Abstract: Durian is the flagship fruit of Mindanao and there is
an abundance of several cultivars with many confusing identities/
names.
The project was conducted to develop procedure for reliable and
rapid detection and sorting of durian planting materials. Moreover, it
is also aimed to establish specific genetic or DNA markers for routine
testing and authentication of durian cultivars in question.
The project developed molecular procedures for routine testing.
SSR primers were also screened and identified for their utility in
discriminating durian cultivars collected.
Results of the study showed the following accomplishments:
1. Twenty (29) SSR primers were selected and identified based on
their ability to discriminate durian cultivars,
2. Optimized and established standard procedure for identification
and authentication of Durian cultivars
3. Genetic profile of durian is now available at Biotech Unit
Our results demonstrate the relevance of using molecular
techniques in evaluating and identifying durian clones. The most
polymorphic primers tested in this study could be useful tools for
detecting variation even at the early stage of the plant especially for
commercial purposes. The process developed combines the efficiency
of the microsatellites development process with the optimization of
non-radioactive detection process resulting in a user-friendly protocol
that can be performed in two (2) weeks and easily incorporated into
laboratories about to start microsatellite development projects. This
can be of great importance to extend microsatellite analyses to other
crop species where minimal genetic information is currently
available. With this, the University can now be a service laboratory
for routine testing and authentication of durian clones.
Abstract: This paper is aimed to the use of different types of
industrial wastes in concrete production. From examined waste
(crushed concrete waste) our tested concrete samples with dimension
150 mm were prepared. In these samples, fractions 4/8 mm and 8/16
mm by recycled concrete aggregate with a range of variation from 0
to 100% were replaced. Experiment samples were tested for
compressive strength after 2, 7, 14 and 28 days of hardening.
From obtained results it is evident that all samples prepared with
washed recycled concrete aggregates met the requirement of standard
for compressive strength of 20 MPa already after 14 days of
hardening. Sample prepared with recycled concrete aggregates (4/8
mm: 100% and 8/16 mm: 60%) reached 101% of compressive
strength value (34.7 MPa) after 28 days of hardening in comparison
with the reference sample (34.4 MPa). The lowest strength after 28
days of hardening (27.42 MPa) was obtained for sample consisting of
recycled concrete in proportion of 40% for 4/8 fraction and 100% for
8/16 fraction of recycled concrete.
Abstract: In the present study, the kinetics of thermal
degradation of a phenolic and lignin reinforced phenolic foams, and
the lignin used as reinforcement were studied and the activation
energies of their degradation processes were obtained by a DAEM
model. The average values for five heating rates of the mean
activation energies obtained were: 99.1, 128.2, and 144.0 kJ.mol-1 for
the phenolic foam; 109.5, 113.3, and 153.0 kJ.mol-1 for the lignin
reinforcement; and 82.1, 106.9, and 124.4 kJ.mol-1 for the lignin
reinforced phenolic foam. The standard deviation ranges calculated
for each sample were 1.27-8.85, 2.22-12.82, and 3.17-8.11 kJ.mol-1
for the phenolic foam, lignin and the reinforced foam, respectively.
The DAEM model showed low mean square errors (

with a wizard-of-oz design. The induced emotions are based on the
dimensional theory of emotions (valence, arousal and dominance).
These emotional sequences - recorded with multimodal data (facial
reactions, speech, audio and physiological reactions) during a
naturalistic-like HCI-environment one can improve classification
methods on a multimodal level.
This database is the result of an HCI-experiment, for which 30
subjects in total agreed to a publication of their data including the
video material for research purposes*. The now available open
corpus contains sensory signal of: video, audio, physiology (SCL,

Abstract: The coaxial transformer-coupled push-pull circuitry
has been used widely in HF and VHF amplifiers for many decades
without significant changes in the topology of the transformers. Basic
changes over the years concerned the construction and turns ratio of
the transformers as has been imposed upon the newer technologies
active devices demands. The balun transmission line transformers
applied in push-pull amplifiers enable input/output impedance
transformation, but are mainly used to convert the balanced output
into unbalanced and the input unbalanced into balanced. A simple
and affordable alternative solution over the traditional coaxial
transformer is the coreless planar balun. A key advantage over the
traditional approach lies in the high specifications repeatability;
simplifying the amplifier construction requirements as the planar
balun constitutes an integrated part of the PCB copper layout. This
paper presents the performance analysis of a planar LDMOS
MRFE6VP5600 Push-Pull amplifier that enables robust operation in
Band III, DVB-T, DVB-T2 standards but functions equally well in
Band II, for DRM+ new generation transmitters.
