Abstract: One of the most important challenging factors in
medical images is nominated as noise. Image denoising refers to the
improvement of a digital medical image that has been infected by
Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN). The digital medical image
or video can be affected by different types of noises. They are
impulse noise, Poisson noise and AWGN. Computed tomography
(CT) images are subjects to low quality due to the noise. Quality of
CT images is dependent on absorbed dose to patients directly in such
a way that increase in absorbed radiation, consequently absorbed
dose to patients (ADP), enhances the CT images quality. In this
manner, noise reduction techniques on purpose of images quality
enhancement exposing no excess radiation to patients is one the
challenging problems for CT images processing. In this work, noise
reduction in CT images was performed using two different
directional 2 dimensional (2D) transformations; i.e., Curvelet and
Contourlet and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) thresholding
methods of BayesShrink and AdaptShrink, compared to each other
and we proposed a new threshold in wavelet domain for not only
noise reduction but also edge retaining, consequently the proposed
method retains the modified coefficients significantly that result good
visual quality. Data evaluations were accomplished by using two
criterions; namely, peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and Structure
similarity (Ssim).
Abstract: This paper describes how to dimension the electric
components of a 48V hybrid system considering real customer use.
Furthermore, it provides information about savings in energy and
CO2 emissions by a customer-tailored 48V hybrid. Based on measured customer profiles, the electric units such as the
electric motor and the energy storage are dimensioned. Furthermore,
the CO2 reduction potential in real customer use is determined
compared to conventional vehicles. Finally, investigations are carried
out to specify the topology design and preliminary considerations in
order to hybridize a conventional vehicle with a 48V hybrid system.
The emission model results from an empiric approach also taking into
account the effects of engine dynamics on emissions. We analyzed
transient engine emissions during representative customer driving
profiles and created emission meta models. The investigation showed
a significant difference in emissions when simulating realistic
customer driving profiles using the created verified meta models
compared to static approaches which are commonly used for vehicle
simulation.
Abstract: One of the fundamental characteristics of Information
and Communication Technology (ICT) has been the ever-changing
nature of continuous release and models of ICTs with its impact on
the academic, social, and psychological benefits of its introduction in
schools. However, there seems to be a growing concern about its
negative impact on students when introduced early in schools for
teaching and learning. This study aims to design a model of child
development factors affecting the early introduction of ICTs in
schools in an attempt to improve the understanding of child
development and introduction of ICTs in schools. The proposed
model is based on a sound theoretical framework. It was designed
following a literature review of child development theories and child
development factors. The child development theoretical framework
that fitted to the best of all child development factors was then chosen
as the basis for the proposed model. This study hence found that the
Jean Piaget cognitive developmental theory is the most adequate
theoretical frameworks for modeling child development factors for
ICT introduction in schools.
Abstract: Damaturu is the capital of Yobe State in northeastern
Nigeria where civic amenities and facilities are not adequate even
after 24 years of its existence. The volatile security and political
situations are most significant causes for the same. The basic facility
for the citizens in terms of drinking water and electricity are not
available. For the drinking water, they have to rely on personal
boreholes or the filtered borehole waters available in packaged
sachets in market. The present study is concerned with environmental
impact of indiscriminate disposal of drinking synthetic polythene
water sachets in Damaturu. The sachet water is popularly called as
“pure water”, but its purity is questionable. Increased production and
consumption of sachet water has led to indiscriminate dumping and
disposal of empty sachets leading to serious environmental threat.
The evidence of this is seen for sachets littering the streets and the
drainages blocked by ‘blocks’ of water sachet waste. Sachet water
gained much popularity in Nigeria because the product is convenient
for use, affordable and economically viable. The present study aims
to find out the solution to this environmental problem. The fieldbased
study has found some significant factors that cause
environmental and socio economic effect due to this. Some
recommendations have been made based on research findings
regarding sustainable waste management, recycling and re-use of the
non-biodegradable products in society.
Abstract: E-retailing is the sale of goods online that takes place
over the Internet. The Internet has shrunk the entire World. World eretailing
is growing at an exponential rate in the Americas, Europe
and Asia. However, e-retailing costs require expensive investment,
such as hardware, software, and security systems. Cloud computing
technology is internet-based computing for the management and
delivery of applications and services. Cloud-based e-retailing
application models allow enterprises to lower their costs with their
effective implementation of e-retailing activities. In this paper, we
describe the concept of cloud computing and present the architecture
of cloud computing, combining the features of e-retailing. In
addition, we propose a strategy for implementing cloud computing
with e-retailing. Finally, we explain the benefits from the
architecture.
