Abstract: The lack of inclusive housing in Australia contributes
to the marginalization and exclusion of people with disability and
older people from family and community life. The Australian
government has handed over the responsibility of increasing the
supply of inclusive housing to the housing industry through an agreed
national access standard and a voluntary strategy. Voluntary
strategies have not been successful in other constituencies and little is
known about what would work in Australia today. Findings from a
research project into the voluntariness of the housing industry
indicate that a reliable and consistent supply is unlikely without an
equivalent increase in demand. The strategy has, however, an
important role to play in the task of changing housing industry
practices towards building more inclusive communities.
Abstract: In this paper, we have presented the effect of varying
time-delays on performance and stability in the single-channel multirate
sampled-data system in hard real-time (RT-Linux) environment.
The sampling task require response time that might exceed the
capacity of RT-Linux. So a straight implementation with RT-Linux is
not feasible, because of the latency of the systems and hence,
sampling period should be less to handle this task. The best sampling
rate is chosen for the sampled-data system, which is the slowest rate
meets all performance requirements. RT-Linux is consistent with its
specifications and the resolution of the real-time is considered 0.01
seconds to achieve an efficient result. The test results of our
laboratory experiment shows that the multi-rate control technique in
hard real-time operating system (RTOS) can improve the stability
problem caused by the random access delays and asynchronization.
Abstract: In this research, we propose a weighted class based
queuing (WCBQ) mechanism to provide class differentiation and to
reduce the load for the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) presence
server (PS). The tasks of admission controller for the PS are
demonstrated. Analysis and simulation models are developed to
quantify the performance of WCBQ scheme. An optimized dropping
time frame has been developed based on which some of the preexisting
messages are dropped from the PS-buffer. Cost functions are
developed and simulation comparison has been performed with FCFS
(First Come First Served) scheme. The results show that the PS
benefits significantly from the proposed queuing and dropping
algorithm (WCBQ) during heavy traffic.
Abstract: Employees commonly encounter unpredictable and
unavoidable work related stressors. Exposure to such stressors can
evoke negative appraisals and associated adverse mental, physical,
and behavioral responses. Because Acceptance and Commitment
Therapy (ACT) emphasizes acceptance of unavoidable stressors and
diffusion from negative appraisals, it may be particularly beneficial
for work stress. Forty-five workers were randomly assigned to an
ACT intervention for work stress (n = 21) or a waitlist control group
(n = 24). The intervention consisted of two 3-hour sessions spaced
one week apart. An examination of group process and outcomes was
conducted using the Revised Sessions Rating Scale. Results indicated
that the ACT participants reported that they perceived the
intervention to be supportive, task focused, and without adverse
therapist behaviors (e.g., feelings of being criticized or discounted).
Additionally, the second session (values clarification and
commitment to action) was perceived to be more supportive and task
focused than the first session (mindfulness, defusion). Process ratings
were correlated with outcomes. Results indicated that perceptions of
therapy supportiveness and task focus were associated with reduced
psychological distress and improved perceived physical health.
Abstract: Flight management system (FMS) is a specialized
computer system that automates a wide variety of in-flight tasks,
reducing the workload on the flight crew to the point that modern
aircraft no longer carry flight engineers or navigators. The primary
function of FMS is to perform the in-flight management of the flight
plan using various sensors (such as GPS and INS often backed up by
radio navigation) to determine the aircraft's position. From the
cockpit FMS is normally controlled through a Control Display Unit
(CDU) which incorporates a small screen and keyboard or touch
screen. This paper investigates the performance of GPS/ INS
integration techniques in which the data fusion process is done using
Kalman filtering. This will include the importance of sensors
calibration as well as the alignment of the strap down inertial
navigation system. The limitations of the inertial navigation systems
are investigated in order to understand why INS sometimes is
integrated with other navigation aids and not just operating in standalone
mode. Finally, both the loosely coupled and tightly coupled
configurations are analyzed for several types of situations and
operational conditions.
Abstract: Automatic Extraction of Event information from
social text stream (emails, social network sites, blogs etc) is a vital
requirement for many applications like Event Planning and
Management systems and security applications. The key information
components needed from Event related text are Event title, location,
participants, date and time. Emails have very unique distinctions over
other social text streams from the perspective of layout and format
and conversation style and are the most commonly used
communication channel for broadcasting and planning events.
