Abstract: The technological concepts such as wireless hospital
and portable cardiac telemetry system require the development of
physiological signal acquisition devices to be easily integrated into
the hospital database. In this paper we present the low cost, portable
wireless ECG acquisition hardware that transmits ECG signals to a
dedicated computer. The front end of the system obtains and
processes incoming signals, which are then transmitted via a
microcontroller and wireless Bluetooth module. A monitoring
purpose Bluetooth based end user application integrated with patient
database management module is developed for the computers. The
system will act as a continuous event recorder, which can be used to
follow up patients who have been resuscitatedfrom cardiac arrest,
ventricular tachycardia but also for diagnostic purposes for patients
with arrhythmia symptoms. In addition, cardiac information can be
saved into the patient-s database of the hospital.
Abstract: Uncertainties of a serial production line affect on the
production throughput. The uncertainties cannot be prevented in a
real production line. However the uncertain conditions can be
controlled by a robust prediction model. Thus, a hybrid model
including autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and
multiple polynomial regression, is proposed to model the nonlinear
relationship of production uncertainties with throughput. The
uncertainties under consideration of this study are demand, breaktime,
scrap, and lead-time. The nonlinear relationship of production
uncertainties with throughput are examined in the form of quadratic
and cubic regression models, where the adjusted R-squared for
quadratic and cubic regressions was 98.3% and 98.2%. We optimized
the multiple quadratic regression (MQR) by considering the time
series trend of the uncertainties using ARIMA model. Finally the
hybrid model of ARIMA and MQR is formulated by better adjusted
R-squared, which is 98.9%.
Abstract: In this study, aeroelastic response and performance
analyses have been conducted for a 5MW-Class composite wind
turbine blade model. Advanced coupled numerical method based on
computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational flexible
multi-body dynamics (CFMBD) has been developed in order to
investigate aeroelastic responses and performance characteristics of
the rotating composite blade. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes
(RANS) equations with k-ω SST turbulence model were solved for
unsteady flow problems on the rotating turbine blade model. Also,
structural analyses considering rotating effect have been conducted
using the general nonlinear finite element method. A fully implicit
time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration
method is applied to solve the coupled aeroelastic governing equations
of the 3D turbine blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems.
Detailed dynamic responses and instantaneous velocity contour on the
blade surfaces which considering flow-separation effects were
presented to show the multi-physical phenomenon of the huge rotating
wind- turbine blade model.
Abstract: This is a cross-cultural study that determines South
African multinational enterprises (MNEs) entry strategies as they
invest in Africa. An integrated theoretical framework comprising the
transaction cost theory, Uppsala model, eclectic paradigm and the
distance framework was adopted. A sample of 40 South African
MNEs with 415 existing FDI entries in Africa was drawn. Using an
ordered logistic regression model, the impact of culture on the choice
of degree of control by South African MNEs in Africa was
determined. Cultural distance was one of significant factors that
influenced South African MNEs- choice of degree of control.
Furthermore, South African MNEs are risk averse in all countries in
Africa but minimize the risks differently across sectors. Service
sectors chooses to own their subsidiaries 100% and avoid dealing
with the locals while manufacturing, resources and construction
choose to have a local partner to share the risk.
Abstract: This paper presents a multi-objective order allocation
planning problem with the consideration of various real-world
production features. A novel hybrid intelligent optimization model,
integrating a multi-objective memetic optimization process, a Monte
Carlo simulation technique and a heuristic pruning technique, is
proposed to handle this problem. Experiments based on industrial data
are conducted to validate the proposed model. Results show that (1)
the proposed model can effectively solve the investigated problem by
providing effective production decision-making solutions, which
outperformsan NSGA-II-based optimization process and an industrial
method.
Abstract: Information Technology (IT) projects are always
accompanied by various risks and because of high rate of failure in
such projects, managing risks in order to neutralize or at least
decrease their effects on the success of the project is strongly
essential. In this paper, fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) is
exploited as a means of risk evaluation methodology to prioritize and
organize risk factors faced in IT projects. A real case of IT projects, a
project of design and implementation of an integrated information
system in a vehicle producing company in Iran is studied. Related
risk factors are identified and then expert qualitative judgments about
these factors are acquired. Translating these judgments to fuzzy
numbers and using them as an input to FAHP, risk factors are then
ranked and prioritized by FAHP in order to make project managers
aware of more important risks and enable them to adopt suitable
measures to deal with these highly devastative risks.
