Abstract: Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a recent class of statistical classification and regression techniques playing an increasing role in applications to detection problems in various engineering problems, notably in statistical signal processing, pattern recognition, image analysis, and communication systems. In this paper, SVM is applied to an infrared (IR) binary communication system with different types of channel models including Ricean multipath fading and partially developed scattering channel with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) at the receiver. The structure and performance of SVM in terms of the bit error rate (BER) metric is derived and simulated for these channel stochastic models and the computational complexity of the implementation, in terms of average computational time per bit, is also presented. The performance of SVM is then compared to classical binary signal maximum likelihood detection using a matched filter driven by On-Off keying (OOK) modulation. We found that the performance of SVM is superior to that of the traditional optimal detection schemes used in statistical communication, especially for very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) ranges. For large SNR, the performance of the SVM is similar to that of the classical detectors. The implication of these results is that SVM can prove very beneficial to IR communication systems that notoriously suffer from low SNR at the cost of increased computational complexity.
Abstract: The presence of harmonic in power system is a major
concerned to power engineers for many years. With the increasing
usage of nonlinear loads in power systems, the harmonic pollution
becomes more serious. One of the widely used computation
algorithm for harmonic analysis is fast Fourier transform (FFT). In
this paper, a harmonic analyzer using FFT was implemented on
TMS320C6713 DSK. The supply voltage of 240 V 59 Hz is stepped
down to 5V using a voltage divider in order to match the power
rating of the DSK input. The output from the DSK was displayed on
oscilloscope and Code Composer Studio™ software. This work has
demonstrated the possibility of analyzing the 240V power supply
harmonic content using the DSK board.
Abstract: The development and extension of large cities induced
a need for shallow tunnel in soft ground of building areas. Estimation
of ground settlement caused by the tunnel excavation is important
engineering point. In this paper, prediction of surface subsidence
caused by tunneling in one section of seventh line of Tehran subway
is considered. On the basis of studied geotechnical conditions of the
region, tunnel with the length of 26.9km has been excavated applying
a mechanized method using an EPB-TBM with a diameter of 9.14m.
In this regard, settlement is estimated utilizing both analytical and
numerical finite element method. The numerical method shows that
the value of settlement in this section is 5cm. Besides, the analytical
consequences (Bobet and Loganathan-Polous) are 5.29 and 12.36cm,
respectively. According to results of this study, due tosaturation of
this section, there are good agreement between Bobet and numerical
methods. Therefore, tunneling processes in this section needs a
special consolidation measurement and support system before the
passage of tunnel boring machine.
Abstract: Society has grown to rely on Internet services, and the
number of Internet users increases every day. As more and more
users become connected to the network, the window of opportunity
for malicious users to do their damage becomes very great and
lucrative. The objective of this paper is to incorporate different
techniques into classier system to detect and classify intrusion from
normal network packet. Among several techniques, Steady State
Genetic-based Machine Leaning Algorithm (SSGBML) will be used
to detect intrusions. Where Steady State Genetic Algorithm (SSGA),
Simple Genetic Algorithm (SGA), Modified Genetic Algorithm and
Zeroth Level Classifier system are investigated in this research.
SSGA is used as a discovery mechanism instead of SGA. SGA
replaces all old rules with new produced rule preventing old good
rules from participating in the next rule generation. Zeroth Level
Classifier System is used to play the role of detector by matching
incoming environment message with classifiers to determine whether
the current message is normal or intrusion and receiving feedback
from environment. Finally, in order to attain the best results,
Modified SSGA will enhance our discovery engine by using Fuzzy
Logic to optimize crossover and mutation probability. The
experiments and evaluations of the proposed method were performed
with the KDD 99 intrusion detection dataset.
Abstract: Laboratory activities have produced benefits in
student learning. With current drives of new technology resources
and evolving era of education methods, renewal status of learning
and teaching in laboratory methods are in progress, for both learners
and the educators. To enhance learning outcomes in laboratory works
particularly in engineering practices and testing, learning via handson
by instruction may not sufficient. This paper describes and
compares techniques and implementation of traditional (expository)
with open-ended laboratory (problem-based) for two consecutive
cohorts studying environmental laboratory course in civil engineering
program. The transition of traditional to problem-based findings and
effect were investigated in terms of course assessment student
feedback survey, course outcome learning measurement and student
performance grades. It was proved that students have demonstrated
better performance in their grades and 12% increase in the course
outcome (CO) in problem-based open-ended laboratory style than
traditional method; although in perception, students has responded
less favorable in their feedback.
