Abstract: This paper discusses the value theory in cultural
heritage and the value theory in environmental economics. Two
economic views of the value theory are compared, within the field of
cultural heritage maintenance and within the field of the environment.
The main aims are to find common features in these two differently
structured theories under the layer of differently defined terms as well
as really differing features of these two approaches; to clear the
confusion which stems from different terminology as in fact these
terms capture the same aspects of reality; and to show possible
inspiration these two perspectives can offer one another. Another aim
is to present these two value systems in one value framework. First,
important moments of the value theory from the economic
perspective are presented, leading to the marginal revolution of (not
only) the Austrian School. Then the theory of value within cultural
heritage and environmental economics are explored. Finally,
individual approaches are compared and their potential mutual
inspiration searched for.
Abstract: This exploratory study gives an overview of the
evolution of the main financial and performance indicators of the
Academic Spin-Off’s and High Growth Academic Spin-Off’s in year
3 and year 6 after its creation in the region of Catalonia in Spain. The
study compares and evaluates results of these different measures of
performance and the degree of success of these companies for each
University.
We found that the average Catalonian Academic Spin-Off is small
and have not achieved the sustainability stage at year 6. On the
contrary, a small group of High Growth Academic Spin-Off’s
exhibits robust performance with high profits in year 6. Our results
support the need to increase selectivity and support for these
companies especially near year 3, because are the ones that will bring
wealth and employment. University role as an investor has rigid
norms and habits that impede an efficient economic return from their
ASO investment.
Universities with high performance on sales and employment in
year 3 not always could sustain this growth in year 6 because their
ASO’s are not profitable. On the contrary, profitable ASO exhibit
superior performance in all measurement indicators in year 6. We
advocate the need of a balanced growth (with profits) as a way to
obtain subsequent continuous growth.
Abstract: In this paper, the problem of steady laminar boundary
layer flow and heat transfer over a permeable exponentially
stretching/shrinking sheet with generalized slip velocity is
considered. The similarity transformations are used to transform the
governing nonlinear partial differential equations to a system of
nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The transformed equations
are then solved numerically using the bvp4c function in MATLAB.
Dual solutions are found for a certain range of the suction and
stretching/shrinking parameters. The effects of the suction parameter,
stretching/shrinking parameter, velocity slip parameter, critical shear
rate and Prandtl number on the skin friction and heat transfer
coefficients as well as the velocity and temperature profiles are
presented and discussed.
Abstract: A model was constructed to predict the amount of
solar radiation that will make contact with the surface of the earth in
a given location an hour into the future. This project was supported
by the Southern Company to determine at what specific times during
a given day of the year solar panels could be relied upon to produce
energy in sufficient quantities. Due to their ability as universal
function approximators, an artificial neural network was used to
estimate the nonlinear pattern of solar radiation, which utilized
measurements of weather conditions collected at the Griffin, Georgia
weather station as inputs. A number of network configurations and
training strategies were utilized, though a multilayer perceptron with
a variety of hidden nodes trained with the resilient propagation
algorithm consistently yielded the most accurate predictions. In
addition, a modeled direct normal irradiance field and adjacent
weather station data were used to bolster prediction accuracy. In later
trials, the solar radiation field was preprocessed with a discrete
wavelet transform with the aim of removing noise from the
measurements. The current model provides predictions of solar
radiation with a mean square error of 0.0042, though ongoing efforts
are being made to further improve the model’s accuracy.
Abstract: In this paper, a direct power control (DPC)
strategies have been investigated in order to control a high
power AC/DC converter with time variable load. This converter
is composed of a three level three phase neutral point clamped
(NPC) converter as rectifier and an H-bridge four quadrant
current control converter. In the high power application,
controller not only must adjust the desire outputs but also
decrease the level of distortions which are injected to the network
from the converter. Regarding to this reason and nonlinearity
of the power electronic converter, the conventional controllers
cannot achieve appropriate responses. In this research, the
precise mathematical analysis has been employed to design the
appropriate controller in order to control the time variable
load. A DPC controller has been proposed and simulated using
Matlab/ Simulink. In order to verify the simulation result, a real
time simulator- OPAL-RT- has been employed. In this paper,
the dynamic response and stability of the high power NPC
with variable load has been investigated and compared with
conventional types using a real time simulator. The results proved
that the DPC controller is more stable and has more precise
outputs in comparison with conventional controller.