Abstract: Self-compacting concrete (SCC), a new kind of high
performance concrete (HPC) have been first developed in Japan in
1986. The development of SCC has made casting of dense
reinforcement and mass concrete convenient, has minimized noise.
Fresh self-compacting concrete (SCC) flows into formwork and
around obstructions under its own weight to fill it completely and
self-compact (without any need for vibration), without any
segregation and blocking. The elimination of the need for
compaction leads to better quality concrete and substantial
improvement of working conditions. SCC mixes generally have a
much higher content of fine fillers, including cement, and produce
excessively high compressive strength concrete, which restricts its
field of application to special concrete only. To use SCC mixes in
general concrete construction practice, requires low cost materials to
make inexpensive concrete.
Rice husk ash (RHA) has been used as a highly reactive
pozzolanic material to improve the microstructure of the interfacial
transition zone (ITZ) between the cement paste and the aggregate in
self compacting concrete. Mechanical experiments of RHA blended
Portland cement concretes revealed that in addition to the pozzolanic
reactivity of RHA (chemical aspect), the particle grading (physical
aspect) of cement and RHA mixtures also exerted significant
influences on the blending efficiency.
The scope of this research was to determine the usefulness of Rice
husk ash (RHA) in the development of economical self compacting
concrete (SCC). The cost of materials will be decreased by reducing
the cement content by using waste material like rice husk ash instead
of.
This paper presents a study on the development of Mechanical
properties up to 180 days of self compacting and ordinary concretes
with rice-husk ash (RHA), from a rice paddy milling industry in
Rasht (Iran). Two different replacement percentages of cement by
RHA, 10%, and 20%, and two different water/cementicious material
ratios (0.40 and 0.35), were used for both of self compacting and
normal concrete specimens. The results are compared with those of
the self compacting concrete without RHA, with compressive,
flexural strength and modulus of elasticity. It is concluded that RHA
provides a positive effect on the Mechanical properties at age after
60 days.
Base of the result self compacting concrete specimens have higher
value than normal concrete specimens in all test except modulus of
elasticity. Also specimens with 20% replacement of cement by RHA
have the best performance.
Abstract: This study examines causal link between energy use and economic growth for five South Asian countries over period 1971-2006. Panel cointegration, ECM and FMOLS are applied for short and long run estimates. In short run unidirectional causality from per capita GDP to per capita energy consumption is found, but not vice versa. In long run one percent increase in per capita energy consumption tend to decrease 0.13 percent per capita GDP. i.e. Energy use discourage economic growth. This short and long run relationship indicate energy shortage crisis in South Asia due to increased energy use coupled with insufficient energy supply. Beside this long run estimated coefficient of error term suggest that short term adjustment to equilibrium are driven by adjustment back to long run equilibrium. Moreover, per capita energy consumption is responsive to adjustment back to equilibrium and it takes 59 years approximately. It specifies long run feedback between both variables.
Abstract: Chronic hepatitis B can evolve to cirrhosis and liver
cancer. Interferon is the only effective treatment, for carefully selected
patients, but it is very expensive. Some of the selection criteria are
based on liver biopsy, an invasive, costly and painful medical procedure.
Therefore, developing efficient non-invasive selection systems,
could be in the patients benefit and also save money. We investigated
the possibility to create intelligent systems to assist the Interferon
therapeutical decision, mainly by predicting with acceptable accuracy
the results of the biopsy. We used a knowledge discovery in integrated
medical data - imaging, clinical, and laboratory data. The resulted
intelligent systems, tested on 500 patients with chronic hepatitis
B, based on C5.0 decision trees and boosting, predict with 100%
accuracy the results of the liver biopsy. Also, by integrating the other
patients selection criteria, they offer a non-invasive support for the
correct Interferon therapeutic decision. To our best knowledge, these
decision systems outperformed all similar systems published in the
literature, and offer a realistic opportunity to replace liver biopsy in
this medical context.
