Abstract: The inability to implement the principles of good
corporate governance (GCG) as demonstrated in the surveys is due to
a number of constraints which can be classified into three; namely internal constraints, external constraints, and constraints coming
from the structure of ownership. The issues in the internal constraints
mentioned are related to the function of several elements of the company. As a business organization, corporation is unable to
achieve its goal to successfully implement GCG principles since it is
not support by its internal elements- functions. Two of several numbers of internal elements of a company are ethical work climate
and leadership style of the top management.
To prove the correlation between internal function of organization
(in this case ethical work climate and transformational leadership)
and the successful implementation of GCG principles, this study
proposes two hypotheses to be empirically tested on thirty surveyed organizations; eleven of which are state-owned companies and
nineteen are private companies. These thirty corporations are listed in
the Jakarta Stock Exchange. All state-owned companies in the
samples are those which have been privatized.
The research showed that internal function of organization give
support to the successful implementation of GCG principle. In this
research we can prove that : (i) ethical work climate has positive
significance of correlation with the successful implementation of
social awareness principle (one of principles on GCG) and, (ii) only
at the state-owned companies, transformational leadership have
positive significance effect to forming the ethical work climate.
Abstract: Proteins levels produced by bacteria may be increased
in stressful surroundings, such as in the presence of antibiotics. It
appears that many antimicrobial agents or antibiotics, when used at
low concentrations, have in common the ability to activate or repress
gene transcription, which is distinct from their inhibitory effect.
There have been comparatively few studies on the potential of
antibiotics or natural compounds in nature as a specific chemical
signal that can trigger a variety of biological functions. Therefore,
this study was focusing on the effect of essential oils from
Cymbopogon flexuosus and C. nardus in regulating proteins
production by Bacillus subtilis ATCC 21332. The Minimum
Inhibition Concentrations (MICs) of both essential oils on B. subtilis
were determined by using microdilution assay, resulting 0.2% and
1.56% for each C. flexuosus and C. nardus subsequently. The
bacteria were further exposed to each essential oils at concentration
of 0.01XMIC for 2 days. The proteins were then isolated and
analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel
electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Protein profile showed that a band
with approximate size of 250 kD was appeared for the treated
bacteria with essential oils. Thus, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 21332 in
stressful condition with the presence of essential oils at low
concentration could induce the protein production.
Abstract: In pattern recognition applications the low level
segmentation and the high level object recognition are generally
considered as two separate steps. The paper presents a method that
bridges the gap between the low and the high level object
recognition. It is based on a Bayesian network representation and
network propagation algorithm. At the low level it uses hierarchical
structure of quadratic spline wavelet image bases. The method is
demonstrated for a simple circuit diagram component identification
problem.
Abstract: In this work a novel approach for color image
segmentation using higher order entropy as a textural feature for
determination of thresholds over a two dimensional image histogram
is discussed. A similar approach is applied to achieve multi-level
thresholding in both grayscale and color images. The paper discusses
two methods of color image segmentation using RGB space as the
standard processing space. The threshold for segmentation is decided
by the maximization of conditional entropy in the two dimensional
histogram of the color image separated into three grayscale images of
R, G and B. The features are first developed independently for the
three ( R, G, B ) spaces, and combined to get different color
component segmentation. By considering local maxima instead of the
maximum of conditional entropy yields multiple thresholds for the
same image which forms the basis for multilevel thresholding.
Abstract: The primary education system in Indonesia involved the community recognized as the school committee, to take a part in the process of achieving the quality of education via the school facility performance, the low level of school committee involvement in the education system has become the issue in the development of education and reflected to the quality of education. This paper will discuss the conceptual framework and methodology for the performance of school committees within the management of school facilities in Batubara district of Indonesia. The concepts of Community based Facility Management (CbFM) and Logometrix are used as a basis to measure the school committee performance in order to address the needs of quality school management. The data will be taken from questionnaires distributed for those who work and use school facilities spread over seven sub district of Batubara, Indonesia. The result of this study is expected to provide a guide for evaluating the performance of existing school committee in improving the quality of education in Indonesia.
Abstract: To investigate effect of salt stress on Chlorophyll
fluorescence four cultivars (fong,star,chamran and kharchia) of wheat
(Triticum aestivum) plants subjected to salinity levels ( control,8,12
and 16 dsm-1 ) from one week after emergence to the end of stem
elongation under greenhouse condition . results showed that quantum
yield of photosystem II from light adopted leaves (ΦPSII),
Photochemical quenching (qP) ,quantum yield of dark adopted leaves
(fv/fm) and non photochemical quenching (NPq) were affected by
salt stress . Salinity levels affected photosynthetic rate. Star and fong
cultivars showed minimum and maximum levels of photosynthetic
rate in respectively. Minimum photosynthetic rate differences
between levels of salinity were shown in Kharchia. Shoot dry matter
of all cultivars decreased by increasing salinity levels. Results
showed that non photochemical quenching by salinity levels attribute
to the decreases in shoot dry matter.
