Abstract: Liveable city is referred to as the quality of life in an
area that contributes towards a safe, healthy and enjoyable place. This
paper discusses the role of the streets- activities in making Kuala
Lumpur a liveable city and the happiness level of the residents
towards the city-s street activities. The study was conducted using the
residents of Kuala Lumpur. A mixed method technique is used with
the quantitative data as a main data and supported by the qualitative
data. Data were collected using questionnaires, observation and also
an interview session with a sample of residents of Kuala Lumpur.
The sampling technique is based on multistage cluster data sampling.
The findings revealed that, there is still no significant relationship
between the length of stay of the resident in Kuala Lumpur with the
happiness level towards the street activities that occurred in the city.
Abstract: Contact stress analysis between two spur gear
teeth was considered in different contact positions,
representing a pair of mating gears during rotation. A
programme has been developed to plot a pair of teeth in contact. This programme was run for each 3° of pinion
rotation from the first location of contact to the last location of
contact to produce 10 cases. Each case was represented a
sequence position of contact between these two teeth. The
programme gives graphic results for the profiles of these teeth
in each position and location of contact during rotation. Finite
element models were made for these cases and stress analysis
was done. The results were presented and finite element
analysis results were compared with theoretical calculations,
wherever available.
Abstract: In this paper, the effect of addition the dune sand powder (DSP) on development of compressive strength and hydration of cement pastes was investigated as a function of water/binder ratio, was varied, on the one hand, the percentage of DSP and on the other, the fineness of DSP. In order to understand better the pozzolanic effect of dune sand powder in cement pastes, we followed the mixtures hydration (50% Pure Lime + 50% DSP) by X-ray diffraction. These mixtures the pastes present a hydraulic setting which is due to the formation of a C-S-H phase (calcium silicate hydrate). The latter is semi-crystallized. This study is a simplified approach to that of the mixtures (80% ordinary Portland cement + 20% DSP), in which the main reaction is the fixing of the lime coming from the cement hydration in the presence of DSP, to form calcium silicate hydrate semi-crystallized of second generation. The results proved that up to (20% DSP) as Portland cement replacement could be used with a fineness of 4000 cm²/g without affecting adversely the compressive strength. After 28 days, the compressive strength at 5, 10 and 15% DSP is superior to Portland cement, with an optimum effect for a percentage of the order of 5% to 10% irrespective of the w/b ratio and fineness of DSP.
Abstract: Insulation used in transformer is mostly oil pressboard insulation. Insulation failure is one of the major causes of catastrophic failure of transformers. It is established that partial discharges (PD) cause insulation degradation and premature failure of insulation. Online monitoring of PDs can reduce the risk of catastrophic failure of transformers. There are different techniques of partial discharge measurement like, electrical, optical, acoustic, opto-acoustic and ultra high frequency (UHF). Being non invasive and non interference prone, acoustic emission technique is advantageous for online PD measurement. Acoustic detection of p.d. is based on the retrieval and analysis of mechanical or pressure signals produced by partial discharges. Partial discharges are classified according to the origin of discharges. Their effects on insulation deterioration are different for different types. This paper reports experimental results and analysis for classification of partial discharges using acoustic emission signal of laboratory simulated partial discharges in oil pressboard insulation system using three different electrode systems. Acoustic emission signal produced by PD are detected by sensors mounted on the experimental tank surface, stored on an oscilloscope and fed to computer for further analysis. The measured AE signals are analyzed using discrete wavelet transform analysis and wavelet packet analysis. Energy distribution in different frequency bands of discrete wavelet decomposed signal and wavelet packet decomposed signal is calculated. These analyses show a distinct feature useful for PD classification. Wavelet packet analysis can sort out any misclassification arising out of DWT in most cases.
Abstract: The current research paper is an implementation of
Eigen Faces and Karhunen-Loeve Algorithm for face recognition.
