Abstract: In this paper, the formulation of a new group explicit
method with a fourth order accuracy is described in solving the two
dimensional Helmholtz equation. The formulation is based on the
nine-point fourth order compact finite difference approximation
formula. The complexity analysis of the developed scheme is also
presented. Several numerical experiments were conducted to test the
feasibility of the developed scheme. Comparisons with other existing
schemes will be reported and discussed. Preliminary results indicate
that this method is a viable alternative high accuracy solver to the
Helmholtz equation.
Abstract: Many problems in science and engineering field require
the solution of shifted linear systems with multiple right hand
sides and multiple shifts. To solve such systems efficiently, the
implicitly restarted global GMRES algorithm is extended in this
paper. However, the shift invariant property could no longer hold over
the augmented global Krylov subspace due to adding the harmonic
Ritz matrices. To remedy this situation, we enforce the collinearity
condition on the shifted system and propose shift implicitly restarted
global GMRES. The new method not only improves the convergence
but also has a potential to simultaneously compute approximate
solution for the shifted systems using only as many matrix vector
multiplications as the solution of the seed system requires. In
addition, some numerical experiments also confirm the effectiveness
of our method.
Abstract: The biosynthesis of nanoparticles by microorganisms,
on the contrary to chemical synthesis, is an environmentally-friendly
process which has low energy requirements. In this investigation, we
used the microorganism Geobacillus wiegelii, strain GWE1, an
aerobic thermophile belonging to genus Geobacillus, isolated from a
drying oven. This microorganism has the ability to reduce selenite
evidenced by the change of color from colorless to red in the culture.
Elemental analysis and composition of the particles were verified
using transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray
analysis. The nanoparticles have a defined spherical shape and a
selenium elemental state. Previous experiments showed that the
presence of the whole microorganism for the reduction of selenite
was not necessary. The results strongly suggested that an intracellular
NADPH/NADH-dependent reductase mediates selenium
nanoparticles synthesis under aerobic conditions. The enzyme was
purified and identified by mass spectroscopy MALDI-TOF TOF
technique. The enzyme is a 1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate dehydrogenase.
Histograms of nanoparticles sizes were obtained. Size distribution
ranged from 40-160 nm, where 70% of nanoparticles have less than
100 nm in size. Spectroscopic analysis showed that the nanoparticles
are composed of elemental selenium. To analyse the effect of pH in
size and morphology of nanoparticles, the synthesis of them was
carried out at different pHs (4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0). For
thermostability studies samples were incubated at different
temperatures (60, 80 and 100 ºC) for 1 h and 3 h. The size of all
nanoparticles was less than 100 nm at pH 4.0; over 50% of
nanoparticles have less than 100 nm at pH 5.0; at pH 6.0 and 8.0 over
90% of nanoparticles have less than 100 nm in size. At neutral pH
(7.0) nanoparticles reach a size around 120 nm and only 20% of them
were less than 100 nm. When looking at temperature effect,
nanoparticles did not show a significant difference in size when they
were incubated between 0 and 3 h at 60 ºC. Meanwhile at 80 °C the
nanoparticles suspension lost its homogeneity. A change in size was
observed from 0 h of incubation at 80ºC, observing a size range
between 40-160 nm, with 20% of them over 100 nm. Meanwhile
after 3 h of incubation at size range changed to 60-180 nm with 50%
of them over 100 nm. At 100 °C the nanoparticles aggregate forming
nanorod structures. In conclusion, these results indicate that is
possible to modulate size and shape of biologically synthesized
nanoparticles by modulating pH and temperature.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a new packing strategy to
find a free resource for run-time mapping of application tasks to
NoC-based Heterogeneous MPSoC. The proposed strategy minimizes
the task mapping time in addition to placing the communicating tasks
close to each other. To evaluate our approach, a comparative study is
carried out for a platform containing single task supported PEs.
Experiments show that our strategy provides better results when
compared to latest dynamic mapping strategies reported in the
literature.
Abstract: Present study is aimed on the cutting process of circular
cross-section rods where the fracture is used to separate one rod
into two pieces. Incorporating the phenomenological ductile fracture
model into the explicit formulation of finite element method, the
process can be analyzed without the necessity of realizing too many
real experiments which could be expensive in case of repetitive
testing in different conditions. In the present paper, the steel AISI
1045 was examined and the tensile tests of smooth and notched
cylindrical bars were conducted together with biaxial testing of the
notched tube specimens to calibrate material constants of selected
phenomenological ductile fracture models. These were implemented
into the Abaqus/Explicit through user subroutine VUMAT and used
for cutting process simulation. As the calibration process is based
on variables which cannot be obtained directly from experiments,
numerical simulations of fracture tests are inevitable part of the
calibration. Finally, experiments regarding the cutting process were
carried out and predictive capability of selected fracture models is
discussed. Concluding remarks then make the summary of gained
experience both with the calibration and application of particular
ductile fracture criteria.
