Abstract: Wetting characteristics of reactive (Sn–0.7Cu solder)
and non– reactive (castor oil) wetting of liquids on Cu and Ag plated
Al substrates have been investigated. Solder spreading exhibited
capillary, gravity and viscous regimes. Oils did not exhibit noticeable
spreading regimes. Solder alloy showed better wettability on Ag
coated Al substrate compared to Cu plating. In the case of castor oil,
Cu coated Al substrate exhibited good wettability as compared to Ag
coated Al substrates. The difference in wettability during reactive
wetting of solder and non–reactive wetting of oils is attributed to the
change in the surface energies of Al substrates brought about by the
formation of intermetallic compounds (IMCs).
Abstract: One of the popular methods for recognition of facial
expressions such as happiness, sadness and surprise is based on
deformation of facial features. Motion vectors which show these
deformations can be specified by the optical flow. In this method, for
detecting emotions, the resulted set of motion vectors are compared
with standard deformation template that caused by facial expressions.
In this paper, a new method is introduced to compute the quantity of
likeness in order to make decision based on the importance of
obtained vectors from an optical flow approach. For finding the
vectors, one of the efficient optical flow method developed by
Gautama and VanHulle[17] is used. The suggested method has been
examined over Cohn-Kanade AU-Coded Facial Expression Database,
one of the most comprehensive collections of test images available.
The experimental results show that our method could correctly
recognize the facial expressions in 94% of case studies. The results
also show that only a few number of image frames (three frames) are
sufficient to detect facial expressions with rate of success of about
83.3%. This is a significant improvement over the available methods.
Abstract: Using spatial models as a shared common basis of
information about the environment for different kinds of contextaware
systems has been a heavily researched topic in the last years.
Thereby the research focused on how to create, to update, and to
merge spatial models so as to enable highly dynamic, consistent and
coherent spatial models at large scale. In this paper however, we
want to concentrate on how context-aware applications could use this
information so as to adapt their behavior according to the situation
they are in. The main idea is to provide the spatial model
infrastructure with a situation recognition component based on
generic situation templates. A situation template is – as part of a
much larger situation template library – an abstract, machinereadable
description of a certain basic situation type, which could be
used by different applications to evaluate their situation. In this
paper, different theoretical and practical issues – technical, ethical
and philosophical ones – are discussed important for understanding
and developing situation dependent systems based on situation
templates. A basic system design is presented which allows for the
reasoning with uncertain data using an improved version of a
learning algorithm for the automatic adaption of situation templates.
Finally, for supporting the development of adaptive applications, we
present a new situation-aware adaptation concept based on
workflows.
Abstract: Lactic acid alone and its combined application with
nisin were evaluated for reducing population of naturally occurring
microorganisms on chilled shrimp. Fresh shrimps were dipped in 0,
1.0% and 2.0% (v/v) lactic acid alone and their combined application
with 0.04 (g/L/kg) nisin solution for 10 min. Total plate counts of
aerobic bacteria (TPCs), Psychrotrophic counts, population of
Pseudomonas spp., H2S producing bacteria and Lactic acid bacteria
(LAB) on shrimps were determined during storage at 4 °C. The
results indicated that total plate counts were 2.91 and 2.63 log CFU/g
higher on untreated shrimps after 7 and 14 days of storage,
respectively, than on shrimps treated with 2.0% lactic acid combined
with 0.04 (g/L/kg) nisin. Both concentrations of lactic acid indicated
significant reduction on Pseudomonas counts during storage, while
2.0% lactic acid combined with nisin indicated the highest reduction.
In addition, H2S producing bacteria were more sensitive to high
concentration of lactic acid combined with nisin during storage.
Abstract: Bone marrow-derived stem cells have been widely
studied as an alternative source of stem cells. Mesenchymal stem
cells (MSCs) were mostly investigated and studies showed MSCs can
promote neurogenesis. Little is known about the non-mesenchymal
mononuclear cell fraction, which contains both hematopoietic and
nonhematopoietic cells, including monocytes and endothelial
progenitor cells. This study focused on unfractionated bone marrow
mononuclear cells (BMMCs), which remained 72 h after MSCs were
adhered to the culture plates. We showed that BMMC-conditioned
medium promoted morphological changes of human SH-SY5Y
neuroblastoma cells from an epithelial-like phenotype towards a
neuron-like phenotype as indicated by an increase in neurite
outgrowth, like those observed in retinoic acid (RA)-treated cells.
The result could be explained by the effects of trophic factors
released from BMMCs, as shown in the RT-PCR results that
BMMCs expressed nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived
neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF).
Similar results on the cell proliferation rate were also observed
between RA-treated cells and cells cultured in BMMC-conditioned
medium, suggesting that cells creased proliferating and differentiated
into a neuronal phenotype. Using real-time RT-PCR, a significantly
increased expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) mRNA in SHSY5Y
cells indicated that BMMC-conditioned medium induced
catecholaminergic identities in differentiated SH-SY5Y cells.
