Abstract: Knowledge management is considered as an important
factor in improving health care services. KM facilitates the transfer of
existing knowledge and the development of new knowledge in
hospitals. This paper reviews practices adopted by doctors in Kuwait
for capturing, sharing, and generating knowledge. It also discusses
the perceived impact of KM practices on performance of hospitals.
Based on a survey of 277 doctors, the study found that KM practices
among doctors in the sampled hospitals were not very effective. Little
attention was paid to the main activities that support the transfer of
expertise among doctors in hospitals. However, as predicted by
previous studies, good km practices were perceived by doctors to
have a positive impact on performance of hospitals. It was concluded
that through effective KM practices hospitals could improve the
services they provide. Documentation of best practices and capturing
of lessons learnt for re-use of knowledge could help transform the
hospitals into learning organizations.
Abstract: The paper involves a chain of activities from
synthesis, establishment of the methodology for characterization and
testing of novel protective materials through the pilot production and
application on model supports.
It summarizes the results regarding the development of the pilot
production protocol for newly developed self-cleaning materials. The
optimization of the production parameters was completed in order to
improve the most important functional properties (mineralogy
characteristics, particle size, self-cleaning properties and
photocatalytic activity) of the newly designed nanocomposite
material.
Abstract: This paper designs the four-phase Boost Converter
which overcomes the problem of high input ripple current and output
ripple voltage. Digital control is more convenient for such a topology
on basis of synchronization, phase shift operation, etc. Simulation
results are presented for open-loop and closed-loop for four phase
boost converter. This control scheme is applicable for PFC rectifiers
as well. Thus a comparative analysis based on the obtained results is
performed.
Abstract: Supply chain (SC) is an operational research (OR)
approach and technique which acts as catalyst within central nervous
system of business today. Without SC, any type of business is at
doldrums, hence entropy. SC is the lifeblood of business today
because it is the pivotal hub which provides imperative competitive
advantage. The paper present a conceptual framework dubbed as
Homomorphic Conceptual Framework for Effective Supply Chain
Strategy (HCEFSC).The term Homomorphic is derived from abstract
algebraic mathematical term homomorphism (same shape) which
also embeds the following mathematical application sets:
monomorphisms, isomorphism, automorphisms, and endomorphism.
The HCFESC is intertwined and integrated with wide and broad sets
of elements.
Abstract: Axial flow fans, while incapable of developing high
pressures, they are well suitable for handling large volumes of air at
relatively low pressures. In general, they are low in cost and possess
good efficiency, and can have blades of airfoil shape. Axial flow fans
show good efficiencies, and can operate at high static pressures if
such operation is necessary. Our objective is to model and analyze
the flow through AXIAL FANS using CFD Software and draw
inference from the obtained results, so as to get maximum efficiency.
The performance of an axial fan was simulated using CFD and the
effect of variation of different parameters such as the blade number,
noise level, velocity, temperature and pressure distribution on the
blade surface was studied. This paper aims to present a final 3D CAD
model of axial flow fan. Adapting this model to the available
components in the market, the first optimization was done. After this
step, CFX flow solver is used to do the necessary numerical analyses
on the aerodynamic performance of this model. This analysis results
in a final optimization of the proposed 3D model which is presented
in this article.
Abstract: The final step to complete the “Analytical Systems
Engineering Process” is the “Allocated Architecture” in which all
Functional Requirements (FRs) of an engineering system must be
allocated into their corresponding Physical Components (PCs). At
this step, any design for developing the system’s allocated
architecture in which no clear pattern of assigning the exclusive
“responsibility” of each PC for fulfilling the allocated FR(s) can be
found is considered a poor design that may cause difficulties in
determining the specific PC(s) which has (have) failed to satisfy a
given FR successfully. The present study utilizes the Axiomatic
Design method principles to mathematically address this problem and
establishes an “Axiomatic Model” as a solution for reaching good
alternatives for developing the allocated architecture. This study
proposes a “loss Function”, as a quantitative criterion to monetarily
compare non-ideal designs for developing the allocated architecture
and choose the one which imposes relatively lower cost to the
system’s stakeholders. For the case-study, we use the existing design
of U. S. electricity marketing subsystem, based on data provided by
the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The result for
2012 shows the symptoms of a poor design and ineffectiveness due to
coupling among the FRs of this subsystem.
Abstract: Safety is one of the most important considerations
when buying a new car. While active safety aims at avoiding
accidents, passive safety systems such as airbags and seat belts
protect the occupant in case of an accident. In addition to legal
regulations, organizations like Euro NCAP provide consumers with
an independent assessment of the safety performance of cars and
drive the development of safety systems in automobile industry.
