Abstract: This research paper presents highly optimized barrel
shifter at 22nm Hi K metal gate strained Si technology node. This
barrel shifter is having a unique combination of static and dynamic
body bias which gives lowest power delay product. This power delay
product is compared with the same circuit at same technology node
with static forward biasing at ‘supply/2’ and also with normal reverse
substrate biasing and still found to be the lowest. The power delay
product of this barrel sifter is .39362X10-17J and is lowered by
approximately 78% to reference proposed barrel shifter at 32nm bulk
CMOS technology. Power delay product of barrel shifter at 22nm Hi
K Metal gate technology with normal reverse substrate bias is
2.97186933X10-17J and can be compared with this design’s PDP of
.39362X10-17J. This design uses both static and dynamic substrate
biasing and also has approximately 96% lower power delay product
compared to only forward body biased at half of supply voltage. The
NMOS model used are predictive technology models of Arizona state
university and the simulations to be carried out using HSPICE
simulator.
Abstract: This paper investigates and compares the community
support for tourism development between two groups of minority
ethnic descendants in Malacca, Malaysia, namely the Baba-Nyonya
and Portuguese. A descriptive research design using a quantitative
method with self-reported and self-administered questionnaires
through across-sectional approach was applied. Through the
descriptive and inferential statistics, some significantly useful
insights pertaining to the issue investigated were obtained. The
research outcomes indicate that the sense of community is somewhat
more effective in small communities in terms of togetherness,
closeness and a sense of belonging compared to the slightly bigger
minority group. In addition, the sense of community attributes
through membership, influence, integration and shared emotional
connections contributes to community participation in tourism
development regardless of which ethnic group one belongs to.
Abstract: Quantitative analyses of whisker movements provide a
means to study functional recovery and regeneration of mouse facial
nerve after an injury. However, accurate tracking of the mouse whisker
movement is challenging. Most methods for whisker tracking require
manual intervention, e.g. fixing the head of the mouse during a study.
Here we describe a semi-automated image processing method, which
is applied to high-speed video recordings of free-moving mice to track
the whisker movements. We first track the head movement of a mouse
by delineating the lower head contour frame-by-frame that allows for
detection of the location and orientation of the head. Then, a region of
interest is identified for each frame; the subsequent application of a
mask and the Hough transform detects the selected whiskers on each
side of the head. Our approach is used to examine the functional
recovery of damaged facial nerves in mice over a course of 21 days.
Abstract: The aim of the current study was to develop and
validate a Response to Stressful Situations Scale (RSSS) for the
Portuguese population. This scale assesses the degree of stress
experienced in scenarios that can constitute positive, negative and
more neutral stressors, and also describes the physiological,
emotional and behavioral reactions to those events according to their
intensity. These scenarios include typical stressor scenarios relevant
to patients with schizophrenia, which are currently absent from most
scales, assessing specific risks that these stressors may bring on
subjects, which may prove useful in non-clinical and clinical
populations (i.e. Patients with mood or anxiety disorders,
schizophrenia). Results from Principal Components Analysis and
Confirmatory Factor Analysis of two adult samples from general
population allowed to confirm a three-factor model with good fit
indices: χ2 (144)= 370.211, p = 0.000; GFI = 0.928; CFI = 0.927; TLI =
0.914, RMSEA = 0.055, P(rmsea ≤0.005) = .096; PCFI = .781.
Further data analysis of the scale revealed that RSSS is an adequate
assessment tool of stress response in adults to be used in further
research and clinical settings, with good psychometric characteristics,
adequate divergent and convergent validity, good temporal stability
and high internal consistency.
