Abstract: We investigate relaxation dynamics of a quantum
dipole emitter (QDE), e.g., a molecule or quantum dot, located near a
metal nanoparticle (MNP) exhibiting a dipolar localized surface
plasmon (LSP) resonance at the frequency of the QDE radiative
transition. It is shown that under the condition of the QDE-MNP
characteristic relaxation time being much shorter than that of the
QDE in free-space but much longer than the LSP lifetime. It is also
shown that energy dissipation in the QDE-MNP system is relatively
weak with the probability of the photon emission being about 0.75, a
number which, rather surprisingly, does not explicitly depend on the
metal absorption characteristics. The degree of entanglement
measured by the concurrency takes the maximum value, while the
distances between the QDEs and metal ball approximately are equal.
Abstract: This paper presents the design and fabrication of an
optical window for an optical modulator toward image sensing
applications. An optical window consists of micrometer-order SiO2
capillaries (porous solid) that can modulate transmission light
intensity by moving the liquid in and out of porous solid. A high
optical transmittance of the optical window can be achieved due to
refractive index matching when the liquid is penetrated into the
porous solid. Otherwise, its light transmittance is lower because of
light reflection and scattering by air holes and capillary walls. Silicon
capillaries fabricated by deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) process are
completely oxidized to form the SiO2 capillaries. Therefore, high
aspect ratio SiO2 capillaries can be achieved based on silicon
capillaries formed by DRIE technique. Large compressive stress of
the oxide causes bending of the capillary structure, which is reduced
by optimizing the design of device structure. The large stress of the
optical window can be released via thin supporting beams. A 7.2 mm
x 9.6 mm optical window area toward a fully integrated with the
image sensor format is successfully fabricated and its optical
transmittance is evaluated with and without inserting liquids (ethanol
and matching oil). The achieved modulation range is approximately
20% to 35% with and without liquid penetration in visible region
(wavelength range from 450 nm to 650 nm).
Abstract: The capability of exploiting the electronic charge and
spin properties simultaneously in a single material has made diluted
magnetic semiconductors (DMS) remarkable in the field of
spintronics. We report the designing of DMS based on zinc-blend
ZnO doped with Cr impurity. The full potential linearized augmented
plane wave plus local orbital FP-L(APW+lo) method in density
functional theory (DFT) has been adapted to carry out these
investigations. For treatment of exchange and correlation energy,
generalized gradient approximations have been used. Introducing Cr
atoms in the matrix of ZnO has induced strong magnetic moment
with ferromagnetic ordering at stable ground state. Cr:ZnO was found
to favor the short range magnetic interaction that
reflect tendency of Cr clustering. The electronic structure of ZnO is
strongly influenced in the presence of Cr impurity atoms where
impurity bands appear in the band gap.
Abstract: In this article, the antibiogram and heavy metal
resistance profile of the bacteria isolated from total 34 studied
animals (Pelophylax ridibundus = 12; Mauremys rivulata = 14;
Natrix natrix = 8) captured around the Biga Stream, are described.
There was no database information on antibiogram and heavy metal
resistance profile of bacteria from these area’s amphibians and
reptiles.
A total of 200 bacteria were successfully isolated from cloaca and
oral samples of the aquatic amphibians and reptiles as well as from
the water sample. According to Jaccard’s similarity index, the degree
of similarity in the bacterial flora was quite high among the
amphibian and reptile species under examination, whereas it was
different from the bacterial diversity in the water sample. The most
frequent isolates were A. hydrophila (31.5%), B. pseudomallei
(8.5%), and C. freundii (7%). The total numbers of bacteria obtained
were as follows: 45 in P. ridibundus, 45 in N. natrix 30 in M.
rivulata, and 80 in the water sample. The result showed that
cefmetazole was the most effective antibiotic to control the bacteria
isolated in this study and that approximately 93.33% of the bacterial
isolates were sensitive to this antibiotic. The multiple antibiotic
resistances (MAR) index indicated that P. ridibundus (0.95) > N.
natrix (0.89) > M. rivulata (0.39). Furthermore, all the tested heavy
metals (Pb+2, Cu+2, Cr+3, and Mn+2) inhibit the growth of the bacterial
isolates at different rates. Therefore, it indicated that the water source
of the animals was contaminated with both antibiotic residues and
heavy metals.