The designed program works in a manner where a unique
identification number is given to each face under trial. These faces
are kept in a database from where any particular face can be matched
and found out of the available test faces. The Karhunen –Loeve
Algorithm has been implemented to find out the appropriate right
face (with same features) with respect to given input image as test
data image having unique identification number. The procedure
involves usage of Eigen faces for the recognition of faces.
Abstract: The counting process of cell colonies is always a long
and laborious process that is dependent on the judgment and ability
of the operator. The judgment of the operator in counting can vary in
relation to fatigue. Moreover, since this activity is time consuming it
can limit the usable number of dishes for each experiment. For these
purposes, it is necessary that an automatic system of cell colony
counting is used. This article introduces a new automatic system of
counting based on the elaboration of the digital images of cellular
colonies grown on petri dishes. This system is mainly based on the
algorithms of region-growing for the recognition of the regions of
interest (ROI) in the image and a Sanger neural net for the
characterization of such regions. The better final classification is
supplied from a Feed-Forward Neural Net (FF-NN) and confronted
with the K-Nearest Neighbour (K-NN) and a Linear Discriminative
Function (LDF). The preliminary results are shown.
Abstract: In the world of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networking
different protocols have been developed to make the resource sharing
or information retrieval more efficient. The SemPeer protocol is a
new layer on Gnutella that transforms the connections of the nodes
based on semantic information to make information retrieval more
efficient. However, this transformation causes high clustering in the
network that decreases the number of nodes reached, therefore the
probability of finding a document is also decreased. In this paper we
describe a mathematical model for the Gnutella and SemPeer
protocols that captures clustering-related issues, followed by a
proposition to modify the SemPeer protocol to achieve moderate
clustering. This modification is a sort of link management for the
individual nodes that allows the SemPeer protocol to be more
efficient, because the probability of a successful query in the P2P
network is reasonably increased. For the validation of the models, we
evaluated a series of simulations that supported our results.
Abstract: The induction hardening machines are utilized in
the industries which modify machine parts and tools needed to
achieve high ware resistance. This paper describes the model of
induction heating process design of inverter circuit and the results
of induction surface hardening of heating coil. In the design of
heating coil, the shape and the turn numbers of the coil are very
important design factors because they decide the overall operating
performance of induction heater including resonant frequency, Q
factor, efficiency and power factor. The performance will be tested
by experiments in some cases high frequency induction hardening
machine.
Abstract: In this paper, an experimentation to enhance the
visibility of hot objects in a thermal image acquired with ordinary
digital camera is reported, after the applications of lowpass and
median filters to suppress the distracting granular noises. The
common thresholding and slicing techniques were used on the
histogram at different gray levels, followed by a subjective
comparative evaluation. The best result came out with the threshold
level 115 and the number of slices 3.
Abstract: Bridge is an architectural symbol in Iran as Badgir
(wind catcher); fire temples and arch are vaults are such. Therefore, from the very old ages, construction of bridges in Iran has mixed with
architecture, social customs, alms and charity and holiness. Since long ago, from Mad, Achaemenid, Parthian and Sassanid times which construction of bridges got an inseparable relation with social dependency and architecture, based on those dependency bridges and
dams got holy names; as Dokhtar castle and Dokhtar bridges were constructed. This method continued even after Islam and whenever
Iranians got free from political fights and the immunity of roads were established the bridge construction did also prospered. In ancient
times bridge construction passes through it growing and completion process and in Sassanid time in some way it reached to the peak of art
and glory; as after Islam especially during 4th. century (Arab calendar) it put behind a period of glory and in Safavid time it
reached to an exceptional glory and magnificence by constructing
glorious bridges on Zayandeh Roud River in Isfahan.