Abstract: The presence of a vertical fatigue crack in the web of
a plate girder subjected to pure bending influences the bending
moment capacity of the girder. The growth of the crack may lead to
premature elastic failure due to flange local yielding, flange local
buckling, or web local buckling. Approximate expressions for the
bending moment capacities corresponding to these failure modes
were formulated. Finite element analyses were then used to validate
the expressions. The expressions were employed to assess the effects
of crack length on the capacity. Neglecting brittle fracture, tension
buckling, and ductile failure modes, it was found that typical girders
are governed by the capacity associated with flange local yielding as
influenced by the crack. Concluding, a possible use of the capacity
expressions in girder design was demonstrated.
Abstract: Mercury is a natural occurring element and present in
various concentrations in the environment. Due to its toxic effects, it
is desirable to research mercury sensitive materials to adsorb
mercury. This paper describes the preparation of Au nanoparticles for
mercury adsorption by using a microwave (MW)-polyol method in
the presence of three different Sodium Chloride (NaCl)
concentrations (10, 20 and 30 mM). Mixtures of spherical, triangular,
octahedral, decahedral particles and 1-D product were obtained using
this rapid method. Sizes and shapes was found strongly depend on the
concentrations of NaCl. Without NaCl concentration, spherical,
triangular plates, octahedral, decahedral nanoparticles and 1D
product were produced. At the lower NaCl concentration (10 mM),
spherical, octahedral and decahedral nanoparticles were present,
while spherical and decahedral nanoparticles were preferentially form
by using 20 mM of NaCl concentration. Spherical, triangular plates,
octahedral and decahedral nanoparticles were obtained at the highest
NaCl concentration (30 mM). The amount of mercury adsorbed using
20 ppm mercury solution is the highest (67.5 %) for NaCl
concentration of 30 mM. The high yield of polygonal particles will
increase the mercury adsorption. In addition, the adsorption of
mercury is also due to the sizes of the particles. The sizes of particles
become smaller with increasing NaCl concentrations (size ranges, 5-
16 nm) than those synthesized without addition of NaCl (size ranges
11-32 nm). It is concluded that NaCl concentrations affects the
formation of sizes and shapes of Au nanoparticles thus affects the
mercury adsorption.
Abstract: Before performing polymerase chain reactions (PCR), a feasible primer set is required. Many primer design methods have been proposed for design a feasible primer set. However, the majority of these methods require a relatively long time to obtain an optimal solution since large quantities of template DNA need to be analyzed. Furthermore, the designed primer sets usually do not provide a specific PCR product. In recent years, evolutionary computation has been applied to PCR primer design and yielded promising results. In this paper, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed to solve primer design problems associated with providing a specific product for PCR experiments. A test set of the gene CYP1A1, associated with a heightened lung cancer risk was analyzed and the comparison of accuracy and running time with the genetic algorithm (GA) and memetic algorithm (MA) was performed. A comparison of results indicated that the proposed PSO method for primer design finds optimal or near-optimal primer sets and effective PCR products in a relatively short time.
Abstract: Adsorption of methanol and ethanol over mesoporous
siliceous material are studied in the current paper. The pure
mesoporous silica is prepared using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as
silica source and dodecylamine as template at low pH. The prepared
material was characterized using nitrogen adsorption,nX-ray
diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The
adsorption kinetics of methanol and ethanol from aqueous solution
were studied over the prepared mesoporous silica material. The
percent removal of alcohol was calculated per unit mass of adsorbent
used. The 1st order model is found to be in agreement with both
adsorbates while the 2nd order model fit the adsorption of methanol
only.
Abstract: This paper describes a platform that faces the main
research areas for e-learning educational contents. Reusability tackles
the possibility to use contents in different courses reducing costs and
exploiting available data from repositories. In our approach the
production of educational material is based on templates to reuse
learning objects. In terms of interoperability the main challenge lays
on reaching the audience through different platforms. E-learning
solution must track social consumption evolution where nowadays
lots of multimedia contents are accessed through the social networks.
Our work faces it by implementing a platform for generation of
multimedia presentations focused on the new paradigm related to
social media. The system produces videos-courses on top of web
standard SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language)
ready to be published and shared. Regarding interfaces it is
mandatory to satisfy user needs and ease communication. To
overcome it the platform deploys virtual teachers that provide natural
interfaces while multimodal features remove barriers to pupils with
disabilities.

the distinct features of narratives, they are useful for supporting human
reasoning processes. However, many useful narratives become
residuals in organizations or human minds nowadays. Researchers
have contributed effort to investigate and improve narrative generation
processes. This paper attempts to contemplate essential components in
narratives and explore a computational approach to acquire and extract
knowledge to generate narratives. The methodology and significant
benefit for decision support are presented.