Those ratings are mainly based on injury assessment reference values
derived from physical parameters measured in dummies during a car
crash test.
The components and sub-systems of a safety system are designed
to achieve the required restraint performance. Sled tests and other
types of tests are then carried out by car makers and their suppliers
to confirm the protection level of the safety system. A Knowledge
Discovery in Databases (KDD) process is proposed in order to
minimize the number of tests. The KDD process is based on the
data emerging from sled tests according to Euro NCAP specifications.
About 30 parameters of the passive safety systems from different data
sources (crash data, dummy protocol) are first analysed together with
experts opinions. A procedure is proposed to manage missing data
and validated on real data sets. Finally, a procedure is developed to
estimate a set of rough initial parameters of the passive system before
testing aiming at reducing the number of tests.
Abstract: Red blood cells (RBC) are the most common types of
blood cells and are the most intensively studied in cell biology. The
lack of RBCs is a condition in which the amount of hemoglobin level
is lower than normal and is referred to as “anemia”. Abnormalities in
RBCs will affect the exchange of oxygen. This paper presents a
comparative study for various techniques for classifying the RBCs as
normal or abnormal (anemic) using WEKA. WEKA is an open
source consists of different machine learning algorithms for data
mining applications. The algorithms tested are Radial Basis Function
neural network, Support vector machine, and K-Nearest Neighbors
algorithm. Two sets of combined features were utilized for
classification of blood cells images. The first set, exclusively consist
of geometrical features, was used to identify whether the tested blood
cell has a spherical shape or non-spherical cells. While the second
set, consist mainly of textural features was used to recognize the
types of the spherical cells. We have provided an evaluation based on
applying these classification methods to our RBCs image dataset
which were obtained from Serdang Hospital - Malaysia, and
measuring the accuracy of test results. The best achieved
classification rates are 97%, 98%, and 79% for Support vector
machines, Radial Basis Function neural network, and K-Nearest
Neighbors algorithm respectively.
Abstract: The classroom of the 21st century is an ever changing
forum for new and innovative thoughts and ideas. With increasing
technology and opportunity, students have rapid access to
information that only decades ago would have taken weeks to obtain.
Unfortunately, new techniques and technology are not the cure for
the fundamental problems that have plagued the classroom ever since
education was established. Class size has been an issue long debated
in academia. While it is difficult to pin point an exact number, it is
clear that in this case more does not mean better. By looking into the
success and pitfalls of classroom size the true advantages of smaller
classes will become clear. Previously, one class was comprised of 50
students. Being seventeen and eighteen- year- old students,
sometimes it was quite difficult for them to stay focused. To help
them understand and gain much knowledge, a researcher introduced
“The Theory of Multiple Intelligence” and this, in fact, enabled
students to learn according to their own learning preferences no
matter how they were being taught. In this lesson, the researcher
designed a cycle of learning activities involving all intelligences so
that everyone had equal opportunities to learn.
Abstract: We present an analytical model for the calculation of
the sensitivity, the spectral current noise and the detective parameter
for an optically illuminated In0.53Ga0.47As n+nn+ diode. The
photocurrent due to the excess carrier is obtained by solving the
continuity equation. Moreover, the current noise level is evaluated at
room temperature and under a constant voltage applied between the
diode terminals. The analytical calculation of the current noise in the
n+nn+ structure is developed by considering the free carries
fluctuations. The responsivity and the detection parameter are
discussed as functions of the doping concentrations and the emitter
layer thickness in one-dimensional homogeneous n+nn+ structure.
Abstract: Lead being a toxic heavy metal that mankind is
exposed to the highest levels of this metal from environmental
pollutants. A total of 180 Male scalp hair samples were collected
from different environments in Greater Cairo (GC), i.e. industrial,
heavy traffic and rural areas (60 samples from each) having different
activities during the period of, 1/5/2010 to 1/11/2012. Hair samples
were collected during five stages. Data proved that the concentration
of lead in male industrial areas of Cairo ranged between 6.2847 to
19.0432 μg/g, with mean value of 12.3288 μg/g. On the other hand,
lead content of hair samples of residential-traffic areas ranged
between 2.8634 to 16.3311 μg/g with mean value of 9.7552 μg/g.