Abstract: The successful use of CDMA technology is based on
the construction of large families of encoding sequences with good
correlation properties. This paper discusses PN sequence generation
based on Residue Arithmetic with an effort to improve the performance
of existing interference-limited CDMA technology for mobile
cellular systems. All spreading codes with residual number system
proposed earlier did not consider external interferences, multipath
propagation, Doppler effect etc. In literature the use of residual
arithmetic in DS-CDMA was restricted to encoding of already spread
sequence; where spreading of sequence is done by some existing
techniques. The novelty of this paper is the use of residual number
system in generation of the PN sequences which is used to spread
the message signal. The significance of cross-correlation factor in
alleviating multi-access interference is also discussed. The RNS based
PN sequence has superior performance than most of the existing
codes that are widely used in DS-CDMA applications. Simulation
results suggest that the performance of the proposed system is
superior to many existing systems.
Abstract: Significant changes in oil and gas drilling have
emphasized the need to verify the integrity and reliability of drill
stem components. Defects are inevitable in cast components,
regardless of application; but if these defects go undetected, any
severe defect could cause down-hole failure.
One such defect is shrinkage porosity. Castings with lower level
shrinkage porosity (CB levels 1 and 2) have scattered pores and do
not occupy large volumes; so pressure testing and helium leak testing
(HLT) are sufficient for qualifying the castings. However, castings
with shrinkage porosity of CB level 3 and higher, behave erratically
under pressure testing and HLT making these techniques insufficient
for evaluating the castings- integrity.
This paper presents a case study to highlight how the radiography
technique is much more effective than pressure testing and HLT.
Abstract: With the rapid expansion of city scale and the
excessive concentration of population, achieving relative equality of
extracurricular education resources and improving spatial service
performance of relevant facilities become necessary arduous tasks. In
urban space, extracurricular education facilities should offer better
service to its targeted area and promote the equality and efficiency of
education, which is accomplished by the allocation of facilities. Based
on questionnaire and survey for local students in Hangzhou City in
2009, this study classifies extracurricular education facilities in
meg-city and defines the equalization of these facilities. Then it is
suggested to establish extracurricular education facilities system
according to the development level of city and demands of local
students, and to introduce a spatial analysis method into urban
planning through the aspects of spatial distribution, travel cost and
spatial service scope. Finally, the practice of nine sub-districts of
Hangzhou is studied.
Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinoma, also called hepatoma, most
commonly appears in a patient with chronic viral hepatitis. In
patients with a higher suspicion of HCC, such as small or subtle
rising of serum enzymes levels, the best method of diagnosis
involves a CT scan of the abdomen, but only at high cost. The aim of
this study was to increase the ability of the physician to early detect
HCC, using a probabilistic neural network-based approach, in order
to save time and hospital resources.
Abstract: This study extends research on the relationship
between marketing strategy and market segmentation by
investigating on market segments in the cement industry.
Competitive strength and rivals distance from the factory were used
as business environment. A three segment (positive, neutral or
indifferent and zero zones) were identified as strategic segments. For
each segment a marketing strategy (aggressive, defensive and
decline) were developed. This study employed data from cement
industry to fulfill two objectives, the first is to give a framework to
the segmentation of cement industry and the second is developing
marketing strategy with varying competitive strength. Fifty six
questionnaires containing close-and open-ended questions were
collected and analyzed. Results supported the theory that segments
tend to be more aggressive than defensive when competitive strength
increases. It is concluded that high strength segments follow total
market coverage, concentric diversification and frontal attack to their
competitors. With decreased competitive strength, Business tends to
follow multi-market strategy, product modification/improvement and
flank attack to direct competitors for this kind of segments. Segments
with weak competitive strength followed focus strategy and decline
strategy.
Abstract: Along with forward supply chain organization needs
to consider the impact of reverse logistics due to its economic
advantage, social awareness and strict legislations. In this paper, we
develop a system dynamics framework for a closed-loop supply
chain with fuzzy demand and fuzzy collection rate by incorporating
product exchange policy in forward channel and various recovery
options in reverse channel. The uncertainty issues associated with
acquisition and collection of used product have been quantified using
possibility measures. In the simulation study, we analyze order
variation at both retailer and distributor level and compare bullwhip
effects of different logistics participants over time between the
traditional forward supply chain and the closed-loop supply chain.
