Abstract: Heart sound is an acoustic signal and many techniques
used nowadays for human recognition tasks borrow speech recognition
techniques. One popular choice for feature extraction of accoustic
signals is the Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) which
maps the signal onto a non-linear Mel-Scale that mimics the human
hearing. However the Mel-Scale is almost linear in the frequency
region of heart sounds and thus should produce similar results with
the standard cepstral coefficients (CC). In this paper, MFCC is
investigated to see if it produces superior results for PCG based
human identification system compared to CC. Results show that the
MFCC system is still superior to CC despite linear filter-banks in
the lower frequency range, giving up to 95% correct recognition rate
for MFCC and 90% for CC. Further experiments show that the high
recognition rate is due to the implementation of filter-banks and not
from Mel-Scaling.
Abstract: This paper presents a procedure for estimating VAR
using Sequential Discounting VAR (SDVAR) algorithm for online
model learning to detect fraudulent acts using the telecommunications
call detailed records (CDR). The volatility of the VAR is observed
allowing for non-linearity, outliers and change points based on the
works of [1]. This paper extends their procedure from univariate
to multivariate time series. A simulation and a case study for
detecting telecommunications fraud using CDR illustrate the use of
the algorithm in the bivariate setting.
Abstract: As the majority of faults are found in a few of its
modules so there is a need to investigate the modules that are
affected severely as compared to other modules and proper
maintenance need to be done in time especially for the critical
applications. As, Neural networks, which have been already applied
in software engineering applications to build reliability growth
models predict the gross change or reusability metrics. Neural
networks are non-linear sophisticated modeling techniques that are
able to model complex functions. Neural network techniques are
used when exact nature of input and outputs is not known. A key
feature is that they learn the relationship between input and output
through training. In this present work, various Neural Network Based
techniques are explored and comparative analysis is performed for
the prediction of level of need of maintenance by predicting level
severity of faults present in NASA-s public domain defect dataset.
The comparison of different algorithms is made on the basis of Mean
Absolute Error, Root Mean Square Error and Accuracy Values. It is
concluded that Generalized Regression Networks is the best
algorithm for classification of the software components into different
level of severity of impact of the faults. The algorithm can be used to
develop model that can be used for identifying modules that are
heavily affected by the faults.
Abstract: This paper presents an optimal design of linear phase
digital high pass finite impulse response (FIR) filter using Improved
Particle Swarm Optimization (IPSO). In the design process, the filter
length, pass band and stop band frequencies, feasible pass band and
stop band ripple sizes are specified. FIR filter design is a multi-modal
optimization problem. An iterative method is introduced to find the
optimal solution of FIR filter design problem. Evolutionary
algorithms like real code genetic algorithm (RGA), particle swarm
optimization (PSO), improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO)
have been used in this work for the design of linear phase high pass
FIR filter. IPSO is an improved PSO that proposes a new definition
for the velocity vector and swarm updating and hence the solution
quality is improved. A comparison of simulation results reveals the
optimization efficacy of the algorithm over the prevailing
optimization techniques for the solution of the multimodal, nondifferentiable,
highly non-linear, and constrained FIR filter design
problems.
Abstract: Infrared focal plane arrays (IRFPA) sensors, due to
their high sensitivity, high frame frequency and simple structure, have
become the most prominently used detectors in military applications.
However, they suffer from a common problem called the fixed pattern
noise (FPN), which severely degrades image quality and limits the
infrared imaging applications. Therefore, it is necessary to perform
non-uniformity correction (NUC) on IR image. The algorithms of
non-uniformity correction are classified into two main categories, the
calibration-based and scene-based algorithms. There exist some
shortcomings in both algorithms, hence a novel non-uniformity
correction algorithm based on non-linear fit is proposed, which
combines the advantages of the two algorithms. Experimental results
show that the proposed algorithm acquires a good effect of NUC with
a lower non-uniformity ratio.
Abstract: In cryptography, confusion and diffusion are very
important to get confidentiality and privacy of message in block
ciphers and stream ciphers. There are two types of network to provide
confusion and diffusion properties of message in block ciphers. They
are Substitution- Permutation network (S-P network), and Feistel
network. NLFS (Non-Linear feedback stream cipher) is a fast and
secure stream cipher for software application. NLFS have two modes
basic mode that is synchronous mode and self synchronous mode.
Real random numbers are non-deterministic. R-box (random box)
based on the dynamic properties and it performs the stochastic
transformation of data that can be used effectively meet the
challenges of information is protected from international destructive
impacts. In this paper, a new implementation of stochastic
transformation will be proposed.