While lead concentration on the hair of the male residents living in
rural area ranged between 1.0499-9.0402μg/g with mean value of
4.7327 μg/g. The Pb concentration in scalp hair of Cairo residents of
residential-traffic and rural traffic areas was observed to follow the
same pattern. The pattern was that of decrease concentration of
summer and its increase in winter. Then, there was a marked increase
in Pb concentration of summer 2012, and this increase was
significant. These were obviously seen for the residential-traffic and
rural areas residents. Pb pollution in residents of industrial areas
showed the same seasonal pattern, but there was marked to decrease
in Pb concentration of summer 2012, and this decrease was
significant. Lead pollution in residents of GC was serious. It is worth
noting that the atmosphere is still contaminated by lead despite a
decade of using unleaded gasoline. Strong seasonal variation in
higher Pb concentration on winter than in summer was found. Major
contributions to the pollution with Pb could include industry
emissions, motor vehicle emissions and long transported dust from
outside Cairo. More attention should be paid to the reduction of Pb
content of the urban aerosol and to the Pb pollution health.
Abstract: Several of the practical industrial control processes are
multivariable processes. Due to the relation amid the variables
(interaction), delay in the loops, it is very intricate to design a
controller directly for these processes. So first, the interaction of the
variables is analyzed using Relative Normalized Gain Array
(RNGA), which considers the time constant, static gain and delay
time of the processes. Based on the effect of RNGA, relative gain
array (RGA) and NI, the pair (control configuration) of variables to
be controlled by decentralized control is selected. The equivalent
transfer function (ETF) of the process model is estimated as first
order process with delay using the corresponding elements in the
Relative gain array and Relative average residence time array
(RARTA) of the processes. Secondly, a decentralized Proportional-
Integral (PI) controller is designed for each ETF simply using
frequency response specifications. Finally, the performance and
robustness of the algorithm is comparing with existing related
approaches to validate the effectiveness of the projected algorithm.
Abstract: Steganography is the art and science that hides the information in an appropriate cover carrier like image, text, audio and video media. In this work the authors propose a new image based steganographic method for hiding information within the complex bit planes of the image. After slicing into bit planes the cover image is analyzed to extract the most complex planes in decreasing order based on their bit plane complexity. The complexity function next determines the complex noisy blocks of the chosen bit plane and finally pixel mapping method (PMM) has been used to embed secret bits into those regions of the bit plane. The novel approach of using pixel mapping method (PMM) in bit plane domain adaptively embeds data on most complex regions of image, provides high embedding capacity, better imperceptibility and resistance to steganalysis attack.
Abstract: This study presents an attempt to evaluate the
antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity of methanolic extract,
and essential oils prepared from the leaves of sage (Salvia officinalis
L.). The content of polyphenol in the methanolic extracts from the
leaves of Salvia officinalis was determined spectrophotometrically,
calculated as gallic acid and catechin equivalent. The essential oils
and methanol extract were also subjected to screenings for the
evaluation of their antioxidant activities using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-
picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test. While the plant essential oils showed
only weak antioxidant activities, its methanol extract was
considerably active in DPPH (IC50 = 37.29 μg/ml) test. Appreciable
total polyphenol content (31.25 mg/g) was also detected for the plant
methanol extract as gallic acid equivalent in the Folin–Ciocalteu test.
The plant was also screened for its antimicrobial activity and good to
moderate inhibitions were recorded for its essential oils, and
methanol extracts against most of the tested microorganisms.
The present investigation revealed that this plant had rich source
of antioxidant properties. It is for this reason that sage has found
increasing application in food formulations.
Abstract: Heavy rare earth (HRE) oxalate concentrates were
prepared from the Egyptian crude monazite sand (graded about 47%).
The concentrates were specified quantitatively for their constituents
of individual rare earth elements using ion chromatograph (IC) and
qualitatively by scanning electron microscope (SEM) for the other
major constituents. The 1st concentrate was composed of 10.5%
HREE where 7.25% of them represented yttrium. The 2nd concentrate
contained about 41.7% LREE, 17.5% HREE and 13.6% Th. The
LREE involved 18.3% Ce, 10.5% La and 8% Nd while the HREE
were 8.7% Y, 3.5% Gd and 2.9% Dy. The 3rd concentrate was
containing about 8.0% LREE (3.7% Ce, 2.0% La and 1.5% Nd),
10.2% HREE (6.4% yttrium and 2.0% Dy) and 2.1% uranium. The
final concentrate comprised 0.84% uranium beside iron, chromium
and traces of REE.
