Abstract: The work describes the use of a synthetic transmit
aperture (STA) with a single element transmitting and all elements
receiving in medical ultrasound imaging. STA technique is a novel
approach to today-s commercial systems, where an image is acquired
sequentially one image line at a time that puts a strict limit on the
frame rate and the amount of data needed for high image quality. The
STA imaging allows to acquire data simultaneously from all
directions over a number of emissions, and the full image can be
reconstructed.
In experiments a 32-element linear transducer array with 0.48 mm
inter-element spacing was used. Single element transmission aperture
was used to generate a spherical wave covering the full image region.
The 2D ultrasound images of wire phantom are presented obtained
using the STA and commercial ultrasound scanner Antares to
demonstrate the benefits of the SA imaging.
Abstract: this paper presents a novel scheme which is capable of reducing the error rate and improves the transmission performance in the asynchronous cooperative MIMO systems. A case study of image transmission is applied to prove the efficient of scheme. The linear dispersion structure is employed to accommodate the cooperative wireless communication network in the dynamic topology of structure, as well as to achieve higher throughput than conventional space–time codes based on orthogonal designs. The LDPC encoder without girth-4 and the STBC encoder with guard intervals are respectively introduced. The experiment results show that the combined coder of LDPC-STBC with guard intervals can be the good error correcting coders and BER performance in the asynchronous cooperative communication. In the case study of image transmission, the results show that in the transmission process, the image quality which is obtained by applied combined scheme is much better than it which is not applied the scheme in the asynchronous cooperative MIMO systems.
Abstract: In this work, we present a comparison between
different techniques of image compression. First, the image is
divided in blocks which are organized according to a certain scan.
Later, several compression techniques are applied, combined or
alone. Such techniques are: wavelets (Haar's basis), Karhunen-Loève
Transform, etc. Simulations show that the combined versions are the
best, with minor Mean Squared Error (MSE), and higher Peak Signal
to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and better image quality, even in the presence
of noise.
Abstract: Automatic currency note recognition invariably
depends on the currency note characteristics of a particular country
and the extraction of features directly affects the recognition ability.
Sri Lanka has not been involved in any kind of research or
implementation of this kind. The proposed system “SLCRec" comes
up with a solution focusing on minimizing false rejection of notes.
Sri Lankan currency notes undergo severe changes in image quality
in usage. Hence a special linear transformation function is adapted to
wipe out noise patterns from backgrounds without affecting the
notes- characteristic images and re-appear images of interest. The
transformation maps the original gray scale range into a smaller
range of 0 to 125. Applying Edge detection after the transformation
provided better robustness for noise and fair representation of edges
for new and old damaged notes. A three layer back propagation
neural network is presented with the number of edges detected in row
order of the notes and classification is accepted in four classes of
interest which are 100, 500, 1000 and 2000 rupee notes. The
experiments showed good classification results and proved that the
proposed methodology has the capability of separating classes
properly in varying image conditions.
Abstract: Image compression is one of the most important
applications Digital Image Processing. Advanced medical imaging
requires storage of large quantities of digitized clinical data. Due to
the constrained bandwidth and storage capacity, however, a medical
image must be compressed before transmission and storage. There
are two types of compression methods, lossless and lossy. In Lossless
compression method the original image is retrieved without any
distortion. In lossy compression method, the reconstructed images
contain some distortion. Direct Cosine Transform (DCT) and Fractal
Image Compression (FIC) are types of lossy compression methods.
This work shows that lossy compression methods can be chosen for
medical image compression without significant degradation of the
image quality. In this work DCT and Fractal Compression using
Partitioned Iterated Function Systems (PIFS) are applied on different
modalities of images like CT Scan, Ultrasound, Angiogram, X-ray
and mammogram. Approximately 20 images are considered in each
modality and the average values of compression ratio and Peak
Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) are computed and studied. The quality
of the reconstructed image is arrived by the PSNR values. Based on
the results it can be concluded that the DCT has higher PSNR values
and FIC has higher compression ratio. Hence in medical image
compression, DCT can be used wherever picture quality is preferred
and FIC is used wherever compression of images for storage and
transmission is the priority, without loosing picture quality
diagnostically.
Abstract: For about two decades scientists have been
developing techniques for enhancing the quality of medical images
using Fourier transform, DWT (Discrete wavelet transform),PDE
model etc., Gabor wavelet on hexagonal sampled grid of the images
is proposed in this work. This method has optimal approximation
theoretic performances, for a good quality image. The computational
cost is considerably low when compared to similar processing in the
rectangular domain. As X-ray images contain light scattered pixels,
instead of unique sigma, the parameter sigma of 0.5 to 3 is found to
satisfy most of the image interpolation requirements in terms of high
Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) , lower Mean Squared Error
(MSE) and better image quality by adopting windowing technique.