Abstract: In this study, failure analysis of pipe system at a micro
hydroelectric power plant is investigated. Failure occurred at the pipe
system in the powerhouse during shut down operation of the water
flow by a valve. This locking had caused a sudden shock wave, also
called “Water-hammer effect”, resulting in noise and inside pressure
increase. After visual investigation of the effect of the shock wave on
the system, a circumference crack was observed at the pipe flange
weld region. To establish the reason for crack formation, calculations
of pressure and stress values at pipe, flange and welding seams were
carried out and concluded that safety factor was high (2.2), indicating
that no faulty design existed. By further analysis, pipe system and
hydroelectric power plant was examined. After observations it is
determined that the plant did not include a ventilation nozzle (air
trap), that prevents the system of sudden pressure increase inside the
pipes which is caused by water-hammer effect. Analyses were carried
out to identify the influence of water-hammer effect on inside
pressure increase and it was concluded that, according Jowkowsky’s
equation, shut down time is effective on inside pressure increase. The
valve closing time was uncertain but by a shut down time of even one
minute, inside pressure would increase by 7.6 bar (working pressure
was 34.6 bar). Detailed investigations were also carried out on the
assembly of the pipe-flange system by considering technical
drawings. It was concluded that the pipe-flange system was not
installed according to the instructions. Two of five weld seams were
not applied and one weld was carried out faulty. This incorrect and
inadequate weld seams resulted in; insufficient connection of the pipe
to the flange constituting a strong notch effect at weld seam regions,
increase in stress values and the decrease of strength and safety
factor.
Abstract: This paper discusses the general methods to saturation
in the steady-state, two axis (d & q) frame models of synchronous
machines. In particular, the important role of the magnetic coupling
between the d-q axes (cross-magnetizing phenomenon), is
demonstrated. For that purpose, distinct methods of saturation
modeling of dumper synchronous machine with cross-saturation are
identified, and detailed models synthesis in d-q axes. A number of
models are given in the final developed form. The procedure and the
novel models are verified by a critical application to prove the
validity of the method and the equivalence between all developed
models is reported. Advantages of some of the models over the
existing ones and their applicability are discussed.
Abstract: This paper addresses minimizing the makespan of the
distributed permutation flow shop scheduling problem. In this
problem, there are several parallel identical factories or flowshops
each with series of similar machines. Each job should be allocated to
one of the factories and all of the operations of the jobs should be
performed in the allocated factory. This problem has recently gained
attention and due to NP-Hard nature of the problem, metaheuristic
algorithms have been proposed to tackle it. Majority of the proposed
algorithms require large computational time which is the main
drawback. In this study, a general variable neighborhood search
algorithm (GVNS) is proposed where several time-saving schemes
have been incorporated into it. Also, the GVNS uses the sophisticated
method to change the shaking procedure or perturbation depending
on the progress of the incumbent solution to prevent stagnation of the
search. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared to
the state-of-the-art algorithms based on standard benchmark
instances.

Abstract: This study presents a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm
to obtain optimum designs for steel space buildings. The optimum
design problem of three-dimensional steel frames is mathematically
formulated according to provisions of LRFD-AISC (Load and
Resistance factor design of American Institute of Steel Construction).
Design constraints such as the strength requirements of structural
members, the displacement limitations, the inter-story drift and the
other structural constraints are derived from LRFD-AISC
specification. In this study, a hybrid algorithm by using teachinglearning
based optimization (TLBO) and harmony search (HS)
algorithms is employed to solve the stated optimum design problem.
These algorithms are two of the recent additions to metaheuristic
techniques of numerical optimization and have been an efficient tool
for solving discrete programming problems. Using these two
algorithms in collaboration creates a more powerful tool and
mitigates each other’s weaknesses. To demonstrate the powerful
performance of presented hybrid algorithm, the optimum design of a
large scale steel building is presented and the results are compared to
the previously obtained results available in the literature.
