Abstract: Icons, or pictorial and graphical objects, are
commonly used in human-computer interaction (HCI) fields as the
mediator in order to communicate information to users. Yet there has
been little studies focusing on a majority of the world’s population –
semi-literate communities – in terms of the fundamental knowhow
for designing icons for such population. In this study, two sets of
icons belonging in different icon taxonomy – abstract and concrete –
are designed for a mobile application for semi-literate agricultural
communities. In this paper, we propose a triadic relationship of an
icon, namely meaning, task and mental image, which inherits the
triadic relationship of a sign. User testing with the application and a
post-pilot questionnaire are conducted as the experimental approach
in two rural villages in India. Icons belonging to concrete taxonomy
perform better than abstract icons on the premise that the design of
the icon fulfills the underlying rules of the proposed triadic
relationship.
Abstract: Crosstalk among interconnects and printed-circuit
board (PCB) traces is a major limiting factor of signal quality in highspeed
digital and communication equipments especially when fast
data buses are involved. Such a bus is considered as a planar
multiconductor transmission line. This paper will demonstrate how
the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method provides an exact
solution of the transmission-line equations to analyze the near end
and the far end crosstalk. In addition, this study makes it possible to
analyze the rise time effect on the near and far end voltages of the
victim conductor. The paper also discusses a statistical analysis,
based upon a set of several simulations. Such analysis leads to a
better understanding of the phenomenon and yields useful
information.

Abstract: Coal fly ash is formed as a solid waste product from
the combustion of coal in coal fired power stations. Huge amounts of
fly ash are produced globally every year and are predicted to
increase. Nowadays, less than half of the fly ash is used as a raw
material for cement manufacturing, construction and the rest of it is
disposed as a waste causing yet another environmental concern. For
this reason, the recycling of this kind of slurries into useful materials
is quite important in terms of economical and environmental aspects.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Orhaneli and
Tuncbilek coal fly ashes for utilization in some industrial
applications. Therefore the mineralogical and chemical compositions
of these fly ashes were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy,
ourier-transform infrared spectrometer, and X-ray diffraction. The
silicon (Si) and aluminum (Al) in the fly ashes were activated by
alkali fusion technique with sodium hydroxide. The obtained extracts
were analyzed for Si and Al content by inductively coupled plasma
optical emission spectrometry.
Abstract: Early diagnosis of infection like Hep-B virus in blood
is important for low cost medical treatment. For this purpose, it is
desirable to develop a point of care device which should be able to
detect trace quantities of the target molecule in blood. In this paper,
we report a nanoporous silicon oxide sensor which is capable of
detecting down to 1fM concentration of Hep-B surface antigen in
blood without the requirement of any centrifuge or pre-concentration.
This has been made possible by the presence of resonant peak in the
sensitivity characteristics. This peak is observed to be dependent only
on the concentration of the specific antigen and not on the interfering
species in blood serum. The occurrence of opposite impedance
change within the pores and at the bottom of the pore is responsible
for this effect. An electronic interface has also been designed to
provide a display of the virus concentration.
Abstract: This paper presents the design and fabrication of an
optical window for an optical modulator toward image sensing
applications. An optical window consists of micrometer-order SiO2
capillaries (porous solid) that can modulate transmission light
intensity by moving the liquid in and out of porous solid. A high
optical transmittance of the optical window can be achieved due to
refractive index matching when the liquid is penetrated into the
porous solid. Otherwise, its light transmittance is lower because of
light reflection and scattering by air holes and capillary walls. Silicon
capillaries fabricated by deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) process are
completely oxidized to form the SiO2 capillaries. Therefore, high
aspect ratio SiO2 capillaries can be achieved based on silicon
capillaries formed by DRIE technique. Large compressive stress of
the oxide causes bending of the capillary structure, which is reduced
by optimizing the design of device structure. The large stress of the
optical window can be released via thin supporting beams. A 7.2 mm
x 9.6 mm optical window area toward a fully integrated with the
image sensor format is successfully fabricated and its optical
transmittance is evaluated with and without inserting liquids (ethanol
and matching oil). The achieved modulation range is approximately
20% to 35% with and without liquid penetration in visible region
(wavelength range from 450 nm to 650 nm).