Abstract: Brass terminal, one of the several crude oil and
petroleum products storage/handling facilities in the Niger Delta was
built in the 1980s. Activities at this site, over the years, released
crude oil into this 3 m-deep, 1500 m-long canal lying adjacent to the
terminal with oil floating on it and its sediment heavily polluted. To
ensure effective clean-up, three major activities were planned: site
characterization, bioremediation pilot plant construction and testing
and full-scale bioremediation of contaminated sediment / bank soil by
land farming. The canal was delineated into 12 lots and each
characterized, with reference to the floating oily phase, contaminated
sediment and canal bank soil. As a result of site characterization, a
pilot plant for on-site bioremediation was designed and a treatment
basin constructed for carrying out pilot bioremediation test.
Following a designed sampling protocol, samples from this pilot
plant were collected for analysis at two laboratories as a quality
assurance / quality control check. Results showed that Brass Canal
upstream is contaminated with dark, thick and viscous oily film with
characteristic hydrocarbon smell while downstream, thin oily film
interspersed with water was observed. Sediments were observed to be
dark with mixture of brownish sandy soil with TPH ranging from
17,800 mg/kg in Lot 1 to 88,500 mg/kg in Lot 12 samples. Brass
Canal bank soil was observed to be sandy from ground surface to 3m,
below ground surface (bgs) it was silty-sandy and brownish while
subsurface soil (4-10m bgs) was sandy-clayey and whitish/grayish
with typical hydrocarbon smell. Preliminary results obtained so far
have been very promising but were proprietary. This project is
considered, to the best of technical literature knowledge, the first
large-scale on-site bioremediation project in the Niger Delta region,
Nigeria.

Abstract: Microstructural and hardening changes of
Fe-0.2wt.%V alloy and pure Fe irradiated with 100 keV hydrogen ions
at room temperature were investigated. It was found that dislocation
density varies dramatically after irradiation, ranging from dislocation
free to dense areas with tangled and complex dislocation
configuration. As the irradiated Fe-0.2wt.%V samples were annealed
at 773 K, the irradiation-induced dislocation loops disappear, while
many small precipitates with enriched C distribute in the matrix. Some
large precipitates with enriched V were also observed. The hardness of
Fe-0.2wt.%V alloy and pure Fe increases after irradiation, which
ascribes to the formation of dislocation loops in the irradiated
specimens. Compared with pure Fe, the size of the
irradiation-introduced dislocation loops in Fe-0.2wt.%V alloy
decreases and the density increases, the change of the hardness also
decreases.
Abstract: Phthalates are ubiquitous environmental pollutants
well known because of their endocrine disrupting activity in human
organism. The aim of our study was, by biological monitoring,
investigate exposure to phthalates of Roma ethnicity group i.e.
children and adults from 5 families (n=29, average age 11.8 ± 7.6
years) living in western Slovakia. Additionally, we analysed some
associations between anthropometric measures, questionnaire data
i.e. socio-economic status, eating and drinking habits, practise of
personal care products and household conditions in comparison with
concentrations of phthalate metabolites. We used for analysis of urine
samples high performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass
spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) to determine concentrations of
phthalate metabolites monoethyl phthalate (MEP), mono-n-butyl
phthalate (MnBP), mono-iso-butyl phthalate (MiBP), mono(2-ethyl-
5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (5OH-MEHP), mono(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl)
phthalate (5oxo-MEHP) and mono(2-etylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP).
Our results indicate that ethnicity, lower socioeconomic status and
different housing conditions in Roma population can affect urinary
concentration of phthalate metabolites.
Abstract: The separation of Hg (II) from produced water by
hollow fiber contactors (HFC) was investigation. This system
included of two hollow fiber modules in the series connecting. The
first module used for the extraction reaction and the second module
for stripping reaction. Aliquat336 extractant was fed from the organic
reservoirs into the shell side of the first hollow fiber module and
continuous to the shell side of the second module. The organic liquid
was continuously feed recirculate and back to the reservoirs. The feed
solution was pumped into the lumen (tube side) of the first hollow
fiber module. Simultaneously, the stripping solution was pumped in
the same way in tube side of the second module. The feed and
stripping solution was fed which had a countercurrent flow. Samples
were kept in the outlet of feed and stripping solution at 1 hour and
characterized concentration of Hg (II) by Inductively Couple Plasma
Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Feed solution was
produced water from natural gulf of Thailand. The extractant was
Aliquat336 dissolved in kerosene diluent. Stripping solution used was
nitric acid (HNO3) and thiourea (NH2CSNH2). The effect of carrier
concentration and type of stripping solution were investigated.