Abstract: The substantial similarity of fatigue mechanism in a
new test rig for rolling contact fatigue (RCF) has been investigated. A
new reduced-scale test rig is designed to perform controlled RCF
tests in wheel-rail materials. The fatigue mechanism of the rig is
evaluated in this study using a combined finite element-fatigue
prediction approach. The influences of loading conditions on fatigue
crack initiation have been studied. Furthermore, the effects of some
artificial defects (squat-shape) on fatigue lives are examined. To
simulate the vehicle-track interaction by means of the test rig, a threedimensional
finite element (FE) model is built up. The nonlinear
material behaviour of the rail steel is modelled in the contact
interface. The results of FE simulations are combined with the critical
plane concept to determine the material points with the greatest
possibility of fatigue failure. Based on the stress-strain responses, by
employing of previously postulated criteria for fatigue crack initiation
(plastic shakedown and ratchetting), fatigue life analysis is carried
out. The results are reported for various loading conditions and
different defect sizes. Afterward, the cyclic mechanism of the test rig
is evaluated from the operational viewpoint. The results of fatigue
life predictions are compared with the expected number of cycles of
the test rig by its cyclic nature. Finally, the estimative duration of the
experiments until fatigue crack initiation is roughly determined.
Abstract: This experimental study aims at studying the
conversion of macro-algae into bioethanol under several steps of
procedure: preparation, pre-treatment, fermentation, and distillation.
The main objective of this work was to investigate the role of buffer’s
type as a stabiliser of pH level and fermentation time on the yield of
ethanol. For this purpose, experiments were carried out on biomass
macro-algae to de-couple the pre-treatment and fermentation
processes from those associated with distillation process. β-
glucosidase was used as cellulose decomposer during hydrolysis step
and yeast was used during fermentation process. The species of
macro-algae utilised as energy feedstock was Ulva lactuca and it was
harvested from southern coast of Central of Java Island – Indonesia.
Experiments were conducted in a simple fermenter over a different
buffer: citrate buffer and acetic buffer, and over a range of
fermentation times between 5 to 20 days. The ethanol production was
found to be significantly affected by both variables. The optimum
time of fermentation was 10 days with citrate buffer; result in
0.88458% of ethanol, and the ethanol content after distillation
process was shown 0.985015%.
Abstract: Nonstandard tests are necessary for analyses and
verification of new developed structural and technological solutions
with application of composite materials. One of the most critical
primary structural parts of a typical aerospace structure is T-joint.
This structural element is loaded mainly in shear, bending, peel and
tension. The paper is focused on the shear loading simulations. The
aim of the work is to obtain a representative uniform distribution of
shear loads along T-joint during the mechanical testing. A new
design of T-joint test procedure, numerical simulation and
optimization of representative boundary conditions are presented.
The different conditions and inaccuracies both in simulations and
experiments are discussed. The influence of different parameters on
stress and strain distributions is demonstrated on T-joint made of
CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic). A special test rig designed by
VZLU (Aerospace Research and Test Establishment) for T-shear test
procedure is presented.
Abstract: This study was conducted to evaluate the manganese
removal from aqueous solution using Banana peels activated carbon
(BPAC). Batch experiments have been carried out to determine the
influence of parameters such as pH, biosorbent dose, initial metal ion
concentrations and contact times on the biosorption process. From
these investigations, a significant increase in percentage removal of
manganese 97.4% is observed at pH value 5.0, biosorbent dose 0.8 g,
initial concentration 20 ppm, temperature 25 ± 2°C, stirring rate 200
rpm and contact time 2h. The equilibrium concentration and the
adsorption capacity at equilibrium of the experimental results were
fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models; the Langmuir
isotherm was found to well represent the measured adsorption data
implying BPAC had heterogeneous surface. A raw groundwater
samples were collected from Baharmos groundwater treatment plant
network at Embaba and Manshiet Elkanater City/District-Giza,
Egypt, for treatment at the best conditions that reached at first phase
by BPAC. The treatment with BPAC could reduce iron and
manganese value of raw groundwater by 91.4% and 97.1%,
respectively and the effect of the treatment process on the
microbiological properties of groundwater sample showed decrease
of total bacterial count either at 22°C or at 37°C to 85.7% and 82.4%,
respectively. Also, BPAC was characterized using SEM and FTIR
spectroscopy.

Abstract: Mass flow measurement is the basis of most technoeconomic
formulations in the chemical industry. This calls for
reliable and accurate detection of mass flow. Flow measurement
laboratory experiments were conducted using various instruments.