Our results suggest that the integration of reverse logistics can reduce
order variation and bullwhip effect of a closed-loop system. Finally,
sensitivity analysis is performed to examine the impact of various
parameters on recovery process and bullwhip effect.
Abstract: When programming in languages such as C, Java, etc.,
it is difficult to reconstruct the programmer's ideas only from the
program code. This occurs mainly because, much of the programmer's
ideas behind the implementation are not recorded in the code during
implementation. For example, physical aspects of computation such as
spatial structures, activities, and meaning of variables are not required
as instructions to the computer and are often excluded. This makes the
future reconstruction of the original ideas difficult. AIDA, which is a
multimedia programming language based on the cyberFilm model, can
solve these problems allowing to describe ideas behind programs
using advanced annotation methods as a natural extension to
programming. In this paper, a development environment that
implements the AIDA language is presented with a focus on the
annotation methods. In particular, an actual scientific numerical
computation code is created and the effects of the annotation methods
are analyzed.
Abstract: Context awareness is a capability whereby mobile
computing devices can sense their physical environment and adapt
their behavior accordingly. The term context-awareness, in
ubiquitous computing, was introduced by Schilit in 1994 and has
become one of the most exciting concepts in early 21st-century
computing, fueled by recent developments in pervasive computing
(i.e. mobile and ubiquitous computing). These include computing
devices worn by users, embedded devices, smart appliances, sensors
surrounding users and a variety of wireless networking technologies.
Context-aware applications use context information to adapt
interfaces, tailor the set of application-relevant data, increase the
precision of information retrieval, discover services, make the user
interaction implicit, or build smart environments. For example: A
context aware mobile phone will know that the user is currently in a
meeting room, and reject any unimportant calls. One of the major
challenges in providing users with context-aware services lies in
continuously monitoring their contexts based on numerous sensors
connected to the context aware system through wireless
communication. A number of context aware frameworks based on
sensors have been proposed, but many of them have neglected the
fact that monitoring with sensors imposes heavy workloads on
ubiquitous devices with limited computing power and battery. In this
paper, we present CALEEF, a lightweight and energy efficient
context aware framework for resource limited ubiquitous devices.
Abstract: Social bookmarking is an environment in which
the user gradually changes interests over time so that the tag
data associated with the current temporal period is usually more
important than tag data temporally far from the current period.
This implies that in the social tagging system, the newly tagged
items by the user are more relevant than older items. This study
proposes a novel recommender system that considers the users-
recent tag preferences. The proposed system includes the
following stages: grouping similar users into clusters using an
E-M clustering algorithm, finding similar resources based on
the user-s bookmarks, and recommending the top-N items to
the target user. The study examines the system-s information
retrieval performance using a dataset from del.icio.us, which is
a famous social bookmarking web site. Experimental results
show that the proposed system is better and more effective than
traditional approaches.
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to revisit the concept of
rape as represented by professionals in the literature as well as its
perception (beliefs and attitudes) in the population at large and to
propose methodological improvements to its measurement tool. Rape
is a serious crime threatening its victim-s physical and mental health
and integrity; and as such is legally prosecuted in all modern
societies. The problem is not in accepting or rejecting rape as a
criminal act, but rather in the vagueness of its interpretations and
“justifications" maintained in the mentality of modern societies -
known in the literature as the phenomenon of "rape-myth". The rapemyth
can be studied from different perspectives: criminology,
sociology, ethics, medicine and psychology. Its investigation requires
rigorous scientific objectivity, free of passion (victims of rape are at
risk of emotional bias), free of activism (social activists, even if wellintentioned
are also biased), free of any pre-emptive assumptions or
prejudices. To apply a rigorous scientific procedure, we need a solid,
valid and reliable measurement. Rape is a form of heterosexual or
homosexual aggression, violently forcing the victim to give-in in the
sexual activity of the aggressor against her/his will. Human beings
always try to “understand" or find a reason justifying their acts.
Psychological literature provides multiple clinical and experimental
examples of it; just to mention the famous studies by Milgram on the
level of electroshock delivered by the “teacher" towards the “learner"
if “scientifically justifiable" or the studies on the behavior of
“prisoners" and the “guards" and many other experiments and field
observations. Sigmund Freud presented the phenomenon of
unconscious justification and called it rationalization. The multiple
justifications, rationalizations and repeated opinions about sexual
behavior contribute to a myth maintained in the society. What kind of
“rationale" our societies apply to “understand" the non-consensual
sexual behavior? There are many, just to mention few:
• Sex is a ludistic activity for both participants, therefore –
even if not consented – it should bring pleasure to both.
• Everybody wants sex, but only men are allowed to manifest
it openly while women have to pretend the opposite, thus men have
to initiate sexual behavior and women would follow.