Results showed that the best condition were 10 % (v/v) Aliquat336
and 1.0 M NH2CSNH2. At the optimum condition, the extraction and
stripping of Hg (II) were 98% and 44.2%, respectively.
Abstract: Dielectric ceramic samples in the BaO-Re2O3-TiO2
ternary system were synthesized with structural formula Ba2-
xRe4+2x/3Ti8O24 where Re= rare earth metal and Re= Sm and La where
x varies from 0.0 to 0.6 with step size 0.1. Polycrystalline samples
were prepared by the conventional solid state reaction technique. The
dielectric, electrical and impedance analysis of all the samples in the
frequency range 1KHz- 1MHz at room temperature (25°C) have been
done to get the understanding of electrical conduction and dielectric
relaxation and their correlation. Dielectric response of the samples at
lower frequencies shows dielectric dispersion while at higher
frequencies it shows dielectric relaxation. The ac conductivity is well
fitted by the Jonscher law. The spectroscopic data in the impedance
plane confirms the existence of grain contribution to the relaxation.
All the properties are found out to be function of frequency as well as
the amount of substitution.
Abstract: This paper examines the utilization of public-private
partnerships for the building and operation of wastewater treatment
plants. Our research focuses on risk allocation in this kind of projects.
Our analysis builds on more than hundred wastewater treatment
plants built and operated through PPP projects in Aragon (Spain).
The paper illustrates the consequences of an inadequate management
of construction risk and an unsuitable transfer of demand risk in
wastewater treatment plants. It also shows that the involvement of
many public bodies at local, regional and national level further
increases the complexity of this kind of projects and make time
delays more likely.
Abstract: Medicinal plants are now gaining attractiveness in
treatment of bacterial infections and food preservation. The objective
of this study was to assess antibacterial activity of some medicinal
plants on pathogenic bacteria. Screening of antibacterial activity of
aqueous and methanol extracts of some plants: Jojoba, Ginger, Sage,
Thyme and Clove against Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhimurium,
Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens and Escherichia coli
were investigated. Antibacterial activity was performed by agar
diffusion and disc diffusion method. Jatropha, Jojoba, Clove and
Ginger extracts showed notable bacterial activity in the first
screening step then selected to be tested against Bacillus cereus
(Gram+), Staphylococcus aureus (Gram+) and Salmonella
typhimurium (Gram−) and their effect was compared using
antibiotics as control. Screening results showed potential antibacterial
activity of the tested plant extracts against the screened bacterial
strains. It was found that methanol extracts exhibited higher
antibacterial activity than aqueous extracts. Methanol extract of
Jatropha showed the highest inhibition zone against Staphylococcus
aureus (Gram+) with 24.00 mm diameter, compared to the other
plant extracts followed by clove. Meanwhile, the inhibition zones of
methanol extracts of Jojoba and Ginger were the same (12mm).The
Gram-positive bacteria were found to be more sensitive to aqueous
and methanol extracts than Gram-negative bacteria.