Abstract: The Scheduling and mapping of tasks on a set of
processors is considered as a critical problem in parallel and
distributed computing system. This paper deals with the problem of
dynamic scheduling on a special type of multiprocessor architecture
known as Linear Crossed Cube (LCQ) network. This proposed
multiprocessor is a hybrid network which combines the features of
both linear types of architectures as well as cube based architectures.
Two standard dynamic scheduling schemes namely Minimum
Distance Scheduling (MDS) and Two Round Scheduling (TRS)
schemes are implemented on the LCQ network. Parallel tasks are
mapped and the imbalance of load is evaluated on different set of
processors in LCQ network. The simulations results are evaluated
and effort is made by means of through analysis of the results to
obtain the best solution for the given network in term of load
imbalance left and execution time. The other performance matrices
like speedup and efficiency are also evaluated with the given
dynamic algorithms.
Abstract: This study was carried out to investigate the adverse
effect of industrial wastewater on surface water quality in Gebeng
industrial estate, Pahang, Malaysia. Surface water was collected from
six sampling stations. Physicochemical parameters were
characterized based on in-situ and ex-situ analysis according to
standard methods by American Public Health Association (APHA).
Selected heavy metals were determined by using Inductively Coupled
Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP MS). The results revealed that the
concentration of heavy metals such as Pb, Cu, Cd, Cr and Hg were
high in samples. The results also showed that the value of Pb and Hg
were higher in the wet season in comparison to dry season.
According to Malaysia National Water Quality Standard (NWQS)
and Water Quality Index (WQI) all the sampling station were
categorized as class IV (highly polluted). The present study revealed
that the adverse effects of careless disposal of wastes and directly
discharge of effluents affected on surface water quality. Therefore,
the authorities should implement the laws to ensure the proper
practices of wastewater management for environmental sustainability
around the study area.
Abstract: The Aptima® HIV-1 Quant Dx Assay is a fully
automated assay on the Panther system. It is based on Transcription-
Mediated Amplification and real time detection technologies. This
assay is intended for monitoring HIV-1 viral load in plasma
specimens and for the detection of HIV-1 in plasma and serum
specimens.
Nine-hundred and seventy nine specimens selected at random
from routine testing at St Thomas’ Hospital, London were
anonymised and used to compare the performance of the Aptima
HIV-1 Quant Dx assay and Roche COBAS® AmpliPrep/COBAS®
TaqMan® HIV-1 Test, v2.0. Two-hundred and thirty four specimens
gave quantitative HIV-1 viral load results in both assays. The
quantitative results reported by the Aptima Assay were comparable to
those reported by the Roche COBAS AmpliPrep/COBAS TaqMan
HIV-1 Test, v2.0 with a linear regression slope of 1.04 and an
intercept on -0.097.
The Aptima assay detected HIV-1 in more samples than the
COBAS assay. This was not due to lack of specificity of the Aptima
assay because this assay gave 99.83% specificity on testing plasma
specimens from 600 HIV-1 negative individuals. To understand the
reason for this higher detection rate a side-by-side comparison of low
level panels made from the HIV-1 3rd international standard
(NIBSC10/152) and clinical samples of various subtypes were tested
in both assays. The Aptima assay was more sensitive than the
COBAS assay.
The good sensitivity, specificity and agreement with other
commercial assays make the HIV-1 Quant Dx Assay appropriate for
both viral load monitoring and detection of HIV-1 infections.
Abstract: The paper presents an innovative networked radar
system for detection of obstacles in a railway level crossing scenario.
This Monitoring System (MS) is able to detect moving or still
obstacles within the railway level crossing area automatically,
avoiding the need of human presence for surveillance. The MS is also
connected to the National Railway Information and Signaling System
to communicate in real-time the level crossing status. The
architecture is compliant with the highest Safety Integrity Level
(SIL4) of the CENELEC standard. The number of radar sensors used
is configurable at set-up time and depends on how large the level
crossing area can be. At least two sensors are expected and up four
can be used for larger areas. The whole processing chain that
elaborates the output sensor signals, as well as the communication
interface, is fully-digital, was designed in VHDL code and
implemented onto a Xilinx Virtex 6.
Abstract: Background - The TrendCare Patient Dependency
System is currently used by a large number of maternity Services
across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. In 2012, 2013 and
2014 validation studies were initiated in all three countries to validate
the acuity tools used for women in labour, and postnatal mothers and
babies. This paper will present the findings of the validation study.
