Abstract: Code- mixing in spontaneous speech has been widely
discussed, but not in virtual situations; especially in context of the
third language learning students. Thus, this study is an attempt to
explore the linguistic characteristics of the mixing of Japanese,
English and Thai in a mobile Line chat room by students with their
background of English as L2, Japanese as L3 and Thai as mother
tongue. The result found that insertion of Thai content words is a very
common linguistic phenomenon embedded with the other two
languages in the sentences. As chatting is to be ‘relational’ or
‘interactional’, it affected the style of lexical choices to be speech-like,
more personal and emotionally-related. A personal pronoun in
Japanese is often mixed into the sentences. The Japanese
sentence-final question particle か “ka” was added to the end of the
sentence based on Thai grammar rules. Some unique characteristics
were created while chatting.
Abstract: Mahasweta Devi and Toni Morrison are the two
stalwarts of the Indian English and the Afro-American literature
respectively. The writings of these two novelists are authentic and
powerful records of the lives of the people because much of their
personal experiences have gone into the making of their works. Devi,
a representative force of the Indian English literature, is also a social
activist working with the tribals of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and West
Bengal. Most of her works echo the lives and struggles of the
subalterns as is evident in her “best beloved book” Chotti Munda and
His Arrow. The novelist focuses on the struggle of the tribals against
the colonial and the feudal powers to create their own identity,
thereby, embarking on the ideological project of ‘setting the record
straight’. The Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison, on the other hand,
brings to the fore the crucial issues of gender, race and class in many
of her significant works. In one of her representative works Sula, the
protagonist emerges as a non- conformist and directly confronts the
notion of a ‘good woman’ nurtured by the community of the Blacks.
In addition to this, the struggle of the Blacks against the White
domination, also become an important theme of the text. The thrust
of the paper lies in making a critical analysis of the portrayal of the
heroic attempts of the subaltern protagonist and the artistic endeavor
of the novelists in challenging the stereotypes.
Abstract: This paper reports a structured literature review of the
application of Health Information Technology in developing
countries, defined as the World Bank categories Low-income
countries, Lower-middle-income, and Upper-middle-income
countries. The aim was to identify and classify the various
applications of health information technology to assess its current
state in developing countries and explore potential areas of research.
We offer specific analysis and application of HIT in Libya as one of
the developing countries. A structured literature review was
conducted using the following online databases: IEEE, Science
Direct, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Publication dates were set for
2000-2013. For the PubMed search, publications in English, French,
and Arabic were specified. Using a content analysis approach, 159
papers were analyzed and a total number of 26 factors were identified
that affect the adoption of health information technology. Of the 2681
retrieved articles, 159 met the inclusion criteria which were carefully
analyzed and classified. The implementation of health information
technology across developing countries is varied. Whilst it was
initially expected financial constraints would have severely limited
health information technology implementation, some developing
countries like India have nevertheless dominated the literature and
taken the lead in conducting scientific research. Comparing the
number of studies to the number of countries in each category, we
found that Low-income countries and Lower-middle-income had
more studies carried out than Upper-middle-income countries.
However, whilst IT has been used in various sectors of the economy,
the healthcare sector in developing countries is still failing to benefit
fully from the potential advantages that IT can offer.
Abstract: Social media continues to grow, and user interfaces
may become more appealing if cultural characteristics are
incorporated into their design.
Facebook was designed in the west, and the original language was
English. Subsequently, the words in the user interface were translated
to other languages, including Arabic.
Arabic words are written from right to left, and English is written
from left to right. The translated version may misrepresent the
original design and users’ preferences may be influenced by their
culture, which should be considered in the user interface design.
Previous research indicates that users are more comfortable when
interacting with a user interface, which relates to their own culture.
Therefore, this paper, using a survey, investigates the preferences of
Saudi Arabians on the Arabic version of the user interface of
Facebook.
Abstract: Ontologies provide a common understanding of a
specific domain of interest that can be communicated between people
and used as background knowledge for automated reasoning in a
wide range of applications. In this paper, we address the design of
multilingual ontologies following well-defined knowledge
engineering methodologies with the support of novel collaborative
development approaches. In particular, we present a collaborative
platform which allows ontologies to be developed incrementally in
multiple languages. This is made possible via an appropriate mapping
between language independent concepts and one lexicalization per
language (or a lexical gap in case such lexicalization does not exist).
The collaborative platform has been designed to support the
development of the Universal Knowledge Core, a multilingual
ontology currently in English, Italian, Chinese, Mongolian, Hindi and
Bangladeshi. Its design follows a workflow-based development
methodology that models resources as a set of collaborative objects
and assigns customizable workflows to build and maintain each
collaborative object in a community driven manner, with extensive
support of modern web 2.0 social and collaborative features.
Abstract: The importance of using mother tongue and
translation in foreign language classrooms cannot be ignored and
translation can be utilized as a method in English Language Teaching
courses. There exist researches advocating or objecting to the use of
translation in foreign language learning but they all have a point in
common: Translation should be used as an aid to teaching, not an end
in itself. In this research, prospective English language teachers’
opinions about translation use and use of mother tongue in foreign
language teaching are investigated and according to the findings,
some explanations and recommendations are made.