Abstract: We propose new multiple-channel piezoelectric (PZT)
actuated tunable optical filter based on racetrack multi-ring
resonators for wavelength de-multiplexing network applications. We
design tunable eight-channel wavelength de-multiplexer consisting of
eight cascaded PZT actuated tunable multi-ring resonator filter with a
channel spacing of 1.6nm. The filter for each channel is basically
structured on a suspended beam, sandwiched with piezoelectric
material and built in integrated ring resonators which are placed on
the middle of the beam to gain uniform stress and linearly varying
longitudinal strain. A reference single mode serially coupled multi
stage racetrack ring resonator with the same radii and coupling length
is designed with a line width of 0.8974nm with a flat top pass band at
1dB of 0.5205nm and free spectral range of about 14.9nm. In each
channel, a small change in the perimeter of the rings is introduced to
establish the shift in resonance wavelength as per the defined channel
spacing. As a result, when a DC voltage is applied, the beams will
elongate, which involves mechanical deformation of the ring
resonators that induces a stress and a strain, which brings a change in
refractive index and perimeter of the rings leading to change in the
output spectrum shift providing the tunability of central wavelength
in each channel. Simultaneous wave length shift as high as
45.54pm/
Abstract: Many industrial materials like magnets need to be
tested for the radiation environment expected at linear colliders (LC)
where the accelerator and detectors will be subjected to large
influences of beta, neutron and gamma’s over their life Gamma
irradiation of the permanent sample magnets using a 60Co source was
investigated up to an absorbed dose of 700Mrad shows a negligible
effect on some magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B. In this work it has
been tried to investigate the change of some important properties of
Barium hexa ferrite. Results showed little decreases of magnetic
properties at doses rang of 0.5 to 2.5 Mrad. But at the gamma
irradiation dose up to 10 Mrad it is showed a few increase of
properties. Also study of gamma irradiation of Nd-Fe-B showed
considerably increase of magnetic properties.
Abstract: The arsenic and iron environments in different growth
stages have been studied with EXAFS and XANES using
Brookhaven Synchrotron Light Source. Collard Greens plants were
grown and tissue samples were harvested. The project studied the
EXAFS and XANES of tissue samples using As and Fe K-edges. The
Fe absorption and the Fourier transform bond length information
were used as a control comparison. The Fourier transform of the
XAFS data revealed the coexistence of As (III) and As (V) in the As
bonding environment inside the studied plant tissue samples,
although the soil only had As (III). The data suggests that Collard
Greens has a novel pathway to handle arsenic absorption in soil.
Abstract: The objectives of this study are to study Chinese
tourist’s Behaviors towards travel and shopping in Bangkok. The
research methodology was a quantitative research. The sample of this
research was 400 Chinese tourists in Bangkok chosen by the
accidental sampling and the purposive sampling. Inferential Statistics
Analysis by using the Chi-square statistics. As for the results of this
study the researcher found that differences between personal, social
and cultural information, i.e., gender, age, place of residence,
educational level, occupation, income, family, and main objectives of
tourism with behaviors of Chinese tourists in Bangkok towards travel
and shopping in Bangkok.
Abstract: Margin-Based Principle has been proposed for a long
time, it has been proved that this principle could reduce the
structural risk and improve the performance in both theoretical
and practical aspects. Meanwhile, feed-forward neural network is
a traditional classifier, which is very hot at present with a deeper
architecture. However, the training algorithm of feed-forward neural
network is developed and generated from Widrow-Hoff Principle that
means to minimize the squared error. In this paper, we propose
a new training algorithm for feed-forward neural networks based
on Margin-Based Principle, which could effectively promote the
accuracy and generalization ability of neural network classifiers
with less labelled samples and flexible network. We have conducted
experiments on four UCI open datasets and achieved good results
as expected. In conclusion, our model could handle more sparse
labelled and more high-dimension dataset in a high accuracy while
modification from old ANN method to our method is easy and almost
free of work.
Abstract: Kidney cancer is the most lethal urological cancer
accounting for 3% of adult malignancies. VHL, a tumor-suppressor
gene, is best known to be associated with renal cell carcinoma
(RCC). The VHL functions as negative regulator of hypoxia inducible
factors. Recent sequencing efforts have identified several novel
frequent mutations of histone modifying and chromatin remodeling
genes in ccRCC (clear cell RCC) including PBRM1 and SETD2. The
PBRM1 gene encodes the BAF180 protein, which involved in
transcriptional activation and repression of selected genes. SETD2
encodes a histone methyltransferase, which may play a role in
suppressing tumor development. In this study, RNAs of 30 paired
tumor and normal samples that were grouped according to the types
of kidney cancer and clinical characteristics of patients, including
gender and average age were examined by RT-PCR, SSCP and
sequencing techniques. VHL, PBRM1 and SETD2 expressions were
relatively down-regulated. However, statistically no significance was
found (Wilcoxon signed rank test, p>0.05). Interestingly, no mutation
was observed on the contrary of previous studies. Understanding the
molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of RCC has
aided the development of molecular-targeted drugs for kidney cancer.
