University, industry and government need to cooperate for getting best results. The intellectual property is one of the indicators to determine innovation level in the country or organization, and patents are one of the characteristics of intellectual property. The objective of the article is to determine indicators characterizing innovative environment in Latvia and influence of the development of universities on them. The methods that will be used in the article to achieve the objectives are quantitative and qualitative analysis of the literature, statistical data analysis and graphical analysis methods.
Abstract: Breastfeeding is an important concept in the maternal life of a woman. In this paper, we focus on exclusive breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding is the feeding of a baby on no other milk apart from breast milk. This type of breastfeeding is very important during the first six months because it supports optimal growth and development during infancy and reduces the risk of obliterating diseases and problems. Moreover, in Mauritius, exclusive breastfeeding has decreased the incidence and/or severity of diarrhea, lower respiratory infection and urinary tract infection. In this paper, we give an overview of exclusive breastfeeding in Mauritius and the factors influencing it. We further analyze the local practices of exclusive breastfeeding using the Generalized Poisson regression model and the negative-binomial model since the data are over-dispersed.
Abstract: Water contains oxygen which may make a human
breathe under water like a fish. Centrifugal separator can separate
dissolved gases from water. Carrier solution can increase the
separation of dissolved oxygen from water. But, to develop an
breathing device for a human under water, the enhancement of
separation of dissolved gases including oxygen and portable devices
which have dc battery based device and proper size are needed.
In this study, we set up experimental device for analyzing
separation characteristics of dissolved gases including oxygen from
water using a battery based portable vacuum pump. We characterized
vacuum state, flow rate of separation of dissolved gases and oxygen
concentration which were influenced by the manufactured vacuum
pump.
Abstract: The stability of Newtonian and Non-Newtonian extending films under local or global heating or cooling conditions are considered. The thickness-averaged mass, momentum and energy equations with convective and radiative heat transfer are derived, both for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids (Maxwell, PTT and Giesekus models considered). The stability of the system is explored using either eigenvalue analysis or transient simulations. The results showed that the influence of heating and cooling on stability strongly depends on the magnitude of the Peclet number. Examples of stabilization or destabilization of heating or cooling are shown for Pe
Abstract: In this paper bi-annual time series data on unemployment rates (from the Labour Force Survey) are expanded to quarterly rates and linked to quarterly unemployment rates (from the Quarterly Labour Force Survey). The resultant linked series and the consumer price index (CPI) series are examined using Johansen’s cointegration approach and vector error correction modeling. The study finds that both the series are integrated of order one and are cointegrated. A statistically significant co-integrating relationship is found to exist between the time series of unemployment rates and the CPI. Given this significant relationship, the study models this relationship using Vector Error Correction Models (VECM), one with a restriction on the deterministic term and the other with no restriction.
A formal statistical confirmation of the existence of a unique linear and lagged relationship between inflation and unemployment for the period between September 2000 and June 2011 is presented. For the given period, the CPI was found to be an unbiased predictor of the unemployment rate. This relationship can be explored further for the development of appropriate forecasting models incorporating other study variables.
Abstract: Zero inflated strict arcsine model is a newly developed
model which is found to be appropriate in modeling overdispersed
count data. In this study, we extend zero inflated strict arcsine model
to zero inflated strict arcsine regression model by taking into
consideration the extra variability caused by extra zeros and
covariates in count data. Maximum likelihood estimation method is
used in estimating the parameters for this zero inflated strict arcsine
regression model.
Abstract: This study proposes a conceptual model and
empirically tests the relationships between customers and librarians
(i.e. tangibles, responsiveness, assurance, reliability and empathy)
with a dependent variable (customer satisfaction) regarding library
services. The SERVQUAL instrument was administered to 100
respondents which comprises of staff and students at a public higher
learning institution in the Federal Territory of Labuan, Malaysia.
They were public university library users. Results revealed that all
service quality dimensions tested were significant and influenced
customer satisfaction of visitors to a public university library.
Assurance is the most important factor that influences customer
satisfaction with the services rendered by the librarian. It is
imperative for the library management to take note that the top five
service attributes that gained greatest attention from library visitors-
perspective includes employee willingness to help customers,
availability of customer representatives online for response to
queries, library staff actively and promptly provide services, signs in
the building are clear and library staff are friendly and courteous.
This study provides valuable results concerning the determinants of
the service quality and customer satisfaction of public university
library services from the users' perspective.
