Abstract: Support vector regression (SVR) has been regarded
as a state-of-the-art method for approximation and regression. The
importance of kernel function, which is so-called admissible support
vector kernel (SV kernel) in SVR, has motivated many studies
on its composition. The Gaussian kernel (RBF) is regarded as a
“best" choice of SV kernel used by non-expert in SVR, whereas
there is no evidence, except for its superior performance on some
practical applications, to prove the statement. Its well-known that
reproducing kernel (R.K) is also a SV kernel which possesses many
important properties, e.g. positive definiteness, reproducing property
and composing complex R.K by simpler ones. However, there are a
limited number of R.Ks with explicit forms and consequently few
quantitative comparison studies in practice. In this paper, two R.Ks,
i.e. SV kernels, composed by the sum and product of a translation
invariant kernel in a Sobolev space are proposed. An exploratory
study on the performance of SVR based general R.K is presented
through a systematic comparison to that of RBF using multiple
criteria and synthetic problems. The results show that the R.K is
an equivalent or even better SV kernel than RBF for the problems
with more input variables (more than 5, especially more than 10) and
higher nonlinearity.
Abstract: Although face recognition seems as an easy task for
human, automatic face recognition is a much more challenging task
due to variations in time, illumination and pose. In this paper, the
influence of time-lapse on visible and thermal images is examined.
Orthogonal moment invariants are used as a feature extractor to
analyze the effect of time-lapse on thermal and visible images and the
results are compared with conventional Principal Component
Analysis (PCA). A new triangle square ratio criterion is employed
instead of Euclidean distance to enhance the performance of nearest
neighbor classifier. The results of this study indicate that the ideal
feature vectors can be represented with high discrimination power
due to the global characteristic of orthogonal moment invariants.
Moreover, the effect of time-lapse has been decreasing and enhancing
the accuracy of face recognition considerably in comparison with
PCA. Furthermore, our experimental results based on moment
invariant and triangle square ratio criterion show that the proposed
approach achieves on average 13.6% higher in recognition rate than
PCA.
Abstract: The introduction of sowing technologies into minimum- or no-tillage soil has a number of economical and environmental virtues, such as improving soil properties, decreasing soil erosion and degradation, and saving working time and fuel. However, the main disadvantage of these technologies is that plant residues on the soil surface reduce the quality of the planted crop seeds, thus requiring plant residues to be removed or cut. This paper presents a analysis of disc coulter parameters and an experimental investigation of cutting spring barley straw containing various amounts of moisture with different disc coulters (smooth and notched).
Abstract: With increasing complexity in electronic systems
there is a need for system level anomaly detection and fault isolation.
Anomaly detection based on vector similarity to a training set is used
in this paper through two approaches, one the preserves the original
information, Mahalanobis Distance (MD), and the other that
compresses the data into its principal components, Projection Pursuit
Analysis. These methods have been used to detect deviations in
system performance from normal operation and for critical parameter
isolation in multivariate environments. The study evaluates the
detection capability of each approach on a set of test data with known
faults against a baseline set of data representative of such “healthy"
systems.
Abstract: Dengue fever is prevalent in Malaysia with numerous
cases including mortality recorded over the years. Public education
on the prevention of the desease through various means has been
carried out besides the enforcement of legal means to eradicate
Aedes mosquitoes, the dengue vector breeding ground. Hence, other
means need to be explored, such as predicting the seasonal peak
period of the dengue outbreak and identifying related climate factors
contributing to the increase in the number of mosquitoes. Simulation
model can be employed for this purpose. In this study, we created a
simulation of system dynamic to predict the spread of dengue
outbreak in Hulu Langat, Selangor Malaysia. The prototype was
developed using STELLA 9.1.2 software. The main data input are
rainfall, temperature and denggue cases. Data analysis from the graph
showed that denggue cases can be predicted accurately using these
two main variables- rainfall and temperature. However, the model
will be further tested over a longer time period to ensure its
accuracy, reliability and efficiency as a prediction tool for dengue
outbreak.
Abstract: In this paper we use exponential particle swarm
optimization (EPSO) to cluster data. Then we compare between
(EPSO) clustering algorithm which depends on exponential variation
for the inertia weight and particle swarm optimization (PSO)
clustering algorithm which depends on linear inertia weight. This
comparison is evaluated on five data sets. The experimental results
show that EPSO clustering algorithm increases the possibility to find
the optimal positions as it decrease the number of failure. Also show
that (EPSO) clustering algorithm has a smaller quantization error
than (PSO) clustering algorithm, i.e. (EPSO) clustering algorithm
more accurate than (PSO) clustering algorithm.