Abstract: Groundwater is vital to the livelihoods and health of the majority of the people, since it provides almost the entire water resource for domestic, agricultural and industrial uses. Groundwater quality comprises the physical, chemical and bacteriological qualities. The present investigation was carried out to determine the physicochemical and bacteriological quality of the ground water sources in the residential areas of Karakulam Grama Panchayath in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala state in India. Karakulam is located in the eastern suburbs of Thiruvananthapuram city. The major drinking water source of the residents in the study area is wells. The present study aims to assess the portability and irrigational suitability of groundwater in the study area. The water samples were collected from randomly selected dug wells and bore wells in the study area during post monsoon and pre monsoon seasons of the year 2014 after a preliminary field survey. The physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters of the water samples were analyzed following standard procedures. The concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Pb and Mn) in the acid digested water samples were determined by using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results showed that the pH of well water samples ranged from acidic to alkaline level. In majority of well water samples (>54 %) the iron and magnesium content were found high in both the seasons studied, and the values were above the permissible limits of WHO drinking water quality standards. Bacteriological analyses showed that 63% of the wells were contaminated with total coliforms in both the seasons studied. Irrigational suitability of groundwater was assessed by determining the chemical indices like Sodium Percentage (%Na), Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC), Permeability Index (PI), and the results indicate that the well water in the study area are good for irrigation purposes. Therefore, the study reveals the degradation of drinking water quality groundwater sources in Karakulam Grama Panchayath in Thiruvananthapuram District, Keralain terms of its chemical and bacteriological characteristics, and is not potable without proper treatment. In the study, more than 1/3rdof the well water samples tested were positive for total coliforms, and the bacterial contamination may pose threat to public health. The study recommends the need for periodic well water quality monitoring in the study area and to conduct awareness programs among the residents.
Abstract: The influence of cultivation factors such as content of ammonium sulfate, glucose and water in the culture medium and particle size of dry orange waste, on their bioconversion for pectinase production was studied using complete factorial design. A polygalacturonase (PG) was isolated using ion exchange chromatography under gradient elution 0-0,5 m/l NaCl (column equilibrate with acetate buffer pH 4,5), subsequently by sephadex G75 column chromatography was applied and the molecular weight was obtained about 51,28 KDa. Purified PG enzyme exhibits a pH and temperature optima of activity at 5 and 35°C respectively. Treatment of apple juice by purified enzyme extract yielded a clear juice, which was competitive with juice yielded by pure Sigma Aldrich Aspergillus niger enzyme.
Abstract: The present study aimed to determine the
effectiveness of Metaphor therapy on depression among female
students. The sample included 60 female students with depression
symptoms selected by simple sampling and randomly divided into
two equal groups (experimental and control groups). Beck
Depression Inventory was used to measure the variables. This was an
experimental study with a pre-test/post-test design with control
group. Eight metaphor therapy sessions were held for the
experimental group. A post-test was administered to both groups.
Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance
(MANCOVA). Results showed that the Metaphor therapy decreased
depression in the experimental group compared to the control group.
Abstract: As a by-product of the biodiesel industries, glycerol
has been vastly generated which surpasses the market demand. It is
imperative to develop an efficient glycerol valorization processes in
minimizing the net energy requirement and intensifying the biodiesel
production. In this study, base-catalyzed transesterification of
glycerol with dimethyl carbonate using microwave irradiation as
heating method to produce glycerol carbonate was conducted by
varying grades of glycerol, i.e. 70%, 86% and 99% purity, that is
obtained from biodiesel plant. Metal oxide catalysts were used with
varying operating parameters including reaction time, DMC/glycerol
molar ratio, catalyst weight %, temperature and stirring speed. From
the study on the effect of different operating parameters it was found
that the type of catalyst used has the most significant effect on the
transesterification reaction. Amidst the metal oxide catalysts
examined, CaO gave the best performance. This study indicates the
feasibility of producing glycerol carbonate using different grade of
glycerol in both conventional thermal activation and microwave
irradiation with CaO as catalyst. Microwave assisted
transesterification (MAT) of glycerol into glycerol carbonate has
demonstrated itself as an energy efficient route by achieving 94.2%
yield of GC at 65°C, 5 minutes reaction time, 1 wt% CaO and
DMC/glycerol molar ratio of 2. The advantages of MAT
transesterification route has made the direct utilization of bioglycerol
from biodiesel production without the need of purification. This has
marked a more economical and less-energy intensive glycerol
carbonate synthesis route.