Having a combined style and changeability into bridge barrier, some of these bridges develop into magnificent constructions. The
sustainable structures, mentioned above, are constructed for various
reasons as follows: connecting two sides of a river, storing water,
controlling floods, using water energy to operate water windmills, making lanes of streams for farms- use, and building recreational
places for people, etc. These studies carried in bridges reveals the fact
that in construction and designing mentioned above, lots of
technological factors have been taken into consideration such as
exceeding floods in the rives, hydraulic and hydrology of the rivers and bridges, geology, foundation, structure, construction material, and adopting appropriate executing methods, all of which are being analyzed in this article.
Abstract: The effect of gamma irradiation on micro-hardness of polymer blends of poly (ethyl methacrylate)(PEMA) and poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) has been investigated to detect the radiation induced crosslinking. The blend system comprises a noncrystallizable polymer, PEMA and a crystallizable polymer, PEO. On irradiation, the overall hardness of the blend specimens for different dose levels infers occurrence of a crosslinking process. The radiation-induced crosslinking was greater for blends having lower concentration of PEO. However, increase in radiation dose causes softening of blend system due to radiation induced scissioning of the chains
Abstract: This paper proposes a new approach for image encryption
using a combination of different permutation techniques.
The main idea behind the present work is that an image can be
viewed as an arrangement of bits, pixels and blocks. The intelligible
information present in an image is due to the correlations among the
bits, pixels and blocks in a given arrangement. This perceivable information
can be reduced by decreasing the correlation among the bits,
pixels and blocks using certain permutation techniques. This paper
presents an approach for a random combination of the aforementioned
permutations for image encryption. From the results, it is observed
that the permutation of bits is effective in significantly reducing the
correlation thereby decreasing the perceptual information, whereas
the permutation of pixels and blocks are good at producing higher
level security compared to bit permutation. A random combination
method employing all the three techniques thus is observed to be
useful for tactical security applications, where protection is needed
only against a casual observer.
Abstract: In this paper, a Bayesian Network (BN) based system
is presented for providing clinical decision support to healthcare
practitioners in rural or remote areas of India for young infants or
children up to the age of 5 years. The government is unable to
appoint child specialists in rural areas because of inadequate number
of available pediatricians. It leads to a high Infant Mortality Rate
(IMR). In such a scenario, Intelligent Pediatric System provides a
realistic solution. The prototype of an intelligent system has been
developed that involves a knowledge component called an Intelligent
Pediatric Assistant (IPA); and User Agents (UA) along with their
Graphical User Interfaces (GUI). The GUI of UA provides the
interface to the healthcare practitioner for submitting sign-symptoms
and displaying the expert opinion as suggested by IPA. Depending
upon the observations, the IPA decides the diagnosis and the
treatment plan. The UA and IPA form client-server architecture for
knowledge sharing.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose the low-MAC FEC controller for practical implementation of JPEG2000 image transmission using IEEE 802.15.4. The proposed low-MAC FEC controller has very small HW size and spends little computation to estimate channel state. Because of this advantage, it is acceptable to apply IEEE 802.15.4 which has to operate more than 1 year with battery. For the image transmission, we integrate the low-MAC FEC controller and RCPC coder in sensor node of LR-WPAN. The modified sensor node has increase of 3% hardware size than conventional zigbee sensor node.
Abstract: Variable channel conditions in underwater networks,
and variable distances between sensors due to water current, leads to
variable bit error rate (BER). This variability in BER has great
effects on energy efficiency of error correction techniques used. In
this paper an efficient energy adaptive hybrid error correction
technique (AHECT) is proposed. AHECT adaptively changes error
technique from pure retransmission (ARQ) in a low BER case to a
hybrid technique with variable encoding rates (ARQ & FEC) in a
high BER cases. An adaptation algorithm depends on a precalculated
packet acceptance rate (PAR) look-up table, current BER,
packet size and error correction technique used is proposed. Based
on this adaptation algorithm a periodically 3-bit feedback is added to
the acknowledgment packet to state which error correction technique
is suitable for the current channel conditions and distance.