Abstract: We study the performance of compressed beamforming
weights feedback technique in generalized triangular decomposition
(GTD) based MIMO system. GTD is a beamforming technique that
enjoys QoS flexibility. The technique, however, will perform at its
optimum only when the full knowledge of channel state information
(CSI) is available at the transmitter. This would be impossible in
the real system, where there are channel estimation error and limited
feedback. We suggest a way to implement the quantized beamforming
weights feedback, which can significantly reduce the feedback data,
on GTD-based MIMO system and investigate the performance of
the system. Interestingly, we found that compressed beamforming
weights feedback does not degrade the BER performance of the
system at low input power, while the channel estimation error
and quantization do. For comparison, GTD is more sensitive to
compression and quantization, while SVD is more sensitive to the
channel estimation error. We also explore the performance of GTDbased
MU-MIMO system, and find that the BER performance starts
to degrade largely at around -20 dB channel estimation error.
Abstract: This paper deals with the thermo-mechanical deformation behavior of shear deformable functionally graded ceramicmetal (FGM) plates. Theoretical formulations are based on higher order shear deformation theory with a considerable amendment in the transverse displacement using finite element method (FEM). The mechanical properties of the plate are assumed to be temperaturedependent and graded in the thickness direction according to a powerlaw distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The temperature field is supposed to be a uniform distribution over the plate surface (XY plane) and varied in the thickness direction only. The fundamental equations for the FGM plates are obtained using variational approach by considering traction free boundary conditions on the top and bottom faces of the plate. A C0 continuous isoparametric Lagrangian finite element with thirteen degrees of freedom per node have been employed to accomplish the results. Convergence and comparison studies have been performed to demonstrate the efficiency of the present model. The numerical results are obtained for different thickness ratios, aspect ratios, volume fraction index and temperature rise with different loading and boundary conditions. Numerical results for the FGM plates are provided in dimensionless tabular and graphical forms. The results proclaim that the temperature field and the gradient in the material properties have significant role on the thermo-mechanical deformation behavior of the FGM plates.
Abstract: Kuwait-s electric power system is vertically integrated
organization owned and operated by the government. For more than
five decades, the government of Kuwait has provided relatively
reliable electric services to consumers with subsidized electric
service fees. Given the country-s rapid socio-economical
development and consequently the increase of electricity demand, a
question that inflicts itself: Is it necessary to reform the power system
to face the fast growing demand? This paper recommends that the
government should consider the private sector as a partner in
operating the power system. Therefore, power system restructuring is
needed to allow such partnership. There are challenges that prevent
such restructuring. Abstract recommendations toward resolving these
challenges are proposed.
Abstract: Biological reactions of individuals of a testing animal
to toxic substance are unique and can be used as an indication of the
existing of toxic substance. However, to distinguish such phenomenon
need a very complicate system and even more complicate to analyze
data in 3 dimensional. In this paper, a system to evaluate in vitro
biological activities to acute toxicity of stochastic self-affine
non-stationary signal of 3D goldfish swimming by using fractal
analysis is introduced. Regular digital camcorders are utilized by
proposed algorithm 3DCCPC to effectively capture and construct 3D
movements of the fish. A Critical Exponent Method (CEM) has been
adopted as a fractal estimator. The hypothesis was that the swimming
of goldfish to acute toxic would show the fractal property which
related to the toxic concentration. The experimental results supported
the hypothesis by showing that the swimming of goldfish under the
different toxic concentration has fractal properties. It also shows that
the fractal dimension of the swimming related to the pH value of FD Ôëê
0.26pH + 0.05. With the proposed system, the fish is allowed to swim
freely in all direction to react to the toxic. In addition, the trajectories
are precisely evaluated by fractal analysis with critical exponent
method and hence the results exhibit with much higher degree of
confidence.
