Abstract: This paper presents studies on the development and characterization of nanocomposites based on ethylene-propylene terpolymer rubber (EPDM), chlorobutyl rubber (IIR-Cl) and organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT). Mixtures were made containing 0, 3 and 6 phr (parts per 100 parts rubber) OMMT, respectively. They were obtained by melt intercalation in an internal mixer - Plasti-Corder Brabender, in suitable blending parameters, at high temperature for 11 minutes. Curing agents were embedded on a laboratory roller at 70-100 ºC, friction 1:1.1, processing time 5 minutes. Rubber specimens were obtained by compression, using a hydraulic press at 165 ºC and a pressing force of 300 kN. Curing time, determined using the Monsanto rheometer, decreases with the increased amount of OMMT in the mixtures. At the same time, it was noticed that mixtures containing OMMT show improvement in physical-mechanical properties. These types of nanocomposites may be used to obtain rubber seals for the space application or for other areas of application.
Abstract: This paper summarizes the results of a survey on
smart non-structural element dynamic dissipation when installed
in modern high-rise mega-frame prototypes. An innovative glazed
curtain wall was designed using Shape Memory Alloy (SMA)
joints in order to increase the energy dissipation and enhance
the seismic/wind response of the structures. The studied buildings
consisted of thirty- and sixty-storey planar frames, extracted from
reference three-dimensional steel Moment Resisting Frame (MRF)
with outriggers and belt trusses. The internal core was composed of
a CBF system, whilst outriggers were placed every fifteen stories
to limit second order effects and inter-storey drifts. These structural
systems were designed in accordance with European rules and
numerical FE models were developed with an open-source code,
able to account for geometric and material nonlinearities. With
regard to the characterization of non-structural building components,
full-scale crescendo tests were performed on aluminium/glass curtain
wall units at the laboratory of the Construction Technologies
Institute (ITC) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR),
deriving force-displacement curves. Three-dimensional brick-based
inelastic FE models were calibrated according to experimental results,
simulating the fac¸ade response. Since recent seismic events and
extreme dynamic wind loads have generated the large occurrence of
non-structural components failure, which causes sensitive economic
losses and represents a hazard for pedestrians safety, a more
dissipative glazed curtain wall was studied. Taking advantage of the
mechanical properties of SMA, advanced smart joints were designed
with the aim to enhance both the dynamic performance of the single
non-structural unit and the global behavior. Thus, three-dimensional
brick-based plastic FE models were produced, based on the innovated
non-structural system, simulating the evolution of mechanical
degradation in aluminium-to-glass and SMA-to-glass connections
when high deformations occurred. Consequently, equivalent nonlinear
links were calibrated to reproduce the behavior of both tested and
smart designed units, and implemented on the thirty- and sixty-storey
structural planar frame FE models. Nonlinear time history analyses
(NLTHAs) were performed to quantify the potential of the new
system, when considered in the lateral resisting frame system (LRFS)
of modern high-rise MRFs. Sensitivity to the structure height was
explored comparing the responses of the two prototypes. Trends
in global and local performance were discussed to show that, if
accurately designed, advanced materials in non-structural elements provide new sources of energy dissipation.
Abstract: A high quality crack-free film of Bi2Te3 material has been deposited for the first time using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) and microstructures of various films have been investigated. One of the most important thermoelectric (TE) applications is Bi2Te3 to manufacture TE generators (TEG) which can convert waste heat into electricity targeting the global warming issue. However, the high cost of the manufacturing process of TEGs keeps them expensive and out of reach for commercialization. Therefore, utilizing EPD as a simple and cost-effective method will open new opportunities for TEG’s commercialization. This method has been recently used for advanced materials such as microelectronics and has attracted a lot of attention from both scientists and industry. In this study, the effect of media of suspensions has been investigated on the quality of the deposited films as well as their microstructure. In summary, finding an appropriate suspension is a critical step for a successful EPD process and has an important effect on both the film’s quality and its future properties.
Abstract: The main aim of the presented experiments is to
improve behaviour of sandwich structures under dynamic loading,
such as crash or explosion. This paper describes experimental
investigation on the response of new advanced materials to low and
high velocity load. Blast wave energy absorbers were designed using
two types of porous lightweight raw particle materials based on
expanded glass and ceramics with dimensions of 0.5-1 mm,
combined with polymeric binder. The effect of binder amount on the
static and dynamic properties of designed materials was observed.