Abstract: Today, the Internet based communication has widen
the opportunity of event monitoring system in the medical field.
There is always a need of analyzing and designing secure and reliable
mobile communication between the hospital and biomedical
engineers mobile units. This study has been carried out to find
possible solution using SIP-based event notification for alerting the
technical staff about the Biomedical Device (BMD) status and
Patients treatment session. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) can
be used to create a medical event notification system. SIP can work
on a variety of devices. Its adoption as the protocol of choice for third
generation wireless networks allows for a robust and scalable
environment. One of the advantages of SIP is that it supports personal
mobility through the separation of user addressing and device
addressing. The solution for Telemed alert notification system is
based on SIP - Specific Event Notification. The aim of this project is
to extend mobility service to the hospital technicians who are using
Telemedicine system.
Abstract: Mathematical, graphical and intuitive models are often
constructed in the development process of computational systems.
The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is one of the most popular
modeling languages used by practicing software engineers. This
paper critically examines UML models and suggests an augmented
use case view with the addition of new constructs for modeling
software. It also shows how a use case diagram can be enhanced. The
improved modeling constructs are presented with examples for
clarifying important design and implementation issues.
Abstract: Nowadays, engineering ceramics have significant
applications in different industries such as; automotive, aerospace,
electrical, electronics and even martial industries due to their
attractive physical and mechanical properties like very high hardness
and strength at elevated temperatures, chemical stability, low friction
and high wear resistance. However, these interesting properties plus
low heat conductivity make their machining processes too hard,
costly and time consuming. Many attempts have been made in order
to make the grinding process of engineering ceramics easier and
many scientists have tried to find proper techniques to economize
ceramics' machining processes. This paper proposes a new diamond
plunge grinding technique using ultrasonic vibration for grinding
Alumina ceramic (Al2O3). For this purpose, a set of laboratory
equipments have been designed and simulated using Finite Element
Method (FEM) and constructed in order to be used in various
measurements. The results obtained have been compared with the
conventional plunge grinding process without ultrasonic vibration
and indicated that the surface roughness and fracture strength
improved and the grinding forces decreased.
Abstract: The increased number of automobiles in recent years
has resulted in great demand for fossil fuel. This has led to the
development of automobile by using alternative fuels which include
gaseous fuels, biofuels and vegetables oils as fuel. Energy from
biomass and more specific bio-diesel is one of the opportunities that
could cover the future demand of fossil fuel shortage. Biomass in the
form of cashew nut shell represents a new energy source and
abundant source of energy in India. The bio-fuel is derived from
cashew nut shell oil and its blend with diesel are promising
alternative fuel for diesel engine. In this work the pyrolysis Cashew
Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL)-Diesel Blends (CDB) was used to run the
Direct Injection (DI) diesel engine. The experiments were conducted
with various blends of CNSL and Diesel namely B20, B40, B60, B80
and B100. The results are compared with neat diesel operation. The
brake thermal efficiency was decreased for blends of CNSL and
Diesel except the lower blends of B20. The brake thermal efficiency
of B20 is nearly closer to that of diesel fuel. Also the emission level
of the all CNSL and Diesel blends was increased compared to neat
diesel. The higher viscosity and lower volatility of CNSL leads to
poor mixture formation and hence lower brake thermal efficiency and
higher emission levels. The higher emission level can be reduced by
adding suitable additives and oxygenates with CNSL and Diesel
blends.
Abstract: Reliability is one of the most important quality attributes of software. Based on the approach of Reussner and the approach of Cheung, we proposed the reliability prediction model of component-based software architectures. Also, the value of the model is shown through the experimental evaluation on a web server system.
Abstract: In a particular case of behavioural model reduction by ANNs, a validity domain shortening has been found. In mechanics, as in other domains, the notion of validity domain allows the engineer to choose a valid model for a particular analysis or simulation. In the study of mechanical behaviour for a cantilever beam (using linear and non-linear models), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) Backpropagation (BP) networks have been applied as model reduction technique. This reduced model is constructed to be more efficient than the non-reduced model. Within a less extended domain, the ANN reduced model estimates correctly the non-linear response, with a lower computational cost. It has been found that the neural network model is not able to approximate the linear behaviour while it does approximate the non-linear behaviour very well. The details of the case are provided with an example of the cantilever beam behaviour modelling.