Abstract: Subspace channel estimation methods have been
studied widely, where the subspace of the covariance matrix is
decomposed to separate the signal subspace from noise subspace. The
decomposition is normally done by using either the eigenvalue
decomposition (EVD) or the singular value decomposition (SVD) of
the auto-correlation matrix (ACM). However, the subspace
decomposition process is computationally expensive. This paper
considers the estimation of the multipath slow frequency hopping
(FH) channel using noise space based method. In particular, an
efficient method is proposed to estimate the multipath time delays by
applying multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm which is
based on the null space extracted by the rank revealing LU (RRLU)
factorization. As a result, precise information is provided by the
RRLU about the numerical null space and the rank, (i.e., important
tool in linear algebra). The simulation results demonstrate the
effectiveness of the proposed novel method by approximately
decreasing the computational complexity to the half as compared
with RRQR methods keeping the same performance.
Abstract: Reliability allocation is quite important during early
design and development stages for a system to apportion its specified
reliability goal to subsystems. This paper improves the reliability
fuzzy allocation method, and gives concrete processes on determining
the factor and sub-factor sets, weight sets, judgment set, and
multi-stage fuzzy evaluation. To determine the weight of factor and
sub-factor sets, the modified trapezoidal numbers are proposed to
reduce errors caused by subjective factors. To decrease the fuzziness
in fuzzy division, an approximation method based on linear
programming is employed. To compute the explicit values of fuzzy
numbers, centroid method of defuzzification is considered. An
example is provided to illustrate the application of the proposed
reliability allocation method based on fuzzy arithmetic.
Abstract: A model was constructed to predict the amount of
solar radiation that will make contact with the surface of the earth in
a given location an hour into the future. This project was supported
by the Southern Company to determine at what specific times during
a given day of the year solar panels could be relied upon to produce
energy in sufficient quantities. Due to their ability as universal
function approximators, an artificial neural network was used to
estimate the nonlinear pattern of solar radiation, which utilized
measurements of weather conditions collected at the Griffin, Georgia
weather station as inputs. A number of network configurations and
training strategies were utilized, though a multilayer perceptron with
a variety of hidden nodes trained with the resilient propagation
algorithm consistently yielded the most accurate predictions. In
addition, a modeled direct normal irradiance field and adjacent
weather station data were used to bolster prediction accuracy. In later
trials, the solar radiation field was preprocessed with a discrete
wavelet transform with the aim of removing noise from the
measurements. The current model provides predictions of solar
radiation with a mean square error of 0.0042, though ongoing efforts
are being made to further improve the model’s accuracy.
Abstract: In this paper we propose a discrete tracking control of
nonholonomic mobile robots with two degrees of freedom. The
electromechanical model of a mobile robot moving on a horizontal
surface without slipping, with two rear wheels controlled by two
independent DC electric, and one front roal wheel is considered. We
present backstepping design based on the Euler approximate discretetime
model of a continuous-time plant. Theoretical considerations are
verified by numerical simulation.
Abstract: This paper examines the effect of the volatility of oil
prices on food price in South Africa using monthly data covering the
period 2002:01 to 2014:09. Food price is measured by the South
African consumer price index for food while oil price is proxied by
the Brent crude oil. The study employs the GARCH-in-mean VAR
model, which allows the investigation of the effect of a negative and
positive shock in oil price volatility on food price. The model also
allows the oil price uncertainty to be measured as the conditional
standard deviation of a one-step-ahead forecast error of the change in
oil price. The results show that oil price uncertainty has a positive
and significant effect on food price in South Africa. The responses of
food price to a positive and negative oil price shocks is asymmetric.
Abstract: The formulated problem of optimization of the
technological process of water treatment for thermal power plants is
considered in this article. The problem is of multiparametric nature.