Therefore we have chosen emails as our dataset. In our work, we
have employed two statistical NLP methods, named as Finite State
Machines (FSM) and Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for the
extraction of event related contextual information. An application
has been developed providing a comparison among the two methods
over the event extraction task. It comprises of two modules, one for
each method, and works for both bulk as well as direct user input.
The results are evaluated using Precision, Recall and F-Score.
Experiments show that both methods produce high performance and
accuracy, however HMM was good enough over Title extraction and
FSM proved to be better for Venue, Date, and time.
Abstract: Unified Modeling Language (UML) extensions for real time embedded systems (RTES) co-design, are taking a growing interest by a great number of industrial and research communities. The extension mechanism is provided by UML profiles for RTES. It aims at improving an easily-understood method of system design for non-experts. On the other hand, one of the key items of the co- design methods is the Hardware/Software partitioning and scheduling tasks. Indeed, it is mandatory to define where and when tasks are implemented and run. Unfortunately the main goals of co-design are not included in the usual practice of UML profiles. So, there exists a need for mapping used models to an execution platform for both schedulability test and HW/SW partitioning. In the present work, test schedulability and design space exploration are performed at an early stage. The proposed approach adopts Model Driven Engineering MDE. It starts from UML specification annotated with the recent profile for the Modeling and Analysis of Real Time Embedded systems MARTE. Following refinement strategy, transformation rules allow to find a feasible schedule that satisfies timing constraints and to define where tasks will be implemented. The overall approach is experimented for the design of a football player robot application.
Abstract: In this paper we investigate how wide-ranging
organizational support and the more specific form of support,
namely management support, may influence on tourism workers
satisfaction with a cash transaction system. The IS continuance
theory, proposed by Bhattacherjee in 2001, is utilized as a
theoretical framework. This implies that both perceived usefulness
and ease of use is included in the research model, in addition to
organizational and management support. The sample consists of
500 workers from 10 cruise and tourist ferries in Scandinavia that
use a cash transaction system to perform their work tasks. Using
structural equation modelling, results indicate that organizational
support and ease of use perceptions is critical for the users- level of
satisfaction with the cash transaction system.The findings have
implications for business managers and IS practitioners that want
to increase the quality of IT-based business processes within the
tourism industry.
Abstract: The uses of road map in daily activities are numerous
but it is a hassle to construct and update a road map whenever there
are changes. In Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, research on Automatic
Road Extraction (ARE) was explored to solve the difficulties in
updating road map. The research started with using Satellite Image
(SI), or in short, the ARE-SI project. A Hybrid Simple Colour Space
Segmentation & Edge Detection (Hybrid SCSS-EDGE) algorithm
was developed to extract roads automatically from satellite-taken
images. In order to extract the road network accurately, the satellite
image must be analyzed prior to the extraction process. The
characteristics of these elements are analyzed and consequently the
relationships among them are determined. In this study, the road
regions are extracted based on colour space elements and edge details
of roads. Besides, edge detection method is applied to further filter
out the non-road regions. The extracted road regions are validated by
using a segmentation method. These results are valuable for building
road map and detecting the changes of the existing road database.
The proposed Hybrid Simple Colour Space Segmentation and Edge
Detection (Hybrid SCSS-EDGE) algorithm can perform the tasks
fully automatic, where the user only needs to input a high-resolution
satellite image and wait for the result. Moreover, this system can
work on complex road network and generate the extraction result in
seconds.
Abstract: The work reported in this paper is motivated by the fact that there is a need to apply autonomic computing concepts to parallel computing systems. Advancing on prior work based on intelligent cores [36], a swarm-array computing approach, this paper focuses on 'Intelligent agents' another swarm-array computing approach in which the task to be executed on a parallel computing core is considered as a swarm of autonomous agents. A task is carried to a computing core by carrier agents and is seamlessly transferred between cores in the event of a predicted failure, thereby achieving self-ware objectives of autonomic computing. The feasibility of the proposed swarm-array computing approach is validated on a multi-agent simulator.
Abstract: Research into the problem of classification of sonar signals has been taken up as a challenging task for the neural networks. This paper investigates the design of an optimal classifier using a Multi layer Perceptron Neural Network (MLP NN) and Support Vector Machines (SVM). Results obtained using sonar data sets suggest that SVM classifier perform well in comparison with well-known MLP NN classifier. An average classification accuracy of 91.974% is achieved with SVM classifier and 90.3609% with MLP NN classifier, on the test instances. The area under the Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curve for the proposed SVM classifier on test data set is found as 0.981183, which is very close to unity and this clearly confirms the excellent quality of the proposed classifier. The SVM classifier employed in this paper is implemented using kernel Adatron algorithm is seen to be robust and relatively insensitive to the parameter initialization in comparison to MLP NN.