Abstract: The capability of exploiting the electronic charge and
spin properties simultaneously in a single material has made diluted
magnetic semiconductors (DMS) remarkable in the field of
spintronics. We report the designing of DMS based on zinc-blend
ZnO doped with Cr impurity. The full potential linearized augmented
plane wave plus local orbital FP-L(APW+lo) method in density
functional theory (DFT) has been adapted to carry out these
investigations. For treatment of exchange and correlation energy,
generalized gradient approximations have been used. Introducing Cr
atoms in the matrix of ZnO has induced strong magnetic moment
with ferromagnetic ordering at stable ground state. Cr:ZnO was found
to favor the short range magnetic interaction that
reflect tendency of Cr clustering. The electronic structure of ZnO is
strongly influenced in the presence of Cr impurity atoms where
impurity bands appear in the band gap.
Abstract: Phelipanche ramosa is the most damaging obligate
flowering parasitic weed on wide species of cultivated plants. The
semi-arid regions of the world are considered the main centers of this
parasitic plant that causes heavy infestation. This is due to its
production of high numbers of seeds (up to 200,000) that remain
viable for extended periods (up to 20 years). In this study, 13
treatments for the control of Phelipanche were carried out, which
included agronomic, chemical, and biological treatments and the use
of resistant plant methods. In 2014, a trial was performed at the
Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment, University of
Foggia (southern Italy), on processing tomato (cv ‘Docet’) grown in
pots filled with soil taken from a field that was heavily infested by P.
ramosa). The tomato seedlings were transplanted on May 8, 2014,
into a sandy-clay soil (USDA). A randomized block design with 3
replicates (pots) was adopted. During the growing cycle of the
tomato, at 70, 75, 81 and 88 days after transplantation, the number of
P. ramosa shoots emerged in each pot was determined. The tomato
fruit were harvested on August 8, 2014, and the quantitative and
qualitative parameters were determined. All of the data were
subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) using the JMP software
(SAS Institute Inc. Cary, NC, USA), and for comparisons of means
(Tukey's tests). The data show that each treatment studied did not
provide complete control against P. ramosa. However, the virulence
of the attacks was mitigated by some of the treatments tried: radicon
biostimulant, compost activated with Fusarium, mineral fertilizer
nitrogen, sulfur, enzone, and the resistant tomato genotype. It is
assumed that these effects can be improved by combining some of
these treatments with each other, especially for a gradual and
continuing reduction of the “seed bank” of the parasite in the soil.
Abstract: Using the first-principles full-potential linearized
augmented plane wave plus local orbital (FP-LAPW+lo) method
based on density functional theory (DFT), we have investigated the
electronic structure and magnetism of full Heusler alloys Co2ZrGe
and Co2NbB. These compounds are predicted to be half-metallic
ferromagnets (HMFs) with a total magnetic moment of 2.000 B per
formula unit, well consistent with the Slater-Pauling rule.
Calculations show that both the alloys have an indirect band gaps, in
the minority-spin channel of density of states (DOS), with values of
0.58 eV and 0.47 eV for Co2ZrGe and Co2NbB, respectively.
Analysis of the DOS and magnetic moments indicates that their
magnetism is mainly related to the d-d hybridization between the Co
and Zr (or Nb) atoms. The half-metallicity is found to be relatively
robust against volume changes. In addition, an atom inside molecule
AIM formalism and an electron localization function ELF were also
adopted to study the bonding properties of these compounds, building
a bridge between their electronic and bonding behavior.
As they have a good crystallographic compatibility with the lattice of
semiconductors used industrially and negative calculated cohesive
energies with considerable absolute values these two alloys could be
promising magnetic materials in the spintronic field.
