Abstract: A total of twenty tensile biopsies were collected from
children undergoing tonsillectomy from teaching hospital ENT
department and Kurdistan private hospital in sulaimani city. All
biopsies were homogenized and cultured; the obtained bacterial
isolates were purified and identified by biochemical tests and VITEK
2 compact system. Among the twenty studied samples, only one
Pseudomonas putida with probability of 99% was isolated.
Antimicrobial susceptibility was carried out by disk diffusion
method, Pseudomonas putida showed resistance to all antibiotics
used except vancomycin. The isolate further subjected to PCR and
DNA sequence analysis of blaVIM gene using different set of primers
for different regions of VIM gene. The results were found to be PCR
positive for the blaVIM gene. To determine the sequence of blaVIM
gene, DNA sequencing performed. Sequence alignment of blaVIM
gene with previously recorded blaVIM gene in NCBI- database showed
that P. putida isolate have different blaVIM gene.
Abstract: This paper describes the application of a model
predictive controller to the problem of batch reactor temperature
control. Although a great deal of work has been done to improve
reactor throughput using batch sequence control, the control of the
actual reactor temperature remains a difficult problem for many
operators of these processes. Temperature control is important as
many chemical reactions are sensitive to temperature for formation of
desired products. This controller consist of two part (1) a nonlinear
control method GLC (Global Linearizing Control) to create a linear
model of system and (2) a Model predictive controller used to obtain
optimal input control sequence. The temperature of reactor is tuned
to track a predetermined temperature trajectory that applied to the
batch reactor. To do so two input signals, electrical powers and the
flow of coolant in the coil are used. Simulation results show that the
proposed controller has a remarkable performance for tracking
reference trajectory while at the same time it is robust against noise
imposed to system output.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence
of reaction temperature and wheat straw moisture content on the
pyrolysis product yields, in the temperature range of 475-575 °C.
Samples of straw with moisture contents from 1.5 wt % to 15.0 wt %
were fed to a bench scale Pyrolysis Centrifuge Reactor (PCR). The
experimental results show that the changes in straw moisture content
have no significant effect on the distribution of pyrolysis product
yields. The maximum bio-oil yields approximately 60 (wt %, on dry
ash free feedstock basis) was observed around 525 °C - 550 °C for all
straw moisture levels. The water content in the wet straw bio-oil was
the highest. The heating value of bio-oil and solid char were
measured and the percentages of its energy distribution were
calculated. The energy distributions of bio-oil, char and gas were 56-
69 % 24-33 %, and 2-19 %, respectively.
Abstract: The paper evaluates several hundred one-day-ahead
VaR forecasting models in the time period between the years 2004
and 2009 on data from six world stock indices - DJI, GSPC, IXIC,
FTSE, GDAXI and N225. The models model mean using the ARMA
processes with up to two lags and variance with one of GARCH,
EGARCH or TARCH processes with up to two lags. The models are
estimated on the data from the in-sample period and their forecasting
accuracy is evaluated on the out-of-sample data, which are more
volatile. The main aim of the paper is to test whether a model
estimated on data with lower volatility can be used in periods with
higher volatility. The evaluation is based on the conditional coverage
test and is performed on each stock index separately. The primary
result of the paper is that the volatility is best modelled using a
GARCH process and that an ARMA process pattern cannot be found
in analyzed time series.
Abstract: Thermally insulating ceramic coatings also known as
thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have been essential technologies to
improve the performance and efficiency of advanced gas turbines in
service at extremely high temperatures. The damage mechanisms of
air-plasma sprayed YSZ thermal barrier coatings (TBC) with various
microstructures were studied by microscopic techniques after thermal
cycling. The typical degradation of plasma TBCs that occurs during
cyclic furnace testing of an YSZ and alumina coating on a Titanium
alloy are analyzed. During the present investigation the effects of
topcoat thickness, bond coat oxidation, thermal cycle lengths and test
temperature are investigated using thermal cycling. These results
were correlated with stresses measured by a spectroscopic technique
in order to understand specific damage mechanism. The failure
mechanism of former bond coats was found to involve fracture
initiation at the thermally grown oxide (TGO) interface and at the
TGO bond coat interface. The failure mechanism of the YZ was
found to involve combination of fracture along the interface between
TGO and bond coat.
Abstract: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and
conventional microbiological methods were used to detect bacterial
contamination of egg shells and egg content in different commercial
housing systems, open house system and evaporative cooling system.
A PCR assay was developed for direct detection using a set of
primers specific for the invasion by A gene (invA) of Salmonella spp.
PCR detected the presence of Salmonella in 2 samples of shell egg
from the evaporative cooling system, while conventional cultural
methods detected no Salmonella from the same samples.
