Abstract: Mobile ad hoc network is a collection of mobile
nodes communicating through wireless channels without any existing
network infrastructure or centralized administration. Because of the
limited transmission range of wireless network interfaces, multiple
"hops" may be needed to exchange data across the network. In order
to facilitate communication within the network, a routing protocol is
used to discover routes between nodes. The primary goal of such an
ad hoc network routing protocol is correct and efficient route
establishment between a pair of nodes so that messages may be
delivered in a timely manner. Route construction should be done
with a minimum of overhead and bandwidth consumption. This paper
examines two routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks– the
Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV), the table- driven
protocol and the Ad hoc On- Demand Distance Vector routing
(AODV), an On –Demand protocol and evaluates both protocols
based on packet delivery fraction, normalized routing load, average
delay and throughput while varying number of nodes, speed and
pause time.
Abstract: This paper deals with the design of a periodic output
feedback controller for a flexible beam structure modeled with
Timoshenko beam theory, Finite Element Method, State space
methods and embedded piezoelectrics concept. The first 3 modes are
considered in modeling the beam. The main objective of this work is
to control the vibrations of the beam when subjected to an external
force. Shear piezoelectric sensors and actuators are embedded into
the top and bottom layers of a flexible aluminum beam structure, thus
making it intelligent and self-adaptive. The composite beam is
divided into 5 finite elements and the control actuator is placed at
finite element position 1, whereas the sensor is varied from position 2
to 5, i.e., from the nearby fixed end to the free end. 4 state space
SISO models are thus developed. Periodic Output Feedback (POF)
Controllers are designed for the 4 SISO models of the same plant to
control the flexural vibrations. The effect of placing the sensor at
different locations on the beam is observed and the performance of
the controller is evaluated for vibration control. Conclusions are
finally drawn.
Abstract: This paper presents three-phase evolution search methodology to automatically design fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs) that can work in a wide range of operating conditions. These include varying load, parameter variations, and unknown external disturbances. The three-phase scheme consists of an exploration phase, an exploitation phase and a robustness phase. The first two phases search for FLC with high accuracy performances while the last phase aims at obtaining FLC providing the best compromise between the accuracy and robustness performances. Simulations were performed for direct-drive two-axis robot arm. The evolved FLC with the proposed design technique found to provide a very satisfactory performance under the wide range of operation conditions and to overcome problem associated with coupling and nonlinearities characteristics inherent to robot arms.
Abstract: Feature selection plays an important role in applications with high dimensional data. The assessment of the stability of feature selection/ranking algorithms becomes an important issue when the dataset is small and the aim is to gain insight into the underlying process by analyzing the most relevant features. In this work, we propose a graphical approach that enables to analyze the similarity between feature ranking techniques as well as their individual stability. Moreover, it works with whatever stability metric (Canberra distance, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, Kuncheva's stability index,...). We illustrate this visualization technique evaluating the stability of several feature selection techniques on a spectral binary dataset. Experimental results with a neural-based classifier show that stability and ranking quality may not be linked together and both issues have to be studied jointly in order to offer answers to the domain experts.
Abstract: The hybridisation of genetic algorithm with heuristics has been shown to be one of an effective way to improve its performance. In this work, genetic algorithm hybridised with four heuristics including a new heuristic called neighbourhood improvement were investigated through the classical travelling salesman problem. The experimental results showed that the proposed heuristic outperformed other heuristics both in terms of quality of the results obtained and the computational time.
Abstract: In this paper a simple terrain evaluation method for
hexapod robot is introduced. This method is based on feet coordinate
evaluation when all are on the ground. Depending on the feet
coordinate differences the local terrain evaluation is possible. Terrain
evaluation is necessary for right gait selection and/or body position
correction. For terrain roughness evaluation three planes are plotted:
two of them as definition points use opposite feet coordinates, third
coincides with the robot body plane. The leaning angle of body plane
is evaluated measuring gravity force using three-axis accelerometer.
Terrain roughness evaluation method is based on angle estimation
between normal vectors of these planes. Aim of this work is to
present a simple method for embedded robot controller, allowing to
find the best further movement settings.
Abstract: This research explores visitor-s expectations of service
quality in intelligent living space showroom – Living 3.0 in Taiwan.
Based on the five dimensions of PZB service quality, a specialist
questionnaire is utilized to establish a complete service quality
evaluation framework for Living 3.0. In this research, analysis
hierarchy process (AHP) is applied to find the relative weights among
the criteria. Finally, the service quality evaluation framework and
evaluation results can be used as a guide for Living 3.0 proprietors to
review, improve, and enhance service planning and service qualities in
the future.