Aim - The aim of this study was to; identify if the care hours
provided by the TrendCare acuity system was an accurate reflection
of the care required by women and babies; obtain evidence of
changes required to acuity indicators and/or category timings to
ensure the TrendCare acuity system remains reliable and valid across
a range of maternity care models in three countries.
Method - A non-experimental action research methodology was
used across maternity services in four District Health Boards in New
Zealand, a large tertiary and a large secondary maternity service in
Singapore and a large public maternity service in Australia.
Standardised data collection forms and timing devices were used to
collect midwife contact times, with women and babies included in the
study. Rejection processes excluded samples when care was not
completed/rationed, and contact timing forms were incomplete. The
variances between actual timed midwife/mother/baby contact and the
TrendCare acuity category times were identified and investigated.
Results - Thirty two (88.9%) of the 36 TrendCare acuity category
timings, fell within the variance tolerance levels when compared to
the actual timings recorded for midwifery care. Four (11.1%)
TrendCare categories provided less minutes of care than the actual
timings and exceeded the variance tolerance level. These were all
night shift category timings. Nine postnatal categories were not able
to be compared as the sample size for these categories was
statistically insignificant. 100% of labour ward TrendCare categories
matched actual timings for midwifery care, all falling within the
variance tolerance levels.
The actual time provided by core midwifery staff to assist lead
maternity carer (LMC) midwives in New Zealand labour wards
showed a significant deviation to previous studies. The findings of
the study demonstrated the need for additional time allocations in
TrendCare to accommodate an increased level of assistance given to
LMC midwives.
Conclusion - The results demonstrated the importance of regularly
validating the TrendCare category timings with actual timings of the
care hours provided. It was evident from the findings that variances
to models of care and length of stay in maternity units have increased
midwifery workloads on the night shift. The level of assistance
provided by the core labour ward staff to the LMC midwife has
increased substantially.
Outcomes - As a consequence of this study, changes were made to
the night duty TrendCare maternity categories, additional acuity
indicators were developed and times for assisting LMC midwives in
labour ward increased. The updated TrendCare version was delivered
to maternity services in 2014.
Abstract: The introduction of degradable plastic materials into
agricultural sectors has represented a promising alternative to
promote green agriculture and environmental friendly of modern
farming practices. Major challenges of developing degradable
agricultural films are to identify the most feasible types of
degradation mechanisms, composition of degradable polymers and
related processing techniques. The incorrect choice of degradable
mechanisms to be applied during the degradation process will cause
premature losses of mechanical performance and strength. In order to
achieve controlled process of agricultural film degradation, the
compositions of degradable agricultural film also important in order
to stimulate degradation reaction at required interval of time and to
achieve sustainability of the modern agricultural practices. A set of
photodegradable polyethylene based agricultural film was developed
and produced, following the selective optimization of processing
parameters of the agricultural film manufacturing system. Example of
agricultural films application for oil palm seedlings cultivation is
presented.
Abstract: The construction industry has been demonstrating
increased growth and importance in Brazil’s national economic
development. This study aims to evaluate the financial performance
of the leading companies in the construction sector in Brazil in the
period from 2009 to 2012. An analysis is made of the capital
structure, liquidity, and profitability of the six largest companies in
the construction sector in Brazil: Brookfield, Cyrela, Gafisa, MRV,
PDG and Rossi. The results are then compared with standard industry
ratios. It was found that among the companies analyzed, MRV and
Cyrela showed the best relative performance in the period under
consideration.
Abstract: Significant quota of Municipal Electrical Energy
consumption is related to Decentralized Air Conditioning which is
mostly provided by evaporative coolers. So the aim is to optimize
design of air conditioners to increase their efficiencies. To achieve
this goal, results of practical standardized tests for 40 evaporative
coolers in different types collected and simultaneously results for
same coolers based on one of EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio)
modeling styles are figured out. By comparing experimental results
of different coolers standardized tests with modeling results,
preciseness of used model is assessed and after comparing gained
preciseness with international standards based on EER for cooling
capacity, aeration, and also electrical energy consumption, energy
label from A (most effective) to G (less effective) is classified; finally
needed methods to optimize energy consumption and coolers’
classification are provided.
Abstract: The arm length, hand length, hand breadth and middle
finger length of 1540 right-handed industrial workers of Haryana
state was used to assess the relationship between the upper limb
dimensions and stature. Initially, the data were analyzed using basic
univariate analysis and independent t-tests; then simple and multiple
linear regression models were used to estimate stature using SPSS
(version 17). There was a positive correlation between upper limb
measurements (hand length, hand breadth, arm length and middle
finger length) and stature (p < 0.01), which was highest for hand
length. The accuracy of stature prediction ranged from ± 54.897 mm
to ± 58.307 mm. The use of multiple regression equations gave better
results than simple regression equations. This study provides new
forensic standards for stature estimation from the upper limb
measurements of male industrial workers of Haryana (India). The
results of this research indicate that stature can be determined using
hand dimensions with accuracy, when only upper limb is available
due to any reasons likewise explosions, train/plane crashes, mutilated
bodies, etc. The regression formula derived in this study will be
useful for anatomists, archaeologists, anthropologists, design
engineers and forensic scientists for fairly prediction of stature using
regression equations.