To optimize the process, namely, reduce the amount of waste water, a
new technology was developed to reuse such water. A mathematical
model of the technology of wastewater reuse was developed.
Optimization parameters were determined. The model consists of a
material balance equation, an equation describing the kinetics of ion
exchange for the non-equilibrium case and an equation for the ion
exchange isotherm. The material balance equation includes a
nonlinear term that depends on the kinetics of ion exchange. A direct
problem of calculating the impurity concentration at the outlet of the
water treatment plant was numerically solved. The direct problem
was approximated by an implicit point-to-point computation
difference scheme. The inverse problem was formulated as relates to
determination of the parameters of the mathematical model of the
water treatment plant operating in non-equilibrium conditions. The
formulated inverse problem was solved. Following the results of
calculation the time of start of the filter regeneration process was
determined, as well as the period of regeneration process and the
amount of regeneration and wash water. Multi-parameter
optimization of water treatment process for thermal power plants
allowed decreasing the amount of wastewater by 15%.
Abstract: Previous studies on financial distress prediction choose
the conventional failing and non-failing dichotomy; however, the
distressed extent differs substantially among different financial
distress events. To solve the problem, “non-distressed”, “slightlydistressed”
and “reorganization and bankruptcy” are used in our article
to approximate the continuum of corporate financial health. This paper
explains different financial distress events using the two-stage method.
First, this investigation adopts firm-specific financial ratios, corporate
governance and market factors to measure the probability of various
financial distress events based on multinomial logit models.
Specifically, the bootstrapping simulation is performed to examine the
difference of estimated misclassifying cost (EMC). Second, this work
further applies macroeconomic factors to establish the credit cycle
index and determines the distressed cut-off indicator of the two-stage
models using such index. Two different models, one-stage and
two-stage prediction models are developed to forecast financial
distress, and the results acquired from different models are compared
with each other, and with the collected data. The findings show that the
one-stage model has the lower misclassification error rate than the
two-stage model. The one-stage model is more accurate than the
two-stage model.
Abstract: Analysis of the properties of coconut (Cocos nucifera)
and its oil was evaluated in this work using standard analytical
techniques. The analyses carried out include proximate composition
of the fruit, extraction of oil from the fruit using different process
parameters and physicochemical analysis of the extracted oil. The
results showed the percentage (%) moisture, crude lipid, crude
protein, ash and carbohydrate content of the coconut as 7.59, 55.15,
5.65, 7.35 and 19.51 respectively. The oil from the coconut fruit was
odourless and yellowish liquid at room temperature (30oC). The
treatment combinations used (leaching time, leaching temperature
and solute: solvent ratio) showed significant differences (P
Abstract: In this paper, we regard as a coded transmission over a
frequency-selective channel. We plan to study analytically the
convergence of the turbo-detector using a maximum a posteriori
(MAP) equalizer and a MAP decoder. We demonstrate that the
densities of the maximum likelihood (ML) exchanged during the
iterations are e-symmetric and output-symmetric. Under the Gaussian
approximation, this property allows to execute a one-dimensional
scrutiny of the turbo-detector. By deriving the analytical terminology
of the ML distributions under the Gaussian approximation, we confirm
that the bit error rate (BER) performance of the turbo-detector
converges to the BER performance of the coded additive white
Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel at high signal to noise ratio (SNR),
for any frequency selective channel.