Abstract: Rural tourism is usually associated with rural
development because it has strong linkages to rural resources; but it
remains underdeveloped compared to urban tourism. This
underdevelopment of rural tourism serves as a motivation for this
study whose aim is to examine the factors affecting the perceived
satisfaction of rural tourists. The objectives of this study are: to
identify and design theories and models on rural tourism satisfaction,
and to empirically validate these models and theories through a
survey of tourists from the Malealea Lodge which is located in the
Mafeteng District, in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Data
generated by the collection of questionnaires used by this survey was
analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics and correlations in
SPSS after checking the validity and the reliability of the
questionnaire. The main hypothesis behind this study is the
relationship between the demographics of rural tourists, their
motivation, and their satisfaction, as supported by existing literature;
except that motivation is measured in this study according to three
dimensions: push factors, pull factors, and perceived usefulness of
ICTs in the rural tourism experience. Findings from this study
indicate that among the demographics factors, continent of origin and
marital status influence the satisfaction of rural tourists; and their
occupation affects their perceptions on the use of ICTs in rural
tourism. Moreover, only pull factors were found to influence the
satisfaction of rural tourists.
Abstract: The arm length, hand length, hand breadth and middle
finger length of 1540 right-handed industrial workers of Haryana
state was used to assess the relationship between the upper limb
dimensions and stature. Initially, the data were analyzed using basic
univariate analysis and independent t-tests; then simple and multiple
linear regression models were used to estimate stature using SPSS
(version 17). There was a positive correlation between upper limb
measurements (hand length, hand breadth, arm length and middle
finger length) and stature (p < 0.01), which was highest for hand
length. The accuracy of stature prediction ranged from ± 54.897 mm
to ± 58.307 mm. The use of multiple regression equations gave better
results than simple regression equations. This study provides new
forensic standards for stature estimation from the upper limb
measurements of male industrial workers of Haryana (India). The
results of this research indicate that stature can be determined using
hand dimensions with accuracy, when only upper limb is available
due to any reasons likewise explosions, train/plane crashes, mutilated
bodies, etc. The regression formula derived in this study will be
useful for anatomists, archaeologists, anthropologists, design
engineers and forensic scientists for fairly prediction of stature using
regression equations.
Abstract: This study analyzes the innovative orientation of the
Croatian entrepreneurs. Innovative orientation is represented by the
perceived extent to which an entrepreneur’s product or service or
technology is new, and no other businesses offer the same product.
The sample is extracted from the GEM Croatia Adult Population
Survey dataset for the years 2003-2013. We apply descriptive
statistics, t-test, Chi-square test and logistic regression. Findings
indicate that innovative orientations vary with personal, firm, meso
and macro level variables, and between different stages in
entrepreneurship process. Significant predictors are occupation of the
entrepreneurs, size of the firm and export aspiration for both early
stage and established entrepreneurs. In addition, fear of failure,
expecting to start a new business and seeing an entrepreneurial career
as a desirable choice are predictors of innovative orientation among
early stage entrepreneurs.
Abstract: Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have wide variety
of applications and provide limitless future potentials. Nodes in
WSNs are prone to failure due to energy depletion, hardware failure,
communication link errors, malicious attacks, and so on. Therefore,
fault tolerance is one of the critical issues in WSNs. We study how
fault tolerance is addressed in different applications of WSNs. Fault
tolerant routing is a critical task for sensor networks operating in
dynamic environments. Many routing, power management, and data
dissemination protocols have been specifically designed for WSNs
where energy awareness is an essential design issue. The focus,
however, has been given to the routing protocols which might differ
depending on the application and network architecture.
Abstract: Flash Floods, together with landslides, are a common
natural threat for people living in mountainous regions and foothills.
One way to deal with this constant menace is the use of Early
Warning Systems, which have become a very important mitigation
strategy for natural disasters.
In this work we present our proposal for a pilot Flash Flood Early
Warning System for Santiago, Chile, the first stage of a more
ambitious project that in a future stage shall also include early
warning of landslides.
To give a context for our approach, we first analyze three existing
Flash Flood Early Warning Systems, focusing on their general
architectures. We then present our proposed system, with main focus
on the decision support system, a system that integrates empirical
models and fuzzy expert systems to achieve reliable risk estimations.
Abstract: In this paper we propose a discrete tracking control of
nonholonomic mobile robots with two degrees of freedom. The
electromechanical model of a mobile robot moving on a horizontal
surface without slipping, with two rear wheels controlled by two
independent DC electric, and one front roal wheel is considered. We
present backstepping design based on the Euler approximate discretetime
model of a continuous-time plant. Theoretical considerations are
verified by numerical simulation.
