Abstract: In this study, stress distributions on dental implants
made of functionally graded biomaterials (FGBM) are investigated
numerically. The implant body is considered to be subjected to axial
compression loads. Numerical problem is assumed to be 2D, and
ANSYS commercial software is used for the analysis. The cross
section of the implant thread varies as varying the height (H) and the
width (t) of the thread. According to thread dimensions of implant
and material properties of FGBM, equivalent stress distribution on
the implant is determined and presented with contour plots along
with the maximum equivalent stress values. As a result, with
increasing material gradient parameter (n), the equivalent stress
decreases, but the minimum stress distribution increases. Maximum
stress values decrease with decreasing implant radius (r). Maximum
von Mises stresses increases with decreasing H when t is constant.
On the other hand, the stress values are not affected by variation of t
in the case of H = constant.
Abstract: A new fuzzy filter is presented for noise reduction of
images corrupted with additive noise. The filter consists of two
stages. In the first stage, all the pixels of image are processed for
determining noisy pixels. For this, a fuzzy rule based system
associates a degree to each pixel. The degree of a pixel is a real
number in the range [0,1], which denotes a probability that the pixel
is not considered as a noisy pixel. In the second stage, another fuzzy
rule based system is employed. It uses the output of the previous
fuzzy system to perform fuzzy smoothing by weighting the
contributions of neighboring pixel values. Experimental results are
obtained to show the feasibility of the proposed filter. These results
are also compared to other filters by numerical measure and visual
inspection.
Abstract: Large scale climate signals and their teleconnections can influence hydro-meteorological variables on a local scale. Several extreme flow and timing measures, including high flow and low flow measures, from 62 hydrometric stations in Canada are investigated to detect possible linkages with several large scale climate indices. The streamflow data used in this study are derived from the Canadian Reference Hydrometric Basin Network and are characterized by relatively pristine and stable land-use conditions with a minimum of 40 years of record. A composite analysis approach was used to identify linkages between extreme flow and timing measures and climate indices. The approach involves determining the 10 highest and 10 lowest values of various climate indices from the data record. Extreme flow and timing measures for each station were examined for the years associated with the 10 largest values and the years associated with the 10 smallest values. In each case, a re-sampling approach was applied to determine if the 10 values of extreme flow measures differed significantly from the series mean. Results indicate that several stations are impacted by the large scale climate indices considered in this study. The results allow the determination of any relationship between stations that exhibit a statistically significant trend and stations for which the extreme measures exhibit a linkage with the climate indices.
Abstract: Industrial surveys shows that manufacturing
companies define the qualities of thermal removing process based on
the dimension and physical appearance of the cutting material
surface. Therefore, the roughness of the surface area of the material
cut by the plasma arc cutting process and the rate of the removed
material by the manual plasma arc cutting machine was importantly
considered. Plasma arc cutter Selco Genesis 90 was used to cut
Standard AISI 1017 Steel of 200 mm x100 mm x 6 mm manually
based on the selected parameters setting. The material removal rate
(MRR) was measured by determining the weight of the specimens
before and after the cutting process. The surface roughness (SR)
analysis was conducted using Mitutoyo CS-3100 to determine the
average roughness value (Ra). Taguchi method was utilized to
achieve optimum condition for both outputs studied. The
microstructure analysis in the region of the cutting surface is
performed using SEM. The results reveal that the SR values are
inversely proportional to the MRR values. The quality of the surface
roughness depends on the dross peak that occurred after the cutting
process.
Abstract: Researchers investigate arious strategies to develop composite beams and maximize the structural advantages. This study
attempted to conduct experiments and analysis of changes in the
neutral axis of positive moments of a Green Beam. Strain
compatibility analysis was used, and its efficiency was demonstrated
by comparing experimental and analytical values. In the comparison of
neutral axis, the difference between experimental and analytical values
was found to range from 8.8~26.2%. It was determined that strain
compatibility analysis can be useful for predicting the behaviors of
composite beams, with the ability to predict the behavior of not only
the elastic location of the composite member, but also of the plastic
location
Abstract: Face detection and recognition has many applications
in a variety of fields such as security system, videoconferencing and
identification. Face classification is currently implemented in
software. A hardware implementation allows real-time processing,
but has higher cost and time to-market.
The objective of this work is to implement a classifier based on
neural networks MLP (Multi-layer Perceptron) for face detection.
The MLP is used to classify face and non-face patterns. The systm is
described using C language on a P4 (2.4 Ghz) to extract weight
values. Then a Hardware implementation is achieved using VHDL
based Methodology. We target Xilinx FPGA as the implementation
support.
Abstract: A model of a system concerning one species of demersal
(inshore) fish and one of pelagic (offshore) fish undergoing fishing
restricted by marine protected areas is proposed in this paper. This
setup was based on the FISH-BE model applied to the Tabina fishery
in Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines. The components of the model
equations have been adapted from widely-accepted mechanisms in
population dynamics. The model employs Gompertz-s law of growth
and interaction on each type of protected and unprotected subpopulation.