Abstract: Day by day technology increases and problems
associated with this technology also increase. Several researches
were carried out to investigate the deployment of such material safely
in geotechnical engineering in particular and civil engineering in
general. However, different types of waste material have such as
cement duct, fly ash and slag been proven to be suitable in several
applications. In this research cement dust mixed with different
percentages of sand will be used in some civil engineering
application as will be explained later in this paper throughout filed
and laboratory test. The used mixer (waste material with sand) prove
high performance, durability to environmental condition, low cost
and high benefits. At higher cement dust ratio, small cement ratio is
valuable for compressive strength and permeability. Also at small
cement dust ratio higher cement ratio is valuable for compressive
strength.
Abstract: This paper unifies power optimization approaches in
various energy converters, such as: thermal, solar, chemical, and
electrochemical engines, in particular fuel cells. Thermodynamics
leads to converter-s efficiency and limiting power. Efficiency
equations serve to solve problems of upgrading and downgrading of
resources. While optimization of steady systems applies the
differential calculus and Lagrange multipliers, dynamic optimization
involves variational calculus and dynamic programming. In reacting
systems chemical affinity constitutes a prevailing component of an
overall efficiency, thus the power is analyzed in terms of an active
part of chemical affinity. The main novelty of the present paper in the
energy yield context consists in showing that the generalized heat
flux Q (involving the traditional heat flux q plus the product of
temperature and the sum products of partial entropies and fluxes of
species) plays in complex cases (solar, chemical and electrochemical)
the same role as the traditional heat q in pure heat engines.
The presented methodology is also applied to power limits in fuel
cells as to systems which are electrochemical flow engines propelled
by chemical reactions. The performance of fuel cells is determined by
magnitudes and directions of participating streams and mechanism of
electric current generation. Voltage lowering below the reversible
voltage is a proper measure of cells imperfection. The voltage losses,
called polarization, include the contributions of three main sources:
activation, ohmic and concentration. Examples show power maxima
in fuel cells and prove the relevance of the extension of the thermal
machine theory to chemical and electrochemical systems. The main
novelty of the present paper in the FC context consists in introducing
an effective or reduced Gibbs free energy change between products p
and reactants s which take into account the decrease of voltage and
power caused by the incomplete conversion of the overall reaction.
Abstract: Maintenance costs incurred on building differs. The
difference can be as results of the types, functions, age, building
health index, size, form height, location and complexity of the
building. These are contributing to the difficulty in maintenance
development of deterministic maintenance cost model. This paper is
concerns with reporting the preliminary findings on the creation of
building maintenance cost distributions for universities in Malaysia.
This study is triggered by the need to provide guides on maintenance
costs distributions for decision making. For this purpose, a survey
questionnaire was conducted to investigate the distribution of
maintenance costs in the universities. Altogether, responses were
received from twenty universities comprising both private and
publicly owned. The research found that engineering services,
roofing and finishes were the elements contributing the larger
segment of the maintenance costs. Furthermore, the study indicates
the significance of maintenance cost distribution as decision making
tool towards maintenance management.
Abstract: Sharing motivations of viral advertisements by
consumers and the impacts of these advertisements on the
perceptions for brand will be questioned in this study. Three
fundamental questions are answered in the study. These are
advertisement watching and sharing motivations of individuals,
criteria of liking viral advertisement and the impact of individual
attitudes for viral advertisement on brand perception respectively.
This study will be carried out via a viral advertisement which was
practiced in Turkey. The data will be collected by survey method and
the sample of the study consists of individuals who experienced the
practice of sample advertisement. Data will be collected by online
survey method and will be analyzed by using SPSS statistical
package program.
Recently traditional advertisement mind have been changing. New
advertising approaches which have significant impacts on consumers
have been argued. Viral advertising is a modernist advertisement
mind which offers significant advantages to brands apart from
traditional advertising channels such as television, radio and
magazines. Viral advertising also known as Electronic Word-of-
Mouth (eWOM) consists of free spread of convincing messages sent
by brands among interpersonal communication. When compared to
the traditional advertising, a more provocative thematic approach is
argued.