Abstract: Artifact is one of the most important factors in
degrading the CT image quality and plays an important role in
diagnostic accuracy. In this paper, some artifacts typically appear in
Spiral CT are introduced. The different factors such as patient,
equipment and interpolation algorithm which cause the artifacts are
discussed and new developments and image processing algorithms to
prevent or reduce them are presented.
Abstract: Assessment for image quality traditionally needs its
original image as a reference. The conventional method for assessment
like Mean Square Error (MSE) or Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR)
is invalid when there is no reference. In this paper, we present a new
No-Reference (NR) assessment of image quality using blur and noise.
The recent camera applications provide high quality images by help of
digital Image Signal Processor (ISP). Since the images taken by the
high performance of digital camera have few blocking and ringing
artifacts, we only focus on the blur and noise for predicting the
objective image quality. The experimental results show that the
proposed assessment method gives high correlation with subjective
Difference Mean Opinion Score (DMOS). Furthermore, the proposed
method provides very low computational load in spatial domain and
similar extraction of characteristics to human perceptional assessment.
Abstract: This paper describes a novel method for automatic
estimation of the contours of weld defect in radiography images.
Generally, the contour detection is the first operation which we apply
in the visual recognition system. Our approach can be described as a
region based maximum likelihood formulation of parametric
deformable contours. This formulation provides robustness against
the poor image quality, and allows simultaneous estimation of the
contour parameters together with other parameters of the model.
Implementation is performed by a deterministic iterative algorithm
with minimal user intervention. Results testify for the very good
performance of the approach especially in synthetic weld defect
images.
Abstract: To model the human visual system (HVS) in the region of interest, we propose a new objective metric evaluation adapted to wavelet foveation-based image compression quality measurement, which exploits a foveation setup filter implementation technique in the DWT domain, based especially on the point and region of fixation of the human eye. This model is then used to predict the visible divergences between an original and compressed image with respect to this region field and yields an adapted and local measure error by removing all peripheral errors. The technique, which we call foveation wavelet visible difference prediction (FWVDP), is demonstrated on a number of noisy images all of which have the same local peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), but visibly different errors. We show that the FWVDP reliably predicts the fixation areas of interest where error is masked, due to high image contrast, and the areas where the error is visible, due to low image contrast. The paper also suggests ways in which the FWVDP can be used to determine a visually optimal quantization strategy for foveation-based wavelet coefficients and to produce a quantitative local measure of image quality.
Abstract: Volume rendering is widely used in medical CT image
visualization. Applying 3D image visualization to diagnosis
application can require accurate volume rendering with high
resolution. Interpolation is important in medical image processing
applications such as image compression or volume resampling.
However, it can distort the original image data because of edge
blurring or blocking effects when image enhancement procedures
were applied. In this paper, we proposed adaptive tension control
method exploiting gradient information to achieve high resolution
medical image enhancement in volume visualization, where restored
images are similar to original images as much as possible. The
experimental results show that the proposed method can improve
image quality associated with the adaptive tension control efficacy.
Abstract: As far as the latest technological improvements are concerned, digital systems more become popular than the past. Despite this growing demand to the digital systems, content copy and attack against the digital cinema contents becomes a serious problem. To solve the above security problem, we propose “traceable watermarking using Hash functions for digital cinema system. Digital Cinema is a great application for traceable watermarking since it uses watermarking technology during content play as well as content transmission. The watermark is embedded into the randomly selected movie frames using CRC-32 techniques. CRC-32 is a Hash function. Using it, the embedding position is distributed by Hash Function so that any party cannot break off the watermarking or will not be able to change. Finally, our experimental results show that proposed DWT watermarking method using CRC-32 is much better than the convenient watermarking techniques in terms of robustness, image quality and its simple but unbreakable algorithm.
Abstract: Super resolution (SR) technologies are now being
applied to video to improve resolution. Some TV sets are now
equipped with SR functions. However, it is not known if super
resolution image reconstruction (SRR) for TV really works or not.
Super resolution with non-linear signal processing (SRNL) has
recently been proposed. SRR and SRNL are the only methods for
processing video signals in real time. The results from subjective
assessments of SSR and SRNL are described in this paper. SRR video
was produced in simulations with quarter precision motion vectors and
100 iterations. These are ideal conditions for SRR. We found that the
image quality of SRNL is better than that of SRR even though SRR
was processed under ideal conditions.