Abstract: An automatic speech recognition system for the
formal Arabic language is needed. The Quran is the most formal
spoken book in Arabic, it is spoken all over the world. In this
research, an automatic speech recognizer for Quranic based speakerindependent
was developed and tested. The system was developed
based on the tri-phone Hidden Markov Model and Maximum
Likelihood Linear Regression (MLLR). The MLLR computes a set
of transformations which reduces the mismatch between an initial
model set and the adaptation data. It uses the regression class tree, as
well as, estimates a set of linear transformations for the mean and
variance parameters of a Gaussian mixture HMM system. The 30th
Chapter of the Quran, with five of the most famous readers of the
Quran, was used for the training and testing of the data. The chapter
includes about 2000 distinct words. The advantages of using the
Quranic verses as the database in this developed recognizer are the
uniqueness of the words and the high level of orderliness between
verses. The level of accuracy from the tested data ranged 68 to 85%.
Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the appearance of the giant component in random subgraphs G(p) of a given large finite graph family Gn = (Vn, En) in which each edge is present independently with probability p. We show that if the graph Gn satisfies a weak isoperimetric inequality and has bounded degree, then the probability p under which G(p) has a giant component of linear order with some constant probability is bounded away from zero and one. In addition, we prove the probability of abnormally large order of the giant component decays exponentially. When a contact graph is modeled as Gn, our result is of special interest in the study of the spread of infectious diseases or the identification of community in various social networks.
Abstract: Much time series data is generally from continuous dynamic system. Firstly, this paper studies the detection of the nonlinearity of time series from continuous dynamics systems by applying the Phase-randomized surrogate algorithm. Then, the Delay Vector Variance (DVV) method is introduced into nonlinearity test. The results show that under the different sampling conditions, the opposite detection of nonlinearity is obtained via using traditional test statistics methods, which include the third-order autocovariance and the asymmetry due to time reversal. Whereas the DVV method can perform well on determining nonlinear of Lorenz signal. It indicates that the proposed method can describe the continuous dynamics signal effectively.
Abstract: The aerodynamic noise radiation from a side view mirror (SVM) in the high-speed airflow is calculated by the combination of unsteady incompressible fluid flow analysis and acoustic analysis. The transient flow past the generic SVM is simulated with variable turbulence model, namely DES Detached Eddy Simulation and LES (Large Eddy Simulation). Detailed velocity vectors and contour plots of the time-varying velocity and pressure fields are presented along cut planes in the flow-field. Mean and transient pressure are also monitored at several points in the flow field and compared to corresponding experimentally data published in literature. The acoustic predictions made using the Ffowcs-Williams-Hawkins acoustic analogy (FW-H) and the boundary element (BEM).
Abstract: This paper considers the development of a two-point
predictor-corrector block method for solving delay differential
equations. The formulae are represented in divided difference form
and the algorithm is implemented in variable stepsize variable order
technique. The block method produces two new values at a single
integration step. Numerical results are compared with existing
methods and it is evident that the block method performs very well.
Stability regions of the block method are also investigated.
Abstract: This study examined the effects of eight weeks of
whole-body vibration training (WBVT) on vertical and decuple jump
performance in handball athletes. Sixteen collegiate Level I handball
athletes volunteered for this study. They were divided equally as
control group and experimental group (EG). During the period of the
study, all athletes underwent the same handball specific training, but
the EG received additional WBVT (amplitude: 2 mm, frequency: 20 -
40 Hz) three time per week for eight consecutive weeks. The vertical
jump performance was evaluated according to the maximum height of
squat jump (SJ) and countermovement jump (CMJ). Single factor
ANCOVA was used to examine the differences in each parameter
between the groups after training with the pretest values as a covariate.
The statistic significance was set at p < .05. After 8 weeks WBVT, the
EG had significantly improved the maximal height of SJ (40.92 ± 2.96
cm vs. 48.40 ± 4.70 cm, F = 5.14, p < .05) and the maximal height
CMJ (47.25 ± 7.48 cm vs. 52.20 ± 6.25 cm, F = 5.31, p < .05). 8 weeks
of additional WBVT could improve the vertical and decuple jump
performance in handball athletes. Enhanced motor unit
synchronization and firing rates, facilitated muscular contraction
stretch-shortening cycle, and improved lower extremity
neuromuscular coordination could account for these enhancements.
Abstract: This study examines perception of environmental
approach in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) – the
process by which firms integrate environmental concern into
business. Based on a review of the literature, the paper synthesizes
focus on environmental issues with the reflection in a case study in
the Czech Republic. Two themes of corporate environmentalism are
discussed – corporate environmental orientation and corporate
stances toward environmental concerns. It provides theoretical
material on greening organizational culture that is helpful in
understanding the response of contemporary business to
environmental problems. We integrate theoretical predictions with
empirical findings confronted with reality. Scales to measure these
themes are tested in a survey of managers in 229 Czech firms. We
used the process of in-depth questioning. The research question was
derived and answered in the context of the corresponding literature
and conducted research. A case study showed us that environmental
approach is variety different (depending on the size of the firm) in
SMEs sector. The results of the empirical mapping demonstrate
Czech company’s approach to environment and define the problem
areas and pinpoint the main limitation in the expansion of
environmental aspects. We contribute to the debate for recognition of
the particular role of environmental issues in business reality.