These consisted of orifice plates, various sized rotameters, wet gas
meter and soap bubble meter. This work was aimed at evaluating
appropriate operating conditions and accuracy of the aforementioned
devices. The experimental data collected were compared to
theoretical predictions from Bernoulli’s equation and calibration
curves supplied by the instrument’s manufacturers. The results
obtained showed that rotameters were more reliable for measuring
high and low flow rates; while soap-bubble meters and wet-gas
meters were found to be suitable for measuring low flow rates. The
laboratory procedures and findings of the actual work can assist
engineering students and professionals in conducting their flow
measurement laboratory test work.
Abstract: Composite materials have important assets compared
to traditional materials. They bring many functional advantages:
lightness, mechanical resistance and chemical, etc. In the present
study we examine the effect of a circular central notch and a precrack
on the tensile fracture of two woven composite materials. The tensile
tests were applied to a standardized specimen, notched and a
precarcked (orientation of the crack 0°, 45° and 90°). These tensile
tests were elaborated according to an experimental planning design of
the type 23.31 requiring 24 experiments with three repetitions. By the
analysis of regression, we obtained a mathematical model describing
the maximum load according to the influential parameters (hole
diameter, precrack length, angle of a precrack orientation). The
specimens precracked at 90° have a better behavior than those having
a precrack at 45° and still better than those having of the precracks
oriented at 0°. In addition the maximum load is inversely
proportional to the notch size.
Abstract: The paper describes the experiments and the kinetic
parameters calculus of the gasoil hydrofining. They are presented
experimental results of gasoil hidrofining using Mo and promoted
with Ni on aluminum support catalyst. The authors have adapted a
kinetic model gasoil hydrofining. Using this proposed kinetic model
and the experimental data they have calculated the parameters of the
model. The numerical calculus is based on minimizing the difference
between the experimental sulf concentration and kinetic model
estimation.
Abstract: Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C) E-commerce has been
growing at a very high speed in recent years. Since identical or
nearly-same kinds of products compete one another by relying on
keyword search in C2C E-commerce, some sellers describe their
products with spam keywords that are popular but are not related to
their products. Though such products get more chances to be retrieved
and selected by consumers than those without spam keywords,
the spam keywords mislead the consumers and waste their time.
This problem has been reported in many commercial services like
ebay and taobao, but there have been little research to solve this
problem. As a solution to this problem, this paper proposes a method
to classify whether keywords of a product are spam or not. The
proposed method assumes that a keyword for a given product is
more reliable if the keyword is observed commonly in specifications
of products which are the same or the same kind as the given
product. This is because that a hierarchical category of a product
in general determined precisely by a seller of the product and so is
the specification of the product. Since higher layers of the hierarchical
category represent more general kinds of products, a reliable degree
is differently determined according to the layers. Hence, reliable
degrees from different layers of a hierarchical category become
features for keywords and they are used together with features only
from specifications for classification of the keywords. Support Vector
Machines are adopted as a basic classifier using the features, since
it is powerful, and widely used in many classification tasks. In
the experiments, the proposed method is evaluated with a golden
standard dataset from Yi-han-wang, a Chinese C2C E-commerce,
and is compared with a baseline method that does not consider
the hierarchical category. The experimental results show that the
proposed method outperforms the baseline in F1-measure, which
proves that spam keywords are effectively identified by a hierarchical
category in C2C E-commerce.
Abstract: Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs)
possess immunomodulatory properties. The effect of MSCs on the
crucial cellular immunity compartment – T-cells is of a special
interest. It is known that MSC tissue niche and expected milieu of
their interaction with T- cells are characterized by low oxygen
concentration, whereas the in vitro experiments usually are carried
out at a much higher ambient oxygen (20%). We firstly evaluated
immunomodulatory effects of MSCs on T-cells at tissue-related
oxygen (5%) after interaction implied cell-to-cell contacts and
paracrine factors only. It turned out that MSCs under reduced oxygen
can effectively suppress the activation and proliferation of PHAstimulated
T-cells and can provoke decrease in the production of
proinflammatory and increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines. In
hypoxia some effects were amplified (inhibition of proliferation, antiinflammatory
cytokine profile shift). This impact was more evident
after direct cell-to-cell interaction; lack of intercellular contacts could
revoke the potentiating effect of hypoxia.
Abstract: The emergence of the Semantic Web technology
increases day by day due to the rapid growth of multiple web pages.
Many standard formats are available to store the semantic web data.
The most popular format is the Resource Description Framework
(RDF). Querying large RDF graphs becomes a tedious procedure
with a vast increase in the amount of data. The problem of query
optimization becomes an issue in querying large RDF graphs.