Abstract: In the present study, a numerical analysis is carried
out to investigate unsteady MHD (magneto-hydrodynamic) flow and
heat transfer of a non-Newtonian second grade viscoelastic fluid
over an oscillatory stretching sheet. The flow is induced due to an
infinite elastic sheet which is stretched oscillatory (back and forth) in
its own plane. Effect of viscous dissipation and joule heating are
taken into account. The non-linear differential equations governing
the problem are transformed into system of non-dimensional
differential equations using similarity transformations. A newly
developed meshfree numerical technique Element free Galerkin
method (EFGM) is employed to solve the coupled non linear
differential equations. The results illustrating the effect of various
parameters like viscoelastic parameter, Hartman number, relative
frequency amplitude of the oscillatory sheet to the stretching rate and
Eckert number on velocity and temperature field are reported in
terms of graphs and tables. The present model finds its application in
polymer extrusion, drawing of plastic films and wires, glass, fiber
and paper production etc.
Abstract: In this paper, Neuro-Fuzzy based Fuzzy Subtractive
Clustering Method (FSCM) and Self Tuning Fuzzy PD-like
Controller (STFPDC) were used to solve non-linearity and trajectory
problems of pitch AND yaw angles of Twin Rotor MIMO system
(TRMS). The control objective is to make the beams of TRMS reach
a desired position quickly and accurately. The proposed method
could achieve control objectives with simpler controller. To simplify
the complexity of STFPDC, ANFIS based FSCM was used to
simplify the controller and improve the response. The proposed
controllers could achieve satisfactory objectives under different input
signals. Simulation results under MATLAB/Simulink® proved the
improvement of response and superiority of simplified STFPDC on
Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC).

The power factor is also improved in the current source. The PLL system is used to extract the fundamental component of the even sequence under conditions mentioned of the power system voltage.
Abstract: In this paper the performance of unified power flow
controller is investigated in controlling the flow of po wer over the
transmission line. Voltage sources model is utilized to study the
behaviour of the UPFC in regulating the active, reactive power and
voltage profile. This model is incorporated in Newton Raphson
algorithm for load flow studies. Simultaneous method is employed
in which equations of UPFC and the power balance equations of
network are combined in to one set of non-linear algebraic equations.
It is solved according to the Newton raphson algorithm. Case studies
are carried on standard 5 bus network. Simulation is done in Matlab.
The result of network with and without using UPFC are compared in
terms of active and reactive power flows in the line and active and
reactive power flows at the bus to analyze the performance of UPFC.
Abstract: The present work presents a method of calculating the
ductility of rectangular sections of beams considering nonlinear
behavior of concrete and steel. This calculation procedure allows us
to trace the curvature of the section according to the bending
moment, and consequently deduce ductility. It also allowed us to
study the various parameters that affect the value of the ductility. A
comparison of the effect of maximum rates of tension steel, adopted
by the codes, ACI [1], EC8 [2] and RPA [3] on the value of the
ductility was made. It was concluded that the maximum rate of steels
permitted by the ACI [1] codes and RPA [3] are almost similar in
their effect on the ductility and too high. Therefore, the ductility
mobilized in case of an earthquake is low, the inverse of code EC8
[2]. Recommendations have been made in this direction.
Abstract: Batch adsorption of recalcitrant melanoidin using the abundantly available coal fly ash was carried out. It had low specific surface area (SBET) of 1.7287 m2/g and pore volume of 0.002245 cm3/g while qualitative evaluation of the predominant phases in it was done by XRD analysis. Colour removal efficiency was found to be dependent on various factors studied. Maximum colour removal was achieved around pH 6, whereas increasing sorbent mass from 10g/L to 200 g/L enhanced colour reduction from 25% to 86% at 298 K. Spontaneity of the process was suggested by negative Gibbs free energy while positive values for enthalpy change showed endothermic nature of the process. Non-linear optimization of error functions resulted in Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson isotherms describing sorption equilibrium data best. The coal fly ash had maximum sorption capacity of 53 mg/g and could thus be used as a low cost adsorbent in melanoidin removal.
Abstract: The design of Automatic Generation Control (AGC) system plays a vital role in automation of power system. This paper proposes Hybrid Neuro Fuzzy (HNF) approach for AGC of two-area interconnected reheat thermal power system with the consideration of Generation Rate Constraint (GRC). The advantage of proposed controller is that it can handle the system non-linearities and at the same time the proposed approach is faster than conventional controllers. The performance of HNF controller has been compared with that of both conventional Proportional Integral (PI) controller as well as Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) both in the absence and presence of Generation Rate Constraint (GRC). System performance is examined considering disturbance in each area of interconnected power system.