Abstract: The work studied the effect of germination on
proximate, phenol and flavonoid content and antioxidant activities
(AOA) of African Yam been (AYB). Germination was done in
controlled dark chamber (100% RH, 28oC). The proximate, phenol
and flavonoid content and antioxidant activities before and after
germination were investigated. The crude protein, moisture, and
crude fiber content of germinated AYB were significantly higher

Abstract: The objective of this study was to assess whether
living in proximity to a roofing fiber cement factory in southern
Thailand was associated with physical, mental, social, and spiritual
health domains measured in a self-reported health risk assessment
(HRA) questionnaire. A cross-sectional study was conducted among
community members divided into two groups: near population (living
within 0-2km of factory) and far population (living within 2-5km of
factory) (N=198). A greater proportion of those living far from the
factory (65.34%) reported physical health problems than the near
group (51.04%) (p =0.032). This study has demonstrated that the near
population group had higher proportion of participants with positive
ratings on mental assessment (30.34%) and social health impacts
(28.42%) than far population group (10.59% and 16.67%,
respectively) (p
Abstract: The pullout strength had an effect on the stability of
plate screw fixation when inserted in the cervical spine. Nine
different titanium alloy bone screws were used to test the pullout
strength through finite element analysis. The result showed that the
Moss Miami I can bear the highest pullout force at 1,075 N, which
causes the maximum von Mises stress at 858.87 MPa, a value over
the yield strength of titanium. The bone screw should have large
outer diameter, core diameter and proximal root radius to increase the
pullout strength.
Abstract: This article is trying to determine the status of flue gas
that is entering the KWH heat exchanger from combustion chamber
in order to calculate the heat transfer ratio of the heat exchanger.
Combination of measurement, calculation and computer simulation
was used to create a useful way to approximate the heat transfer rate.
The measurements were taken by a number of sensors that are
mounted on the experimental device and by a thermal imaging
camera. The results of the numerical calculation are in a good
correspondence with the real power output of the experimental
device. That result shows that the research has a good direction and
can be used to propose changes in the construction of the heat
exchanger, but still needs enhancements.
Abstract: The study of the electrical signals produced by neural
activities of human brain is called Electroencephalography. In this
paper, we propose an automatic and efficient EEG signal
classification approach. The proposed approach is used to classify the
EEG signal into two classes: epileptic seizure or not. In the proposed
approach, we start with extracting the features by applying Discrete
Wavelet Transform (DWT) in order to decompose the EEG signals
into sub-bands. These features, extracted from details and
approximation coefficients of DWT sub-bands, are used as input to
Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The classification is based on
reducing the feature dimension using PCA and deriving the supportvectors
using Support Vector Machine (SVM). The experimental are
performed on real and standard dataset. A very high level of
classification accuracy is obtained in the result of classification.
Abstract: This study was carried out to evaluate the nutritional
composition of the African River Prawn (Macrobrachium
vollenhovenii) in relation to Chokor (traditional) and Altona
(improved traditional) drying techniques used in the preservation and
processing of prawns by carrying out proximate composition
analysis. The value obtained for the proximate analysis of Chokor
and Altona smoke dried prawns were; Moisture (14.90% and
15.15%), Dry matter (85.10% and 84.85%), Protein (55.80% and
58.87%), Crude fat (1.95% and 1.98%), Crude fibre (21.40% and
13.11%), Carbohydrate (0.54% and 0.54%) and Ash (19.76% and
15.86%) respectively. The proximate mineral composition of Chokor
and Altona smoke dried prawns were; Calcium (5.66% and 4.20%)
and Phosphorus (9. 22% and 6.34%) respectively. Result shows there
was no loss of nutritional value with respect to Chokor and Altona
drying techniques used in the processing of prawns.
Abstract: Physical properties of uranium dinitride (UN2) were
investigated in detail using first principle calculations based on
density functional theory (DFT). To study the strong correlation
effects due to 5f uranium valence electrons, the on-site coulomb
interaction correction U via the Hubbard-like term (DFT+U) was
employed. The UN2 structural, mechanical and thermodynamic
properties were calculated within DFT and Various U of DFT+U
approach.
The Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE.5.2) version of the
generalized gradient approximation (GGA) is used to describe the
exchange-correlation with the projector-augmented wave (PAW)
pseudo potentials.
A comparative study shows that results are improved by using the
Hubbard formalism for a certain U value correction like the structural
parameter. For some physical properties the variation versus
Hubbard-U is strong like Young modulus but for others it is weakly
noticeable such as bulk modulus.
We noticed also that from U=7.5 eV, elastic results don’t agree
with the cubic cell because of the C44 values which turn out to be
negative.
