Abstract: This article presents a study of the effect of
a contra-rotating component on the efficiency of centrifugal
compressors. A contra-rotating centrifugal compressor (CRCC) is
constructed using two independent rotors, rotating in the opposite
direction and replacing the single rotor of a conventional centrifugal
compressor (REF). To respect the geometrical parameters of the REF
one, two rotors of the CRCC are designed, based on a single rotor
geometry, using the hub and shroud length ratio parameter of the
meridional contour. Firstly, the first rotor is designed by choosing
a value of length ratio. Then, the second rotor is calculated to be
adapted to the fluid flow of the first rotor according aerodynamics
principles. In this study, four values of length ratios 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and
0.6 are used to create four configurations CF1, CF2, CF3, and CF4
respectively. For comparison purpose, the circumferential velocity at
the outlet of the REF and the CRCC are preserved, which means that
the single rotor of the REF and the second rotor of the CRCC rotate
with the same speed of 16000rpm. The speed of the first rotor in this
case is chosen to be equal to the speed of the second rotor. The CFD
simulation is conducted to compare the performance of the CRCC
and the REF with the same boundary conditions. The results show
that the configuration with a higher length ratio gives higher pressure
rise. However, its efficiency is lower. An investigation over the entire
operating range shows that the CF1 is the best configuration in this
case. In addition, the CRCC can improve the pressure rise as well
as the efficiency by changing the speed of each rotor independently.
The results of changing the first rotor speed show with a 130% speed
increase, the pressure ratio rises of 8.7% while the efficiency remains
stable at the flow rate of the design operating point.
Abstract: Liquid spray heat exchanger is the critical equipment of temperature regulating system by gaseous nitrogen which realizes the environment temperature in the range of -180 ℃~+180 ℃. Liquid nitrogen is atomized into smaller liquid drops through liquid nitrogen sprayer and then contacts with gaseous nitrogen to be cooled. By adjusting the pressure of liquid nitrogen and gaseous nitrogen, the flowrate of liquid nitrogen is changed to realize the required outlet temperature of heat exchanger. The temperature accuracy of shrouds is ±1 ℃. Liquid nitrogen spray heat exchanger is simulated by CATIA, and the numerical simulation is performed by FLUENT. The comparison between the tests and numerical simulation is conducted. Moreover, the results help to improve the design of liquid nitrogen spray heat exchanger.
Abstract: The microstructure, mechanical properties and metalgraphic characteristics of Ni plated AlN-Astaloy Cr-M powders were investigated using specimens produced by tube furnace sintering at 1000-1400 °C temperature. A uniform nickel layer on AlN powders was deposited prior to sintering using electroless plating technique. A composite consisting of ternary additions, metallic phase, Ni and ceramic phase AlN within a matrix of Astaloy Cr-M had been prepared under Ar shroud and then tube furnace sintered. The experimental results carried out by using XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) for composition (10% AlN-Astaloy Cr-M) 10% Ni at 1400 °C suggest that the best properties as 132.45HB and permittivity were obtained at 1400 °C.
Abstract: Temperature regulating system by gaseous nitrogen is
of importance to the space environment simulator, which keeps the
shrouds in the temperature range from -150°C to +150°C. Liquid
nitrogen spray equipment is one of the most critical parts in the
temperature regulating system by gaseous nitrogen. Y type jet
atomizer and internal mixing atomizer of the liquid nitrogen spray
equipment are studied in this paper, 2D/3D atomizer model was
established and grid division was conducted respectively by the
software of Catia and ICEM. Based on the above preparation,
numerical simulation on the spraying process of the atomizer by
FLUENT is performed. Using air and water as the medium,
comparison between the tests and numerical simulation was conducted
and the results of two ways match well. Hence, it can be conclude that
this atomizer model can be applied in the numerical simulation of
liquid nitrogen spray equipment.
Abstract: Intermetallic materials are among advanced
technology materials that have outstanding mechanical and physical
properties for high temperature applications. Especially creep
resistance, low density and high hardness properties stand out in such
intermetallics. The microstructure, mechanical properties of %88Ni-
%10Cr and %2Mn powders were investigated using specimens
produced by tube furnace sintering at 900-1300°C temperature. A
composite consisting of ternary additions, a metallic phase, Fe, Cr
and Mn have been prepared under Ar shroud and then tube furnace
sintered. XRD, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), were
investigated to characterize the properties of the specimens.
Experimental results carried out for composition %88Ni-%10Cr and
%2Mn at 1300°C suggest that the best properties as 138,80HV and
6,269/cm3 density were obtained at 1300°C.
Abstract: Universal modeling method well proven for industrial
compressors was applied for design of the high flow rate supersonic
stage. Results were checked by ANSYS CFX and NUMECA Fine
Turbo calculations. The impeller appeared to be very effective at
transonic flow velocities. Stator elements efficiency is acceptable at
design Mach numbers too. Their loss coefficient versus inlet flow
angle performances correlates well with Universal modeling
prediction. The impeller demonstrates ability of satisfactory operation
at design flow rate. Supersonic flow behavior in the impeller inducer
at the shroud blade to blade surface Φ des deserves additional study.
Abstract: Generally flow behavior in centrifugal fan is observed
to be in a state of instability with flow separation zones on suction
surface as well as near the front shroud. Overall performance of the
diffusion process in a centrifugal fan could be enhanced by
judiciously introducing the boundary layer suction slots. With easy
accessibility of CFD as an analytical tool, an extensive numerical
whole field analysis of the effect of boundary layer suction slots in
discrete regions of suspected separation points is possible. This paper
attempts to explore the effect of boundary layer suction slots
corresponding to various geometrical locations on the impeller with
converging configurations for the slots. The analysis shows that the
converging suction slots located on the impeller blade about 25%
from the trailing edge, significantly improves the static pressure
recovery across the fan. Also it is found that Slots provided at a
radial distance of about 12% from the leading and trailing edges
marginally improve the static pressure recovery across the fan.
Abstract: The parametrical study of Shrouded Contra-rotating
Rotor was done in this paper based on 2D axisymmetric simulations.
The calculations were made with an actuator disk as double rotor
model. It objects to explore and quantify the effects of different shroud
geometry parameters mainly using the performance of power loading
(PL), which could evaluate the whole propulsion system capability as
5 Newtontotal thrust generationfor hover demand. The numerical
results show that:The increase of nozzle radius is desired but limited
by the flow separation, its optimal design is around 1.15 times rotor
radius, the viscosity effects greatly constraint the influence of nozzle
shape, the divergent angle around 10.5° performs best for chosen
nozzle length;The parameters of inlet such as leading edge curvature,
radius and internal shape do not affect thrust great but play an
important role in pressure distribution which could produce most part
of shroud thrust, they should be chosen according to the reduction of
adverse pressure gradients to reduce the risk of boundary separation.
Abstract: This paper presents a numerical analysis of the
performance of a five-bladed Darrieus vertical-axis water turbine,
based on the NACA 0025 blade profile, for both bare and shrouded
configurations. A complete campaign of 2-D simulations, performed
for several values of tip speed ratio and based on RANS unsteady
calculations, has been performed to obtain the rotor torque and power
curves. Also the effect of a NACA-shaped central hydrofoil has been
investigated, with the aim of evaluating the impact of a solid
blockage on the performance of the shrouded rotor configuration.
The beneficial effect of the shroud on rotor overall performances
has clearly been evidenced, while the adoption of the central
hydrofoil has proved to be detrimental, being the resulting flow slow
down (due to the presence of the obstacle) much higher with respect
to the flow acceleration (due to the solid blockage effect).