Prism shaped specimens were prepared and loaded to obtain physicomechanical
parameters – bulk density, compressive and flexural
strength under quasistatic load, the dynamic response was determined
using Split Hopkinson Pressure bar apparatus. Numerical
investigation of the material behaviour in sandwich structure was
performed using implicit/explicit solver LS-Dyna. As the last step,
the developed material was used as the interlayer of blast resistant
litter bin, and it´s functionality was verified by real field blast tests.

Abstract: This investigation presents the formulation of kerf (width of slit) and optimal control parameter settings of wire electrochemical discharge machining which results minimum possible kerf while machining Al7075/SiCp MMCs. WEDM is proved its efficiency and effectiveness to cut the hard ceramic reinforced MMCs within the permissible budget. Among the distinct performance measures of WEDM process, kerf is an important performance characteristic which determines the dimensional accuracy of the machined component while producing high precision components. The lack of available of the machinability information such advanced MMCs result the more experimentation in the manufacturing industries. Therefore, extensive experimental investigations are essential to provide the database of effect of various control parameters on the kerf while machining such advanced MMCs in WEDM. Literature reviled the significance some of the electrical parameters which are prominent on kerf for machining distinct conventional materials. However, the significance of reinforced particulate size and volume fraction on kerf is highlighted in this work while machining MMCs along with the machining parameters of pulse-on time, pulse-off time and wire tension. Usually, the dimensional tolerances of machined components are decided at the design stage and a machinist pay attention to produce the required dimensional tolerances by setting appropriate machining control variables. However, it is highly difficult to determine the optimal machining settings for such advanced materials on the shop floor. Therefore, in the view of precision of cut, kerf (cutting width) is considered as the measure of performance for the model. It was found from the literature that, the machining conditions of higher fractions of large size SiCp resulting less kerf where as high values of pulse-on time result in a high kerf. A response surface model is used to predict the relative significance of various control variables on kerf. Consequently, a powerful artificial intelligence called genetic algorithms (GA) is used to determine the best combination of the control variable settings. In the next step the conformation test was conducted for the optimal parameter settings and found good agreement between the GA kerf and measured kerf. Hence, it is clearly reveal that the effectiveness and accuracy of the developed model and program to analyze the kerf and to determine its optimal process parameters. The results obtained in this work states that, the resulted optimized parameters are capable of machining the Al7075/SiCp MMCs more efficiently and with better dimensional accuracy.
Abstract: Semiconductor nanomaterials like TiO2 nanoparticles
(TiO2-NPs) approximately less than 100 nm in diameter have become
a new generation of advanced materials due to their novel and
interesting optical, dielectric, and photo-catalytic properties. With the
increasing use of NPs in commerce, to date few studies have
investigated the toxicological and environmental effects of NPs.
Motivated by the importance of TiO2-NPs that may contribute to the
cancer research field especially from the treatment prospective
together with the fractal analysis technique, we have investigated the
effect of TiO2-NPs on colony morphology in the dark condition
using fractal dimension as a key morphological characterization
parameter. The aim of this work is mainly to investigate the cytotoxic
effects of TiO2-NPs in the dark on the growth of human cervical
carcinoma (HeLa) cell colonies from morphological aspect. The in
vitro studies were carried out together with the image processing
technique and fractal analysis. It was found that, these colonies were
abnormal in shape and size. Moreover, the size of the control
colonies appeared to be larger than those of the treated group. The
mean Df +/- SEM of the colonies in untreated cultures was
1.085±0.019, N= 25, while that of the cultures treated with TiO2-NPs
was 1.287±0.045. It was found that the circularity of the control
group (0.401±0.071) is higher than that of the treated group
(0.103±0.042). The same tendency was found in the diameter
parameters which are 1161.30±219.56 μm and 852.28±206.50 μm
for the control and treated group respectively. Possible explanation of
the results was discussed, though more works need to be done in
terms of the for mechanism aspects. Finally, our results indicate that
fractal dimension can serve as a useful feature, by itself or in
conjunction with other shape features, in the classification of cancer
colonies.
Abstract: Intermetallic Ni3Al – based alloys belong to a group
of advanced materials characterized by good chemical and physical
properties (such as structural stability, corrosion resistance) which
offer advenced technological applications. The paper presents the
study of catalytic properties of Ni3Al foils (thickness approximately
50 &m) in the methanol and hexane decomposition. The egzamined
material posses microcrystalline structure without any additional
catalysts on the surface. The better catalytic activity of Ni3Al foils
with respect to quartz plates in both methanol and hexane
decomposition was confirmed. On thin Ni3Al foils the methanol
conversion reaches approximately 100% above 480 oC while the
hexane conversion reaches approximately 100% (98,5%) at 500 oC.
Deposit formed during the methanol decomposition is built up of
carbon nanofibers decorated with metal-like nanoparticles.