Abstract: In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of a threelobe
journal bearing lubricated with micropolar fluids are determined
by the linear stability theory. Lubricating oil containing additives and
contaminants is modelled as micropolar fluid. The modified
Reynolds equation is obtained using the micropolar lubrication theory
.The finite difference technique has been used to determine the
solution of the modified Reynolds equation. The dynamic
characteristics in terms of stiffness, damping coefficients, the critical
mass and whirl ratio are determined for various values of size of
material characteristic length and the coupling number. The
computed results show that the three-lobe bearing lubricated with
micropolar fluid exhibits better stability compared with that
lubricated with Newtonian fluid. According to the results obtained,
the effect of the parameter micropolar fluid is remarkable on the
dynamic characteristics and stability of the three-lobe bearing.
Abstract: The paper presents a plastic analysis procedure based
on the energy balance concept for performance based seismic retrofit
of multi-story multi-bay masonry infilled reinforced concrete (R/C)
frames with a ‘soft’ ground story using passive energy dissipation
(PED) devices with the objective of achieving a target performance
level of the retrofitted R/C frame for a given seismic hazard level at
the building site. The proposed energy based plastic analysis
procedure was employed for developing performance based design
(PBD) formulations for PED devices for a simulated application in
seismic retrofit of existing frame structures designed in compliance
with the prevalent standard codes of practice. The PBD formulations
developed for PED devices were implemented for simulated seismic
retrofit of a representative code-compliant masonry infilled R/C
frame with a ‘soft’ ground story using friction dampers as the PED
device. Non-linear dynamic analyses of the retrofitted masonry
infilled R/C frames is performed to investigate the efficacy and
accuracy of the proposed energy based plastic analysis procedure in
achieving the target performance level under design level
earthquakes. Results of non-linear dynamic analyses demonstrate that
the maximum inter-story drifts in the masonry infilled R/C frames
with a ‘soft’ ground story that is retrofitted with the friction dampers
designed using the proposed PBD formulations are controlled within
the target drifts under near-field as well far-field earthquakes.
Abstract: This paper reports a structured literature review of the
application of Health Information Technology in developing
countries, defined as the World Bank categories Low-income
countries, Lower-middle-income, and Upper-middle-income
countries. The aim was to identify and classify the various
applications of health information technology to assess its current
state in developing countries and explore potential areas of research.
We offer specific analysis and application of HIT in Libya as one of
the developing countries. A structured literature review was
conducted using the following online databases: IEEE, Science
Direct, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Publication dates were set for
2000-2013. For the PubMed search, publications in English, French,
and Arabic were specified. Using a content analysis approach, 159
papers were analyzed and a total number of 26 factors were identified
that affect the adoption of health information technology. Of the 2681
retrieved articles, 159 met the inclusion criteria which were carefully
analyzed and classified. The implementation of health information
technology across developing countries is varied. Whilst it was
initially expected financial constraints would have severely limited
health information technology implementation, some developing
countries like India have nevertheless dominated the literature and
taken the lead in conducting scientific research. Comparing the
number of studies to the number of countries in each category, we
found that Low-income countries and Lower-middle-income had
more studies carried out than Upper-middle-income countries.
However, whilst IT has been used in various sectors of the economy,
the healthcare sector in developing countries is still failing to benefit
fully from the potential advantages that IT can offer.
Abstract: Ontologies offer a means for representing and sharing
information in many domains, particularly in complex domains. For
example, it can be used for representing and sharing information
of System Requirement Specification (SRS) of complex systems
like the SRS of ERTMS/ETCS written in natural language. Since
this system is a real-time and critical system, generic ontologies,
such as OWL and generic ERTMS ontologies provide minimal
support for modeling temporal information omnipresent in these SRS
documents. To support the modeling of temporal information, one
of the challenges is to enable representation of dynamic features
evolving in time within a generic ontology with a minimal redesign
of it. The separation of temporal information from other information
can help to predict system runtime operation and to properly design
and implement them. In addition, it is helpful to provide a reasoning
and querying techniques to reason and query temporal information
represented in the ontology in order to detect potential temporal
inconsistencies. To address this challenge, we propose a lightweight
3-layer temporal Quality of Service (QoS) ontology for representing,
reasoning and querying over temporal and non-temporal information
in a complex domain ontology. Representing QoS entities in separated
layers can clarify the distinction between the non QoS entities
and the QoS entities in an ontology. The upper generic layer of
the proposed ontology provides an intuitive knowledge of domain
components, specially ERTMS/ETCS components. The separation of
the intermediate QoS layer from the lower QoS layer allows us to
focus on specific QoS Characteristics, such as temporal or integrity
characteristics. In this paper, we focus on temporal information that
can be used to predict system runtime operation. To evaluate our
approach, an example of the proposed domain ontology for handover
operation, as well as a reasoning rule over temporal relations in this
domain-specific ontology, are presented.