Abstract: In today’s world, the LED display has been used for
presenting visual information under various circumstances. Such
information is an important intermediary in the human information
processing. Researchers have been investigated diverse factors that
influence this process effectiveness. The letter size is undoubtedly
one major factor that has been tested and recommended by many
standards and guidelines. However, viewing information on the
display from direct perpendicular position is a typical assumption
whereas many actual events are required viewing from the angles.
This current research aims to study the effect of oblique viewing
angle and viewing distance on ability to recognize alphabet, number,
and English word. The total of ten participants was volunteered to our
3 x 4 x 4 within subject study. Independent variables include three
distance levels (2, 6, and 12 m), four oblique angles (0, 45, 60, 75
degree), and four target types (alphabet, number, short word, and
long word). Following the method of constant stimuli our study
suggests that the larger oblique angle, ranging from 0 to 75 degree
from the line of sight, results in significant higher legibility threshold
or larger font size required (p-value < 0.05). Viewing distance factor
also shows to have significant effect on the threshold (p-value
Abstract: Students’ achievement and motivation in learning
English in Malaysia is a worrying trend as it is lagging behind several
other countries in Asia. Thus, necessary actions have to be taken by
the parties concerned to overcome this problem. The purpose of this
research was to study the effects of drill and practice courseware on
students’ achievement and motivation in learning English language.
A multimedia courseware was developed for this purpose. The
independent variable was the drill and practice courseware while the
dependent variables were the students’ achievement and motivation.
Their achievement was measured using pre-test and post-test scores,
while motivation was measured using a questionnaire. A total of 60
students from three vernacular primary schools in a northern state in
Malaysia were randomly selected in this study. The findings indicate:
(1) a significant difference between the students’ pre-test and posttest
scores after using the courseware, (2) no significant difference in
the achievement score between male and female students after using
the courseware, (3) a significant difference in motivation score
between the female and the male students, and (4) while the female
students scored significantly higher than the male students in the
aspects of relevance, confidence and satisfaction, no significant
difference in terms of attention was observed between them. Overall,
the findings clearly indicate that although the female students are
significantly more motivated than their male students, they are
equally good in terms of achievement after learning from the
courseware. Through this study, the drill and practice courseware is
proven to influence the students’ learning and motivation.
Abstract: The main aim of this research was to investigate the
perspectives of English language teachers and learners on the effect
of test techniques on reading comprehension, test performance and
assessment. The research has also aimed at finding the differences
between teacher and learner perspectives, specifying the test
techniques which have the highest effect, investigating the other
factors affecting reading comprehension, and comparing the results
with the similar studies. In order to achieve these objectives,
perspectives and findings of different researchers were reviewed, two
different questionnaires were prepared to collect data for the
perspectives of teachers and learners, the questionnaires were applied
to 26 learners and 8 teachers from the University of Batna (Algeria),
and quantitative and qualitative data analysis of the results were
done. The results and analysis of the results show that different test
techniques affect reading comprehension, test performance and
assessment at different percentages rates.
Abstract: The present study debates students’ perceptions of the
use of technology in learning English as a Foreign Language. Its aim
is to explore and understand students’ preparation and presentation of
Posters, PowerPoint and Animated Videos by drawing attention to
visual and oral elements. The data is collected through observations
and semi-structured interviews and analyzed through
phenomenological data analysis steps. The themes emerged from the
data, visual learning satisfaction in using information and
communication technology, providing structure to oral presentation,
learning from peers’ presentations, draw attention to using Posters,
PowerPoint and Animated Videos as each supports visual learning
and organization of thoughts in oral presentations.
Abstract: This study is an attempt to raise the awareness of the
stakeholders and the authorities on the sensitivity of Algerian
secondary school teachers of English as a Foreign Language about
the students’ loss of English language skills learned during formal
schooling with effort and at expense and the supposed measures to
arrest that loss. Data was collected from secondary school teachers of
EFL and analyzed quantitatively using a questionnaire containing
open-ended and close-ended questions. The results advocate a
consensus about the need for actions to be adopted to make
assessment techniques outcome-oriented. Most of the participants
were in favor of including curricular activities involving
contextualized learning, problem-solving learning critical selfawareness,
self and peer-assisted learning, use of computers and
internet so as to make learners autonomous.
Abstract: The paper presents combined automatic speech
recognition (ASR) of English and machine translation (MT) for
English and Croatian and Croatian-English language pairs in the
domain of business correspondence. The first part presents results of
training the ASR commercial system on English data sets, enriched
by error analysis. The second part presents results of machine
translation performed by free online tool for English and Croatian
and Croatian-English language pairs. Human evaluation in terms of
usability is conducted and internal consistency calculated by
Cronbach's alpha coefficient, enriched by error analysis. Automatic
evaluation is performed by WER (Word Error Rate) and PER
(Position-independent word Error Rate) metrics, followed by
investigation of Pearson’s correlation with human evaluation.
