first author proposed in 2010 a new,
elegant and accurate method, the geodesic-like method, for
approximating geodesics on a regular surface. This paper will present
by use of this method a computation of the Bezier geodesic-like curves
on spheres.
Abstract: Application of wood in rural construction is diffused
all around the world since remote times. However, its inclusion in
structural design deserves strong support from broad knowledge of
material properties. The pertinent literature reveals the application of
optical methods in determining the complete field displacement on
bodies exhibiting regular as well as irregular surfaces. The use of
moiré techniques in experimental mechanics consists in analyzing the
patterns generated on the body surface before and after deformation.
The objective of this research work is to study the qualitative
deformation behavior of wooden testing specimens under specific
loading situations. The experiment setup follows the literature
description of shadow moiré methods. Results indicate strong
anisotropy influence of the generated displacement field. Important
qualitative as well as quantitative stress and strain distribution were
obtained wooden members which are applicable to rural
constructions.