Abstract: The response surface methodology (RSM) is a
collection of mathematical and statistical techniques useful in the
modeling and analysis of problems in which the dependent variable
receives the influence of several independent variables, in order to
determine which are the conditions under which should operate these
variables to optimize a production process. The RSM estimated a
regression model of first order, and sets the search direction using the
method of maximum / minimum slope up / down MMS U/D.
However, this method selects the step size intuitively, which can
affect the efficiency of the RSM. This paper assesses how the step
size affects the efficiency of this methodology. The numerical
examples are carried out through Monte Carlo experiments,
evaluating three response variables: efficiency gain function, the
optimum distance and the number of iterations. The results in the
simulation experiments showed that in response variables efficiency
and gain function at the optimum distance were not affected by the
step size, while the number of iterations is found that the efficiency if
it is affected by the size of the step and function type of test used.
Abstract: A steady two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics
flow and heat transfer over a stretching vertical sheet influenced by
radiation and porosity is studied. The governing boundary layer
equations of partial differential equations are reduced to a system of
ordinary differential equations using similarity transformation. The
system is solved numerically by using a finite difference scheme
known as the Keller-box method for some values of parameters,
namely the radiation parameter N, magnetic parameter M, buoyancy
parameter l , Prandtl number Pr and permeability parameter K. The
effects of the parameters on the heat transfer characteristics are
analyzed and discussed. It is found that both the skin friction
coefficient and the local Nusselt number decrease as the magnetic
parameter M and permeability parameter K increase. Heat transfer
rate at the surface decreases as the radiation parameter increases.
Abstract: A diamond-like carbon (DLC) based solid-lubricant
film was designed and DLC films were successfully prepared using a
microwave plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering deposition
technology. Post-test characterizations including Raman
spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, nano-indentation test, adhesion test,
friction coefficient test were performed to study the influence of
substrate bias voltage on the mechanical properties of the W- and
S-doped DLC films. The results indicated that the W- and S-doped
DLC films also had the typical structure of DLC films and a better
mechanical performance achieved by the application of a substrate
bias of -200V.
Abstract: Physical urban form is recognized to be the media for
human transactions. It directly influences the travel demand of people
in a specific urban area and the amount of energy used for
transportation. Distorted, sprawling form often creates sustainability
problems in urban areas. It is declared in EU strategic planning
documents that compact urban form and mixed land use pattern must
be given the main focus to achieve better sustainability in urban
areas, but the methods to measure and compare these characteristics
are still not clear.
This paper presents the simple methods to measure the spatial
characteristics of urban form by analyzing the location and
distribution of objects in an urban environment. The extended CA
(cellular automata) model is used to simulate urban development
scenarios.
Abstract: This paper presents a system for discovering
association rules from collections of unstructured documents called
EART (Extract Association Rules from Text). The EART system
treats texts only not images or figures. EART discovers association
rules amongst keywords labeling the collection of textual documents.
The main characteristic of EART is that the system integrates XML
technology (to transform unstructured documents into structured
documents) with Information Retrieval scheme (TF-IDF) and Data
Mining technique for association rules extraction. EART depends on
word feature to extract association rules. It consists of four phases:
structure phase, index phase, text mining phase and visualization
phase. Our work depends on the analysis of the keywords in the
extracted association rules through the co-occurrence of the keywords
in one sentence in the original text and the existing of the keywords
in one sentence without co-occurrence. Experiments applied on a
collection of scientific documents selected from MEDLINE that are
related to the outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza virus.
Abstract: In this paper we discuss the behaviour of the longitudinal modes of a magnetized non collisional plasma subjected to an external electromagnetic field. We apply a semiclassical formalism, with the electrons being studied in a quantum mechanical viewpoint whereas the electromagnetic field in the classical context. We calculate the dielectric function in order to obtains the modes and found that, unlike the Bernstein modes, the presence of radiation induces oscillations around the cyclotron harmonics, which are smoothed as the energy stored in the radiation field becomes small compared to the thermal energy of the electrons. We analyze the influence of the number of photon involved in the electronic transitions between the Landau levels and how the parameters such as the external fields strength, plasma density and temperature affect the dispersion relation
Abstract: The main objective of this paper is to determine the
isolated effect of silica fume on tensile, compressive and flexure strengths on high strength lightweight concrete. Many experiments
were carried out by replacing cement with different percentages of silica fume at different constant water-binder ratio keeping other mix
design variables constant. The silica fume was replaced by 0%, 5%,
10%, 15%, 20% and 25% for a water-binder ratios ranging from 0.26
to 0.42. For all mixes, split tensile, compressive and flexure strengths
were determined at 28 days. The results showed that the tensile, compressive and flexure strengths increased with silica fume incorporation but the optimum replacement percentage is not
constant because it depends on the water–cementitious material (w/cm) ratio of the mix. Based on the results, a relationship between
split tensile, compressive and flexure strengths of silica fume concrete was developed using statistical methods.