Abstract: RC4 was used as an encryption algorithm in WEP(Wired Equivalent Privacy) protocol that is a standardized for 802.11 wireless network. A few attacks followed, indicating certain weakness in the design. In this paper, we proposed a new variant of RC4 stream cipher. The new version of the cipher does not only appear to be more secure, but its keystream also has large period, large complexity and good statistical properties.
Abstract: A novel circuit for generating a signal embedded with
features about data from three sensors is presented. This suggested
circuit is making use of a resistance-to-time converter employing a
bridge amplifier, an integrator and a comparator. The second resistive
sensor (Rz) is transformed into duty cycle. Another bridge with
varying resistor, (Ry) in the feedback of an OP AMP is added in
series to change the amplitude of the resulting signal in a proportional
relationship while keeping the same frequency and duty cycle
representing proportional changes in resistors Rx and Rz already
mentioned. The resultant output signal carries three types of
information embedded as variations of its frequency, duty cycle and
amplitude.
Abstract: Magnetic Resonance Imaging play a vital role in the decision-diagnosis process of brain MR images. For an accurate diagnosis of brain related problems, the experts mostly compares both T1 and T2 weighted images as the information presented in these two images are complementary. In this paper, rotational and translational invariant form of Local binary Pattern (LBP) with additional gray scale information is used to retrieve similar slices of T1 weighted images from T2 weighted images or vice versa. The incorporation of additional gray scale information on LBP can extract more local texture information. The accuracy of retrieval can be improved by extracting moment features of LBP and reweighting the features based on users feedback. Here retrieval is done in a single subject scenario where similar images of a particular subject at a particular level are retrieved, and multiple subjects scenario where relevant images at a particular level across the subjects are retrieved.
Abstract: The feature extraction method(s) used to recognize
hand-printed characters play an important role in ICR applications.
In order to achieve high recognition rate for a recognition system, the
choice of a feature that suits for the given script is certainly an
important task. Even if a new feature required to be designed for a
given script, it is essential to know the recognition ability of the
existing features for that script. Devanagari script is being used in
various Indian languages besides Hindi the mother tongue of majority
of Indians. This research examines a variety of feature extraction
approaches, which have been used in various ICR/OCR applications,
in context to Devanagari hand-printed script. The study is conducted
theoretically and experimentally on more that 10 feature extraction
methods. The various feature extraction methods have been evaluated
on Devanagari hand-printed database comprising more than 25000
characters belonging to 43 alphabets. The recognition ability of the
features have been evaluated using three classifiers i.e. k-NN, MLP
and SVM.
Abstract: As the majority of faults are found in a few of its
modules so there is a need to investigate the modules that are
affected severely as compared to other modules and proper
maintenance need to be done in time especially for the critical
applications. As, Neural networks, which have been already applied
in software engineering applications to build reliability growth
models predict the gross change or reusability metrics. Neural
networks are non-linear sophisticated modeling techniques that are
able to model complex functions. Neural network techniques are
used when exact nature of input and outputs is not known. A key
feature is that they learn the relationship between input and output
through training. In this present work, various Neural Network Based
techniques are explored and comparative analysis is performed for
the prediction of level of need of maintenance by predicting level
severity of faults present in NASA-s public domain defect dataset.
The comparison of different algorithms is made on the basis of Mean
Absolute Error, Root Mean Square Error and Accuracy Values. It is
concluded that Generalized Regression Networks is the best
algorithm for classification of the software components into different
level of severity of impact of the faults. The algorithm can be used to
develop model that can be used for identifying modules that are
heavily affected by the faults.
Abstract: In this research, CaO-ZnO catalysts (with various
Ca:Zn atomic ratios of 1:5, 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1) prepared by incipientwetness
impregnation (IWI) and co-precipitation (CP) methods were
used as a catalyst in the transesterification of palm oil with methanol
for biodiesel production. The catalysts were characterized by several
techniques, including BET method, CO2-TPD, and Hemmett
Indicator. The effects of precursor concentration, and calcination
temperature on the catalytic performance were studied under reaction
conditions of a 15:1 methanol to oil molar ratio, 6 wt% catalyst,
reaction temperature of 60°C, and reaction time of 8 h. At Ca:Zn
atomic ratio of 1:3 gave the highest FAME value owing to a basic
properties and surface area of the prepared catalyst.
Abstract: Future space vehicles will require the use of non-toxic, cryogenic propellants, because of the performance advantages over the toxic hypergolic propellants and also because of the environmental and handling concerns. A prototypical capillary flow liquid acquisition device (LAD) for cryogenic propellants was fabricated with a mesh screen, covering a rectangular flow channel with a cylindrical outlet tube, and was tested with liquid oxygen (LOX). In order to better understand the performance in various gravity environments and orientations with different submersion depths of the LAD, a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of LOX flow through the LAD screen channel, including horizontally and vertically submersions of the LAD channel assembly at normal gravity environment was conducted. Gravity effects on the flow field in LAD channel are inspected and analyzed through comparing the simulations.