Abstract: This paper presents the DC voltage control design of D-STATCOM when the D-STATCOM is used for load voltage regulation. Although, the DC voltage can be controlled by active current of the D-STATCOM, reactive current still affects the DC voltage. To eliminate this effect, the control strategy with elimination effect of the reactive current is proposed and the results of the control with and without the elimination the effect of the reactive current are compared. For obtaining the proportional and integral gains of the PI controllers, the symmetrical optimum and genetic algorithms methods are applied. The stability margin of these methods are obtained and discussed in detail. In addition, the performance of the DC voltage control based on symmetrical optimum and genetic algorithms methods are compared. Effectiveness of the controllers designed was verified through computer simulation performed by using Power System Tool Block (PSB) in SIMULINK/MATLAB. The simulation results demonstrated that the DC voltage control proposed is effective in regulating DC voltage when the DSTATCOM is used for load voltage regulation.
Abstract: The goal of this paper is to develop a model to
integrate “pricing" and “advertisement" for short life cycle products,
such as branded fashion clothing products. To achieve this goal, we
apply the concept of “Dynamic Pricing". There are two classes of
advertisements, for the brand (regardless of product) and for a
particular product. Advertising the brand affects the demand and
price of all the products. Thus, the model considers all these products
in relation with each other. We develop two different methods to
integrate both types of advertisement and pricing. The first model is
developed within the framework of dynamic programming. However,
due to the complexity of the model, this method cannot be applicable
for large size problems. Therefore, we develop another method,
called hieratical approach, which is capable of handling the real
world problems. Finally, we show the accuracy of this method, both
theoretically and also by simulation.
Abstract: Quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) from
atmospheric model as input to hydrological model in an integrated
hydro-meteorological flood forecasting system has been operational
in many countries worldwide. High-resolution numerical weather
prediction (NWP) models with grid cell sizes between 2 and 14 km
have great potential in contributing towards reasonably accurate QPF.
In this study the potential of two NWP models to forecast
precipitation for a flood-prone area in a tropical region is examined.
The precipitation forecasts produced from the Fifth Generation Penn
State/NCAR Mesoscale (MM5) and Weather Research and
Forecasting (WRF) models are statistically verified with the observed
rain in Kelantan River Basin, Malaysia. The statistical verification
indicates that the models have performed quite satisfactorily for low
and moderate rainfall but not very satisfactory for heavy rainfall.
Abstract: In this paper, a novel LVTSCR-based device for
electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection of integrated circuits (ICs) is
designed, fabricated and characterized. The proposed device is similar
to the conventional LVTSCR but it has an embedded PMOSFET in the
anode n-well to enhance the turn on speed, the clamping capability and
the robustness. This is possible because the embedded PMOSFET
provides the sub-path of ESD discharge current. The TLP, HBM and
MM testing are carried out to verify the ESD performance of the
proposed devices, which are fabricated in 0.35um
(Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) BCDMOS process. The device has the
robustness of 70mA/um that is higher about 60mA/um than the
LVTSCR, approximately.

Abstract: The technique of inducing micro ecosystem
restoration is one of aquatic ecology engineering methods used to
retrieve the polluted water. Batch scale study, pilot plant study, and
field study were carried out to observe the eutrophication using the
Inducing Ecology Restorative Symbiosis Agent (IERSA) consisting
mainly degraded products by using lactobacillus, saccharomycete,
and phycomycete. The results obtained from the experiments of the
batch scale and pilot plant study allowed us to development the
parameters for the field study. A pond, 5 m to the outlet of a lake,
with an area of 500 m2 and depth of 0.6-1.2 m containing about 500
tons of water was selected as a model. After the treatment with 10
mg IERSA/L water twice a week for 70 days, the micro restoration
mechanisms consisted of three stages (i.e., restoration, impact
maintenance, and ecology recovery experiment after impact). The
COD, TN, TKN, and chlorophyll a were reduced significantly in the
first week. Although the unexpected heavy rain and contaminate
from sewage system might slow the ecology restoration. However,
the self-cleaning function continued and the chlorophyll a reduced
for 50% in one month. In the 4th week, amoeba, paramecium, rotifer,
and red wriggle worm reappeared, and the number of fish flies
appeared up to1000 fish fries/m3. Those results proved that inducing
restorative mechanism can be applied to improve the eutrophication
and to control the growth of algae in the lakes by gaining the selfcleaning
through inducing and competition of microbes. The
situation for growth of fishes also can reach an excellent result due to
the improvement of water quality.