Abstract: An innovative concept called “Flexy-Energy” is developing at 2iE. This concept aims to produce electricity at lower cost by smartly mix different available energy sources in accordance to the load profile of the region. With a higher solar irradiation and due to the fact that Diesel generator are massively used in sub-Saharan rural areas, PV/Diesel hybrid systems could be a good application of this concept and a good solution to electrify this region, provided they are reliable, cost effective and economically attractive to investors. Presentation of the developed approach is the aims of this paper. The PV/Diesel hybrid system designed consists to produce electricity and/or heat from a coupling between Diesel Diesel generators and PV panels without batteries storage, while ensuring the substitution of gasoil by bio-fuels available in the area where the system will be installed. The optimal design of this system is based on his technical performances; the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) and Levelized Cost of Energy are developed and use as economic criteria. The Net Present Value (NPV), the internal rate of return (IRR) and the discounted payback (DPB) are also evaluated according to dual electricity pricing (in sunny and unsunny hours). The PV/Diesel hybrid system obtained is compared to the standalone Diesel Diesel generators. The approach carried out in this paper has been applied to Siby village in Mali (Latitude 12 ° 23'N 8 ° 20'W) with 295 kWh as daily demand. This approach provides optimal physical characteristics (size of the components, number of component) and dynamical characteristics in real time (number of Diesel generator on, their load rate, fuel specific consumptions, and PV penetration rate) of the system. The system obtained is slightly cost effective; but could be improved with optimized tariffing strategies.
Abstract: The main goal of this article is to describe the online
flood monitoring and prediction system Floreon+ primarily developed
for the Moravian-Silesian region in the Czech Republic and the basic
process it uses for running automatic rainfall-runoff and
hydrodynamic simulations along with their calibration and
uncertainty modeling. It takes a long time to execute such process
sequentially, which is not acceptable in the online scenario, so the use
of a high performance computing environment is proposed for all
parts of the process to shorten their duration. Finally, a case study on
the Ostravice River catchment is presented that shows actual
durations and their gain from the parallel implementation.
Abstract: In recent years parasitic antenna play major role in
MIMO systems because of their gain and spectral efficiency. In this
paper, single RF chain MIMO transmitter is designed using
reconfigurable parasitic antenna. The Spatial Modulation (SM) is a
recently proposed scheme in MIMO scenario which activates only
one antenna at a time. The SM entirely avoids ICI and IAS, and only
requires a single RF chain at the transmitter. This would switch ON a
single transmit-antenna for data transmission while all the other
antennas are kept silent. The purpose of the parasitic elements is to
change the radiation pattern of the radio waves which is emitted from
the driven element and directing them in one direction and hence
introduces transmit diversity. Diode is connect between the patch and
ground by changing its state (ON and OFF) the parasitic element act
as reflector and director and also capable of steering azimuth and
elevation angle. This can be achieved by changing the input
impedance of each parasitic element through single RF chain. The
switching of diode would select the single parasitic antenna for
spatial modulation. This antenna is expected to achieve maximum
gain with desired efficiency.
Abstract: Nature is the immense gifted source for solving
complex problems. It always helps to find the optimal solution to
solve the problem. Mobile Ad Hoc NETwork (MANET) is a wide
research area of networks which has set of independent nodes. The
characteristics involved in MANET’s are Dynamic, does not depend
on any fixed infrastructure or centralized networks, High mobility.
The Bio-Inspired algorithms are mimics the nature for solving
optimization problems opening a new era in MANET. The typical
Swarm Intelligence (SI) algorithms are Ant Colony Optimization
(ACO), Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), Particle Swarm Optimization
(PSO), Modified Termite Algorithm, Bat Algorithm (BA), Wolf
Search Algorithm (WSA) and so on. This work mainly concentrated
on nature of MANET and behavior of nodes. Also it analyses various
performance metrics such as throughput, QoS and End-to-End delay
etc.
Abstract: This paper shortly describes various types of biomass
and a growing number of facilities utilizing the biomass in the Czech
Republic. The considerable part of this paper deals with energy
parameters of the most frequently used types of biomass and results
of their gasification testing. Sixteen most used "Czech" woody plants
and grasses were selected; raw, element and biochemical analyses
were performed and basic calorimetric values, ash composition, and
ash characteristic temperatures were identified. Later, each biofuel
was tested in a fluidized bed gasifier. The essential part of this paper
provides results of the gasification of selected biomass types.
Operating conditions are described in detail with a focus on
individual fuels properties. Gas composition and impurities content
are also identified. In terms of operating conditions and gas quality,
the essential difference occurred mainly between woody plants and
grasses. The woody plants were evaluated as more suitable fuels for
fluidized bed gasifiers. Testing results significantly help with a
decision-making process regarding suitability of energy plants for
growing and with a selection of optimal biomass-treatment
technology.