The foundation of this approach is to create advertisements that
are worth sharing with others by consumers. When that fact is taken
into consideration, in a manner of speaking it can also be stated that
viral advertising is media engineering.
The content worth sharing makes people being a volunteer
spokesman of a brand and strengthens the emotional bonds among
brand and consumer. Especially for some sectors in countries which
are having traditional advertising channel limitations, viral
advertising creates vital advantages.
Abstract: As wind, solar and other clean and green energy
sources gain popularity worldwide, engineers are seeking ways to
make renewable energy systems more affordable and to integrate
them with existing ac power grids. In the present paper an attempt
has been made for integrating the PV arrays to the smart nano grid
using an artificial intelligent (AI) based solar powered cascade multilevel
inverter. The AI based controller switching scheme has been
used for improving the power quality by reducing the Total Harmonic
Distortion (THD) of the multi-level inverter output voltage.
Abstract: The element of justice or al-‘adl in the context of
Islamic critical thinking deals with the notion of justice in a thinking
process which critically rationalizes the truth in a fair and objective
manner with no irrelevant interference that can jeopardize a sound
judgment. This Islamic axiological element is vital in technological
decision making as it addresses the issues of religious values and
ethics that are primarily set to fulfill the purpose of human life on
earth. The main objective of this study was to examine and analyze
the perception of Muslim engineering students in Malaysian higher
education institutions towards the concept of al-‘adl as an essential
element of Islamic critical thinking. The study employed mixed
methods approach that comprises data collection from the
questionnaire survey and the interview responses. A total of 557
Muslim engineering undergraduates from six Malaysian universities
participated in the study. The study generally indicated that Muslim
engineering undergraduates in the higher institutions have rather
good comprehension and consciousness for al-‘adl with a slight
awareness on the importance of objective thinking. Nonetheless there
were a few items on the concept that have implied a comparatively
low perception on the rational justice in Islam as the means to grasp
the ultimate truth.
Abstract: Soil stabilization has been widely used to improve
soil strength and durability or to prevent erosion and dust generation.
Generally to reduce problems of clayey soils in engineering work and
to stabilize these soils additional materials are used. The most
common materials are lime, fly ash and cement. Using this materials,
although improve soil property , but in some cases due to financial
problems and the need to use special equipment are limited .One of
the best methods for stabilization clayey soils is neutralization the
clay particles. For this purpose we can use ion exchange materials.
Ion exchange solution like CBR plus can be used for soil
stabilization. One of the most important things in using CBR plus is
determination the amount of this solution for various soils with
different properties. In this study a laboratory experiment is conduct
to evaluate the ion exchange capacity of three soils with various
plasticity index (PI) to determine amount or required CBR plus
solution for soil stabilization.
Abstract: One of the main processes of supply chain
management is supplier selection process which its accurate
implementation can dramatically increase company competitiveness.
In presented article model developed based on the features of
second tiers suppliers and four scenarios are predicted in order to
help the decision maker (DM) in making up his/her mind. In addition
two tiers of suppliers have been considered as a chain of suppliers.
Then the proposed approach is solved by a method combined of
concepts of fuzzy set theory (FST) and linear programming (LP)
which has been nourished by real data extracted from an engineering
design and supplying parts company. At the end results reveal the
high importance of considering second tier suppliers features as
criteria for selecting the best supplier.
Abstract: Majority of Business Software Systems (BSS)
Development and Enhancement Projects (D&EP) fail to meet criteria
of their effectiveness, what leads to the considerable financial losses.
One of the fundamental reasons for such projects- exceptionally low
success rate are improperly derived estimates for their costs and time.
In the case of BSS D&EP these attributes are determined by the work
effort, meanwhile reliable and objective effort estimation still appears
to be a great challenge to the software engineering. Thus this paper is
aimed at presenting the most important synthetic conclusions coming
from the author-s own studies concerning the main factors of
effective BSS D&EP work effort estimation. Thanks to the rational
investment decisions made on the basis of reliable and objective
criteria it is possible to reduce losses caused not only by abandoned
projects but also by large scale of overrunning the time and costs of
BSS D&EP execution.