Abstract: EPC Class-1 Generation-2 UHF tags, one of Radio
frequency identification or RFID tag types, is expected that most
companies are planning to use it in the supply chain in the short term
and in consumer packaging in the long term due to its inexpensive
cost. Because of the very cost, however, its resources are extremely
scarce and it is hard to have any valuable security algorithms in it. It
causes security vulnerabilities, in particular cloning the tags for
counterfeits. In this paper, we propose a product authentication
solution for anti-counterfeiting at application level in the supply chain
and mobile RFID environment. It aims to become aware of
distribution of spurious products with fake RFID tags and to provide a
product authentication service to general consumers with mobile
RFID devices like mobile phone or PDA which has a mobile RFID
reader. We will discuss anti-counterfeiting mechanisms which are
required to our proposed solution and address requirements that the
mechanisms should have.
Abstract: AAM (active appearance model) has been successfully
applied to face and facial feature localization. However, its performance is sensitive to initial parameter values. In this paper, we propose a two-stage AAM for robust face alignment, which first fits an
inner face-AAM model to the inner facial feature points of the face and then localizes the whole face and facial features by optimizing the
whole face-AAM model parameters. Experiments show that the proposed face alignment method using two-stage AAM is more reliable to the background and the head pose than the standard
AAM-based face alignment method.
Abstract: In general dynamic analyses, lower mode response is
of interest, however the higher modes of spatially discretized
equations generally do not represent the real behavior and not affects
to global response much. Some implicit algorithms, therefore, are
introduced to filter out the high-frequency modes using intended
numerical error. The objective of this study is to introduce the
P-method and PC α-method to compare that with dissipation method
and Newmark method through the stability analysis and numerical
example. PC α-method gives more accuracy than other methods
because it based on the α-method inherits the superior properties of the
implicit α-method. In finite element analysis, the PC α-method is more
useful than other methods because it is the explicit scheme and it
achieves the second order accuracy and numerical damping
simultaneously.
Abstract: Pulse code modulation is a widespread technique
in digital communication with significant impact on existing
modern and proposed future communication technologies. Its
widespread utilization is due to its simplicity and attractive
spectral characteristics. In this paper, we present a new
approach to the spectral analysis of PCM signals using
Riemann-Stieltjes integrals, which is very accurate for high bit
rates. This approach can serve as a model for similar spectral
analysis of other competing modulation schemes.
Abstract: Chloride induced corrosion of steel reinforcement is
the main cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete marine
structures. This paper investigates the relative performance of
alternative repair options with respect to the deterioration of
reinforced concrete bridge elements in marine environments. Focus is
placed on the initiation phase of reinforcement corrosion. A
laboratory study is described which involved exposing concrete
samples to accelerated chloride-ion ingress. The study examined the
relative efficiencies of two repair methods, namely Ordinary Portland
Cement (OPC) concrete and a concrete which utilised Ground
Granulated Blastfurnace Cement (GGBS) as a partial cement
replacement. The mix designs and materials utilised were identical to
those implemented in the repair of a marine bridge on the South East
coast of Ireland in 2007. The results of this testing regime serve to
inform input variables employed in probabilistic modelling of
deterioration for subsequent reliability based analysis to compare the
relative performance of the studied repair options.
Abstract: Applying a rigorous process to optimize the elements
of a supply-chain network resulted in reduction of the waiting time
for a service provider and customer. Different sources of downtime
of hydraulic pressure controller/calibrator (HPC) were causing
interruptions in the operations. The process examined all the issues to
drive greater efficiencies. The issues included inherent design issues
with HPC pump, contamination of the HPC with impurities, and the
lead time required for annual calibration in the USA.
HPC is used for mandatory testing/verification of formation
tester/pressure measurement/logging-while drilling tools by oilfield
service providers, including Halliburton.
After market study andanalysis, it was concluded that the current
HPC model is best suited in the oilfield industry. To use theexisting
HPC model effectively, design andcontamination issues were
addressed through design and process improvements. An optimum
network is proposed after comparing different supply-chain models
for calibration lead-time reduction.
Abstract: Principle component analysis is often combined with
the state-of-art classification algorithms to recognize human faces.
However, principle component analysis can only capture these
features contributing to the global characteristics of data because it is a
global feature selection algorithm. It misses those features
contributing to the local characteristics of data because each principal
component only contains some levels of global characteristics of data.
In this study, we present a novel face recognition approach using
non-negative principal component analysis which is added with the
constraint of non-negative to improve data locality and contribute to
elucidating latent data structures. Experiments are performed on the
Cambridge ORL face database. We demonstrate the strong
performances of the algorithm in recognizing human faces in
comparison with PCA and NREMF approaches.
Abstract: Rotation or tilt present in an image capture by digital
means can be detected and corrected using Artificial Neural Network
(ANN) for application with a Face Recognition System (FRS). Principal
Component Analysis (PCA) features of faces at different angles
are used to train an ANN which detects the rotation for an input image
and corrected using a set of operations implemented using another
system based on ANN. The work also deals with the recognition
of human faces with features from the foreheads, eyes, nose and
mouths as decision support entities of the system configured using
a Generalized Feed Forward Artificial Neural Network (GFFANN).