Abstract: With increasing number of wireless devices like
laptops, Wi-Fi Web Cams, network extenders, etc., a new kind of
problems appeared, mostly related to poor Wi-Fi throughput or
communication problems. In this paper an investigation on wireless
networks and it-s saturation in Vilnius City and its surrounding is
presented, covering the main problems of wireless saturation and
network load during day. Also an investigation on wireless channel
selection and noise levels were made, showing the impact of
neighbor AP to signal and noise levels and how it changes during the
day.
Abstract: In this paper, the problem of stability criteria of neural networks (NNs) with two-additive time-varying delay compenents is investigated. The relationship between the time-varying delay and its lower and upper bounds is taken into account when estimating the upper bound of the derivative of Lyapunov functional. As a result, some improved delay stability criteria for NNs with two-additive time-varying delay components are proposed. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Abstract: In the course of the present work, plain (nonencapsulated)
and microencapsulated polyphenols were produced
using olive mill wastewater (OMW) as raw material, in order to be
used for enrichment of yogurt and dairy products. The OMW was
first clarified by using membrane technology and subsequently the
contained poly-phenols were isolated by adsorption-desorption
technique using selective macro-porous resins and finally recovered
in dry form after been processed by RO membrane technique
followed by freeze drying. Moreover, the polyphenols were
encapsulated in modified starch by freeze drying in order to mask the
color and bitterness effect and improve their functionality. The two
products were used successfully as additives in yogurt preparations
and the produced products were acceptable by the consumers and
presented with certain advantage to the plain yogurt. For the herein
proposed production scheme a patent application was already
submitted.
Abstract: In this paper a comprehensive model of a fossil fueled
power plant (FFPP) is developed in order to evaluate the
performance of a newly designed turbine follower controller.
Considering the drawbacks of previous works, an overall model is
developed to minimize the error between each subsystem model
output and the experimental data obtained at the actual power plant.
The developed model is organized in two main subsystems namely;
Boiler and Turbine. Considering each FFPP subsystem
characteristics, different modeling approaches are developed. For
economizer, evaporator, superheater and reheater, first order models
are determined based on principles of mass and energy conservation.
Simulations verify the accuracy of the developed models. Due to the
nonlinear characteristics of attemperator, a new model, based on a
genetic-fuzzy systems utilizing Pittsburgh approach is developed
showing a promising performance vis-à-vis those derived with other
methods like ANFIS. The optimization constraints are handled
utilizing penalty functions. The effect of increasing the number of
rules and membership functions on the performance of the proposed
model is also studied and evaluated. The turbine model is developed
based on the equation of adiabatic expansion. Parameters of all
evaluated models are tuned by means of evolutionary algorithms.
Based on the developed model a fuzzy PI controller is developed. It
is then successfully implemented in the turbine follower control
strategy of the plant. In this control strategy instead of keeping
control parameters constant, they are adjusted on-line with regard to
the error and the error rate. It is shown that the response of the
system improves significantly. It is also shown that fuel consumption
decreases considerably.
Abstract: In this work, a new approach is proposed to control
the manipulators for Humanoid robot. The kinematics of the
manipulators in terms of joint positions, velocity, acceleration and
torque of each joint is computed using the Denavit Hardenberg (D-H)
notations. These variables are used to design the manipulator control
system, which has been proposed in this work. In view of supporting
the development of a controller, a simulation of the manipulator is
designed for Humanoid robot. This simulation is developed through
the use of the Virtual Reality Toolbox and Simulink in Matlab. The
Virtual Reality Toolbox in Matlab provides the interfacing and
controls to an environment which is developed based on the Virtual
Reality Modeling Language (VRML). Chains of bones were used to
represent the robot.
Abstract: Cooperative diversity (CD) has been adopted in many communication systems because it helps in improving performance of the wireless communication systems with the help of the relays that emulate the multiple antenna terminals. This work aims to provide the derivation of the performance analysis expressions of the multiuser diversity (MUD) in the two-hop cooperative multi-relay wireless networks (TCMRNs). Considering the work analysis, we provide analytically the derivation of a closed form expression of the two most commonly used performance metrics namely, the outage probability and the symbol error probability (SEP) for the fixed decode-and-forward (FDF) protocol with MUD.
Abstract: Ice cover County has a significant impact on rivers as it affects with the ice melting capacity which results in flooding, restrict navigation, modify the ecosystem and microclimate. River ices are made up of different ice types with varying ice thickness, so surveillance of river ice plays an important role. River ice types are captured using infrared imaging camera which captures the images even during the night times. In this paper the river ice infrared texture images are analysed using first-order statistical methods and secondorder statistical methods. The second order statistical methods considered are spatial gray level dependence method, gray level run length method and gray level difference method. The performance of the feature extraction methods are evaluated by using Probabilistic Neural Network classifier and it is found that the first-order statistical method and second-order statistical method yields low accuracy. So the features extracted from the first-order statistical method and second-order statistical method are combined and it is observed that the result of these combined features (First order statistical method + gray level run length method) provides higher accuracy when compared with the features from the first-order statistical method and second-order statistical method alone.