Abstract: The Al-MoO3-P-CdTe-Al MOS sandwich structures
were fabricated by vacuum deposition method on cleaned glass
substrates. Capacitance versus voltage measurements were performed
at different frequencies and sweep rates of applied voltages for oxide
and semiconductor films of different thicknesses. In the negative
voltage region of the C-V curve a high differential capacitance of the
semiconductor was observed and at high frequencies (
Abstract: This paper presents circuit models to analyze the
conducted susceptibility of multiconductor shielded cables in
frequency domains using Branin’s method, which is referred to as the
method of characteristics. These models, which can be used directly
in the time and frequency domains, take into account the presence of
both the transfer impedance and admittance. The conducted
susceptibility is studied by using an injection current on the cable
shield as the source. Two examples are studied; a coaxial shielded
cable and shielded cables with two parallel wires (i.e., twinax cables).
This shield has an asymmetry (one slot on the side). Results obtained
by these models are in good agreement with those obtained by other
methods.
Abstract: Semiconductor crystals smaller than about 10 nm,
known as quantum dots, have properties that differ from large
samples, including a band gap that becomes larger for smaller
particles. These properties create several applications for quantum
dots. In this paper new shapes of quantum dot arrays are used to
enhance the photo physical properties of gold nano-particles. This
paper presents a study of the effect of nano-particles shape, array, and
size on their absorption characteristics.
Abstract: Since the initial creation of the Barbie doll in 1959, it
became a symbol of US society. Likewise, the Licca-chan, a Japanese
doll created in 1967, also became a Japanese symbolic doll of Japanese
society. Prior to the introduction of Licca-chan, Barbie was already
marketed in Japan but their sales were dismal. Licca-chan (an actual
name: Kayama Licca) is a plastic doll with a variety of sizes ranging
from 21.0 cm to 29.0 cm which many Japanese girls dream of having.
For over 35 years, the manufacturer, Takara Co., Ltd. has sold over 48
million dolls and has produced doll houses, accessories, clothes, and
Licca-chan video games for the Nintendo DS. Many First-generation
Licca-chan consumers still are enamored with Licca-chan, and go to
Licca-chan House, in an amusement park with their daughters. These
people are called Licca-chan maniacs, as they enjoy touring the
Licca-chan’s factory in Tohoku or purchase various Licca-chan
accessories. After the successful launch of Licca-chan into the
Japanese market, a mixed-like doll from the US and Japan, a doll,
JeNny, was later sold in the same Japanese market by Takara Co., Ltd.
in 1982.
Comparison of these cultural iconic dolls, Barbie and Licca-chan,
are analyzed in this paper. In fact, these dolls have concepts of girls’
dreams. By using concepts of mythology of Jean Baudrillard, these
dolls can be represented idealized images of figures in the products for
consumers, but at the same time, consumers can see products with
different perspectives, which can cause controversy.
Abstract: Due to the rapid increase of Internet, web opinion
sources dynamically emerge which is useful for both potential
customers and product manufacturers for prediction and decision
purposes. These are the user generated contents written in natural
languages and are unstructured-free-texts scheme. Therefore, opinion
mining techniques become popular to automatically process customer
reviews for extracting product features and user opinions expressed
over them. Since customer reviews may contain both opinionated and
factual sentences, a supervised machine learning technique applies
for subjectivity classification to improve the mining performance. In
this paper, we dedicate our work is the task of opinion
summarization. Therefore, product feature and opinion extraction is
critical to opinion summarization, because its effectiveness
significantly affects the identification of semantic relationships. The
polarity and numeric score of all the features are determined by
Senti-WordNet Lexicon. The problem of opinion summarization
refers how to relate the opinion words with respect to a certain
feature. Probabilistic based model of supervised learning will
improve the result that is more flexible and effective.
Abstract: Since “Hello Kitty” was manufactured in the market in
1974, the manufacturer, Sanrio Co., Ltd. gains high profits not only
Kitty’s products but also Kitty license, which gives us a picture of
Sanrio’s sales strategy in the global market. Kitty’s history, its
products, and Sanrio’s sales strategy are researched in this paper.
Comparing it to American Girl, and focusing on KITTYLAB, a type of
attraction where you can enjoy games with Kitty, and choose its parts
to build your own Kitty, the image of the cultural icon can be altered.