Abstract: The utilization of renewable energy sources in electric
power systems is increasing quickly because of public apprehensions
for unpleasant environmental impacts and increase in the energy
costs involved with the use of conventional energy sources. Despite
the application of these energy sources can considerably diminish the
system fuel costs, they can also have significant influence on the
system reliability. Therefore an appropriate combination of the
system reliability indices level and capital investment costs of system
is vital. This paper presents a hybrid wind/photovoltaic plant, with
the aim of supplying IEEE reliability test system load pattern while
the plant capital investment costs is minimized by applying a hybrid
particle swarm optimization (PSO) / harmony search (HS) approach,
and the system fulfills the appropriate level of reliability.
Abstract: Drying characteristics of rough rice (variety of lenjan) with an initial moisture content of 25% dry basis (db) was studied in a hot air dryer assisted by infrared heating. Three arrival air temperatures (30, 40 and 500C) and four infrared radiation intensities (0, 0.2 , 0.4 and 0.6 W/cm2) and three arrival air speeds (0.1, 0.15 and 0.2 m.s-1) were studied. Bending strength of brown rice kernel, percentage of cracked kernels and time of drying were measured and evaluated. The results showed that increasing the drying arrival air temperature and radiation intensity of infrared resulted decrease in drying time. High bending strength and low percentage of cracked kernel was obtained when paddy was dried by hot air assisted infrared dryer. Between this factors and their interactive effect were a significant difference (p
Abstract: This study investigated the pattern and seasonal index of influenza cases in Thailand. Our results showed that southern Thailand had the highest influenza incidence among the four regions of Thailand (i.e. north, northeast, central and southern Thailand). The influenza pattern in southern Thailand was similar to that of northeastern Thailand. Seasonal index values of influenza cases in Thailand were higher in the hot season than in the wet season. Influenza cases started to increase at the beginning of the hot season (April), reached a maximum in August, rapidly declined in the middle of the wet season and reached the lowest value in December. Seasonal index values for northern Thailand differed from other regions of Thailand.
Abstract: Apart from geometry, functionality is one of the most
significant hallmarks of a product. The functionality of a product can
be considered as the fundamental justification for a product
existence. Therefore a functional analysis including a complete and
reliable descriptor has a high potential to improve product
development process in various fields especially in knowledge-based
design. One of the important applications of the functional analysis
and indexing is in retrieval and design reuse concept. More than 75%
of design activity for a new product development contains reusing
earlier and existing design know-how. Thus, analysis and
categorization of product functions concluded by functional
indexing, influences directly in design optimization. This paper
elucidates and evaluates major classes for functional analysis by
discussing their major methods. Moreover it is finalized by
presenting a noble hybrid approach for functional analysis.
Abstract: Organizational innovation favors technological
innovation, but does it also influence technological innovation
persistence? This article investigates empirically the pattern of
technological innovation persistence and tests the potential impact of
organizational innovation using firm-level data from three waves of
the French Community Innovation Surveys. Evidence shows a
positive effect of organizational innovation on technological
innovation persistence, according to various measures of
organizational innovation. Moreover, this impact is more significant
for complex innovators (i.e., those who innovate in both products and
processes). These results highlight the complexity of managing
organizational practices with regard to the firm-s technological
innovation. They also add to comprehension of the drivers of
innovation persistence, through a focus on an often forgotten
dimension of innovation in a broader sense.
Abstract: Traditionally, Yemini Sidr honey has been reported to
cure liver problems, stomach ulcers, and respiratory disorders. In this
experiment, we evaluated Yemeni Sidr honey for its ability to protect
inflammations caused by acetic acid and formalin -induced writhing,
carrageenan and histamine-induced paw oedema in experimental rat
model. Hyperpyrexia, membrane stabilizing activity, and
phytochemical screening of the honey was also examined. Yemini
Sidr Honey at (100, 200 and 500 mg/kg) exhibited a concentration
dependant inhibition of acetic acid induced and formalin induced
writhing, paw oedema induced by carrageenan & histamine, and
hyperpyrexia induced by brewer's yeast, it also inhibited membrane
stabilizing activity. Phytochemical screenings of the honey reveal the
presence of flavonoids, steroid, alkaloids, saponins and tannins. This
study suggested that Yemeni Sidr honey possess very strong antiinflammatory,
analgesic and antipyretic effects and these effects
would be a result of the phytochemicals present.