These features are combined to provide a reinforced decision for
verification of a person-s identity despite illumination variations. The
complete system performing facial image rotation detection, correction
and recognition using re-enforced decision support provides a
success rate in the higher 90s.
Abstract: Physiological activity of the pineal gland with specific
responses in the reproductive territory may be interpreted by
monitoring the process parameters used in poultry practice in
different age batches of laying hens. As biological material were
used 105 laying hens, clinically healthy, belonging to ALBO SL-
2000 hybrid, raised on ground, from which blood samples were taken
at the age of 12 and 28 weeks. The haematological examinations
were concerned to obtain the total number of erythrocytes and
leukocytes and the main erythrocyte constant (RBC, PCV, MCV,
MCH, MCHC and WBC). The results allow the interpretation of the
reproductive status through the dynamics of the presented values.
Abstract: This paper presents a comparative analysis of a new
unsupervised PCA-based technique for steel plates texture segmentation
towards defect detection. The proposed scheme called Variance
Based Component Analysis or VBCA employs PCA for feature
extraction, applies a feature reduction algorithm based on variance of
eigenpictures and classifies the pixels as defective and normal. While
the classic PCA uses a clusterer like Kmeans for pixel clustering,
VBCA employs thresholding and some post processing operations to
label pixels as defective and normal. The experimental results show
that proposed algorithm called VBCA is 12.46% more accurate and
78.85% faster than the classic PCA.
Abstract: Mechanical and water transport properties of high
performance concrete (HPC) containing natural zeolite as partial
replacement of Portland cement are studied. Experimental results
show that in the investigated mixes the use of natural zeolite leads to
an increase of porosity, decrease of compressive strength and
increase of moisture diffusivity and water vapor diffusion coefficient,
as compared with the reference HPC. However, for the replacement
level up to 20% of the mass of Portland cement the concretes still
maintain their high performance character and exhibit acceptable
water transport properties. Therefore, natural zeolite can be
considered an environmental friendly binder with a potential to
replace a part of Portland cement in concrete in building industry.
Abstract: A clustering is process to identify a homogeneous
groups of object called as cluster. Clustering is one interesting topic
on data mining. A group or class behaves similarly characteristics.
This paper discusses a robust clustering process for data images with
two reduction dimension approaches; i.e. the two dimensional
principal component analysis (2DPCA) and principal component
analysis (PCA). A standard approach to overcome this problem is
dimension reduction, which transforms a high-dimensional data into
a lower-dimensional space with limited loss of information. One of
the most common forms of dimensionality reduction is the principal
components analysis (PCA). The 2DPCA is often called a variant of
principal component (PCA), the image matrices were directly treated
as 2D matrices; they do not need to be transformed into a vector so
that the covariance matrix of image can be constructed directly using
the original image matrices. The decomposed classical covariance
matrix is very sensitive to outlying observations. The objective of
paper is to compare the performance of robust minimizing vector
variance (MVV) in the two dimensional projection PCA (2DPCA)
and the PCA for clustering on an arbitrary data image when outliers
are hiden in the data set. The simulation aspects of robustness and
the illustration of clustering images are discussed in the end of
paper
Abstract: A numerical investigation has carried out to understand the melting characteristics of phase change material (PCM) in a fin type latent heat storage with the addition of embedded aluminum spiral fillers. It is known that melting performance of PCM can be significantly improved by increasing the number of embedded metallic fins in the latent heat storage system but to certain values where only lead to small improvement in heat transfer rate. Hence, adding aluminum spiral fillers within the fin gap can be an option to improve heat transfer internally. This paper presents extensive computational visualizations on the PCM melting patterns of the proposed fin-spiral fillers configuration. The aim of this investigation is to understand the PCM-s melting behaviors by observing the natural convection currents movement and melting fronts formation. Fluent 6.3 simulation software was utilized in producing twodimensional visualizations of melting fractions, temperature distributions and flow fields to illustrate the melting process internally. The results show that adding aluminum spiral fillers in Fin type latent heat storage can promoted small but more active natural convection currents and improve melting of PCM.
Abstract: With the aim of improving nutritional profile and antioxidant capacity of gluten-free cookies, blueberry pomace, by-product of juice production, was processed into a new food ingredient by drying and grinding and used for a gluten-free cookie formulation. Since the quality of a baked product is highly influenced by the baking conditions, the objective of this work was to optimize the baking time and thickness of dough pieces, by applying Response Surface Methodology (RSM) in order to obtain the best technological quality of the cookies. The experiments were carried out according to a Central Composite Design (CCD) by selecting the dough thickness and baking time as independent variables, while hardness, color parameters (L*, a* and b* values), water activity, diameter and short/long ratio were response variables. According to the results of RSM analysis, the baking time of 13.74min and dough thickness of 4.08mm was found to be the optimal for the baking temperature of 170°C. As similar optimal parameters were obtained by previously conducted experiment based on sensory analysis, response surface methodology (RSM) can be considered as a suitable approach to optimize the baking process.