Abstract: Anammox is a novel and promising technology that has changed the traditional concept of biological nitrogen removal. The process facilitates direct oxidation of ammonical nitrogen under anaerobic conditions with nitrite as an electron acceptor without addition of external carbon sources. The present study investigated the feasibility of Anammox Hybrid Reactor (AHR) combining the dual advantages of suspended and attached growth media for biodegradation of ammonical nitrogen in wastewater. Experimental unit consisted of 4 nos. of 5L capacity AHR inoculated with mixed seed culture containing anoxic and activated sludge (1:1). The process was established by feeding the reactors with synthetic wastewater containing NH4-H and NO2-N in the ratio 1:1 at HRT (hydraulic retention time) of 1 day. The reactors were gradually acclimated to higher ammonium concentration till it attained pseudo steady state removal at a total nitrogen concentration of 1200 mg/l. During this period, the performance of the AHR was monitored at twelve different HRTs varying from 0.25-3.0 d with increasing NLR from 0.4 to 4.8 kg N/m3d. AHR demonstrated significantly higher nitrogen removal (95.1%) at optimal HRT of 1 day. Filter media in AHR contributed an additional 27.2% ammonium removal in addition to 72% reduction in the sludge washout rate. This may be attributed to the functional mechanism of filter media which acts as a mechanical sieve and reduces the sludge washout rate many folds. This enhances the biomass retention capacity of the reactor by 25%, which is the key parameter for successful operation of high rate bioreactors. The effluent nitrate concentration, which is one of the bottlenecks of anammox process was also minimised significantly (42.3-52.3 mg/L). Process kinetics was evaluated using first order and Grau-second order models. The first-order substrate removal rate constant was found as 13.0 d-1. Model validation revealed that Grau second order model was more precise and predicted effluent nitrogen concentration with least error (1.84±10%). A new mathematical model based on mass balance was developed to predict N2 gas in AHR. The mass balance model derived from total nitrogen dictated significantly higher correlation (R2=0.986) and predicted N2 gas with least error of precision (0.12±8.49%). SEM study of biomass indicated the presence of heterogeneous population of cocci and rod shaped bacteria of average diameter varying from 1.2-1.5 mm. Owing to enhanced NRE coupled with meagre production of effluent nitrate and its ability to retain high biomass, AHR proved to be the most competitive reactor configuration for dealing with nitrogen laden wastewater.
Abstract: Automation of airport operations can greatly improve
ground movement efficiency. In this paper, we study the speed profile
design problem for advanced airport ground movement control and
guidance. The problem is constrained by the surface four-dimensional
trajectory generated in taxi planning. A decomposed approach of two
stages is presented to solve this problem efficiently. In the first stage,
speeds are allocated at control points, which ensure smooth speed
profiles can be found later. In the second stage, detailed speed profiles
of each taxi interval are generated according to the allocated control
point speeds with the objective of minimizing the overall fuel
consumption. We present a swarm intelligence based algorithm for the
first-stage problem and a discrete variable driven enumeration method
for the second-stage problem, since it only has a small set of discrete
variables. Experimental results demonstrate the presented
methodology performs well on real world speed profile design
problems.
Abstract: Electrostatic interaction energy (ΔEEDL) is a part of the Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory, which, together with van der Waals (ΔEVDW) and acid base (ΔEAB) interaction energies, has been extensively used to investigate the initial adhesion of bacteria to surfaces. Electrostatic or electrical double layer interaction energy is considerably affected by surface potential; however it cannot be determined experimentally and is usually replaced by zeta (ζ) potential via electrophoretic mobility. This paper focusses on the effect of ionic concentration as a function of pH and the effect of mineral grain size on ζ potential. It was found that both ionic strength and mineral grain size play a major role in determining the value of ζ potential for the adhesion of P. putida to hematite and quartz surfaces. Higher ζ potential values lead to higher electrostatic interaction energies and eventually to higher total XDLVO interaction energy resulting in bacterial repulsion.
Abstract: In this paper, to model a real life wind turbine, a
probabilistic approach is proposed to model the dynamics of the
blade elements of a small axial wind turbine under extreme stochastic
wind speeds conditions. It was found that the power and the torque
probability density functions even-dough decreases at these extreme
wind speeds but are not infinite. Moreover, we also fund that it
is possible to stabilize the power coefficient (stabilizing the output
power)above rated wind speeds by turning some control parameters.
This method helps to explain the effect of turbulence on the quality
and quantity of the harness power and aerodynamic torque.
Abstract: In this paper we present a classification of the various technologies applied for the solution of the portfolio selection problem according to the discipline and the methodological framework followed. We provide a concise presentation of the emerged categories and we are trying to identify which methods considered obsolete and which lie at the heart of the debate. On top of that, we provide a comparative study of the different technologies applied for efficient portfolio construction and we suggest potential paths for future work that lie at the intersection of the presented techniques.
Abstract: Laban Movement Analysis (LMA), developed in the
dance community over the past seventy years, is an effective method
for observing, describing, notating, and interpreting human
movement to enhance communication and expression in everyday
and professional life. Many applications that use motion capture data
might be significantly leveraged if the Laban qualities will be
recognized automatically. This paper presents an automated
recognition method of Laban qualities from motion capture skeletal
recordings and it is demonstrated on the output of Microsoft’s Kinect
V2 sensor.