Choosing the best query plan reduces the amount of query execution
time. To address this problem, nature inspired algorithms can be used
as an alternative to the traditional query optimization techniques. In
this research, the optimal query plan is generated by the proposed
SAPSO algorithm which is a hybrid of Simulated Annealing (SA)
and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms. The proposed
SAPSO algorithm has the ability to find the local optimistic result
and it avoids the problem of local minimum. Experiments were
performed on different datasets by changing the number of predicates
and the amount of data. The proposed algorithm gives improved
results compared to existing algorithms in terms of query execution
time.
Abstract: ‘Steganalysis’ is one of the challenging and attractive interests for the researchers with the development of information hiding techniques. It is the procedure to detect the hidden information from the stego created by known steganographic algorithm. In this paper, a novel feature based image steganalysis technique is proposed. Various statistical moments have been used along with some similarity metric. The proposed steganalysis technique has been designed based on transformation in four wavelet domains, which include Haar, Daubechies, Symlets and Biorthogonal. Each domain is being subjected to various classifiers, namely K-nearest-neighbor, K* Classifier, Locally weighted learning, Naive Bayes classifier, Neural networks, Decision trees and Support vector machines. The experiments are performed on a large set of pictures which are available freely in image database. The system also predicts the different message length definitions.
Abstract: In the present study, presence of endosulfan, imidacloprid, carbendazim, in the soil /vegetables/cereals and water samples was observed in agriculture fields of Uttarakhand. In view of biodegradation of these pesticides, 9 bacterial isolates were recovered from the soil samples of the fields which tolerated endosulfan, imidacloprid, carbendazim from 100 to 200 µg/ml. Three bacterial consortia used for in vitro bioremediation experiments were consisted of 3 bacterial isolates for carbendazim, imidacloprid and endosulfan, respectively. Maximum degradation (87 and 83%) of α and β endosulfan respectively was observed in soil slurry by consortium. Degradation of Imidacloprid and carbendazim under similar conditions was 88.4 and 77.5% respectively. FT-IR analysis of biodegraded samples of pesticides in liquid media showed stretching of various bonds. GC-MS of biodegraded endosulfan sample in soil slurry showed the presence of nontoxic intermediates. A pot trial with Bacterial treatments lowered down the uptake of pesticides in onion plants.
Abstract: In the past, the most comprehensively adopted light
source was incandescent light bulbs, but with the appearance of LED
light sources, traditional light sources have been gradually replaced by
LEDs because of its numerous superior characteristics. However,
many of the standards do not apply to LEDs as the two light sources
are characterized differently. This also intensifies the significance of
studies on LEDs. As a Kansei design study investigating the visual
glare produced by traffic arrows implemented with LEDs, this study
conducted a semantic analysis on the styles of traffic arrows used in
domestic and international occasions. The results will be able to
reduce drivers’ misrecognition that results in the unsuccessful arrival
at the destination, or in traffic accidents. This study started with a
literature review and surveyed the status quo before conducting
experiments that were divided in two parts. The first part involved a
screening experiment of arrow samples, where cluster analysis was
conducted to choose five representative samples of LED displays. The
second part was a semantic experiment on the display of arrows using
LEDs, where the five representative samples and the selected ten
adjectives were incorporated. Analyzing the results with
Quantification Theory Type I, it was found that among the
composition of arrows, fletching was the most significant factor that
influenced the adjectives. In contrast, a “no fletching” design was
more abstract and vague. It lacked the ability to convey the intended
message and might bear psychological negative connotation including
“dangerous,” “forbidden,” and “unreliable.” The arrow design
consisting of “> shaped fletching” was found to be more concrete and
definite, showing positive connotation including “safe,” “cautious,”
and “reliable.” When a stimulus was placed at a farther distance, the
glare could be significantly reduced; moreover, the visual evaluation
scores would be higher. On the contrary, if the fletching and the shaft
had a similar proportion, looking at the stimuli caused higher
evaluation at a closer distance. The above results will be able to be
applied to the design of traffic arrows by conveying information
definitely and rapidly. In addition, drivers’ safety could be enhanced
by understanding the cause of glare and improving visual
recognizability.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a smart music player that combines the musical genre classification and the spatial audio processing. The musical genre is classified based on content analysis of the musical segment detected from the audio stream. In parallel with the classification, the spatial audio quality is achieved by adding an artificial reverberation in a virtual acoustic space to the input mono sound. Thereafter, the spatial sound is boosted with the given frequency gains based on the musical genre when played back. Experiments measured the accuracy of detecting the musical segment from the audio stream and its musical genre classification. A listening test was performed based on the virtual acoustic space based spatial audio processing.