Abstract: The wear measuring and wear modelling are
fundamental issues in the industrial field, mainly correlated to the
economy and safety. Therefore, there is a need to study the wear
measurements and wear estimation. Pin-on-disc test is the most
common test which is used to study the wear behaviour. In this paper,
the pin-on-disc (AEROTECH UNIDEX 11) is used for the
investigation of the effects of normal load and hardness of material on
the wear under dry and sliding conditions. In the pin-on-disc rig, two
specimens were used; one, a pin is made of steel with a tip, positioned
perpendicular to the disc, where the disc is made of aluminium. The
pin wear and disc wear were measured by using the following
instruments: The Talysurf instrument, a digital microscope, and the
alicona instrument. The Talysurf profilometer was used to measure
the pin/disc wear scar depth, digital microscope was used to measure
the diameter and width of wear scar, and the alicona was used to
measure the pin wear and disc wear. After that, the Archard model,
American Society for Testing and Materials model (ASTM), and
neural network model were used for pin/disc wear modelling.
Simulation results were implemented by using the Matlab program.
This paper focuses on how the alicona can be used for wear
measurements and how the neural network can be used for wear
estimation.
Abstract: Waste silicon carbide (waste SiC) filled high-density
polyethylene (HDPE) with and without surface modifiers were
studied. Two types of surface modifiers namely; high-density
polyethylene-grafted-maleic anhydride (HDPE-g-MA) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane have been used in this study. The
composites were produced using a two roll mill, extruder and shaped
in a hydraulic compression molding machine. The mechanical
properties of polymer composites such as flexural strength and
modulus, impact strength, tensile strength, stiffness and hardness
were investigated over a range of compositions. It was found that,
flexural strength and modulus, tensile modulus and hardness
increased, whereas impact strength and tensile strength decreased
with the increasing in filler contents, compared to the neat HDPE. At
similar filler content, the effect of both surface modifiers increased
flexural modulus, impact strength, tensile strength and stiffness but
reduced the flexural strength. Morphological investigation using
SEM revealed that the improvement in mechanical properties was
due to enhancement of the interfacial adhesion between waste SiC
and HDPE.
Abstract: In this paper, the improvement by deconvolution of
the depth resolution in Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS)
analysis is considered. Indeed, we have developed a new Tikhonov-
Miller deconvolution algorithm where a priori model of the solution
is included. This is a denoisy and pre-deconvoluted signal obtained
from: firstly, by the application of wavelet shrinkage algorithm,
secondly by the introduction of the obtained denoisy signal in an
iterative deconvolution algorithm. In particular, we have focused the
light on the effect of the iterations number on the evolution of the
deconvoluted signals. The SIMS profiles are multilayers of Boron in
Silicon matrix.
Abstract: Compositions of different molar ratios of
polymethylmethacrylate-co-methacrylic acid (PMMA-co-MAA)
were synthesized via free-radical polymerization. Polymer coated
surfaces have been produced on silicon wafers. Coated samples were
analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results have shown
that the roughness of the surfaces have increased by increasing the
molar ratio of monomer methacrylic acid (MAA). This study reveals
that the gradual increase in surface roughness is due to the fact that
carboxylic functional groups have been generated by MAA segments.
Such surfaces can be desirable platforms for fabrication of the
biosensors for detection of the viruses and diseases.
Abstract: The contact resistance between source/drain electrodes
and semiconductor layer is an important parameter affecting electron
transporting performance in the thin film transistor (TFT). In this
work, we introduced a transparent and the solution prossable
single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/Al-doped ZnO nano particle
(AZO NP) bilayer electrodes showing low contact resistance with
indium-oxide (In2O3) sol gel thin film. By inserting low work function
AZO NPs into the interface between the SWCNTs and the In2O3 which
has a high energy barrier, we could obtain an electrical Ohmic contact
between them. Finally, with the SWCNT-AZO NP bilayer electrodes,
we successfully fabricated a TFT showing a field effect mobility of
5.38 cm2/V·s at 250°C.