Exchange coefficients between protected and unprotected
areas were assumed to be proportional to the relative area of the
entry region. Fishing harvests were assumed to be proportional to
both the number of fishers and the number of unprotected fish. An
extra term was included for the pelagic population to allow for the
exchange between the unprotected area and the outside environment.
The systems were found to be bounded for all parameter values. The
equations for the steady state were unsolvable analytically but the
existence and uniqueness of non-zero steady states can be proven.
Plots also show that an MPA size yielding the maximum steady state
of the unprotected population can be found. All steady states were
found to be globally asymptotically stable for the entire range of
parameter values.
Abstract: The Detour matrix (DD) of a graph has for its ( i , j)
entry the length of the longest path between vertices i and j. The
DD-eigenvalues of a connected graph G are the eigenvalues for its
detour matrix, and they form the DD-spectrum of G. The DD-energy
EDD of the graph G is the sum of the absolute values of its DDeigenvalues.
Two connected graphs are said to be DD- equienergetic
if they have equal DD-energies. In this paper, the DD- spectra of a
variety of graphs and their DD-energies are calculated.
Abstract: In order to monitor the water table depth on soil profile
salinity buildup, a field study was carried out during 2006-07. Wheat
(Rabi) and Sorghum (Kharif) fodder were sown in with three
treatments. The results showed that watertable depth lowered from
1.15m to 2.89 m depth at the end of experiment. With lower of
watertable depth, pH, ECe and SAR decreased under crops both
without and with gypsum and increased in fallowing. Soil moisture
depletion was directly proportional to lowering of watertable. With the
application of irrigation water (58cm) pH, ECe and SAR were reduced
in cropped plots, reduction was higher in gypsum applied plots than
non-gypsum plots. In case of fallowing, there was increase in pH, EC,
while slight reduction occurred in SAR values. However, soil salinity
showed an increasing upward trend under fallowing and its value in
0-30 cm soil layer was the highest amongst the treatments.
Abstract: An empirical linearly-hyperbolic approximation of the I - V characteristic of a solar cell is presented. This approximation is based on hyperbolic dependence of a current of p-n junctions on voltage for large currents. Such empirical approximation is compared with the early proposed formal linearly-hyperbolic approximation of a solar cell. The expressions defining laws of change of parameters of formal approximation at change of a photo current of family of characteristics are received. It allows simplifying a finding of parameters of approximation on actual curves, to specify their values. Analytical calculation of load regime for linearly - hyperbolic model leads to quadratic equation. Also, this model allows to define soundly a deviation from the maximum power regime and to compare efficiency of regimes of solar cells with different parameters.
Abstract: This paper proposes a method of adaptively generating a gait pattern of biped robot. The gait synthesis is based on human's gait pattern analysis. The proposed method can easily be applied to generate the natural and stable gait pattern of any biped robot. To analyze the human's gait pattern, sequential images of the human's gait on the sagittal plane are acquired from which the gait control values are extracted. The gait pattern of biped robot on the sagittal plane is adaptively generated by a genetic algorithm using the human's gait control values. However, gait trajectories of the biped robot on the sagittal plane are not enough to construct the complete gait pattern because the biped robot moves on 3-dimension space. Therefore, the gait pattern on the frontal plane, generated from Zero Moment Point (ZMP), is added to the gait one acquired on the sagittal plane. Consequently, the natural and stable walking pattern for the biped robot is obtained.
Abstract: Condition monitoring of electrical power equipment
has attracted considerable attention for many years. The aim of this
paper is to use Labview with Fuzzy Logic controller to build a
simulation system to diagnose transformer faults and monitor its
condition. The front panel of the system was designed using
LabVIEW to enable computer to act as customer-designed
instrument. The dissolved gas-in-oil analysis (DGA) method was
used as technique for oil type transformer diagnosis; meanwhile
terminal voltages and currents analysis method was used for dry type
transformer. Fuzzy Logic was used as expert system that assesses all
information keyed in at the front panel to diagnose and predict the
condition of the transformer. The outcome of the Fuzzy Logic
interpretation will be displayed at front panel of LabVIEW to show
the user the conditions of the transformer at any time.
Abstract: The paper considers a single-server queue with fixedsize
batch Poisson arrivals and exponential service times, a model
that is useful for a buffer that accepts messages arriving as fixed size
batches of packets and releases them one packet at time. Transient
performance measures for queues have long been recognized as
being complementary to the steady-state analysis. The focus of the
paper is on the use of the functions that arise in the analysis of the
transient behaviour of the queuing system. The paper exploits
practical modelling to obtain a solution to the integral equation
encountered in the analysis. Results obtained indicate that under
heavy load conditions, there is significant disparity in the statistics
between the transient and steady state values.
Abstract: Fuzzy logic system (FLS) is used in this study to
predict the tractive performance in terms of traction force, and
motion resistance for an intelligent air cushion track vehicle while it
operates in the swamp peat. The system is effective to control the
intelligent air –cushion system with measuring the vehicle traction
force (TF), motion resistance (MR), cushion clearance height (CH)
and cushion pressure (CP). Ultrasonic displacement sensor, pull-in
solenoid electromagnetic switch, pressure control sensor, micro
controller, and battery pH sensor are incorporated with the Fuzzy
logic system to investigate experimentally the TF, MR, CH, and CP.