Abstract: Applications of the Hausdorff space and its mappings
into tangent spaces are outlined, including their fractal dimensions
and self-similarities. The paper details this theory set up and further
describes virtualizations and atomization of manufacturing processes.
It demonstrates novel concurrency principles that will guide
manufacturing processes and resources configurations. Moreover,
varying levels of details may be produced by up folding and breaking
down of newly introduced generic models. This choice of layered
generic models for units and systems aspects along specific aspects
allows research work in parallel to other disciplines with the same
focus on all levels of detail. More credit and easier access are granted
to outside disciplines for enriching manufacturing grounds. Specific
mappings and the layers give hints for chances for interdisciplinary
outcomes and may highlight more details for interoperability
standards, as already worked on the international level. The new rules
are described, which require additional properties concerning all
involved entities for defining distributed decision cycles, again on the
base of self-similarity. All properties are further detailed and assigned
to a maturity scale, eventually displaying the smartness maturity of a
total shopfloor or a factory. The paper contributes to the intensive
ongoing discussion in the field of intelligent distributed
manufacturing and promotes solid concepts for implementations of
Cyber Physical Systems and the Internet of Things into
manufacturing industry, like industry 4.0, as discussed in German-speaking
countries.
Abstract: This paper examines the effect of the volatility of oil
prices on food price in South Africa using monthly data covering the
period 2002:01 to 2014:09. Food price is measured by the South
African consumer price index for food while oil price is proxied by
the Brent crude oil. The study employs the GARCH-in-mean VAR
model, which allows the investigation of the effect of a negative and
positive shock in oil price volatility on food price. The model also
allows the oil price uncertainty to be measured as the conditional
standard deviation of a one-step-ahead forecast error of the change in
oil price. The results show that oil price uncertainty has a positive
and significant effect on food price in South Africa. The responses of
food price to a positive and negative oil price shocks is asymmetric.
Abstract: This paper aims to investigate the influence of quality
of education and quality of research, provided by local educational
institutions, on the adoption of Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) in managing business operations for companies in
Saudi market. A model was developed and tested using data collected
from 138 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of foreign companies in
diverse business sectors. The data is analyzed and managed using
multivariate approaches through standard statistical packages. The
results showed that educational quality has little contribution to the
ICT adoption while research quality seems to play a more prominent
role. These results are analyzed in terms of business environment and
market constraints and further extended to the perceived effectiveness
of applied pedagogical approaches in schools and universities.
Abstract: Considering palm oil as non-drying oil owing to its
low iodine value, an attempt was taken to increase the unsaturation in
the fatty acid chains of palm oil for the preparation of alkyds. To
increase the unsaturation in the palm oil, sulphuric acid (SA) and
para-toluene sulphonic acid (PTSA) was used prior to alcoholysis for
the dehydration process. The iodine number of the oil samples was
checked for the unsaturation measurement by Wijs method. Alkyd
resin was prepared using the dehydrated palm oil by following
alcoholysis and esterification reaction. To improve the film properties
0.5wt.% multi-wall carbon nano tubes (MWCNTs) were used to
manufacture polymeric film. The properties of the resins were
characterized by various physico-chemical properties such as density,
viscosity, iodine value, saponification value, etc. Structural
elucidation was confirmed by Fourier transform of infrared
spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance; surfaces of the
films were examined by field-emission scanning electron microscope.
In addition, pencil hardness and chemical resistivity was also
measured by using standard methods. The effect of enhancement of
the unsaturation in the fatty acid chain found significant and
motivational. The resin prepared with dehydrated palm oil showed
improved properties regarding hardness and chemical resistivity
testing. The incorporation of MWCNTs enhanced the thermal
stability and hardness of the films as well.
Abstract: Within the framework of this research, the regulatory
documents, which are in force in relation to this industry, were
analyzed. The main attention is turned to their modernization and
necessity of their compliance with European standards.
It is a current issue to direct the efforts of state policy on support
of business by implementing infrastructural projects, as well as by
development of human resources, which may be possible by
supporting the relevant higher and vocational studying-educational
programs.