Abstract: Measurement of the quality of image compression is important for image processing application. In this paper, we propose an objective image quality assessment to measure the quality of gray scale compressed image, which is correlation well with subjective quality measurement (MOS) and least time taken. The new objective image quality measurement is developed from a few fundamental of objective measurements to evaluate the compressed image quality based on JPEG and JPEG2000. The reliability between each fundamental objective measurement and subjective measurement (MOS) is found. From the experimental results, we found that the Maximum Difference measurement (MD) and a new proposed measurement, Structural Content Laplacian Mean Square Error (SCLMSE), are the suitable measurements that can be used to evaluate the quality of JPEG200 and JPEG compressed image, respectively. In addition, MD and SCLMSE measurements are scaled to make them equivalent to MOS, given the rate of compressed image quality from 1 to 5 (unacceptable to excellent quality).
Abstract: In this paper, image compression using hybrid vector
quantization scheme such as Multistage Vector Quantization
(MSVQ) and Pyramid Vector Quantization (PVQ) are introduced. A
combined MSVQ and PVQ are utilized to take advantages provided
by both of them. In the wavelet decomposition of the image, most of
the information often resides in the lowest frequency subband.
MSVQ is applied to significant low frequency coefficients. PVQ is
utilized to quantize the coefficients of other high frequency
subbands. The wavelet coefficients are derived using lifting scheme.
The main aim of the proposed scheme is to achieve high compression
ratio without much compromise in the image quality. The results are
compared with the existing image compression scheme using MSVQ.
Abstract: In recent years image watermarking has become an
important research area in data security, confidentiality and image
integrity. Many watermarking techniques were proposed for medical
images. However, medical images, unlike most of images, require
extreme care when embedding additional data within them because
the additional information must not affect the image quality and
readability. Also the medical records, electronic or not, are linked to
the medical secrecy, for that reason, the records must be confidential.
To fulfill those requirements, this paper presents a lossless
watermarking scheme for DICOM images. The proposed a fragile
scheme combines two reversible techniques based on difference
expansion for patient's data hiding and protecting the region of
interest (ROI) with tamper detection and recovery capability.
Patient's data are embedded into ROI, while recovery data are
embedded into region of non-interest (RONI). The experimental
results show that the original image can be exactly extracted from the
watermarked one in case of no tampering. In case of tampered ROI,
tampered area can be localized and recovered with a high quality
version of the original area.
Abstract: Computed tomography and laminography are heavily investigated in a compressive sensing based image reconstruction framework to reduce the dose to the patients as well as to the radiosensitive devices such as multilayer microelectronic circuit boards. Nowadays researchers are actively working on optimizing the compressive sensing based iterative image reconstruction algorithm to obtain better quality images. However, the effects of the sampled data’s properties on reconstructed the image’s quality, particularly in an insufficient sampled data conditions have not been explored in computed laminography. In this paper, we investigated the effects of two data properties i.e. sampling density and data incoherence on the reconstructed image obtained by conventional computed laminography and a recently proposed method called spherical sinusoidal scanning scheme. We have found that in a compressive sensing based image reconstruction framework, the image quality mainly depends upon the data incoherence when the data is uniformly sampled.
Abstract: A low bit rate still image compression scheme by
compressing the indices of Vector Quantization (VQ) and generating
residual codebook is proposed. The indices of VQ are compressed by
exploiting correlation among image blocks, which reduces the bit per
index. A residual codebook similar to VQ codebook is generated that
represents the distortion produced in VQ. Using this residual
codebook the distortion in the reconstructed image is removed,
thereby increasing the image quality. Our scheme combines these two
methods. Experimental results on standard image Lena show that our
scheme can give a reconstructed image with a PSNR value of 31.6 db
at 0.396 bits per pixel. Our scheme is also faster than the existing VQ
variants.
Abstract: In this paper, an innovative watermarking scheme for audio signal based on genetic algorithms (GA) in the discrete wavelet transforms is proposed. It is robust against watermarking attacks, which are commonly employed in literature. In addition, the watermarked image quality is also considered. We employ GA for the optimal localization and intensity of watermark. The watermark detection process can be performed without using the original audio signal. The experimental results demonstrate that watermark is inaudible and robust to many digital signal processing, such as cropping, low pass filter, additive noise.
Abstract: We present a low frequency watermarking method
adaptive to image content. The image content is analyzed and
properties of HVS are exploited to generate a visual mask of the
same size as the approximation image. Using this mask we embed the
watermark in the approximation image without degrading the image
quality. Watermark detection is performed without using the original
image. Experimental results show that the proposed watermarking
method is robust against most common image processing operations,
which can be easily implemented and usually do not degrade the
image quality.