Abstract: Based on a non-linear single track model which
describes the dynamics of vehicle, an optimal path planning strategy
is developed. Real time optimization is used to generate reference
control values to allow leading the vehicle alongside a calculated lane
which is optimal for different objectives such as energy consumption,
run time, safety or comfort characteristics. Strict mathematic
formulation of the autonomous driving allows taking decision on
undefined situation such as lane change or obstacle avoidance. Based
on position of the vehicle, lane situation and obstacle position, the
optimization problem is reformulated in real-time to avoid the
obstacle and any car crash.
Abstract: This paper considers the effect of heat generation
proportional l to (T - T∞ )p , where T is the local temperature and T∞
is the ambient temperature, in unsteady free convection flow near the
stagnation point region of a three-dimensional body. The fluid is
considered in an ambient fluid under the assumption of a step change
in the surface temperature of the body. The non-linear coupled partial
differential equations governing the free convection flow are solved
numerically using an implicit finite-difference method for different
values of the governing parameters entering these equations. The
results for the flow and heat characteristics when p ≤ 2 show that
the transition from the initial unsteady-state flow to the final steadystate
flow takes place smoothly. The behavior of the flow is seen
strongly depend on the exponent p.
Abstract: In the present study, fracture behavior of woven
fabric-reinforced glass/epoxy composite laminates under mode III
crack growth was experimentally investigated and numerically
modeled. Two methods were used for the calculation of the strain
energy release rate: the experimental compliance calibration (CC)
method and the Virtual Crack Closure Technique (VCCT). To
achieve this aim ECT (Edge Crack Torsion) was used to evaluate
fracture toughness in mode III loading (out of plane-shear) at
different crack lengths. Load–displacement and associated energy
release rates were obtained for various case of interest. To
calculate fracture toughness JIII, two criteria were considered
including non-linearity and maximum points in load-displacement
curve and it is observed that JIII increases with the crack length
increase. Both the experimental compliance method and the virtual
crack closure technique proved applicable for the interpretation of the
fracture mechanics data of woven glass/epoxy laminates in mode III.
Abstract: This paper presents the experimental results of
comparison between leakage currents and discharge currents. The leakage currents were obtained on polluted porcelain insulator.
Whereas, the discharge currents were obtained on lightly artificial
polluted porcelain specimen. The conducted measurements were
leakage current or discharge current and applied voltage. The insulator or specimen was in a hermetically sealed chamber, and the
current waveforms were analyzed using FFT.
The result indicated that the leakage current (LC) on low RH condition the fifth harmonic would be visible, and followed by the
seventh harmonic. The insulator had capacitive property. Otherwise,
on 99% relative humidity, the fifth harmonic would also be visible,
and the phase angle reached up to 12.2 degree. Whereas, on discharge current, the third harmonic would be visible, and followed
by fifth harmonic. The third harmonic would increase as pressure reduced. On this condition, the specimen had a non-linear characteristics
Abstract: The main objective of this paper is a comparative
investigate in enhancement of damping power system oscillation via
coordinated design of the power system stabilizer (PSS) and static
synchronous series compensator (SSSC) and static synchronous
compensator (STATCOM). The design problem of FACTS-based
stabilizers is formulated as a GA based optimization problem. In this
paper eigenvalue analysis method is used on small signal stability of
single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system installed with SSSC and
STATCOM. The generator is equipped with a PSS. The proposed
stabilizers are tested on a weakly connected power system with
different disturbances and loading conditions. This aim is to enhance
both rotor angle and power system stability. The eigenvalue analysis
and non-linear simulation results are presented to show the effects of
these FACTS-based stabilizers and reveal that SSSC exhibits the best
effectiveness on damping power system oscillation.
Abstract: All the geophysical phenomena including river
networks and flow time series are fractal events inherently and fractal
patterns can be investigated through their behaviors. A non-linear
system like a river basin can well be analyzed by a non-linear
measure such as the fractal analysis. A bilateral study is held on the
fractal properties of the river network and the river flow time series.
A moving window technique is utilized to scan the fractal properties
of them. Results depict both events follow the same strategy
regarding to the fractal properties. Both the river network and the
time series fractal dimension tend to saturate in a distinct value.
Abstract: In this article, we aim to discuss the formulation of two explicit group iterative finite difference methods for time-dependent two dimensional Burger-s problem on a variable mesh. For the non-linear problems, the discretization leads to a non-linear system whose Jacobian is a tridiagonal matrix. We discuss the Newton-s explicit group iterative methods for a general Burger-s equation. The proposed explicit group methods are derived from the standard point and rotated point Crank-Nicolson finite difference schemes. Their computational complexity analysis is discussed. Numerical results are given to justify the feasibility of these two proposed iterative methods.