Abstract: In this paper the development of a heat exchanger as a
pilot plant for educational purpose is discussed and the use of neural
network for controlling the process is being presented. The aim of the
study is to highlight the need of a specific Pseudo Random Binary
Sequence (PRBS) to excite a process under control. As the neural
network is a data driven technique, the method for data generation
plays an important role. In light of this a careful experimentation
procedure for data generation was crucial task. Heat exchange is a
complex process, which has a capacity and a time lag as process
elements. The proposed system is a typical pipe-in- pipe type heat
exchanger. The complexity of the system demands careful selection,
proper installation and commissioning. The temperature, flow, and
pressure sensors play a vital role in the control performance. The
final control element used is a pneumatically operated control valve.
While carrying out the experimentation on heat exchanger a welldrafted
procedure is followed giving utmost attention towards safety
of the system. The results obtained are encouraging and revealing
the fact that if the process details are known completely as far as
process parameters are concerned and utilities are well stabilized then
feedback systems are suitable, whereas neural network control
paradigm is useful for the processes with nonlinearity and less
knowledge about process. The implementation of NN control
reinforces the concepts of process control and NN control paradigm.
The result also underlined the importance of excitation signal
typically for that process. Data acquisition, processing, and
presentation in a typical format are the most important parameters
while validating the results.
Abstract: There are very complex communication systems, as
the multifunction radar, MFAR (Multi-Function Array Radar), where
functions are integrated all together, and simultaneously are
performed the classic functions of tracking and surveillance, as all
the functions related to the communication, countermeasures, and
calibration. All these functions are divided into the tasks to execute.
The task scheduler is a key element of the radar, since it does the
planning and distribution of energy and time resources to be shared
and used by all tasks. This paper presents schedulers based on the use
of multiple queue. Several schedulers have been designed and
studied, and it has been made a comparative analysis of different
performed schedulers. The tests and experiments have been done by
means of system software simulation. Finally a suitable set of radar
characteristics has been selected to evaluate the behavior of the task
scheduler working.
Abstract: These This paper looks into frameworks which aim at
furthering the discussion of the role of regenerative design practices
in a city-s historic core and the tool of urban design to achieve urban
revitalization on the island of Cyprus. It also examines the region-s
demographic mix, the effectiveness of its governmental coordination
and the strategies of adaptive reuse and strategic investments in older
areas with existing infrastructure. The two main prongs of
investigation will consider the effect of the existing and proposed
changes in the physical infrastructure and fabric of the city, as well as
the catalytic effect of sustainable urban design practices. Through this
process, the work hopes to integrate the contained potential within
the existing historic core and the contributions and participation of
the migrant and immigrant populations to the local economy. It also
examines ways in which this coupling of factors can bring to the front
the positive effects of this combined effort on an otherwise sluggish
local redevelopment effort. The data for this study is being collected
and organized as part of ongoing urban design and development
student workshop efforts in urban planning and design education.
The work is presented in graphic form and includes data collected
from interviews with study area organizations and the community at
large. Planning work is also based on best practices initiated by the
staff of the Nicosia Master Plan task force, which coordinates holistic
planning efforts for the historic center of the city of Nicosia.
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to determine the
knowledge and skills possessed by instructional design (ID)
practitioners in Malaysia. As ID is a relatively new field in the
country and there seems to be an absence of any studies on its
community of practice, the main objective of this research is to
discover the tasks and activities performed by ID practitioners in
educational and corporate organizations as suggested by the
International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and
Instruction. This includes finding out the ID models applied in the
course of their work. This research also attempts to identify the
barriers and issues as to why some ID tasks and activities are rarely
or never conducted. The methodology employed in this descriptive
study was a survey questionnaire sent to 30 instructional designers
nationwide. The results showed that majority of the tasks and
activities are carried out frequently enough but omissions do occur
due to reasons such as it being out of job scope, the decision was
already made at a higher level, and the lack of knowledge and skills.
Further investigations of a qualitative manner should be conducted
to achieve a more in-depth understanding of ID practices in
Malaysia
Abstract: Segmentation techniques based on Active Contour
Models have been strongly benefited from the use of prior information
during their evolution. Shape prior information is captured from
a training set and is introduced in the optimization procedure to
restrict the evolution into allowable shapes. In this way, the evolution
converges onto regions even with weak boundaries. Although
significant effort has been devoted on different ways of capturing
and analyzing prior information, very little thought has been devoted
on the way of combining image information with prior information.