Abstract: The aerodynamic stall control of a baseline 13-percent
thick NASA GA(W)-2 airfoil using a synthetic jet actuator (SJA) is
presented in this paper. Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes
equations are solved on a hybrid grid using a commercial software to
simulate the effects of a synthetic jet actuator located at 13% of the
chord from the leading edge at a Reynolds number Re = 2.1x106 and
incidence angles from 16 to 22 degrees. The experimental data for the
pressure distribution at Re = 3x106 and aerodynamic coefficients at
Re = 2.1x106 (angle of attack varied from -16 to 22 degrees) without
SJA is compared with the computational fluid dynamic (CFD)
simulation as a baseline validation. A good agreement of the CFD
simulations is obtained for aerodynamic coefficients and pressure
distribution.
A working SJA has been integrated with the baseline airfoil and
initial focus is on the aerodynamic stall control at angles of attack
from 16 to 22 degrees. The results show a noticeable improvement in
the aerodynamic performance with increase in lift and decrease in
drag at these post stall regimes.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to test whether the Attention
Networks Test (ANT) showed temporal decrements in performance.
Vigilance tasks typically show such decrements, which may reflect
impairments in executive control resulting from cognitive fatigue.
The ANT assesses executive control, as well as alerting and
orienting. Thus, it was hypothesized that ANT executive control
would deteriorate over time. Manipulations including task condition
(trial composition) and masking were included in the experimental
design in an attempt to increase performance decrements. However,
results showed that there is no temporal decrement on the ANT. The
roles of task demands, cognitive fatigue and participant motivation in
producing this result are discussed. The ANT may not be an effective
tool for investigating temporal decrement in attention.
Abstract: Adapting wireless devices to communicate within grid
networks empowers us by providing range of possibilities.. These
devices create a mechanism for consumers and publishers to create
modern networks with or without peer device utilization. Emerging
mobile networks creates new challenges in the areas of reliability,
security, and adaptability. In this paper, we propose a system
encompassing mobility management using AAA context transfer for
mobile grid networks. This system ultimately results in seamless task
processing and reduced packet loss, communication delays,
bandwidth, and errors.
Abstract: We introduce an extended resource leveling model that abstracts real life projects that consider specific work ranges for each resource. Contrary to traditional resource leveling problems this model considers scarce resources and multiple objectives: the minimization of the project makespan and the leveling of each resource usage over time. We formulate this model as a multiobjective optimization problem and we propose a multiobjective genetic algorithm-based solver to optimize it. This solver consists in a two-stage process: a main stage where we obtain non-dominated solutions for all the objectives, and a postprocessing stage where we seek to specifically improve the resource leveling of these solutions. We propose an intelligent encoding for the solver that allows including domain specific knowledge in the solving mechanism. The chosen encoding proves to be effective to solve leveling problems with scarce resources and multiple objectives. The outcome of the proposed solvers represent optimized trade-offs (alternatives) that can be later evaluated by a decision maker, this multi-solution approach represents an advantage over the traditional single solution approach. We compare the proposed solver with state-of-art resource leveling methods and we report competitive and performing results.
Abstract: Development of a Robust Supply Chain for Dynamic
Operating Environment as we move further into the twenty first
century, organisations are under increasing pressure to deliver a high
product variation at a reasonable cost without compromise in quality.
In a number of cases this will take the form of a customised or high
variety low volume manufacturing system that requires prudent
management of resources, among a number of functions, to achieve
competitive advantage. Purchasing and Supply Chain management is
one of such function and due to the substantial interaction with
external elements needs to be strategically managed. This requires a
number of primary and supporting tools that will enable the
appropriate decisions to be made rapidly. This capability is
especially vital in a dynamic environment as it provides a pivotal role
in increasing the profit margin of the product. The management of
this function can be challenging by itself and even more for Small
and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) due to the limited resources and
expertise available at their disposal.
This paper discusses the development of tools and concepts
towards effectively managing the purchasing and supply chain
function. The developed tools and concepts will provide a cost
effective way of managing this function within SMEs. The paper
further shows the use of these tools within Contechs, a manufacturer
of luxury boat interiors, and the associated benefits achieved as a
result of this implementation. Finally a generic framework towards
use in such environments is presented.
Abstract: In recent years, the relevance feedback technology is regarded in content-based image retrieval. This paper suggests a neural networks feedback algorithm based on the radial basis function, coming to extract the semantic character of image. The results of experiment indicated that the performance of this relevance feedback is better than the feedback algorithm based on Single-RBF.