In this study, a comparison for tractive performance of an intelligent
air cushion track vehicle has been performed with the results obtained
from the predicted values of FLS and experimental actual values. The
mean relative error of actual and predicted values from the FLS
model on traction force, and total motion resistance are found as 5.58
%, and 6.78 % respectively. For all parameters, the relative error of
predicted values are found to be less than the acceptable limits. The
goodness of fit of the prediction values from the FLS model on TF,
and MR are found as 0.90, and 0.98 respectively.
Abstract: In this work the opportunity of construction of the
qualifiers for face-recognition systems based on conjugation criteria
is investigated. The linkage between the bipartite conjugation, the
conjugation with a subspace and the conjugation with the null-space
is shown. The unified solving rule is investigated. It makes the
decision on the rating of face to a class considering the linkage
between conjugation values. The described recognition method can
be successfully applied to the distributed systems of video control
and video observation.
Abstract: Modern civilization has come in recent decades into a new phase in its development, called the information society. The concept of "information society" has become one of the most common. Therefore, the attempt to understand what exactly the society we live in, what are its essential features, and possible future scenarios, is important to the social and philosophical analysis. At the heart of all these deep transformations is more increasing, almost defining role knowledge and information as play substrata of «information society». The mankind opened for itself and actively exploits a new resource – information. Information society puts forward on the arena new type of the power, at the heart of which activity – mastering by a new resource: information and knowledge. The password of the new power – intelligence as synthesis of knowledge, information and communications, the strength of mind, fundamental sociocultural values. In a postindustrial society, the power of knowledge and information is crucial in the management of the company, pushing into the background the influence of money and state coercion.
Abstract: Several valve stiction models have been proposed in the literature to help understand and study the behavior of sticky valves. In this paper, an alternative black-box modeling approach based on Neural Network (NN) is presented. It is shown that with proper network type and optimum model structures, the performance of the developed NN stiction model is comparable to other established method. The resulting NN model is also tested for its robustness against the uncertainty in the stiction parameter values. Predictive mode operation also shows excellent performance of the proposed model for multi-steps ahead prediction.
Abstract: In conventional reliability assessment, the reliability data of system components are treated as crisp values. The collected data have some uncertainties due to errors by human beings/machines or any other sources. These uncertainty factors will limit the understanding of system component failure due to the reason of incomplete data. In these situations, we need to generalize classical methods to fuzzy environment for studying and analyzing the systems of interest. Fuzzy set theory has been proposed to handle such vagueness by generalizing the notion of membership in a set. Essentially, in a Fuzzy Set (FS) each element is associated with a point-value selected from the unit interval [0, 1], which is termed as the grade of membership in the set. A Vague Set (VS), as well as an Intuitionistic Fuzzy Set (IFS), is a further generalization of an FS. Instead of using point-based membership as in FS, interval-based membership is used in VS. The interval-based membership in VS is more expressive in capturing vagueness of data. In the present paper, vague set theory coupled with conventional Lambda-Tau method is presented for reliability analysis of repairable systems. The methodology uses Petri nets (PN) to model the system instead of fault tree because it allows efficient simultaneous generation of minimal cuts and path sets. The presented method is illustrated with the press unit of the paper mill.
Abstract: In this paper, subtractive clustering based fuzzy inference system approach is used for early detection of faults in the function oriented software systems. This approach has been tested with real time defect datasets of NASA software projects named as PC1 and CM1. Both the code based model and joined model (combination of the requirement and code based metrics) of the datasets are used for training and testing of the proposed approach. The performance of the models is recorded in terms of Accuracy, MAE and RMSE values. The performance of the proposed approach is better in case of Joined Model. As evidenced from the results obtained it can be concluded that Clustering and fuzzy logic together provide a simple yet powerful means to model the earlier detection of faults in the function oriented software systems.
Abstract: The amounts of radioactivity in the igneous rocks
have been investigated; samples were collected from the total of eight
basalt rock types in the northeastern of Kurdistan region/Iraq. The
activity concentration of 226Ra (238U) series, 228Ac (232Th) series, 40K
and 137Cs were measured using Planar HPGe and NaI(Tl) detectors.
Along the study area the radium equivalent activities Raeq in Bq/Kg
of samples under investigation were found in the range of 22.16 to
77.31 Bq/Kg with an average value of 44.8 Bq/Kg, this value is much
below the internationally accepted value of 370 Bq/Kg. To estimate
the health effects of this natural radioactive composition, the average
values of absorbed gamma dose rate D (55 nGyh-1), Indoor and
outdoor annual effective dose rates Eied (0.11 mSvy-1) . and Eoed
(0.03 mSvy-1), External hazard index Hex (0.138) and internal hazard
index Hin(0.154), and representative level index Iγr (0.386) have been
calculated and found to be lower than the worldwide average values.