Abstract: Audio-lingual Method (ALM) is a teaching approach
that is claimed that ineffective for teaching second/foreign languages.
Because some linguists and second/foreign language teachers believe
that ALM is a rote learning style. However, this study is done on a
belief that ALM will be able to solve Thais’ English speaking
problem. This paper aims to report the findings on teaching English
speaking to adult learners with an “adapted ALM”, one distinction of
which is to use Thai as the medium language of instruction.
The participants are consisted of 9 adult learners. They were
allowed to speak English more freely using both the materials
presented in the class and their background knowledge of English. At
the end of the course, they spoke English more fluently, more
confidently, to the extent that they applied what they learnt both in
and outside the class.
Abstract: The study explored the role of metacognition in foreign language anxiety on a sample of 411 Taiwanese students of English as a Foreign Language. The reading strategy inventory was employed to evaluate the tertiary learners’ level of metacognitive awareness and a semi-structured background questionnaire was also used to examine the learners’ perceptions of their English proficiency and satisfaction of their current English learning. In addition, gender and academic level differences in employment of reading strategies were investigated. The results showed the frequency of reading strategy use increase slightly along with academic years and males and females actually employ different reading strategies. The EFL tertiary learners in the present study utilized cognitive strategies more frequently than metacognitive strategies or support strategies. Male students use metacognitive strategy more often while female students use cognitive and support strategy more frequently.
Abstract: The objective is to study the satisfaction on English with an online learning. Online learning system mainly consists of English lessons, exercises, tests, web boards, and supplementary lessons for language practice. The sample groups are 80 Thai students studying English for Business Communication, majoring in Hotel and Lodging Management. The data are analyzed by mean, standard deviation (S.D.) value from the questionnaires. The results were found that the most average of satisfaction on academic aspects are technological searching tool through E-learning system that support the students’ learning (4.51), knowledge evaluation on pre-post learning and teaching (4.45), and change for project selections according to their interest, subject contents including practice in the real situations (4.45), respectively.
Abstract: The objectives were to study language learning strategies (LLSs) employed by Chinese students, and the frequency of LLSs they used, and examine the relationship between the use of LLSs and gender. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) by Oxford was administered to thirty-six Chinese students at Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University in Thailand. The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Three useful findings were found on the use of LLSs reported by Chinese students. First, Chinese students used overall LLSs at a high level. Second, among the six strategy groups, Chinese students employed compensation strategy most frequently and memory strategy least frequently. Third, the research results also revealed that gender had significant effect on Chinese Student’s use of overall LLSs.
Abstract: This study investigates the role and impact of English loan words on Japanese language in travel brochures. The issues arising from a potential switch to English as a tool to absorb the West’s advanced knowledge and technology in the modernization of Japan to a means of linking Japan with the rest of the world and enhancing the country’s international presence. Sociolinguistic contexts was used to analyze data collected from the Nippon Travel agency "HIS"’s brochures in Thailand, revealing that English plays the most important role as lexical gap fillers and special effect givers. An increasing mixer of English to Japanese affects how English is misused, the way the Japanese see the world and the present generation’s communication gap.
Abstract: The purposes of the study are to investigate the problems that the translators encountered when translating English idioms into Thai and study the strategies they applied in solving the problems. The original English version and the Thai translated version of each of two works of fiction were purposively selected for the study. The first was Mr. Maybe, written by Jane Green and translated by Montharat Songphao. The second was The Trials of Tiffany Trott, written by Isabel Wolff and translated by Jitraporn Notoda. Thirty idioms of two translated works of fiction were, then, analyzed. Questionnaires and interviews with the translators of each novel were conducted to obtain the best possible information.
The results indicated that the only type of problem that occurred was cultural problems, and these were solved differently by the two translators
Abstract: The linguistic competence of Thai university students majoring in Business English was examined in the context of knowledge of English language inflection, and also various linguistic elements. Errors analysis was applied to the results of the testing. Levels of errors in inflection, tense and linguistic elements were shown to be significantly high for all noun, verb and adjective inflections. Findings suggest that students do not gain linguistic competence in their use of English language inflection, because of interlanguage interference. Implications for curriculum reform and treatment of errors in the classroom are discussed.
Abstract: As widely accepted, didactic multiple-choice tests are referred as a tool providing feedback easily and quickly. Despite the final test scores are corrected by a special formula and number of high plausibility distractors is taken into consideration, the results may be influenced by the random choice. The survey was held in three academic years at the Faculty of Informatics and Management, University of Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic, where the multiple-choice test scores were compared to the open-answer ones. The research sample included 567 respondents. The collected data were processed by the NCSS2007 statistic software by the method of frequency and multiple regression analysis and presented in the form of figures and tables. The results proved statistically significant differences in test scores in academic years 2 and 3, and were discussed from the point of the credit system and conditions for teaching/learning English in the Czech education system.