Further analysis is required to identify the responsible genes rather
than VHL, PBRM1 and SETD2 in kidney cancer.
Abstract: The changes of the optical and structural properties of
Bismuth-Boro-Tellurite glasses pre and post gamma irradiation were
studied. Six glass samples, with different composition [(TeO2)0.7
(B2O3)0.3]1-x (Bi2O3)x prepared by melt quenching method were
irradiated with 25kGy gamma radiation at room temperature. The
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to explore
the structural bonding in the prepared glass samples due to exposure,
while UV-VIS Spectrophotometer was used to evaluate the changes
in the optical properties before and after irradiation. Gamma
irradiation causes profound changes in the peak intensity as shown by
FTIR spectra which is due to the breaking of the network bonding.
Before gamma irradiation, the optical band gap, Eg value decreased
from 2.44 eV to 2.15 eV with the addition of Bismuth content. The
value kept decreasing (from 2.18 eV to 2.00 eV) following exposure
to gamma radiation due to the increase of non-bridging oxygen
(NBO) and the increase of defect in the glass. In conclusion, the glass
with high content of Bi2O3 (0.30Bi) give smallest Eg and show less
changes in FTIR spectra after gamma irradiation which indicate that
this glass is more resistant to gamma radiation compared to other
glasses.
Abstract: The problems arising from unbalanced data sets
generally appear in real world applications. Due to unequal class
distribution, many researchers have found that the performance of
existing classifiers tends to be biased towards the majority class. The
k-nearest neighbors’ nonparametric discriminant analysis is a method
that was proposed for classifying unbalanced classes with good
performance. In this study, the methods of discriminant analysis are
of interest in investigating misclassification error rates for classimbalanced
data of three diabetes risk groups. The purpose of this
study was to compare the classification performance between
parametric discriminant analysis and nonparametric discriminant
analysis in a three-class classification of class-imbalanced data of
diabetes risk groups. Data from a project maintaining healthy
conditions for 599 employees of a government hospital in Bangkok
were obtained for the classification problem. The employees were
divided into three diabetes risk groups: non-risk (90%), risk (5%),
and diabetic (5%). The original data including the variables of
diabetes risk group, age, gender, blood glucose, and BMI were
analyzed and bootstrapped for 50 and 100 samples, 599 observations
per sample, for additional estimation of the misclassification error
rate. Each data set was explored for the departure of multivariate
normality and the equality of covariance matrices of the three risk
groups. Both the original data and the bootstrap samples showed nonnormality
and unequal covariance matrices. The parametric linear
discriminant function, quadratic discriminant function, and the
nonparametric k-nearest neighbors’ discriminant function were
performed over 50 and 100 bootstrap samples and applied to the
original data. Searching the optimal classification rule, the choices of
prior probabilities were set up for both equal proportions (0.33: 0.33:
0.33) and unequal proportions of (0.90:0.05:0.05), (0.80: 0.10: 0.10)
and (0.70, 0.15, 0.15). The results from 50 and 100 bootstrap samples
indicated that the k-nearest neighbors approach when k=3 or k=4 and
the defined prior probabilities of non-risk: risk: diabetic as 0.90:
0.05:0.05 or 0.80:0.10:0.10 gave the smallest error rate of
misclassification. The k-nearest neighbors approach would be
suggested for classifying a three-class-imbalanced data of diabetes
risk groups.