Abstract: The work allowed gaining knowledge about redox and
speciation changes of As, Cr and Sb ionic forms in Klodnica River
water. This kind of studies never has been conducted in this region of
Poland. In study optimized and validated previously HPLC-ICP-MS
methods for determination of As, Sb and Cr was used. Separation
step was done using high-performance liquid chromatograph
equipped with ion-exchange column followed by ICP-MS
spectrometer detector. Preliminary studies included determination of
the total concentration of As, Sb and Cr, pH, Eh, temperature and
conductivity of the water samples. The study was conducted monthly
from March to August 2014, at six points on the Klodnica River. The
results indicate that exceeded at acceptable concentration of total Cr
and Sb was observed in Klodnica River and we should qualify
Klodnica River waters below the second purity class. In Klodnica
River waters dominates oxidized antimony and arsenic forms, as well
as the two forms of chromium Cr(VI) and Cr(III). Studies have also
shown the methyl derivative of arsenic's presence.
Abstract: Morphological interaction of porcine cumulus-oocyte
complexes (pCOCs) was investigated on in vitro condition using
electron microscope (SEM and TEM). The totals of 1,923 oocytes
were round in shape, surrounded by Zona pellucida with layer of
cumulus cells ranging between 59.29-202.14 μm in size. They were
classified into intact-, multi-, partial cumulus cell layer oocyte, and
completely denuded oocyte, at the percentage composition of 22.80%
32.70%, 18.60%, and 25.90 % respectively. The pCOCs classified as
intact- and multi cumulus cell layer oocytes were further culturing at
37°C with 5% CO2, 95% air atmosphere and high humidity for 44 h
in M199 with Earle’s salts supplemented with 10% HTFCS, 2.2
mg/mL NaHCO3, 1 M Hepes, 0.25 mM pyruvate, 15 μg/mL porcine
follicle-stimulating hormone, 1 μg/mL LH, 1μg/mL estradiol with
ethanol, and 50 μg/mL gentamycin sulfate. On electron microscope
study, cumulus cells were found to stick their processes to secrete
substance from the sac-shape end into Zona pellucida of the oocyte
and also communicated with the neighboring cells through their
microvilli on the beginning of incubation period. It is believed that
the cumulus cells communicate with the oocyte by inserting the
microvilli through this gap and embedded in the oocyte cytoplasm
before secreting substance, through the sac-shape end of the
microvilli, to inhibit primary oocyte development at the prophase I.
Morphological changes of the complexes were observed after
culturing for 24-44 h. One hundred percentages of the cumulus layers
were expanded and cumulus cells were peeling off from the oocyte
surface. In addition, the round-shape cumulus cells transformed
themselves into either an elongate shape or a columnar shape, and no
communication between cumulus neighboring cells. After 44 h of
incubation time, diameter of oocytes surrounded by cumulus cells
was larger than 0 h incubation. The effect of hormones in culture
medium is exerted by their receptors present in porcine oocyte. It is
likely that all morphological changes of the complexes after hormone
treatment were to allow maturation of the oocyte. This study
demonstrated that the association of hormones in M199 could
promote porcine follicle activation in 44 h in vitro condition. This
culture system should be useful for studying the regulation of early
follicular growth and development, especially because these follicles represent a large source of oocytes that could be used in vitro for cell
technology.
Abstract: Teaching art by digital means is a big challenge for
the majority of teachers of art and design in primary schools, yet it
allows relationships between art, technology and creativity to be
clearly identified. The aim of this article is to present a modern way
of teaching art, using digital tools in the art classroom to improve
creative ability in pupils aged between nine and eleven years. It also
presents a conceptual model for creativity based on digital art. The
model could be useful for pupils interested in learning to draw by
using an e-drawing package, and for teachers who are interested in
teaching modern digital art in order to improve children’s creativity.
By illustrating the strategy of teaching art through technology, this
model may also help education providers to make suitable choices
about which technological approaches are most effective in
enhancing students’ creative ability, and which digital art tools can
benefit children by developing their technical skills. It is also
expected that use of this model will help to develop skills of social
interaction, which may in turn improve intellectual ability.
Abstract: Machining of hard materials is a recent technology for
direct production of work-pieces. The primary challenge in
machining these materials is selection of cutting tool inserts which
facilitates an extended tool life and high-precision machining of the
component. These materials are widely for making precision parts for
the aerospace industry. Nickel-based alloys are typically used in
extreme environment applications where a combination of strength,
corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance material characteristics
are required. The present paper reports the theoretical and
experimental investigations carried out to understand the influence of
machining parameters on the response parameters. Considering the
basic machining parameters (speed, feed and depth of cut) a study has
been conducted to observe their influence on material removal rate,
surface roughness, cutting forces and corresponding tool wear.
Experiments are designed and conducted with the help of Central
Composite Rotatable Design technique. The results reveals that for a
given range of process parameters, material removal rate is favorable
for higher depths of cut and low feed rate for cutting forces. Low feed
rates and high values of rotational speeds are suitable for better finish
and higher tool life.