Comparative studies were done between this technique and other
techniques, and the results show that AHECT is more energy
efficient and has high probability of success than all those
techniques.
Abstract: Opportunistic Data Forwarding (ODF) has drawn much attention in mobile adhoc networking research in recent years. The effectiveness of ODF in MANET depends on a suitable routing protocol which provides a powerful source routing services. PLSR is featured by source routing, loop free and small routing overhead. The update messages in PLSR are integrated into a tree structure and no need to time stamp routing updates which reduces the routing overhead.
Abstract: This paper introduces two decoders for binary linear
codes based on Metaheuristics. The first one uses a genetic algorithm
and the second is based on a combination genetic algorithm with
a feed forward neural network. The decoder based on the genetic
algorithms (DAG) applied to BCH and convolutional codes give good
performances compared to Chase-2 and Viterbi algorithm respectively
and reach the performances of the OSD-3 for some Residue
Quadratic (RQ) codes. This algorithm is less complex for linear
block codes of large block length; furthermore their performances
can be improved by tuning the decoder-s parameters, in particular the
number of individuals by population and the number of generations.
In the second algorithm, the search space, in contrast to DAG which
was limited to the code word space, now covers the whole binary
vector space. It tries to elude a great number of coding operations
by using a neural network. This reduces greatly the complexity of
the decoder while maintaining comparable performances.
Abstract: This paper deals with condition monitoring of electric switch machine for railway points. Point machine, as a complex electro-mechanical device, switch the track between two alternative routes. There has been an increasing interest in railway safety and the optimal management of railway equipments maintenance, e.g. point machine, in order to enhance railway service quality and reduce system failure. This paper explores the development of Kolmogorov- Smirnov (K-S) test to detect some point failures (external to the machine, slide chairs, fixing, stretchers, etc), while the point machine (inside the machine) is in its proper condition. Time-domain stator Current signatures of normal (healthy) and faulty points are taken by 3 Hall Effect sensors and are analyzed by K-S test. The test is simulated by creating three types of such failures, namely putting a hard stone and a soft stone between stock rail and switch blades as obstacles and also slide chairs- friction. The test has been applied for those three faults which the results show that K-S test can effectively be developed for the aim of other point failures detection, which their current signatures deviate parametrically from the healthy current signature. K-S test as an analysis technique, assuming that any defect has a specific probability distribution. Empirical cumulative distribution functions (ECDF) are used to differentiate these probability distributions. This test works based on the null hypothesis that ECDF of target distribution is statistically similar to ECDF of reference distribution. Therefore by comparing a given current signature (as target signal) from unknown switch state to a number of template signatures (as reference signal) from known switch states, it is possible to identify which is the most likely state of the point machine under analysis.
Abstract: Wireless sensor networks are consisted of hundreds or
thousands of small sensors that have limited resources.
Energy-efficient techniques are the main issue of wireless sensor
networks. This paper proposes an energy efficient agent-based
framework in wireless sensor networks. We adopt biologically
inspired approaches for wireless sensor networks. Agent operates
automatically with their behavior policies as a gene. Agent aggregates
other agents to reduce communication and gives high priority to nodes
that have enough energy to communicate. Agent behavior policies are
optimized by genetic operation at the base station. Simulation results
show that our proposed framework increases the lifetime of each node.
Each agent selects a next-hop node with neighbor information and
behavior policies. Our proposed framework provides self-healing,
self-configuration, self-optimization properties to sensor nodes.
Abstract: In recent years, the number of natural disasters in Laos has a trend to increase, especially the disaster of flood. To make a flood plan risk management in the future, it is necessary to understand and analyze the characteristics of the rainfall and Mekong River level data. To reduce the damage, this paper presents the flood risk analysis in Luangprabang and Vientiane, the prefecture of Laos. In detail, the relationship between the rainfall and the Mekong River level has evaluated and appropriate countermeasure for flood was discussed.