• A person who strongly needs sex is free to manifest it and
struggle to get it; the person who doesn-t want it must not reveal
her/his sexual attraction and avoid risky situations; otherwise she/he
is perceived as a promiscuous seducer.
• A person who doesn-t fight against the sexual initiator
unconsciously accepts the rape (does it explain why homosexual
rapes are reported less frequently than rapes against women?).
• Women who are raped deserve it because their wardrobe is
very revealing and seducing and they ''willingly'' go to highly risky
places (alleys, dark roads, etc.).
• Men need to ventilate their sexual energy and if they are
deprived of a partner their urge to have sex is difficult to control.
• Men are supposed to initiate and insist even by force to have
sex (their testosterone makes them both sexual and aggressive).
The paper overviews numerous cultural beliefs about masculine
versus feminine behavior and their impact on the “rape myth".
Abstract: Transportation is of great importance in the current
life of human beings. The transportation system plays many roles,
from economical development to after-catastrophe aids such as
rescue operation in the first hours and days after an earthquake. In
after earthquakes response phase, transportation system acts as a
basis for ground operations including rescue and relief operation,
food providing for victims and etc. It is obvious that partial or
complete obstruction of this system results in the stop of these
operations. Bridges are one of the most important elements of
transportation network. Failure of a bridge, in the most optimistic
case, cuts the relation between two regions and in more developed
countries, cuts the relation of numerous regions. In this paper, to
evaluate the vulnerability and estimate the damage level of Tehran
bridges, HAZUS method, developed by Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) with the aid of National Institute of
Building Science (NIBS), is used for the first time in Iran. In this
method, to evaluate the collapse probability, fragility curves are
used. Iran is located on seismic belt and thus, it is vulnerable to
earthquakes. Thus, the study of the probability of bridge collapses, as
an important part of transportation system, during earthquakes is of
great importance. The purpose of this study is to provide fragility
curves for Gisha Bridge, one of the longest steel bridges in Tehran,
as an important lifeline element. Besides, the damage probability for
this bridge during a specific earthquake, introduced as scenario
earthquakes, is calculated. The fragility curves show that for the
considered scenario, the probability of occurrence of complete
collapse for the bridge is 8.6%.
Abstract: Non-Destructive evaluation of in-service power
transformer condition is necessary for avoiding catastrophic failures.
Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) is one of the important methods.
Traditional, statistical and intelligent DGA approaches have been
adopted for accurate classification of incipient fault sources.
Unfortunately, there are not often enough faulty patterns required for
sufficient training of intelligent systems. By bootstrapping the
shortcoming is expected to be alleviated and algorithms with better
classification success rates to be obtained. In this paper the
performance of an artificial neural network, K-Nearest Neighbour
and support vector machine methods using bootstrapped data are
detailed and shown that while the success rate of the ANN algorithms
improves remarkably, the outcome of the others do not benefit so
much from the provided enlarged data space. For assessment, two
databases are employed: IEC TC10 and a dataset collected from
reported data in papers. High average test success rate well exhibits
the remarkable outcome.
Abstract: As chip manufacturing technology is suddenly on the
threshold of major evaluation, which shrinks chip in size and
performance, LFSR (Linear Feedback Shift Register) is implemented
in layout level which develops the low power consumption chip,
using recent CMOS, sub-micrometer layout tools. Thus LFSR
counter can be a new trend setter in cryptography and is also
beneficial as compared to GRAY & BINARY counter and variety of
other applications.
This paper compares 3 architectures in terms of the hardware
implementation, CMOS layout and power consumption, using
Microwind CMOS layout tool. Thus it provides solution to a low
power architecture implementation of LFSR in CMOS VLSI.
Abstract: This study presents the numerical simulation of
optimum pin-fin heat sink with air impinging cooling by using
Taguchi method. 9 L ( 4 3 ) orthogonal array is selected as a plan for
the four design-parameters with three levels. The governing
equations are discretized by using the
control-volume-based-finite-difference method with a power-law
scheme on the non-uniform staggered grid. We solved the coupling of
the velocity and the pressure terms of momentum equations using
SIMPLEC algorithm. We employ the k −ε two-equations
turbulence model to describe the turbulent behavior. The parameters
studied include fin height H (35mm-45mm), inter-fin spacing a , b ,
and c (2 mm-6.4 mm), and Reynolds number ( Re = 10000- 25000).
The objective of this study is to examine the effects of the fin
spacings and fin height on the thermal resistance and to find the
optimum group by using the Taguchi method. We found that the fin
spacings from the center to the edge of the heat sink gradually
extended, and the longer the fin’s height the better the results. The
optimum group is 3 1 2 3 H a b c . In addition, the effects of parameters are
ranked by importance as a , H , c , and b .