Abstract: A transient heat transfer mathematical model for the
prediction of temperature distribution in the car body during primer
baking has been developed by considering the thermal radiation and
convection in the furnace chamber and transient heat conduction
governing equations in the car framework. The car cockpit is
considered like a structure with six flat plates, four vertical plates
representing the car doors and the rear and front panels. The other
two flat plates are the car roof and floor. The transient heat
conduction in each flat plate is modeled by the lumped capacitance
method. Comparison with the experimental data shows that the heat
transfer model works well for the prediction of thermal behavior of
the car body in the curing furnace, with deviations below 5%.
Abstract: A high performance thin layer chromatography
system (HPTLC) for the separation of vitamin B2 and B12 has been
developed. The separation was successfully using a solvent system of
methanol, water, ammonia 7.3.1 (V/V) as mobile phase on HPTLC
plates impregnated with boric acid. The effect of other mobile phases
on the separation of vitamins was also examined. The method is
based on different behavior of investigated compounds in
impregnated TLC plates with different amount of boric acid. The Rf
values of vitamin B2 and B12 are considered on non impregnated
and impregnated silica gel HPTLC plate with boric acid. The effect
of boric acid in the mobile phase and on HPTLC plates on the RF
values of the vitamins has also been studied.
Abstract: Stress analysis of functionally graded composite plates
composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is
investigated using 3-D finite element method. In FGM layer, material
properties are assumed to be varied continuously in the thickness
direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the
volume fraction of a ceramic and metal. The 3-D finite element model
is adopted by using an 18-node solid element to analyze more
accurately the variation of material properties in the thickness
direction. Numerical results are compared for three types of materials.
In the analysis, the tensile and the compressive stresses are
summarized for various FGM thickness ratios, volume fraction
distributions, geometric parameters and mechanical loads.

Abstract: Moulded parts contribute to more than 70% of
components in products. However, common defects particularly in
plastic injection moulding exist such as: warpage, shrinkage, sink
marks, and weld lines. In this paper Taguchi experimental design
methods are applied to reduce the warpage defect of thin plate
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and are demonstrated in two
levels; namely, orthogonal arrays of Taguchi and the Analysis of
Variance (ANOVA). Eight trials have been run in which the optimal
parameters that can minimize the warpage defect in factorial
experiment are obtained. The results obtained from ANOVA
approach analysis with respect to those derived from MINITAB
illustrate the most significant factors which may cause warpage in
injection moulding process. Moreover, ANOVA approach in
comparison with other approaches like S/N ratio is more accurate and
with the interaction of factors it is possible to achieve higher and the
better outcomes.
Abstract: This paper presents a CFD analysis of the flow around
a 30° inclined flat plate of infinite span. Numerical predictions have
been compared to experimental measurements, in order to assess the
potential of the finite volume code of determining the aerodynamic
forces acting on a flat plate invested by a fluid stream of infinite
extent.
Several turbulence models and spatial node distributions have
been tested and flow field characteristics in the neighborhood of the
flat plate have been numerically investigated, allowing the
development of a preliminary procedure to be used as guidance in
selecting the appropriate grid configuration and the corresponding
turbulence model for the prediction of the flow field over a twodimensional
inclined plate.
Abstract: This paper proposes evaluation of sound parameterization methods in recognizing some spoken Arabic words, namely digits from zero to nine. Each isolated spoken word is represented by a single template based on a specific recognition feature, and the recognition is based on the Euclidean distance from those templates. The performance analysis of recognition is based on four parameterization features: the Burg Spectrum Analysis, the Walsh Spectrum Analysis, the Thomson Multitaper Spectrum Analysis and the Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) features. The main aim of this paper was to compare, analyze, and discuss the outcomes of spoken Arabic digits recognition systems based on the selected recognition features. The results acqired confirm that the use of MFCC features is a very promising method in recognizing Spoken Arabic digits.
Abstract: Analytical solution of the first-order and third-order
shear deformation theories are developed to study the free vibration
behavior of simply supported functionally graded plates. The
material properties of plate are assumed to be graded in the thickness
direction as a power law distribution of volume fraction of the
constituents. The governing equations of functionally graded plates
are established by applying the Hamilton's principle and are solved
by using the Navier solution method. The influence of side-tothickness
ratio and constituent of volume fraction on the natural
frequencies are studied. The results are validated with the known
data in the literature.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a robust scheme to work face alignment and recognition under various influences. For face representation, illumination influence and variable expressions are the important factors, especially the accuracy of facial localization and face recognition. In order to solve those of factors, we propose a robust approach to overcome these problems. This approach consists of two phases. One phase is preprocessed for face images by means of the proposed illumination normalization method. The location of facial features can fit more efficient and fast based on the proposed image blending. On the other hand, based on template matching, we further improve the active shape models (called as IASM) to locate the face shape more precise which can gain the recognized rate in the next phase. The other phase is to process feature extraction by using principal component analysis and face recognition by using support vector machine classifiers. The results show that this proposed method can obtain good facial localization and face recognition with varied illumination and local distortion.