This paper focuses on a more natural way of incorporating the
prior information in the level set framework. For proof of concept
the method is applied on hippocampus segmentation in T1-MR
images. Hippocampus segmentation is a very challenging task, due
to the multivariate surrounding region and the missing boundary
with the neighboring amygdala, whose intensities are identical. The
proposed method, mimics the human segmentation way and thus
shows enhancements in the segmentation accuracy.
Abstract: Recently there has been a growing interest in the field
of bio-mimetic robots that resemble the behaviors of an insect or an
aquatic animal, among many others. One of various bio-mimetic robot
applications is to explore pipelines, spotting any troubled areas or
malfunctions and reporting its data. Moreover, the robot is able to
prepare for and react to any abnormal routes in the pipeline. Special
types of mobile robots are necessary for the pipeline monitoring tasks.
In order to move effectively along a pipeline, the robot-s movement
will resemble that of insects or crawling animals. When situated in
massive pipelines with complex routes, the robot places fixed sensors
in several important spots in order to complete its monitoring. This
monitoring task is to prevent a major system failure by preemptively
recognizing any minor or partial malfunctions. Areas uncovered by
fixed sensors are usually impossible to provide real-time observation
and examination, and thus are dependent on periodical offline
monitoring. This paper proposes a monitoring system that is able to
monitor the entire area of pipelines–with and without fixed
sensors–by using the bio-mimetic robot.
Abstract: Prediction of bacterial virulent protein sequences can
give assistance to identification and characterization of novel
virulence-associated factors and discover drug/vaccine targets against
proteins indispensable to pathogenicity. Gene Ontology (GO)
annotation which describes functions of genes and gene products as a
controlled vocabulary of terms has been shown effectively for a
variety of tasks such as gene expression study, GO annotation
prediction, protein subcellular localization, etc. In this study, we
propose a sequence-based method Virulent-GO by mining informative
GO terms as features for predicting bacterial virulent proteins.
Each protein in the datasets used by the existing method
VirulentPred is annotated by using BLAST to obtain its homologies
with known accession numbers for retrieving GO terms. After
investigating various popular classifiers using the same five-fold
cross-validation scheme, Virulent-GO using the single kind of GO
term features with an accuracy of 82.5% is slightly better than
VirulentPred with 81.8% using five kinds of sequence-based features.
For the evaluation of independent test, Virulent-GO also yields better
results (82.0%) than VirulentPred (80.7%). When evaluating single
kind of feature with SVM, the GO term feature performs much well,
compared with each of the five kinds of features.
Abstract: Complex engineering design problems consist of
numerous factors of varying criticalities. Considering fundamental features of design and inferior details alike will result in an extensive
waste of time and effort. Design parameters should be introduced gradually as appropriate based on their significance relevant to the
problem context. This motivates the representation of design parameters at multiple levels of an abstraction hierarchy. However, developing abstraction hierarchies is an area that is not well
understood. Our research proposes a novel hierarchical abstraction methodology to plan effective engineering designs and processes. It
provides a theoretically sound foundation to represent, abstract and stratify engineering design parameters and tasks according to causality and criticality. The methodology creates abstraction
hierarchies in a recursive and bottom-up approach that guarantees no
backtracking across any of the abstraction levels. The methodology consists of three main phases, representation, abstraction, and layering to multiple hierarchical levels. The effectiveness of the
developed methodology is demonstrated by a design problem.
Abstract: The study of human hand morphology reveals that developing an artificial hand with the capabilities of human hand is an extremely challenging task. This paper presents the development of a robotic prosthetic hand focusing on the improvement of a tendon driven mechanism towards a biomimetic prosthetic hand. The design of this prosthesis hand is geared towards achieving high level of dexterity and anthropomorphism by means of a new hybrid mechanism that integrates a miniature motor driven actuation mechanism, a Shape Memory Alloy actuated mechanism and a passive mechanical linkage. The synergy of these actuators enables the flexion-extension movement at each of the finger joints within a limited size, shape and weight constraints. Tactile sensors are integrated on the finger tips and the finger phalanges area. This prosthesis hand is developed with an exact size ratio that mimics a biological hand. Its behavior resembles the human counterpart in terms of working envelope, speed and torque, and thus resembles both the key physical features and the grasping functionality of an adult hand.
